Princeton researchers developed a laboratory-scale cement-paste composite whose best-performing design had 17.1 times the fracture toughness of the hardened cement paste used as its comparator. The result comes from bending tests on small engineered specimens—not from tests of ordinary concrete buildings—and does not mean structures made with it are 17 times less likely to crack. The material uses patterned cement-paste pieces separated by thin elastomer layers, an architecture inspired by mother-of-pearl.
What the researchers made
The material is more precisely described as a nacre-inspired cementitious composite, rather than a new ready-to-use concrete mix. In a June 10, 2024 paper in Advanced Functional Materials, Shashank Gupta, Hadi S. Esmaeeli, and Reza Moini reported laboratory specimens made from hardened cement paste and polyvinyl siloxane elastomer. The peer-reviewed study describes three engineered architectures and compares them with monolithic cast cement paste.
Nacre, the material commonly called mother-of-pearl, combines hard mineral layers with a softer polymer matrix. The Princeton team adapted that principle rather than copying nacre exactly: they patterned cement-paste sheets with hexagonal grooves or separated them into tablet-like pieces, then laminated the cement with thin elastomer layers in a staggered arrangement. Princeton Engineering’s account of the work explains the design rationale.
What “17 times more resistant to cracking” means
The headline figure refers to fracture toughness, a measure of how much a material resists the growth of an existing crack under a specified loading condition. In single-edge notched bending tests, the study’s separated-tablet design achieved 17.1 times the fracture toughness of the constituent hardened cement paste. Its reported fracture toughness was 73.68 ± 8.02 MPa·mm1/2. Those values describe the study’s specimen and test, not a general performance factor for concrete in buildings. The paper gives the test details and comparison.

Crack resistance is not the same as a guarantee against cracking in service. Concrete structures can crack for many reasons, including loading, restraint, shrinkage, temperature changes, and environmental exposure. The study does not establish a 17-fold reduction in any of those real-world outcomes, nor does it measure a building’s service life.
How the layered design slows cracks
The researchers attribute the composite’s toughness to several mechanisms working together. As a crack moves through the material, it can be diverted along patterned interfaces, bridged by material that still spans the crack, and resisted by deformation of the elastomer layers. In the separated-tablet architecture, sliding between cement-paste tablets was also proposed as a way to dissipate energy. These mechanisms make crack propagation more difficult in the engineered specimen; they are not evidence that the same effect has been achieved in full-scale construction.

How the designs compare in the reported tests
The study examined three composite architectures alongside monolithic cast cement paste. The separated design led the reported fracture-toughness and ductility results. For flexural strength, the researchers compared the separated composite with cast paste in unnotched three-point bending and reported statistically similar results.
| Material or architecture | What the study reports | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Separated-tablet nacre-like composite | Fracture toughness of 73.68 ± 8.02 MPa·mm1/2; 17.1-fold fracture-toughness increase and 19-fold increase in ductility, measured as strain at failure, relative to the constituent hardened cement paste. | Best-performing design for the reported fracture-toughness and ductility comparisons; these are laboratory specimen results. |
| Separated composite in unnotched three-point bending | Flexural strength of 0.95 ± 0.24 MPa, compared with 1.49 ± 0.19 MPa for cast cement paste; the authors report the results as statistically similar. | This is a separate strength comparison and test from the notched fracture-toughness result. |
| Layered and grooved nacre-like designs | The paper evaluates these architectures, but the headline result is associated with the separated-tablet design. | Do not assume the other architectures achieved the separated design’s reported gains. |
All figures above are from small, engineered laboratory specimens tested in mechanical bending; they should not be read as construction specifications. The study contains the methods and full results.

Is it available for construction?
The reported work does not establish a commercial product, a field-ready concrete mix, code approval, production at construction scale, or construction economics. Princeton’s coverage describes the findings as laboratory research and notes that further work is needed for field use and to determine whether the approach applies to concrete and other ceramics. The university’s report discusses those limits.
For now, the practical significance is a design strategy for making cement-based materials tougher: use a layered architecture that can redirect cracks and dissipate energy. Whether it can be manufactured economically, withstand weather and service loads, and meet construction requirements remains unestablished.

What the result could mean for infrastructure
If the approach can be scaled and validated, materials that better resist crack growth could eventually help improve the durability or safety of some cement-based components. That is a potential application, not a demonstrated outcome. The study’s bending tests do not show how the composite performs in bridges, buildings, roads, or other infrastructure under long-term use.
