Scotts Green Max Lawn Food Review: Fast Color, Real Costs, and When It Makes Sense

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scotts Green Max Lawn Food is still a useful fertilizer in 2026 if your goal is fast color on an established lawn. It is a high-nitrogen, zero-phosphorus granular lawn food with added iron, commonly listed at 27-0-2 with about 5% iron. Scotts markets it as a product that can green a lawn in about 3 days, and that claim makes sense: nitrogen pushes blade growth and iron deepens green color without forcing the same amount of top growth that nitrogen does.

The short version: Green Max is a good fit for a lawn that is already reasonably healthy, measured accurately, watered correctly, and not in drought stress. It is a poor fit for a lawn that needs starter fertilizer, soil correction, drainage repair, grub control, weed control, or overseeding work. On our construction and landscape-adjacent job sites, we treat fertilizer as one part of the finished exterior system, not as a fix for bad grading, compacted soil, scalped mowing, or irrigation problems.

For a typical 5,000 square foot lawn, current DIY material cost is roughly $31 to $34 per application when buying a 5,000 square foot bag at common retail pricing. That puts Green Max around $6.24 to $6.85 per 1,000 square feet before tax, shipping, spreader cost, and any soil testing. A 3- to 5-application season on that same 5,000 square foot lawn runs about $94 to $171 in product alone.

What Scotts Green Max Actually Is

Scotts Green Max Lawn Food is best understood as a cosmetic green-up fertilizer with a real nutrient load. It is not just an iron supplement, and it is not a complete lawn repair product. The standard granular product is commonly sold in 5,000 square foot and 10,000 square foot bag sizes. Current listings often show a 27-0-2 analysis, meaning 27% nitrogen, 0% phosphorus, and 2% potassium by weight. The iron content is commonly listed around 5%, with some product copy referencing 5.17% iron.

That nutrient profile tells you a lot. The product is built to add nitrogen and iron, not phosphorus. That is good where phosphorus is not needed, and it can also help homeowners stay aligned with state phosphorus restrictions in places where phosphorus lawn fertilizer is limited unless a soil test, new seeding, or other exception applies. It is not the right product if you are establishing new seed and your soil test calls for phosphorus.

The iron is the reason many homeowners notice a darker green response quickly. Iron helps chlorophyll formation and can improve color, especially on pale turf. But iron color is not the same thing as full turf health. If the lawn is yellow because of high soil pH, drought stress, compacted clay, poor drainage, disease, dull mower blades, or roots sitting under too much thatch, Green Max may make the lawn look better for a short window while the underlying issue remains.

The NPK Math Homeowners Usually Skip

The most useful number on the bag is not the coverage claim. It is the amount of nitrogen delivered per 1,000 square feet. Many extension programs advise staying at or below about 1 pound of soluble nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per application. Green Max lands close to that line when applied at the labeled rate.

Using a 27-0-2 product and a 16.67 to 16.80 pound bag covering 5,000 square feet, the math works like this: 16.67 pounds of product divided over 5,000 square feet equals about 3.33 pounds of product per 1,000 square feet. Multiply 3.33 by 0.27, and you get about 0.90 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is a meaningful dose. Applied evenly to actively growing turf, it is reasonable. Applied unevenly, during heat stress, over a smaller lawn than measured, or before a storm, it can be wasteful or damaging. A 5,000 square foot bag does not know whether your lawn is actually 3,700 square feet, 5,000 square feet, or 6,200 square feet. Measure first.

Simple Nitrogen Calculation

For Green Max at 27% nitrogen, use this formula: pounds of product applied per 1,000 square feet multiplied by 0.27 equals pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. If your spreader setting or walking pattern causes you to put the full 5,000 square foot bag on 4,000 square feet, the nitrogen rate jumps from about 0.90 pound to about 1.13 pounds per 1,000 square feet. That is where burn risk, surge growth, and runoff risk start to climb.

