For cleaner scroll-saw cuts, match the blade to the wood and the tightest curve, set the machine according to its own manual, and guide the work without forcing or twisting it. Before cutting, guard the blade, secure the workpiece, and protect yourself from flying chips and dust.
Choose a blade for the wood and the cut
There is no single best scroll-saw blade for every project. Consider the material, its thickness, the finish you want, and the tightest curve in the pattern. A narrower blade can follow sharper turns; a finer blade is generally suited to thin stock, hard material, or a smoother cut, while a coarser blade is more appropriate for thicker stock and straighter cuts. These selection principles appear in Delta’s SS250 manual and should not be treated as settings or guarantees for every saw.
Check the blade packaging for its minimum cutting radius and choose a blade that can make the tightest turn in your design. A blade that is too wide for the curve may resist turning; trying to compensate by pushing or twisting the work can damage the blade or spoil the cut.
Check blade-end compatibility
Before buying blades, check the saw’s manual and blade holder. Woodcraft notes that five-inch plain-end blades are commonly used, while some saws accept pin-end blades. Pin-end blades are available in fewer types and sizes, so compatibility can limit your choices.

Balance smoothness and cutting speed
Finer blades can favor a smoother cut, while coarser blades can suit thicker stock and straighter work. The appropriate choice still depends on the particular material and curve. Use the blade’s packaging guidance and the saw’s manual rather than relying on a universal blade-size chart.
Set up the saw for the specific model
Scroll saws differ in blade holders, tension mechanisms, speed ranges, and workpiece capacity. Follow the current owner’s manual for the machine in use; do not transfer a tension value or speed recommendation from another model. Make adjustments only when the saw is off and has stopped.

- Ultra Reverse pinless blades are our top selling scroll saw blade. They have a unique design where every third tooth is reversed to prevent splintering on the underside of the project. They also have an aggressively fast cut, while at the same time being a smooth cut.
- The Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse Five Dozen Pinless Scroll Saw Blade Variety Pack comes with one dozen of each of the following sizes: #2/0, #1, #3, #5, and #7.
Set blade tension and speed
Use the manual’s tension procedure and check tension as you work. The National Woodworking Association safety manual advises correct tension and cautions against overtightening setscrews. For speed, Lee Valley suggests starting low and increasing until cutting speed, feed resistance, and finish are satisfactory. These are general approaches, not a substitute for model-specific instructions.
Prepare the workpiece and workspace
- Set the hold-down for the workpiece and keep the stock in contact with the table.
- Make sure the cutting area is well lit and the stock is stable before starting.
- Plan the cut so your hands can remain clear of the blade as you guide the material.
Guide the wood without forcing it
Feed the stock steadily and let the blade cut; pushing aggressively can bend or break the blade. Slow down as you approach a turn, and use a narrower blade when the pattern calls for a sharp radius. Keep the work moving in a controlled way without bending or twisting the blade.

Forcing the work too quickly, using an unsuitable blade, or setting tension or speed incorrectly are among the possible causes of blade breakage listed in Delta’s SS250 manual. Axminster’s manual calls for very slow feed and extra care not to bend or twist the blade when cutting stock over one inch on that model. That threshold is model-specific, not a general capacity rule for all scroll saws.

A scroll-saw blade moves rapidly through the table opening. OSHA identifies the tool as useful for precision cuts in thin stock, but contact with the blade can injure fingers; OSHA also notes that contact can occur below the table. Its woodworking eTool states: “All portions of the blade must be guarded.” Use the saw’s guards above and below the table, and never put fingers near the blade.

- FOXBC scroll blades are designed for the professional craftsman who needs sharp, long lasting blades.
- Scroll Saw Blade are precision sharpened for easy cutting of fine, intricate shapes.
- Offered in a variety of TPI and widths, these blades are recommended for cutting most woods, plastics and non ferrous metals.
- Wear eye and face protection against flying chips and splinters. Lee Valley also recommends hearing protection.
- Use dust extraction or a dust mask, as recommended by Lee Valley.
- Keep loose clothing and long hair away from the cutting area.
- Stop the machine immediately if a blade breaks. Turn it off and wait for it to stop before making adjustments or clearing the work area.
Use a repeatable pre-cut check
- Confirm the blade: match its ends to the holder, and its size and cutting radius to the stock and pattern.
- Check the setup: with the saw off and stopped, set tension and other adjustments using the machine’s manual.
- Secure and position the stock: set the hold-down, keep the work on the table, and make sure the cut path is clear.
- Put on protection: use eye and face protection, plus hearing and dust protection appropriate to the work area.
- Start and test the feed: begin at a low speed where appropriate for the model, then guide the wood steadily without forcing it.
