Sealing the Deal: Why Ponds Leak and How to Handle a Leaking Pond

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not start by dumping sealant. A falling pond level is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Measure the loss, account for evaporation and normal first-fill absorption, identify the pond’s construction, and inspect the likely failure points before choosing a repair.

An EPDM liner puncture, a leaking outlet pipe, a muskrat tunnel, and seepage through a sandy embankment may all look like “a pond leak,” but they require completely different solutions. The wrong product can waste money—or conceal a developing dam problem.

Do not begin by spreading pond sealer. A falling pond level is a symptom, not a diagnosis. First measure the loss and account for evaporation, recent filling, pumping, rainfall, and normal absorption. Then determine whether the pond is an earthen impoundment or a flexible-lined ornamental pond. Only after locating the likely failure should you choose between monitoring, a liner patch, soil treatment, structural repair, or an engineered membrane.

The distinction matters. A small puncture in an EPDM liner may be repaired with a compatible patch system. A wet, muddy area below an earthen dam may indicate seepage through the embankment, an animal burrow, or a failing outlet pipe—conditions that can worsen if covered with a surface product.

  • 7x10 FT POND LINER SET: The set includes a premium HDPE material pond liner and a pair of gardening gloves. The liner is highly durable, resistant to punctures, sunlight and functions well in cold temperatures. 20 mil (0.5 mm) thickness, is more waterproof and leakproof than other materials, ensuring retention of pond water
  • EASY TO USE: First, mark the shape of the pond and dig out it. Then, you can cut the liner any size and shape to fit your pond. Alternatively, seam two liners together with the pond liner seam tape. Finally, placed the liner on the bottom of the pond and secure it
  • PROTECTION OF PONDS: Pond liners reduce the entry of soil into the pond and maintain a clear water quality. This will create a more favorable habitat for your fish. In addition, pond liners facilitate easier cleaning and maintenance of the pond's bottom
  • WIDE USED APPLICATION: Pond liners are suitable for garden waterfalls, cisterns, fountain, fish ponds, duck pond and other aquatic life pond. Pond liner as waterproof layer also can be extensively used in construction, agriculture, rooftop, surface protection
  • TIPS FOR USE: To recover flexibility, it is advisable to leave the liner in the sun for 10-15 minutes. And at the edges of the pond, you can use modeling stones and marginal plants pressed against the liner to provide stability and aesthetic
Immediate safety rule: Rapidly increasing seepage, muddy discharge, a sinkhole, dam cracking, slumping, soil being carried in the flow, or water approaching the dam crest requires professional assessment. Do not breach, excavate, drain, or heavily operate equipment on a distressed dam as a first response.

First decide whether the water loss is actually abnormal

Ponds lose water while functioning normally. Evaporation can be substantial, especially in hot, dry, windy weather. Missouri Extension guidance identifies about one-quarter inch per day as common during hot parts of summer and roughly one-half inch per day as possible in particularly hot conditions. Pennsylvania guidance also cautions that, under some summer conditions, evaporation can amount to several inches per day. These figures are not universal conversion factors: climate, wind, shade, vegetation, pond size, water temperature, and exposure all matter.

A newly filled pond may also fall as the embankment and underlying soils absorb water and a subsurface water mound develops. That initial decline does not automatically mean the pond has failed. Missouri guidance describes seepage of approximately two inches or less per month as generally acceptable in its context, but the appropriate benchmark depends on the site and should not be treated as a guarantee for every pond.

A simple field record

  1. Choose a fixed reference point—a stake, bridge support, outlet structure, or other immovable feature—and mark the water level.
  2. Record the date and time, recent rainfall, air temperature, wind, shade, vegetation condition, pumping or irrigation withdrawals, and any known inflow.
  3. Take another reading after a rain-free interval without intentional pumping or filling. Several readings are more useful than one.
  4. Calculate the average vertical decline: (starting water level − ending water level) ÷ number of days.
  5. Compare that decline with the weather and estimated evaporation. The unexplained portion is the reason to investigate further—not, by itself, proof of a particular repair method.

Also record what happens at the end of the decline. If the water level repeatedly drops quickly to one elevation and then stabilizes, the leak may be associated with a bank, liner edge, pipe penetration, or other defect at that elevation.