2026 Cost: Bag Price, Cost Per 1,000 Square Feet, and Annual Budget

Green Max is not expensive compared with hiring a professional fertilization service, but DIY cost is more than the sticker price if you are starting from scratch. Current national retail signals put 5,000 square foot bags around $31.19 on sale at Ace and about $33.24 at Walmart. Scotts lists a 10,000 square foot option around $68.49. That puts the material cost in the neighborhood of $6.24 to $6.85 per 1,000 square feet before tax and shipping.

Scenario Typical 2026 Cost What It Means
5,000 sq. ft. DIY application About $31 to $34 One common-size bag per treatment, before tax or shipping
DIY cost per 1,000 sq. ft. About $6.24 to $6.85 Material only, assuming correct coverage
5,000 sq. ft. DIY season About $94 to $171 Three to five Green Max applications
Professional single visit About $64 to $405 Varies by region, lawn size, minimum charge, and included services
Professional annual program Often about $260 to $900 May include weed control, inspections, lime, or specialty treatments

If you already own a broadcast spreader and your lawn is a clean rectangle, DIY can be cost-effective. If this is your first season, add the cost of a spreader, soil test, hose or sprinkler setup, measuring wheel or mapping app, gloves, dust mask, and cleanup tools. A basic spreader can be reused for years, but the first application is rarely just the price of the bag.

Scotts Green Max Lawn Food, 46.67 lbs.
  • DUAL-ACTION FORMULA: Scotts Green Max Lawn Food is a 2-in-1 grass fertilizer plus iron supplement that feeds your lawn and provides deep greening in just 3 days
  • QUICK, GREEN RESULTS: This lawn care product contains 5% iron, a micronutrient that enhances the greening process for fast results
  • APPLICATION: Apply this fertilizer plus iron supplement for green grass to any grass type in the spring, summer, or fall
  • NO STAINING: Guaranteed not to stain concrete, driveways, or other surfaces surrounding your lawn (when used as directed)
  • PEOPLE & PETS DON'T NEED TO WAIT: OK to re-enter lawn immediately after product is applied

The bigger hidden cost is misapplication. Too much fertilizer can scorch turf. Fertilizer left on concrete, pavers, or stone can stain or wash into storm drains. Nitrogen pushed at the wrong time can worsen disease pressure or encourage soft growth that struggles in heat. A $33 bag can become a $500 repair if it leads to reseeding, aeration, or professional correction.

Where Green Max Performs Well

Green Max performs best on established turf that is actively growing, not drought-stressed, and not newly seeded. It is especially useful where the lawn is pale but otherwise healthy and the soil does not need phosphorus. The product can be used on many grass types when applied according to the label, but timing should follow the grass, not the homeowner’s calendar.

On cool-season lawns such as Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue, fall feeding usually gives the best return. Spring applications can help color, but too much spring nitrogen can push fast top growth at the expense of root strength. Summer use should be cautious, especially during heat, drought, or watering restrictions.

On warm-season grasses such as bermudagrass, zoysia, St. Augustine, and centipedegrass, fertilizer belongs during active growth after green-up. Do not force nitrogen too early while the lawn is still coming out of dormancy, and avoid late-season nitrogen that may reduce winter hardiness. In practical terms, feed warm-season lawns when they are fully awake and growing, not just because the weather had one warm week.

Best-Fit Lawns

Green Max makes sense for an established lawn with decent density, reasonable soil moisture, a mowing height appropriate for the grass, and no known phosphorus need. It is also a logical choice where the homeowner wants fast color before a graduation party, home listing, open house, or summer gathering, provided the lawn is not under stress.

Poor-Fit Lawns

Skip Green Max as the main solution for newly seeded areas, thin lawns needing starter fertilizer, lawns with standing water, compacted soil, heavy thatch, active disease, grub damage, or drought dormancy. Yellow grass is a symptom, not a diagnosis. We see this often after exterior construction: a lawn may look hungry, but the actual problem is construction compaction, buried debris, poor topsoil depth, or runoff from a new hardscape edge.

