Start by identifying where the algae is growing: a patio, roof, siding, or retaining wall needs a different approach from a pond or fountain. Use a cleaner only when its current label covers the specific surface or water-feature setting, and address persistent moisture or runoff as part of prevention.
Identify the algae and the setting
Green growth on a hard surface and algae in water are different problems. Do not use a patio cleaner in a pond, or assume a pond algaecide is suitable for paving or siding. First check whether the growth is on a surface or in a water feature, then choose a method labeled for that use.
Clear accumulated leaves and other debris, and notice whether shade, standing water, or runoff keeps the area wet. Removing debris and allowing hard surfaces to dry when practical are sensible maintenance steps, but they are not a guarantee that algae will not return.
Cleaning algae from patios, roofs, siding, and walls
For a hard outdoor surface, look for a surface-specific cleaner whose current label names the exact material and location. EPA label search results include a hose-end outdoor algae-cleaner category with patios, roofs, siding, and retaining walls among the listed surfaces; that does not mean every cleaner is safe for every material. Review the product label information and confirm the current accepted label before use.

- Check compatibility. Read the cleaner label and the material manufacturer’s care guidance. Do not apply a product to an unlisted surface.
- Review precautions. Follow label directions on application and precautions for people, pets, nearby plants, and runoff.
- Apply as directed. A hose-end format is one available product category, not a promise of better results. Use only the label’s stated method and conditions.
- Consider manual cleaning. A stiff outdoor brush is an option for suitable surfaces. No comparative test establishes a particular brush or method as best.
Managing algae in ponds and water features
Start with nutrient inputs
For ponds and other water features, prevention is a better starting point than a quick chemical fix. EPA identifies preventing human-caused nutrient inputs to waterbodies as an effective way to prevent harmful algal blooms. That guidance concerns surface-water blooms broadly; it is management context, not a home-pond dosing recipe. Look for runoff pathways that may carry nutrients into the water and consider how to reduce those inputs.
Some EPA-registered products are intended for water treatment, while others are limited to aquariums or containerized ponds. Check the current accepted label for the exact product and setting; a label for one type of water feature does not establish suitability for another.

- Fountain Algae Control Solution 8-Ounce Bottle. Also available in 32 oz. and 64 oz. bottles. DO NOT USE WITH FISH.
- Effectively eliminates green water algae, string and hair algae, blanketweed algae and others. Non-hazardous, non-staining, and non-foaming when used as directed.
- Controls green water to keep pond water clean and clear in ornamental ponds and water gardens.
- Use only as directed to keep water safe for pond plants, surrounding wildlife and pets. Not safe for fish.
- Dose every three days until algae is controlled and then treat weekly. Maintain by using .75 oz. of product per 1,000 gallons of water every 5 days.
Use algaecides cautiously
EPA notes that algaecides can be relatively rapid and established controls, but they can also harm non-target organisms. When algae cells break apart, toxins may be released. Do not dose a pond using generic online instructions: suitability depends on the product label and the waterbody, and a treatment that affects algae may also affect aquatic life.
One EPA label result for an aquarium and containerized-pond product includes specific restrictions and precautions. Treat it as an illustration of why labels matter, not as a general recommendation for backyard ponds. Follow the current directions for the exact setting and protect people, pets, and aquatic life as instructed.

Keep algae from coming back
- On hard surfaces: Remove leaves and debris routinely, and let surfaces dry where practical. Check for recurring wetness or shade that may be keeping the area damp.
- Near a pond or water feature: Identify where runoff enters and look for ways to reduce nutrient inputs. Chemical treatment alone may not address the underlying source.
- Before buying a product: Compare the exact labeled use, application format, and precautions. For water treatments, also check whether the label permits that water-feature type and what it says about fish and other aquatic organisms.
Labels, not broad product claims, determine where a cleaner or algaecide may be used. EPA provides a pesticide-label resource; confirm the current accepted label for any product you plan to apply.
