Screen Drama: How to Diagnose a Failing TV Panel

A built-in picture test is the quickest way to tell whether TV lines, dark spots, flicker, dead pixels, burn-in, or a black screen come from the panel or something connected to it.

A bad TV picture does not automatically mean the panel has failed. The fastest way to separate a failing panel from a bad HDMI cable, source device, backlight, board, setting, or software problem is to disconnect external equipment and run the television’s built-in picture test.

If the defect appears on the TV’s home screen, menus, internal apps, or test image, treat it as an internal hardware fault. Persistent straight lines, fixed colored stripes, spreading dark areas, cracked glass, and severe image distortion are especially concerning. Photograph the problem, avoid pressing the screen, and check warranty coverage before paying for a repair.

The five-minute verdict

  1. Turn off and disconnect HDMI devices, antennas, USB accessories, and network equipment where practical.
  2. Look at the TV’s home screen, settings menu, and an internal streaming app.
  3. Run the manufacturer’s built-in Picture Test or Screen Self-Diagnosis.
  4. If the defect appears in that test, contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
  5. If the test is clean and only one source is affected, troubleshoot the cable, source device, receiver, or signal instead.

Do not press, twist, massage, or flex the panel. Do not open the television unless you are qualified to work around electronics that may retain hazardous voltages.

What “panel failure” actually means

The panel is the image-producing assembly: the LCD or OLED layer, pixel circuitry, and bonded driver connections. It is only one part of a television.

Now Mais TV Stand Panel Replacement
  • TV Stand Panel Replacement. This accent sideboard cabinet is adaptable to various rooms, serving as tv stands for living room& a serving station during meals, a display area for decorations, or a storage unit.
  • Backlight: LEDs behind or alongside an LCD panel.
  • T-Con or display controller: Electronics that help time and drive the panel; the design varies by model.
  • Main board: Handles inputs, picture processing, apps, and system functions.
  • Power board: Supplies operating voltages.
  • Source path: HDMI cables, receivers, consoles, streaming boxes, set-top boxes, broadcasts, or apps.

Symptoms can suggest a subsystem, but they do not always identify the failed component. A line may involve the panel, a bonded driver, a display-control board, or another part of the display electronics. A technician using model-specific service information may be needed for a definitive diagnosis.

Symptoms that point toward an internal display fault

Persistent vertical or horizontal lines

A perfectly straight line that remains in the same position, survives a power cycle, appears on every input, and is visible on menus or the built-in test is a strong sign of an internal hardware problem. Samsung’s guidance is to run its Picture Test; if the line remains in the test image, it directs the owner to request service via its picture troubleshooting procedure.

This does not prove that the entire panel is irreparable. A display-control component or bonded connection can create similar symptoms. In practice, however, panel replacement is often the service outcome.

Colored stripes, duplicated images, or a half-screen failure

Fixed colored stripes, one side of the screen displaying a different image, missing sections, duplicated imagery, or an offset picture are more serious when they appear across all content and worsen over time. Do not diagnose a particular board from a line pattern alone; the same appearance can result from several internal faults.

Large dark spots or columns on an LCD or LED TV

A large dark rectangular zone is not necessarily a group of dead pixels. It may be a failed LED, LED strip, or backlight zone, damaged diffuser or optical layer, or panel damage. Backlight failures can begin in one area and spread. RTINGS’ TV troubleshooting guide distinguishes these broad dark areas from individual pixel defects and notes that repair is frequently uneconomical.

An LCD can sometimes still produce an image when its backlight fails. In a dark room, shine a bright flashlight obliquely near the screen without touching it. A faint menu or picture may indicate that the LCD is working while the backlight is not. This is only an informal clue, not proof. OLED televisions do not use a conventional replaceable LED backlight, so this test does not apply in the same way.

Dead, stuck, or defective pixels

  • Dead pixel: Usually remains dark.
  • Stuck pixel: Remains bright or fixed at one color.
  • Pixel cluster: A group of defective pixels is more noticeable and may be more likely to meet a service threshold.
  • Dirt or debris: Can resemble a dark pixel.

Before concluding that a dot is defective, gently clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth. Sony recommends this preliminary step in its guidance for dark or colored pixels. Never assume one dead pixel qualifies for warranty replacement: pixel policies differ by manufacturer, model, warranty, and region.

OLED burn-in and image retention

Temporary image retention may fade after the content changes or after the manufacturer’s approved panel-care process. Permanent burn-in is uneven, lasting aging caused by static logos, menus, channel bugs, or other elements displayed repeatedly or for long periods.

Burn-in is different from banding or uniformity variation, which may be visible mainly on dark-gray test screens. LG calls its relevant maintenance function Pixel Cleaning. On supported models, it may address certain temporary artifacts or symptoms, but it is not a guaranteed cure for permanent burn-in or a damaged panel. Follow the exact procedure and frequency guidance for the model; do not repeatedly run long refresh cycles as a generic repair.