Application Method That Reduces Burn, Stripes, and Waste

The biggest difference between a clean result and a striped lawn is spreader control. Measure the lawn first. Subtract patios, beds, driveways, pools, sheds, and hardscape. If the treatable turf is 4,200 square feet, do not empty a 5,000 square foot bag just because it is close.

Calibrate the spreader on a known area. When practical, use a two-pass pattern at half rate: one pass north-south and one pass east-west. That reduces streaking and helps compensate for imperfect walking speed. Keep the spreader moving before opening the gate, and close the gate before stopping or turning.

After application, follow the label for watering. Light watering often helps move granules off the leaf blade and into the soil surface where roots can use the nutrients. Do not apply before heavy rain. A thunderstorm can move fertilizer into gutters, swales, ponds, lakes, streams, and storm drains before the turf has any benefit from it.

Sweep granules off sidewalks, driveways, patios, curbs, and pavers immediately. This is both a workmanship issue and an environmental issue. Iron-containing products can stain hard surfaces, and fertilizer on hardscape has a direct path to drainage systems.

Safety, Pets, Kids, and Fertilizer Rules

For homeowner use, the practical safety rule is simple: keep kids and pets off the treated area during application and until the product has been watered in and the lawn is dry, unless the label says otherwise. Wear gloves, avoid breathing dust, and wash hands after handling. Store the bag dry, sealed, and away from children, pets, and ignition sources.

Fertilizer rules vary by state and municipality. Several states restrict phosphorus use on established lawns unless a soil test shows need or the application is tied to establishment or repair. Some areas have fertilizer blackout dates, buffer requirements near water, or contractor licensing rules. New York, Minnesota, and New Hampshire are examples of states with phosphorus or turf fertilizer restrictions that homeowners and contractors need to understand before applying.

As a practical field standard, maintain a no-spread buffer near water, wells, drainage swales, and storm drains. A 10- to 25-foot buffer is a reasonable working range unless your local rules require more. Near lakes, streams, wetlands, or steep slopes, be more conservative. Fertilizer belongs on turf, not in runoff.

Most homeowners do not need a permit to fertilize their own lawn with a standard lawn food, but local restrictions can still apply. Contractors may face additional licensing, certification, recordkeeping, or pesticide rules if fertilizer is bundled with weed control, insect control, or other regulated treatments.

Green Max Versus a Soil-Test-Based Program

Green Max can be part of a good lawn program, but it should not replace soil testing. A soil test gives you pH, phosphorus, potassium, and amendment guidance. Without that information, you are guessing. If pH is too high or too low, nutrients may be present but unavailable. In that situation, nitrogen and iron can create temporary color without correcting the reason the lawn is struggling.

A soil-test-based program may recommend lime, sulfur, potassium, organic matter improvement, or a different nitrogen schedule. It may also show that phosphorus is unnecessary, which supports using a zero-phosphorus product like Green Max. The point is not that every lawn needs a complicated plan. The point is that a $20 to $40 soil test can prevent repeated $30 to $70 fertilizer guesses.

Good lawn work also includes mowing and water discipline. Mow high for the grass type and avoid removing more than one-third of the blade at a time. Leave clippings unless disease or heavy clumping is present; clippings recycle nitrogen and reduce total fertilizer demand. Water deeply but infrequently, aiming for root depth rather than daily surface wetting.

When to DIY Versus When to Hire a Pro

DIY makes sense when the lawn is modest in size, the grade is simple, the turf is established, and you are willing to measure, calibrate, apply, water, and clean up correctly. A homeowner with a 5,000 square foot lawn can usually treat it with one bag in under an hour once the spreader is set and the property is measured. For a straightforward lawn, the material cost advantage is real.