Identify the pond construction before choosing a repair

Pond type Most likely failure points Typical repair direction
Earthen pond or dam Permeable soil, poorly compacted fill, fractured rock, outlet pipes, roots, animal burrows, or erosion Inspection and engineered soil, clay, bentonite, membrane, pipe, or embankment work
Flexible-lined pond Punctures, tears, failed seams, movement, exposed edges, skimmers, drains, or pipe penetrations Material-compatible patching, seaming, penetration repair, or liner replacement
Preformed shell Cracks, deformation, failed fittings, or leaks around connected plumbing Repair according to the shell and fitting manufacturer, or replace the shell

Do not assume a product suitable for one construction type will work on another. Bentonite is a soil-treatment material, not a dependable patch for a flexible liner. A waterproof tape marketed for several plastics is not automatically the correct system for an EPDM seam, PVC liner, polyethylene liner, or pipe boot.

How to inspect a leaking pond

1. Check the outlet and overflow first

Inspect overflow pipes, drain pipes, standpipes, joints, pipe penetrations, valves, and the point where water discharges downstream. A pipe can leak below the water surface even when the pond looks intact from above. Look for unexpected discharge, wet ground around the pipe, eroded soil, rust, separated joints, and water emerging where it should not.

Remove leaves, branches, and other debris from an overflow structure if you can do so safely. Do not casually modify, plug, excavate, or reduce an outlet. A blocked or undersized outlet can cause overtopping and dam erosion, which is a potentially more serious hazard than ordinary seepage. Avoid entering culverts or standing in unstable wet areas.

2. Walk the downstream face and banks

Inspect the outside face of the dam, downstream toe, side banks, and areas below the normal water line. Warning signs include:

  • Wet soil, a spring, or a continuously damp patch outside the pond;
  • Muddy water or sediment emerging from the bank;
  • Cattails or other unusually lush, water-loving vegetation;
  • Cracks, slumps, bulges, sinkholes, or depressions;
  • Fresh erosion or a narrow channel carrying water; and
  • Animal entrances, especially low on the bank or near the water line.

Compare suspicious areas with nearby ground. A damp patch that grows, becomes muddy, or carries soil is more concerning than a consistently moist area caused by a natural spring or ordinary drainage.

3. Look for muskrat damage

Muskrats commonly burrow into banks, earthen dikes, and dams approximately 6 to 18 inches below the water surface. Their tunnels can connect the pond to the outside face of the embankment, creating a leak path that also causes muddy water, erosion, and eventual collapse.

After the cause has been addressed, coarse rock can protect the vulnerable waterline. Pennsylvania guidance describes riprap extending from approximately one foot above to three feet below the normal water line as a deterrent to burrowing and a protection against wave action. A suitable pond-bank riprap installation must be placed without damaging the dam or obstructing an outlet. Wire mesh and trapping or wildlife-control measures may also be relevant, but check state and local wildlife rules before handling or removing animals.

4. Treat trees with caution

New trees and woody vegetation generally should not be allowed to establish on a dam. Roots can create leakage paths, and fallen trees can leave voids or disturb the embankment. However, cutting or killing every existing tree is not a safe rule. Large, established trees may already have substantial root systems, and decaying roots can create new seepage paths after the tree is removed.

Have large trees on or immediately adjacent to a dam evaluated by a qualified pond professional, engineer, or the appropriate conservation authority before removal. The right decision depends on the tree, its location, the dam’s construction, and the risk posed by both retaining and removing it.

5. Use dye only as a limited tracing aid

When a specific wet area or suspected flow path has been identified, a small amount of inert, food-grade dye may help show whether water is moving toward that location. Penn State Extension describes this as a limited diagnostic technique, not a repair. Use only a product appropriate for the setting and follow its label. “Food-grade” does not automatically mean harmless to fish, wildlife, an irrigation intake, drinking-water source, or downstream water.

Do not use dye indiscriminately in a large pond or near an intake. A food-grade pond leak-detection dye is useful only when there is a defined question to test and the environmental consequences have been considered.

