When to cut back hostas
Use the plant’s condition, not a fixed date: leave healthy green leaves in place until they begin to die back, or until frost has wilted them. What to do after frost
Once frost has wilted the leaves, cut the foliage back and remove it from the ground around the plant. How to handle diseased or pest-affected leaves
Remove affected foliage from the bed rather than leaving it around the plant. An Ask Extension response advises against putting diseased-looking hosta material in a home compost pile; municipal composting or yard-waste disposal may be options where available.
