Yes—take the possibility seriously, but don’t assume your water is contaminated just because your home is old or a pipe looks suspicious. Lead can enter drinking water from corroding service lines, plumbing, faucets, and fixtures. Ask your water utility what your service line is made of, then arrange a certified test of water from your tap. While you investigate, use cold water for drinking and cooking, and consider a filter certified to remove lead.
Why lead pipes are a concern
Lead can enter drinking water when lead-containing plumbing corrodes. A lead service line—the pipe connecting a water main to a building—is a major potential source: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies service lines as the leading source of lead in drinking water where they are present. Faucets and fixtures can also contribute.
The concern is health, not appearance. Water can look clear and still contain lead. EPA says there is no known safe level of lead in a child’s blood. Exposure can affect children’s learning and development; possible effects include lower IQ and attention span and learning or behavior problems. Adults can face cardiovascular, kidney, and nervous-system effects. Pregnant people, infants, and young children are among the groups EPA identifies as especially vulnerable. These are public-health risks, not a diagnosis of any particular person or home. A healthcare provider can advise on health concerns; a blood test can assess lead exposure.
A service-line check and a tap-water test answer different questions. Finding a lead line does not establish the lead concentration at your tap, and a water-system report or a neighbor’s test does not establish the result at your home. Lead can also come from paint, dust, soil, air, or food, so a tap-water test does not assess every possible exposure source.

How do I know if I have a lead service line?
- Ask your water utility. Request the material listed for your address and ask whether it is classified as lead, galvanized requiring replacement, non-lead, or unknown. Ask to see the publicly accessible service-line inventory and whether a replacement program applies to your property. EPA’s guide to identifying and replacing lead service lines explains the process.
- If the material is unknown, ask about an inspection. EPA says a licensed plumber may be able to help identify the service-line material. Its Protect Your Tap visual guide can help you check a pipe, but visual identification is not a test of water quality.
- Keep other plumbing in mind. Even if the service line is non-lead, faucets or fixtures may contribute lead. Conversely, a line’s material alone does not tell you the lead concentration in water from your tap.
How do I test my tap water for lead?
Contact your water utility or state drinking-water agency for certified laboratory options, then follow the lab’s exact instructions for collecting and submitting a sample. EPA recommends testing through a certified laboratory. Its Protect Your Tap guide publishes a testing-cost range of $15–$100; that is EPA’s stated range, not a current quote for a particular location.
A water utility’s Consumer Confidence Report provides system-level information; it does not establish the condition of your home’s plumbing or replace an address-specific sample when household plumbing is the concern. EPA explains the distinction in its Lead in Drinking Water guidance.

What to do while you investigate
- Use cold water for drinking, cooking, and infant formula. Warm or hot water can draw more lead from plumbing. Do not use hot tap water to prepare formula.
- Ask the utility about flushing. If water has been sitting in pipes, running it or using it for ordinary household activities can help clear standing water. The appropriate flushing time varies with the service line and home plumbing, so follow local advice rather than relying on a universal time.
- Clean faucet aerators regularly. Sediment and lead particles can collect in them.
- Consider a filter specifically certified to remove lead. Check that certification applies to the exact filter and setup you plan to use; install and operate it as directed, replace cartridges on schedule, and do not run hot water through it. Filtration is an interim exposure-reduction measure, not a substitute for testing or addressing the source. EPA’s household guidance for reducing lead exposure covers these precautions.
Does boiling water remove lead? No. EPA states: “Boiling water does not remove lead from water.”

The federal Lead and Copper Rule was established in 1991 and has been revised since. The 2021 revisions required water systems to inventory service lines, with initial inventories due to states by October 16, 2024. EPA finalized the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI) in 2024. Its current LCRI Questions and Answers page says the rule lowers the lead action level to 10 micrograms per liter (10 µg/L) and strengthens inventories, sampling, and public education.

An action level is a regulatory trigger for action by a water system—not a guarantee that an individual home’s water below that level is risk-free. EPA separately sets the maximum contaminant level goal for lead at zero; that health goal is not the same measure as the action level.
EPA says approximately 99% of systems are required to replace lead and galvanized-requiring-replacement service lines under their control within 10 years or less, with limited exceptions where a longer period is allowed. The same EPA Q&A says most systems generally begin complying three years after publication of the final rule in the Federal Register, which it describes as expected in late 2027. Until then, systems continue under the prior rule, alongside specified 2021 requirements already in effect. Implementation and legal dates can change; check EPA’s current Q&A and your utility for the latest information and the schedule that applies locally.

Responsibility and cost depend on local ownership arrangements and programs. A service line may have utility-owned and privately owned portions, so ask the utility what portion it controls, how the replacement process works, and whether assistance is available. EPA advises against partial replacement because it can leave risks; the LCRI generally prohibits partial replacement of lead and galvanized-requiring-replacement lines, subject to limited exceptions such as emergency repairs or coordinated planned infrastructure work. Do not arrange excavation or assume you alone are responsible before speaking with the utility. EPA’s replacement guidance explains the planning considerations.
