Sewage Cleanup Services: What to Do, What Professionals Do, and How to Choose

Keep away from suspected sewage and arrange experienced help. Learn what a sewage cleanup service may involve and what to ask before hiring.

If sewage has backed up into your home or contaminated floodwater may have entered, keep people and pets away and avoid contact with the water. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns: “Always avoid contact with any floodwater that may be contaminated with sewage— it can make you sick!” For sewage-contaminated building damage, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends contacting a professional experienced in cleaning and repairing buildings damaged by contaminated water.

What to do first when sewage is present

  1. Keep people and pets away. Do not walk through, touch, or attempt to mop up suspected sewage. If you see sewage indoors or contamination is plausible, treat the area as contaminated until it has been assessed. CDC also identifies sewage visible outdoors and slow sinks or toilets among possible signs of a septic-system malfunction; a slow drain alone does not prove there is a sewage emergency. CDC’s septic and onsite wastewater guidance explains these warning signs.
  2. Do not enter if there may be electrical or structural hazards. Sewage water can conceal hazards, and protective clothing does not make an unsafe building safe. Keep clear and contact appropriate emergency, utility, plumbing, or building professionals as the situation requires.
  3. Arrange help to address the source. A cleanup crew may need to coordinate with a plumber or utility to stop or repair the wastewater problem. Cleaning without resolving the source can leave the property vulnerable to further contamination.
  4. Contact a qualified cleanup professional. EPA advises hiring someone experienced in cleaning and fixing buildings damaged by contaminated water, and recommends checking references. Sewage contamination is not the same as a clean-water leak, and the available guidance does not establish a universal square-foot threshold below which sewage cleanup is safe to do yourself. EPA’s separate small-area guidance concerns mold cleanup, not sewage-remediation limits. See EPA’s guidance on mold cleanup in your home.

Why sewage-contaminated water needs careful handling

Sewage can carry harmful contaminants. Contact can expose people through skin, eyes, or accidental ingestion, and floodwater may contain sewage even when contamination is not obvious. Avoiding contact is the safest immediate choice; do not assume that water is safe because it looks clear or because the affected area seems small.

CDC’s public guidance says that if cleanup of sewage after a disaster is necessary, people should wear rubber boots, goggles, and gloves. It also advises covering wounds or cuts with a waterproof bandage. Those measures reduce exposure; they are not a guarantee that an occupant can safely take on a complex or extensive cleanup. CDC’s disaster cleanup guidance gives the public-facing precautions.

Worker protection is more than a set of supplies

For workers handling human waste or sewage, CDC describes waterproof gloves, rubber boots, goggles, and face protection appropriate to the risk. Its guidance also covers training, handwashing access, keeping cuts covered, washing hands after handling sewage, and removing contaminated work clothes and boots before leaving the worksite. These worker recommendations underscore why a pair of gloves alone is not a complete safety plan. See CDC’s guidance for workers handling human waste.

What a sewage cleanup service may do

A sound cleanup is not simply spraying disinfectant over visible damage. The work may involve stopping or restoring wastewater service, extracting sewage and standing water, deciding whether containment is needed, removing materials that cannot be suitably cleaned, cleaning salvageable hard surfaces, drying the remaining structure, and reassessing it before repairs. The exact scope depends on the building, materials, extent of contamination, and site conditions.

CDC publishes detailed remediation guidance for healthcare facilities. Its sequence is useful for understanding the kinds of decisions a professional may make, but it is not a universal residential checklist or a promise that every home job follows identical steps. CDC’s healthcare-facility reopening guidance describes remediation in that facility context.

Source control and extraction

The first priority is to stop or resolve the wastewater source, often with help from a plumber or utility. Cleanup professionals can then remove standing sewage and contaminated water. Ask how the contractor will handle source control and extraction, including whether another trade needs to be involved.

Removal and cleaning decisions

Some materials can be cleaned; others may be too contaminated or damaged to salvage. Nonporous surfaces may be physically cleaned, while porous items such as carpeting or wallboard may need removal and replacement when they cannot be appropriately cleaned and dried. The decision should be tied to the material and site conditions rather than a blanket promise to save everything—or a blanket claim that everything must be discarded. CDC’s sewage-spill guidance discusses removal, drying, and restoration in a facility setting: CDC’s water and sewage-spill guidance.

Drying and reassessment

After extraction and cleaning, professionals may dry and reassess remaining building materials before repair and replacement. Ask what materials will be monitored, how the contractor will determine when drying is adequate, and what follow-up documentation you will receive. CDC facility guidance discusses removing and replacing certain porous structural materials if they cannot be cleaned and dried within 72 hours. That is facility-specific guidance—not a guaranteed deadline or universal residential rule.

Cleaning and disinfection are different steps

Disinfectant does not remove sewage solids, extract contaminated water, or fix the cause of a backup. CDC’s general home guidance is to clean surfaces before disinfecting, follow the product label and required wet contact time, ventilate the area, and never mix cleaning products. Which methods are appropriate for sewage-affected materials depends on the site; do not rely on a one-size-fits-all bleach recipe. See CDC’s guidance on when and how to clean and disinfect your home.

How to compare sewage cleanup providers

EPA recommends asking about relevant experience and checking references. Use the written scope and the contractor’s explanations to compare providers; no single credential or certificate is established here as a universal legal requirement, and quality should not be judged by price alone.

  • Relevant experience: What sewage or contaminated-water projects similar to yours have you handled? Can you provide references?
  • Written scope: Which rooms, surfaces, and materials are included? What is excluded, and how will changes to the scope be approved?
  • Source coordination: How will the wastewater source be addressed? Will you coordinate with a plumber or utility where needed?
  • Material decisions: How will you decide what can be cleaned and what must be removed? How will contaminated materials be handled?
  • Drying and reassessment: What is the drying plan, and how will you assess the remaining materials before repairs?
  • Site safety: What PPE, containment, and work practices are appropriate for this property?
  • Documentation: What records will you provide describing work performed, materials removed, and follow-up?

Local licensing rules, insurance coverage, and service credentials vary. Confirm the requirements that apply in your area and review your own policy with your insurer; cleanup guidance alone cannot determine coverage.

When an occupant should not attempt cleanup

Do not enter an area with suspected electrical or structural danger, and do not treat PPE as a substitute for professional assessment. For sewage-contaminated building damage, EPA’s recommendation is to seek an experienced professional. If you are a renter, notify the property manager or landlord promptly while keeping clear of the affected area; property owners and managers should arrange appropriate assessment and source control rather than asking occupants to handle hazardous cleanup.