OLED delamination

A spreading edge or border-area defect may be consistent with OLED delamination. RTINGS describes this as a panel-degradation issue that generally cannot be fixed by a consumer and may worsen. That evidence should not be treated as a universal manufacturer defect declaration, so service confirmation and the applicable warranty terms matter.

Flickering

Flicker can come from an HDMI cable, unstable signal, variable refresh rate, motion processing, gaming features, power problems, software, a panel driver, or the panel itself. Test another cable, source, and input first. Temporarily disable VRR, motion smoothing, dynamic contrast, energy-saving modes, HDMI enhancements, and other advanced processing. If flicker stops when a feature is disabled, the feature or signal path may be responsible rather than the panel.

Samsung documents a model- and software-specific flicker issue involving LED Clear Motion on some 2018 QLED televisions running software version 1270.6; this is not evidence that every flickering TV has the same cause.

  • It takes the raw video signals from the motherboard and reorganizes them into row and column drive signals that the screen’s pixels can recognize, ensuring that images are displayed precisely in the correct positions.
  • The logic board is the core component that drives millions of pixels. Without it, a TV would be unable to drive millions or even tens of millions of pixels. It is the logic board that makes 4K and 8K ultra-high-definition images possible.
  • By optimizing data processing algorithms, it supports high refresh rates such as 120Hz and 144Hz, making dynamic images smoother and reducing motion blur.
  • By separating the complex task of screen driving from the mainboard, the mainboard can focus on signal decoding and system operation, resulting in lower power consumption and reduced heat generation for the entire unit.
  • The logic board features an independent modular design and supports hot-swappable replacement. In the event of a failure, only the specific component needs to be replaced, rather than the entire expensive screen or mainboard.

Black screen with sound

A completely black picture can result from an incorrect input, HDMI handshake, temporary software fault, backlight failure, main board, power board, or panel problem. It does not automatically mean the panel is dead. Check whether menus appear and use the cautious LCD flashlight test described above. Do not use that test as a universal diagnosis, and do not open the set.

Cracks, pressure marks, and ink-like blotches

A crack, spiderweb pattern, impact mark, ink-like spreading blotch, or pressure distortion is physical panel damage. Do not press the area or attempt to straighten the chassis. Samsung says cracked-screen damage requires service and may not be covered; it also notes that replacement may cost more than a new television. LG distinguishes screens damaged out of the box from physical damage occurring later; review its damaged-screen warranty guidance.

Use this symptom-to-cause guide

Symptom More likely causes Best confirmation
Only one HDMI input is affected Cable, source, receiver, or handshake Try another cable, input, and source
Lines appear in the TV’s picture test Panel, bonded driver, or display electronics Manufacturer service diagnosis
One bright fixed pixel Stuck pixel Full-color test screens
Large dark rectangular areas on LCD Backlight LED or optical-layer failure White and gray screens; professional diagnosis
Logo remains visible on OLED Image retention or burn-in Different content, colors, and approved panel-care cycle
Bands mainly visible on gray Uniformity variation or banding Gray test pattern plus normal viewing
Flicker only while gaming VRR, cable, source, processing, or panel Disable VRR and try another cable/source
Black screen but sound works Backlight, power, main board, or panel Menu test and LCD-only flashlight clue
Cracked glass or ink-like blotch Physical panel damage Visual inspection and coverage check

These are probabilities, not proofs. One symptom can have several causes.

Safe diagnostic sequence

1. Document the failure

Take a wide photograph, a close-up, and a short video if the fault flickers, appears intermittently, or changes after warming up. Record the exact model and serial number, purchase date, retailer, date the problem began, and whether the TV was moved, struck, exposed to moisture, or connected during a surge.

An intermittent line that disappears after the TV warms up is not necessarily fixed. Photograph it while present and arrange service if it returns.

2. Eliminate external sources

  1. Turn off connected devices.
  2. Disconnect HDMI, antenna, Ethernet, and USB accessories, leaving power connected.
  3. View the home screen and settings menu.
  4. Try an internal streaming app if available.
  5. Test another HDMI input and a known-good cable.
  6. If possible, test the original source device on another display.

If only one device is affected, investigate that device, cable, receiver, broadcast, or app. If external devices fail but internal apps are normal, suspect the external signal path. LG explains that a normal picture test can indicate a broadcast signal or external device problem in its lines, spots, and dots guidance.

Samsung

On many U.S. models from 2022 onward: All Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → Picture Test. On many earlier models: Settings → Support → Self Diagnosis → Picture Test. Samsung’s current support procedure explains that a defect remaining in the test warrants service, while a clean test points back toward the source or cable.

LG

Depending on webOS generation, look for Settings → All Settings → Support → Screen Self-Diagnosis. LG lists different paths for different versions, so use the route shown for your exact model in its OLED line troubleshooting guidance.

On some OLED models, Pixel Cleaning is located at All Settings → General → OLED Care → OLED Panel Care → Pixel Cleaning. Use it only as LG directs. If the defect persists, service is the appropriate next step.