6. For a lined pond, find the level where the loss stops

Lower the water only as much as necessary to expose the suspected defect. If the pond stops losing water at a repeatable elevation, inspect that band first. Examine the liner field, folds, edges, seams, skimmer faceplates, waterfall interfaces, drains, and every pipe penetration at that level.

Clean and dry the area, identify the liner material, and follow the manufacturer’s repair system. EPDM, PVC, polyethylene, and preformed shells do not automatically accept the same adhesive, primer, patch, or tape. Do not apply an EPDM repair kit to an unknown liner merely because the packaging uses the word “waterproof.”

Repairing an earthen pond or dam

Compacted clay or a clay blanket

Where suitable clay is available, a compacted clay blanket or compacted soil treatment can reduce seepage. The material must be placed in controlled lifts and compacted at an appropriate moisture content. Simply spreading a thin layer of dirt over the surface rarely produces a reliable seal.

Design requirements depend on soil conditions, water depth, slopes, inflow, and the expected exposure to drying, freezing, wave action, and concentrated flow. The blanket needs adequate thickness and protection from those forces. A qualified designer should determine the material specification, lift thickness, moisture range, compaction method, and tie-ins to existing soil and structures.

Sodium bentonite

Bentonite is a swelling clay, but the type is critical. Sodium bentonite pond sealer is the relevant category for pond sealing because sodium bentonite has a high swelling capacity. Calcium bentonite has negligible swelling for this purpose and should not be substituted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bentonite is most dependable when mixed with suitable soil and compacted as part of a designed liner. Broadcasting it over a full, filled pond is usually unreliable. Pennsylvania Extension describes broadcast application as having a low success rate and limited applicability to very small, shallow leaks whose location is known. Missouri Extension guidance says the pool should be dry before application.

Planning rates vary with soil texture, fines, clay content, water depth, and the treatment design. Missouri guidance gives broad planning ranges of approximately one pound per square foot for soils containing some clay and up to about three pounds per square foot for sand-and-gravel material. Those figures are not a universal DIY dosage. NRCS guidance emphasizes soil-specific rates and laboratory testing or local design criteria.

Sodium bentonite can shrink and crack when it dries. The treated area should be protected and refilled promptly, and a bentonite treatment is a poor choice for a pond with large water-level fluctuations unless the design specifically accommodates repeated wetting and drying.

Chemical soil dispersants

Sodium polyphosphate and other chemical dispersants are soil-dependent treatments, not general-purpose pond sealers. NRCS guidance indicates that they are intended for fine-grained soils containing sufficient clay and are ineffective in coarse-grained soils. They also require appropriate dust, chemical-handling, and environmental precautions.

  • [Easy Cutting] This fish pond liner has durable yet lightweight, easy to install and bend, stretched around corners to fit nearly any pond shape. You can cut it to the size you want to fit all irregular surfaces.
  • [Protect the Pond] Black Pond Liner can well block soil and water. It prevents dirty substances in the soil from entering the pond and provides a good living environment for the animals and plants in the pond.
  • [Wide Application] Thick pond liner has waterproof and anti-leakage function. It can be adapted to ponds of various sizes with narrow corners, contours and shelves. The pond underlayment is perfect for fish ponds, fountains, waterfalls and water gardens.
  • [Please Note] Pond Liner under layment provides a flat surface for your gardenpond. Due to the high water pressure after injection, you can clean the area and add a layer of round pebbles before using. Avoid hard things affecting the life of pond liner.

Use a dispersant only as part of a designed soil-treatment project that establishes whether the native soil can respond to it, how it will be incorporated, and how the treated area will be protected.

Flexible membrane lining

A geomembrane or other flexible membrane may be the better solution where native soil is highly permeable, where a very effective barrier is required, or where clay and bentonite treatments are unsuitable. NRCS treats flexible membrane lining as a formal pond-sealing practice. It can be relatively expensive, but it is often appropriate on sandy sites or projects where uncontrolled seepage cannot be tolerated.

Membrane work is more than laying plastic over a wet surface. The subgrade must be prepared, sharp rocks and roots removed, slopes and anchoring addressed, penetrations detailed, seams installed correctly, and the liner protected from puncture and ultraviolet exposure as appropriate. A replacement project may also require pond liner underlayment beneath the membrane to protect it from stones, roots, and irregularities in the prepared base. Underlayment is primarily a reconstruction or replacement accessory; it will not repair a leak in an existing liner by itself.