Hire a pro when the lawn is large, sloped, irregular, heavily shaded, newly renovated, or showing symptoms you cannot diagnose. Professional help is also worth considering if you need a full program that includes soil testing, lime, weed control, insect control, aeration, overseeding, disease diagnosis, or irrigation adjustments. A pro visit may cost more than a bag of fertilizer, but it can be cheaper than repeating the wrong treatment five times.

For construction-adjacent properties, professional evaluation is often the better route. New patios, additions, driveways, drainage work, and grading changes can alter water movement and soil compaction. If turf is failing along a new walkway or foundation edge, fertilizer may not be the missing piece. The fix may be topsoil depth, drainage, compaction relief, seed selection, or irrigation coverage.

Common Mistakes With Scotts Green Max

The first mistake is applying by bag coverage without measuring the lawn. The second is using Green Max as a cure-all for yellow turf. The third is applying during heat, drought, dormancy, or right before heavy rain. Those three mistakes account for many of the disappointing results homeowners blame on the product.

  • The dual-action, 2-in-1 formula feeds and supplements with iron to enhance and deepen the green color of your grass

  • Application is as easy as connecting your hose to the bottle, pointing the spray nozzle and letting this liquid fertilizer cover up to 2,000 sq ft—no granules, no spreaders, no hassle

Another common issue is uneven spreading. Dark and light stripes usually come from poor overlap, wrong spreader settings, walking too slowly, or opening the hopper while standing still. Fertilizer burn at turns often comes from leaving the gate open while pivoting. Edge staining comes from throwing granules onto concrete and not sweeping them back.

Finally, do not ignore the zero in the 27-0-2 analysis. Green Max supplies nitrogen and a small amount of potassium, but no phosphorus. That is useful for many established lawns, but it is not starter fertilizer. If you are seeding bare soil or renovating a lawn, choose the product based on the soil test and seed establishment needs.

Final Verdict

Scotts Green Max Lawn Food is a solid quick-green fertilizer for established lawns when the goal is color, the lawn is actively growing, and the application is measured. The 27-0-2 analysis delivers about 0.90 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet at the common 5,000 square foot bag rate, which is a strong but reasonable application when used correctly. The added iron helps explain the fast visual response.

It is not a lawn renovation product, not a weed killer, not an insect treatment, and not a substitute for soil testing. If your lawn is thin, compacted, diseased, drought-stressed, or newly seeded, solve that problem first. If your lawn is healthy but pale and you want a fast, darker green at a DIY material cost of roughly $6 to $7 per 1,000 square feet, Green Max is a practical choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Scotts Green Max still a good lawn fertilizer in 2026?

Yes, for established lawns that need quick color and do not need phosphorus. It is best used as part of a measured lawn program, not as a cure for compaction, drought stress, disease, poor drainage, or bad soil pH.

What is the NPK ratio of Scotts Green Max Lawn Food?

Current standard Green Max listings commonly show a 27-0-2 analysis, meaning 27% nitrogen, 0% phosphorus, and 2% potassium. The product also includes about 5% iron for faster green color.

How much does Scotts Green Max cost per 1,000 square feet?

Based on current 2026 retail signals, Green Max runs roughly $6.24 to $6.85 per 1,000 square feet before tax and shipping. A 5,000 square foot bag commonly falls around $31 to $34.

Can Scotts Green Max burn my lawn?

Yes. Burn risk increases if you overapply, overlap too heavily, spill product, apply during heat or drought stress, or fail to water as directed. Measure the lawn and calibrate the spreader before applying.

Does Scotts Green Max stain concrete or driveways?

It can. Because Green Max contains iron, granules left on concrete, pavers, curbs, or driveways may stain. Sweep hard surfaces immediately after spreading and return granules to the lawn.

When should I apply Scotts Green Max on cool-season versus warm-season grass?

For cool-season lawns, fall feeding usually gives the best return, with cautious spring or summer use. For warm-season lawns, apply during active growth after full green-up and avoid late-season nitrogen before dormancy.
