Setting Up Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi 3: A Beginner’s Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—an existing Raspberry Pi 3 Model B or B+ can still run Home Assistant OS. Home Assistant’s board-support documentation lists the 64-bit rpi3_64 configuration as supported. However, the current beginner installation guide focuses on Raspberry Pi 4 and 5, so a Pi 3 is best treated as a sensible low-cost option for a small installation—not the best new purchase for every workload.

This guide shows how to install Home Assistant OS without a monitor, complete initial configuration, connect smart-home devices, protect your installation, and decide when newer hardware makes more sense.

Can a Raspberry Pi 3 still run Home Assistant?

It can, provided you use a compatible 64-bit Home Assistant OS image. Raspberry Pi 3 Model B and Model B+ are listed in Home Assistant’s developer board-support documentation under rpi3_64. The Raspberry Pi 3A+ also appears in the Pi 3 support context, but Pi 3 variants should not be treated as interchangeable without checking the current board documentation.

Support does not mean unlimited performance. A Pi 3 is suitable for basic lighting, switches, sensors, dashboards, and automations. It has less performance headroom than a Pi 4, Pi 5, mini PC, or Home Assistant Green, and may boot, update, and process large installations more slowly.

  • CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)

Use the Pi 3 if you already own one and want an inexpensive local smart-home hub. If you are buying everything from scratch, compare its total cost—including a reliable power supply, storage, case, and any radio adapters—with a newer Raspberry Pi or a turnkey Home Assistant Green.

For a beginner, install Home Assistant OS. It includes the operating system, Home Assistant, Supervisor, and the apps/add-ons system. Home Assistant Container is a different, more hands-on option requiring Docker and Linux administration; it does not provide the same Supervisor and add-on experience. See Home Assistant’s installation overview.

What you need

  • Raspberry Pi 3 Model B or B+.
  • A reliable power supply appropriate for the Pi 3.
  • A good-quality microSD card. Use at least 32 GB as a practical baseline; an A2-rated card is preferable where available.
  • A computer with an SD-card reader.
  • An Ethernet cable and access to your router.
  • A case and cooling, which are advisable but not strictly required for a basic installation.
  • Optional radio hardware for Zigbee, Thread, Matter, or Z-Wave devices.

Do not power the Pi from an ordinary computer USB port. A weak or unsuitable supply can cause boot failures, USB dropouts, instability, or filesystem corruption. Home Assistant also notes that the Pi 3’s power capacity can become a limitation when using USB-attached SSDs or several USB accessories; a stronger supply or powered USB hub may be necessary. Consult the official Raspberry Pi installation guide and operating-system documentation.

Choose the correct Home Assistant image

You need the 64-bit Home Assistant OS image for Raspberry Pi 3, identified as rpi3_64. Do not select a Pi 4 or Pi 5 image simply because it is the first Raspberry Pi option shown.

The recommended workflow is:

  1. Download and install Raspberry Pi Imager.
  2. Insert the microSD card into your computer. Flashing will erase the card. Copy off anything you need first.
  3. Open Raspberry Pi Imager and inspect the Home Assistant entries under the specific-purpose or home-automation operating-system categories.
  4. If a Raspberry Pi 3 or rpi3_64 image is offered, select it.
  5. If the current Imager does not offer a Pi 3 image, download the asset explicitly labeled for Raspberry Pi 3 64-bit from the official Home Assistant OS releases page, then use Imager or Balena Etcher to write it.
  6. Select the microSD card as the storage target and write the image.
  7. Safely eject the card when writing is complete.

Always verify the board target before writing. A Pi 3 cannot use an image intended for a different Raspberry Pi generation simply because both are branded “Raspberry Pi.”

Install and boot Home Assistant OS

  1. Disconnect power from the Pi.
  2. Insert the flashed microSD card.
  3. Connect the Pi to your router with Ethernet.
  4. Connect the correct power supply.
  5. Wait several minutes while Home Assistant completes its first boot.

For this installation you normally do not need a monitor, keyboard, or mouse. The Pi runs headlessly and is managed from another computer or phone on the network.

Open Home Assistant without a monitor

On a device connected to the same ordinary home network, open:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
http://homeassistant.local:8123

If that address does not resolve, find the Pi in your router’s connected-device or DHCP-client list and open its address instead:

http://PI_IP_ADDRESS:8123

For example:

http://192.168.x.x:8123

The first boot may still be in progress. Also check that the Pi has an Ethernet link, that your computer and Pi are not separated by a guest network or VLAN, and that the address has not changed.

Complete first-run onboarding

Home Assistant will guide you through the initial setup:

  1. Create the owner account and use a strong, unique password.
  2. Give the installation a name.
  3. Set the correct home location and time zone.
  4. Choose your preferred measurement units.
  5. Review automatically discovered devices and services.

Discovery is not guaranteed for every device. It depends on the device protocol, vendor integration, network configuration, and whether the device is reachable on the same local network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leave remote access disabled initially unless you understand how it will be secured. After onboarding, update the system, but create a backup before major configuration changes or upgrades.

Make the network more reliable

Ethernet is the best choice for installation and initial configuration because it avoids early Wi-Fi troubleshooting. Wi-Fi may be usable later where supported, but a wired connection is generally more predictable for a fixed home-automation hub.

Create a DHCP reservation for the Pi in your router. This makes the Pi receive the same address without manually hard-coding an address inside Home Assistant. Stable addressing makes bookmarks, integrations, and troubleshooting easier.