Sony

Sony’s menus and self-diagnosis options vary by model. Use the television’s support menu or model-specific support page. For isolated dots, first follow Sony’s pixel guidance, including gentle cleaning and escalation when appropriate.

4. Power-cycle and reset picture settings

Turn the TV off, unplug it for several minutes, disconnect external equipment, then plug it directly into a known-good wall outlet and retest. Restore picture settings to default and temporarily disable motion processing, VRR, LED Clear Motion, dynamic contrast, unusual energy-saving settings, and HDMI enhancements.

A power cycle can clear a temporary software or HDMI problem. It cannot repair cracked glass, failed pixels, aged backlight LEDs, or a deteriorating OLED panel. Firmware updates can eliminate software causes, but they should not be presented as a cure for physical damage.

5. Use plain-color images carefully

Full-screen white, black, red, green, blue, and mid-gray images can reveal defective pixels, backlight zones, clouding, flashlighting, banding, tinting, burn-in, and uneven aging. Use them for diagnosis, not as a reason to run repeated refresh cycles.

A defect visible only on a near-black gray pattern may be ordinary uniformity variation rather than a failure requiring immediate replacement. Ask whether it is visible during normal viewing, whether it appears on all content, whether it has changed, and what the manufacturer’s policy says. RTINGS’ black-uniformity explanation covers the differences between LCD and OLED behavior.

Warranty and service: what to prepare

Before paying for parts or labor, gather:

  • Model and serial number.
  • Proof of purchase and purchase date.
  • Wide and close photographs plus video.
  • The date the defect began.
  • Inputs, cables, sources, and apps tested.
  • The result of the internal picture test.
  • A clear statement about whether there is physical damage.
  • Manufacturer warranty, retailer coverage, or protection-plan information.

Never assume that “panel warranty” includes free labor, shipping, installation, or a replacement television. Coverage for parts, labor, isolated pixels, burn-in, accidental damage, and panel assemblies can differ.

Can a failing panel be repaired?

Usually worth pursuing

  • The TV is within the manufacturer or retailer warranty.
  • The problem is a cable, source, setting, or software issue.
  • A technician identifies a replaceable power, main, input, or backlight component.
  • The set is premium, very large, or difficult to replace.
  • An existing protection plan covers the defect.
  • The installed repair quote is comfortably below an equivalent replacement.

Often poor candidates for out-of-warranty repair

  • Cracked or pressure-damaged glass.
  • Large OLED panel failure.
  • Spreading delamination.
  • Severe bonded-driver failure.
  • Extensive defective-pixel clusters.
  • Panel replacement on an older or inexpensive television.
  • A quote approaching the cost of a comparable new set.

A replacement panel may technically exist but be discontinued, unavailable, or sold only as a complete assembly. Do not buy a T-Con or main board solely because an internet photograph resembles your symptom. RTINGS’ accelerated longevity testing found that many TV failures are not economically attractive to repair, but that is testing-based evidence rather than a universal rule for every model.

Compare the total installed repair cost with a comparable replacement, including labor, delivery, installation, taxes, and the repaired TV’s remaining useful life. Avoid rigid percentage rules: screen size, local labor, parts supply, warranty status, and the value of the replacement all matter.

U.S. service examples checked August 18, 2026

Samsung’s Upfront Repair Pricing advertises eligible out-of-warranty repairs starting at $369, including diagnosis, labor, and genuine parts, with a 90-day same-issue warranty. Eligibility varies, and Samsung says a $155 diagnosis fee may apply if a customer cancels or declines service after a technician arrives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LG provides warranty and flat-rate out-of-warranty service routes through its repair scheduling page, but there is no universal TV repair price for every model and symptom.

A Best Buy Geek Squad Protection page showed a two-year plan example at $159.99 and referenced certain pixel and shadow-image problems, subject to the product-specific contract. A protection plan bought after a defect appears will not be a solution, and coverage does not guarantee replacement. Verify current prices, terms, taxes, fees, and availability before purchasing service.

What not to do

  • Do not press or flex the screen to make lines disappear.
  • Do not spray cleaner directly onto the display.
  • Do not open the TV just to inspect a suspected panel fault.
  • Do not unplug an OLED television during an active panel-cleaning cycle.
  • Do not repeatedly run pixel-refresh functions hoping to cure permanent damage.
  • Do not assume a replacement part makes a repair economical.

Final decision tree

  • Only one source is affected: troubleshoot its cable, device, receiver, app, or signal.
  • The internal test is normal: investigate external sources, settings, and signal processing.
  • The internal test is defective: document the result and pursue manufacturer or professional service.
  • The screen is cracked or physically damaged: check coverage, but compare the repair quote carefully with replacement.
  • The TV is out of warranty and the panel appears to be failing: obtain an installed quote before buying any board or panel.
  • The problem is intermittent or worsening: document it and arrange service before the set becomes unusable.