Repairing a flexible ornamental pond liner

Small EPDM puncture or tear

For a small, confirmed EPDM puncture or tear, a purpose-built pond liner repair kit is a reasonable repair choice. The Elevate/Firestone kit described in the research includes two 6-by-6-inch patches, primer, a scrubber pad, roller, and gloves. Its procedure calls for draining water away from the damaged area, drying the surface completely, applying primer, placing the patch, and rolling it flat before refilling. Aquascape describes its QuickSeam kit as intended to repair up to two holes in EPDM liner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These details describe specific manufacturer systems, not a universal procedure for every liner. Confirm the material and follow the instructions supplied with the actual kit. A patch applied to a damp, dirty, oily, or moving surface may fail even when the patch itself is appropriate.

Seams and larger repairs

A failed seam or a repair joining liner panels is a different job from patching one puncture. For confirmed EPDM work, use the manufacturer’s specified EPDM pond liner seam tape and primer, splice tape, cover strip, and application procedure. Cleaning, priming, dry conditions, patch placement, and rolling pressure all affect the bond.

Generic waterproof tape may be advertised for EPDM, PVC, and polyethylene, sometimes including underwater use. That broad claim does not establish long-term compatibility with the installed liner or the particular repair conditions. Verify the liner material, adhesive system, surface preparation, temperature, and whether the repair is on the field of the liner or at a seam.

Pipe penetrations, skimmers, and edges

Leaks at pipe boots, drains, skimmer faceplates, waterfall connections, and liner edges need specialized detailing. Manufacturer systems identify pipe boots, FormFlash, seam tape, and cover strips as distinct products and procedures. Tightening a fitting or adding sealant from the exposed side may conceal the symptom without correcting a displaced liner, failed gasket, contaminated bond, or poorly supported penetration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the leak is at a plumbing penetration, remove enough water and surrounding finish to inspect the complete connection. Rebuild it with the fitting manufacturer’s compatible gasket, sealant, boot, or flashing system rather than treating it like a hole in the middle of the liner.

Repair decision tree

What you find Most sensible next step
Loss matches likely evaporation, normal seepage, or first-fill absorption Continue measuring through changing weather and inspect periodically. Do not seal a pond that has not been shown to leak.
Small puncture in confirmed EPDM or another compatible flexible liner Use the matching manufacturer repair kit and prepare the surface exactly as directed.
Confirmed soil seepage with suitable soil and a manageable treatment area Evaluate compacted clay, soil-bentonite, or another engineered soil treatment. Obtain site-specific rates and compaction requirements.
Failed seam, pipe penetration, skimmer, drain, or liner edge Use the specialized compatible system for that detail; do not substitute a generic patch without checking compatibility.
Sand or gravel foundation, severe permeability, or a requirement for a highly effective barrier Consider an engineered geomembrane, reconstruction, or another designed lining solution.
Rapid seepage, muddy flow, sinkhole, cracking, slumping, piping, or overtopping risk Stop treating it as an ordinary leak. Arrange a pond leak inspection by a qualified professional and contact the local NRCS office, county conservation district, engineer, or experienced pond contractor.

NRCS identifies pond sealing and lining as engineered conservation practices. Its national standards are technical references, not a substitute for site investigation and project design. Local soils, hydrology, regulations, downstream risks, and construction conditions must be evaluated before work begins.

Mistakes that make pond leaks worse

  • Broadcasting bentonite across a full pond: This is a low-confidence approach, especially when the leak location is unknown or the pond is deep and full. Do not present it as a guaranteed cure.
  • Using one bentonite rate for every soil: Rates depend on texture, clay content, fines, water depth, and the treatment design. Testing and local criteria matter.
  • Removing every tree from the dam: New woody growth is undesirable, but killing or cutting large established trees can allow decaying roots to form new leakage paths.
  • Using an unknown liner sealant: Identify EPDM, PVC, polyethylene, or the shell material before choosing an adhesive, patch, tape, or primer.
  • Draining or excavating without a plan: A large fish pond may involve fish rescue, downstream discharge, erosion, sediment, worker safety, and property impacts. Dam excavation can also remove the material preventing a small seepage path from becoming a failure.
  • Ignoring a wet spot because the water level is not falling dramatically: A growing wet area, muddy discharge, sinkhole, dam slump, or soil carried in the seepage can indicate internal erosion even when the measured level change seems modest.
  • Obstructing an outlet: Plugging a pipe or altering a spillway to retain water can create overtopping and erosion. Outlet work should be inspected and designed, not improvised.