Do not expose port 8123 directly to the public internet. For remote access, use Home Assistant Cloud, or configure a properly secured VPN or reverse proxy if you already understand network administration. Home Assistant Cloud is optional; local Home Assistant operation does not require it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect smart-home devices

The Pi itself is not a universal radio hub. The required hardware depends on the protocols used by your devices:

Device type What may be required
Wi-Fi devices A vendor integration or supported local network protocol; no separate radio is necessarily required.
Zigbee A Zigbee coordinator, such as a compatible USB adapter or Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2.
Thread or Matter Compatible radio hardware and, depending on the setup, a Thread border router.
Z-Wave A Z-Wave controller.
Bluetooth The Pi’s Bluetooth hardware may work, but range, interference, and integration support vary.

For USB Zigbee or Thread radios, use a short USB extension cable and position the adapter away from the Pi and Wi-Fi router. This can reduce interference, though it is not a substitute for choosing the correct coordinator or building a strong mesh network.

Create a backup immediately

Do not wait until the installation contains dozens of devices. After onboarding:

  1. Create a full Home Assistant backup.
  2. Download or copy a backup to another computer or storage location.
  3. Keep at least one copy away from the Pi.
  4. Create a fresh backup before major updates, add-on changes, or storage changes.

A backup stored only on the same microSD card does not protect you from that card failing. Home Assistant’s operating-system documentation recommends storing backups outside the device running Home Assistant.

Understand the update layers

Home Assistant updates are not all the same. You may separately update:

  • Home Assistant Core.
  • Home Assistant OS.
  • Apps or add-ons.
  • Integrations and device firmware, where applicable.

Before updating, make a backup and read the relevant release information. When troubleshooting, update one layer at a time so you know what changed. Do not disconnect power during an update, even if the web interface is temporarily unavailable. A Pi 3 and its microSD card may simply take longer than newer hardware.

Troubleshooting

The Pi does not boot

Check the image, card, power supply, and Pi variant first. Reflash the card, try another known-good card, use the correct rpi3_64 image, remove unnecessary USB devices, and use a proper power supply. If another operating-system image also fails, the Pi or its power hardware may be faulty.

homeassistant.local does not open

Wait longer for the first boot, check the router’s client list, and use the Pi’s IP address with port 8123. Confirm the Ethernet cable and link lights. Temporarily place the computer and Pi on the same normal LAN rather than a guest network. Some networks do not pass local hostname discovery between segments.

The system repeatedly restarts or becomes unstable

Suspect undervoltage, a weak supply, excessive USB load, a failing microSD card, or a workload beyond the Pi 3’s capabilities. Disconnect USB accessories, try a better supply, use a powered hub where appropriate, and check whether the problem disappears. Restore a known-good backup on newer hardware if the installation has outgrown the Pi.

Zigbee devices are unreliable

Move the coordinator away from the Pi and Wi-Fi router using a USB extension cable. Check Wi-Fi congestion, coordinator placement, and mesh coverage. Adding powered Zigbee routers can improve coverage. The Pi’s built-in Bluetooth does not replace a Zigbee or Thread coordinator.

An update appears to have failed

  1. Wait several minutes before intervening.
  2. Check whether the Pi is still visible in the router.
  3. Try the browser again.
  4. Only then consider a power cycle.
  5. Restore from a backup if Home Assistant does not return.

Repeated slow or failed updates are a useful sign that the storage or workload is no longer a good match for the Pi 3.

Should you use an SSD?

USB mass-storage boot is documented for Raspberry Pi 3B, 3B+, and 3A+, with board-specific boot configuration requirements. It is possible, but it is not the simplest first installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

USB boot adds configuration, enclosure, compatibility, and power considerations. The Pi 3’s USB and power limitations are especially relevant when attaching an SSD and radio adapters together. Start with a quality microSD card unless you have a specific reason to use USB storage and are comfortable troubleshooting it.

When should you upgrade?

Option Best for Trade-off
Existing Pi 3 Small installations and learning at the lowest additional cost. Less performance headroom and greater sensitivity to storage and power problems.
Raspberry Pi 4 A newer DIY installation with more headroom and a mainstream beginner path. Still requires separate storage, power, case, and possibly radio hardware.
Raspberry Pi 5 Larger installations and heavier add-ons. Higher hardware and power requirements may not be worthwhile for a small setup.
Home Assistant Green A beginner who wants a dedicated, plug-and-play appliance. Less flexible than repurposing hardware you already own.
Mini PC More performance, storage flexibility, and expansion. More hardware and operating-system choices to manage.

Move to newer hardware if you are buying from scratch, running cameras or image processing, using voice pipelines, maintaining many integrations and add-ons, building large history-heavy dashboards, or attaching several USB devices. Home Assistant’s hardware FAQ describes Green as its plug-and-play option and lists Raspberry Pi systems, mini PCs, NUCs, and virtual machines as alternatives.

Final verdict

An existing Raspberry Pi 3 Model B or B+ remains a viable Home Assistant platform in 2026 when used with the official 64-bit rpi3_64 Home Assistant OS image. Use Ethernet, reliable power, quality storage, regular off-device backups, and realistic expectations about workload. If you are buying new hardware or expect a large, demanding installation, a Pi 4, Pi 5, mini PC, or Home Assistant Green is the safer long-term choice.
