Scafftag traces its origin to 1982, when two people working from a house in Barry, Wales, set out to provide scaffolding-safety solutions for oil and gas companies. Its central idea was straightforward: put an inspection status where a worker meets the equipment. A holder stays attached to the scaffold or other asset, while a removable insert records the current status. If the insert is removed because an inspection has failed or approval has lapsed, the holder can continue to display a prohibition warning.
That physical point-of-use system remained the centre of the company’s story at its 40th anniversary in 2022. By then, the company said it had expanded manufacturing in Barry, added digital production and RFID capabilities, and introduced the SafeTrak inspection and asset-management system, including an app reported as available at the time. The anniversary account describes a four-decade evolution from a small Welsh operation to a business supported worldwide by Brady Corporation, but it does not provide a complete year-by-year chronology or independent evidence that tags alone improve safety outcomes.

1982: a small operation in Barry
The anniversary account describes Scafftag as founded “in 1982 in a house in Barry, Wales.” The starting team comprised two people and contractors. Its early market was the oil and gas sector, where scaffolding is assembled, altered and inspected in environments that can involve changing work fronts, multiple contractors and severe consequences if an unsafe structure is used.

The founding problem was one of communication as much as inspection. A competent person may inspect a scaffold, but the result has to reach every person who might use it later. A paper record kept in an office does not automatically tell a worker at the access point whether the scaffold is approved, awaiting inspection or prohibited. Scafftag’s answer was to move the status signal onto the equipment itself.
The company’s own wording is important here. It reports an origin and a product concept, not a complete legal history of scaffold inspection in Wales or the oil and gas industry. The available account does not identify the founders by name, list the first contracts, quantify early sales or provide a detailed sequence of product launches.

The Scafftag concept uses two parts: a durable holder fixed to the asset and an insert carrying the inspection information. The holder provides a permanent location for the status display; the insert can be changed when the inspection state changes.
1. Attach the holder at the point of use
The holder is positioned where people approach or enter the scaffold, rather than hidden in a remote file or supervisor’s office. The exact attachment method and location must suit the asset, the site’s procedures and the manufacturer’s instructions.
2. Record the inspection state on the insert
After the required inspection, an authorized inspector completes or replaces the insert with the relevant information. Depending on the site’s chosen format, that can include an inspection date, inspector identification, next-due information or a reference to a fuller record.

3. Leave the status visible to users
A worker can see the insert while standing at the scaffold. The system therefore turns an administrative result into a visual control at the moment of access. It does not remove the need for training or a proper inspection; it makes the result easier to find.

The account says that removing the insert can leave the holder showing a prohibition indication. This fail-safe behaviour is the defining feature of the design: an absent insert is not silently interpreted as approval. A site still needs a procedure for isolating, tagging, communicating and correcting the underlying defect.
Why point-of-use status matters on a busy site
Construction equipment changes faster than many document systems. A scaffold can be extended, partially dismantled, transferred to another contractor or affected by weather and nearby work. A point-of-use status display gives crews a quick decision cue before they climb or load the structure.
- Visibility: the status is encountered at the access point, not only in a register.
- Simple state change: changing an insert can communicate that an inspection is current, overdue or failed.
- Fail-visible behaviour: removing the insert can expose a prohibition message instead of leaving an apparently blank approval space.
- Shared language: contractors and visitors can be directed to one consistent status location.
None of those features proves that a scaffold is safe. A tag cannot detect a missing guardrail, determine whether a design has been followed or substitute for a competent person. It is a communication and control layer that must sit inside the site’s inspection, handover, alteration and permit procedures.
From custom tags to a wider product category
As the business developed, the anniversary account connects Scafftag with customer-specific tags and holders, site asset management and a broader range of inspection products. Product-directory material associated with the company describes scaffold inserts and holders, scaffold record cards and other inspection products. That supports the category, but it does not establish current inventory, universal compatibility or the availability of every historical design.

