Scrollsawing Tips and Tricks: Cleaner Curves, Fewer Broken Blades

For cleaner scroll-saw cuts, match the blade to the material and curve, square and tension it correctly, and guide the work without forcing it. Plan inside cuts before you start, keep the stock supported, and use guards and eye protection throughout.

Choose a blade for the stock and the cut

A scroll saw is designed for precision-cutting intricate curves and patterns on thin stock, as OSHA describes in its scroll-saw guidance. Start with the smallest blade that can handle the stock thickness, then consider material, density, and the tightest curve in the pattern. A narrower blade turns more tightly; a wider or more aggressive blade is better suited to thicker or denser stock.

Most scroll saws use 5-inch plain-end blades, according to Woodcraft, though some saws accept pin-end blades. Check your saw’s manual and blade clamps before buying or installing a blade. Tooth configuration also affects the cut: standard, skip, reverse, spiral, and specialty blades are options, but the right choice depends on the stock and desired finish. Acrylic, solid-surface material, thin metal, and glass need blades and setups suited to those materials; do not assume a wood blade is appropriate.

Set up the saw before cutting

  1. Disconnect power before adjustments. Install the blade with its teeth pointing down toward the table, then verify it is seated in both clamps.
  2. Make the blade square to the table. A blade that is not perpendicular can leave a beveled edge even when the pattern line is followed. Fox Chapel’s editors recommend checking blade-to-table squareness for accurate fretwork: their scroll-saw tips.
  3. Set usable tension. Follow the saw maker’s instructions for tension rather than relying on a universal setting. A blade that is too loose can wander; excessive tension can contribute to breakage. Woodcraft emphasizes learning the correct tension for your saw and blade.
  4. Bring the hold-down and guard close to the stock. The hold-down should restrain the work without preventing it from moving, and the guard should be adjusted for the workpiece. OSHA calls for guards above and below the table; use the guarding provided by your machine.
  5. Choose a suitable speed. The NWA safety manual advises adjusting speed to your skill, material, and project. Start conservatively when learning a new material or blade.

Feed steadily and turn without forcing

Keep the work flat against the table with both hands, positioned safely away from the blade, and feed it along the marked line at a steady pace. Let the blade do the cutting. The NWA Learning Center manual puts it plainly: “Let the blade do the cutting. Don’t force the wood.” Forcing the stock increases the chance of a wandering cut, rough edges, or a broken blade.

For a tight curve, use a narrow blade and turn the work gradually as you advance. OSHA recommends slow turns and a narrow blade for sharp curves. Keep the stock supported while rotating it; abrupt twisting or pushing sideways against the blade can deflect or break it. If the curve is too tight for the blade to follow cleanly, revise the cut plan or choose a smaller blade rather than trying to muscle through.

Plan internal cuts and delicate fretwork

Make inside cuts in a deliberate sequence

For an enclosed opening, drill an entry hole large enough for the blade, switch off and unplug the saw, then thread the blade through and reinstall it according to the saw’s instructions. Cut the internal areas before releasing the outside shape when that sequence helps keep the work stable. Avoid backing the blade out of a curve while it is moving; stop the saw and carefully free the work if you need to recover from a cut.

Sand while the work is still supported

Delicate fretwork can be difficult to sand once thin bridges are cut. Fox Chapel recommends sanding before cutting fragile areas. When sanding larger open areas, replace removed pieces temporarily so the remaining work stays supported.

Stack-cut identical parts carefully

For multiple matching pieces, WOOD Magazine suggests using small dabs of cyanoacrylate glue in waste areas to hold stacked stock together. Keep glue away from the finished parts and planned cuts, and confirm the stack is secure before sawing. Its other workflow suggestions include a hook-and-loop blade organizer and marking one end of blades with model paint to make orientation easy to identify: WOOD Magazine’s scroll-saw tips.

Prevent common problems

  • Blade keeps breaking: Confirm the blade is correctly installed and tensioned, choose a blade suited to the material and thickness, and reduce feed pressure. Don’t twist the stock sharply against the blade.
  • Cut wanders: Check blade tension and blade-to-table squareness, then slow your feed and let the blade cut at its own pace.
  • Curve looks ragged: Use a narrower blade for the turn, rotate the work slowly, and avoid forcing a blade around a radius it cannot follow.
  • Workpiece lifts or shifts: Adjust the hold-down close to the stock, keep the work flat, and maintain support as you turn or cut out internal sections.
  • Orientation is confusing: Mark one end of blades and store spares in an organizer so you can identify the installed orientation quickly.

Use guards and protect yourself

Contact with a moving blade can injure fingers and hands, and chips or splinters can be thrown. Keep the saw’s guards in place above and below the table, wear eye or face protection, and keep loose clothing and long hair away from moving parts. Keep fingers clear of the blade, use the hold-down, and turn off and unplug the saw before changing blades or making adjustments. OSHA’s scroll-saw guidance also stresses sharp blades and suitable guarding.

OSHA’s broader saw page cites more than 310,000 workshop power-tool injuries requiring medical attention in the United States in 1995, with about 87,000 associated with power saws. Those are historical figures for workshop power tools and power saws generally—not a current injury rate or a scroll-saw-specific statistic: OSHA saw guidance.