When to call for help

Arrange professional help when the leak is structural, the cause remains uncertain after inspection, or the repair affects a dam, outlet, large pond, or downstream property. Start with the local NRCS office or county conservation district where available; they can help identify applicable conservation guidance and local contacts. An engineer or qualified pond contractor may be needed to evaluate seepage, piping, embankment stability, outlet failure, or a membrane design.

Specialist pond leak inspection or pond engineering services are particularly appropriate when water is emerging from the downstream face, sediment is moving through the dam, a sinkhole is developing, the crest is being approached, or a pipe cannot be safely inspected. Local wildlife-control services may be appropriate for muskrat damage, subject to state and local rules. Do not assume that a product supplier, contractor, or wildlife operator is licensed, insured, or available in your area; verify those details independently.

A practical inspection checklist

  • ☐ Fixed water-level mark and dated readings
  • ☐ Rainfall, temperature, wind, shade, vegetation, inflow, pumping, and withdrawals recorded
  • ☐ Evaporation and first-fill absorption considered
  • ☐ Outlet, overflow, drain, standpipe, joints, and downstream discharge inspected
  • ☐ Dam face, toe, banks, and low areas checked for wetness, lush vegetation, mud, cracks, slumps, sinkholes, and burrows
  • ☐ Muskrat activity and tree conditions evaluated without indiscriminate removal
  • ☐ Leak stopping elevation noted
  • ☐ Liner material identified before any adhesive or patch is purchased
  • ☐ Pipe penetrations, seams, skimmers, edges, and liner field checked separately
  • ☐ Structural warning signs escalated before draining, digging, or sealing

The best pond repair is usually the least dramatic one that matches the evidence. Sometimes the right answer is continued monitoring. Sometimes it is a compatible liner patch. And sometimes the falling water level is warning of a dam or outlet problem that needs engineering—not a product poured into the pond.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much pond water loss is normal?

Not necessarily. Hot-weather evaporation can reach roughly one-quarter to one-half inch per day in some conditions, and some guidance reports even higher losses in particular summer settings. Newly filled ponds can also lose water while surrounding soil absorbs water. Measure the decline over a rain-free interval and compare it with weather and water use before diagnosing a leak.

Can I stop a pond leak by pouring bentonite into the water?

Not reliably. Broadcast bentonite is most limited to very small, shallow leaks whose location is known, and even then its success rate is low. Soil-bentonite sealing normally requires suitable material, site-specific application rates, mixing, controlled placement, and compaction. The pond may need to be drained before treatment.

Can an EPDM pond patch kit repair any pond liner?

Use a purpose-built repair system only after confirming that the liner is EPDM or another material the system supports. EPDM, PVC, polyethylene, and preformed shells can require different primers, adhesives, patches, and seam systems.

When should a leaking pond dam be handled by a professional?

Have the area assessed promptly if seepage is increasing or muddy, or if you see a sinkhole, crack, slump, bulge, soil movement, or water approaching the crest. Contact the local NRCS office, county conservation district, engineer, or qualified pond contractor. Do not casually excavate, plug an outlet, breach the dam, or drain a large pond.

Should trees be removed from a pond dam?

New trees and woody growth should generally be kept off a dam, but large established trees should not be removed indiscriminately. Their roots may decay after cutting and create new leakage paths. Obtain qualified advice based on the tree’s size, location, and the dam’s condition.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Measure the loss, subtract ordinary evaporation and first-fill absorption, identify the pond construction, and locate the failure before choosing a repair. Use compatible liner systems for confirmed liner damage, engineered soil treatment for suitable earthen sites, and professional help for pipes, dams, sinkholes, muddy seepage, or rapidly worsening conditions.