Customization can be useful when a contractor needs a particular language, colour convention, asset identifier, inspection interval or logo-free site format. It also creates responsibilities: the meaning of each colour or field must be documented, workers must be trained, and replacement inserts must not be so similar that an obsolete status is mistaken for a current one.
Manufacturing changes reported around 2022
For its 40th anniversary, Scafftag said it had moved to a new facility and expanded production capabilities at Barry. The account specifically mentions flatbed printers, laser engravers, screen printing and RFID programming. It also describes increased capacity and more production being brought in-house.
Those capabilities point to a shift from a small, largely contractor-supported operation toward a more controlled manufacturing workflow. Flatbed printing can support durable graphics on batches of inserts or holders. Laser engraving can create permanent identification on suitable materials. Screen printing remains useful for repeatable markings, while RFID programming can connect a physical asset to a digital identity where a customer’s system supports it.
The source does not quantify the capacity increase, name the machines, state production volumes or provide independent quality-test results. “Increased capacity” should therefore be read as the company’s description of its 2022 expansion, not as a measured percentage or guarantee of delivery times today.

SafeTrak and the move toward digital records
The anniversary account says Scafftag introduced SafeTrak to streamline inspection and asset-management workflows. It also states that a SafeTrak app was available when the account was published on 30 November 2022, describing the app as retaining the system’s functionality while enabling simpler on-site management.

A digital workflow can address problems that a physical insert cannot: locating an asset across a large site, assigning inspections, storing an audit trail, notifying a responsible person and producing reports for supervisors. RFID programming, mentioned in the same manufacturing account, can provide a bridge between a tagged physical item and a digital record when the reader, tag and software are configured for that purpose.
Digital tools introduce their own controls. A site must define who may create or close an inspection, what happens when a device is offline, how duplicate asset records are prevented and how a failed inspection changes the physical status at the scaffold. The 2022 account does not establish current SafeTrak pricing, supported devices, subscription terms, integrations or continued availability, so those details require confirmation from the supplier before procurement.

How to use a point-of-use tagging system responsibly
Organizations considering this approach should design the process before buying tags. The physical format is only effective when it is tied to clear decisions and accountability.
- Define the status states. Decide exactly what an installed insert means, what an absent insert means and how an overdue inspection is represented. Use plain language that a new worker can understand.
- Set inspection ownership. Name the competent person or role responsible for each inspection, alteration check, handover and close-out. Do not allow anyone to “reset” a tag merely to regain access.
- Choose a visible location. Place the holder where users approach the scaffold and where it remains visible after normal access controls, weather protection and adjacent work are considered.
- Control inserts and holders. Keep blank or replacement inserts secure. Record serial numbers or asset IDs where the site needs traceability, and remove obsolete inserts from circulation.
- Link the physical and digital records. If using SafeTrak or another system, make the asset identifier on the holder match the digital record. Establish an offline process for poor connectivity and a reconciliation check when the device reconnects.
- Train every user group. Scaffolders, principal contractors, subcontractors and visitors need to know that the tag communicates status but does not replace a visual check or site rules.
- Audit the process. Sample scaffolds and records to confirm that the insert, digital entry and actual condition agree. Investigate missing, damaged or illegible holders immediately.
Questions to settle before selecting tags or software
| Decision area | Questions for the project team |
|---|---|
| Point-of-use visibility | Can a worker see the status before stepping onto the scaffold? Is the holder protected from damage without being hidden? |
| Failure marking | Does removing or changing the insert make a prohibition state unmistakable? Who isolates the asset physically? |
| Compatibility | Will the holder fit the scaffold components and survive the site’s weather, handling and cleaning conditions? |
| Customization | Are language, colour, fields, asset IDs and inspection intervals aligned with the organization’s documented procedure? |
| Record integration | Does the digital workflow capture inspector identity, time, findings, corrective action and approval? What happens offline? |
| Governance | Who controls blank inserts, permissions, replacements and audits? How are discontinued formats withdrawn? |
What the 40-year history does—and does not—prove
Scafftag’s history demonstrates a durable product idea: make inspection status visible on the equipment itself, then extend that idea with customized manufacturing and digital records. The company’s account also shows how a specialist operation can expand its production methods while keeping the original point-of-use principle.
It does not provide an independent measure of accident reduction, compliance rates, inspection accuracy or return on investment. Nor does it establish that every current product, app feature or manufacturing capability is unchanged from 2022. Those questions belong in a current technical, contractual and site-specific evaluation.
For construction managers, the practical lesson is to judge any tagging system by the complete control loop: a competent inspection, an unambiguous visible status, prompt isolation when the status is unacceptable, a corrective action record and verification before re-use. Scafftag’s 1982 concept addresses the communication step; safe scaffolding still depends on the rest of the loop being performed correctly.
