Saudi Arabia’s planned city, The Line, is facing a reported major redesign, with further work said to be delayed until at least after 2030. The original 170-kilometre, nine-million-resident vision remains a historical ambition—not a confirmed current specification. NEOM has not publicly released replacement dimensions, a revised cost, or a new schedule.
What is changing on The Line?
Semafor reported on May 22, 2026, that further work on The Line had been deferred until at least after 2030 and that its mirrored towers were to be significantly redesigned. The report cited people familiar with the matter; it was not a public announcement by NEOM. Semafor also said the redesign’s completion date and future funding allocation were unclear. Euronews had reported in January 2026 that work was under way on a radical redesign, but it did not provide a final replacement plan. Read Euronews’ report. Taken together, the reporting points to a rethink and delay, not a confirmed cancellation or a settled new design.
How the reported plans compare with the original vision

The comparison matters because the old figures should not be repeated as if they were current commitments. Until a revised plan is formally released, there is no sourced basis for assigning The Line a new length, population target, or budget.

What NEOM says publicly
NEOM’s public project page describes The Line as a core part of its long-term vision, advancing through a “phased, demand-led approach,” with sustainability, livability, and innovation as guiding principles. It does not explain the reported post-2030 deferral or give revised dimensions, cost, or schedule. See NEOM’s The Line page.
That official description and the news reports serve different purposes: NEOM’s page states broad project principles, while Semafor and Euronews describe reported changes. The phased-development language alone does not confirm the specific redesign or delay.

Do not confuse The Line’s target with NEOM-wide population figures
Semafor reported a revised NEOM-wide ambition of up to 100,000 residents by 2030, following earlier expectations of 1.5 million and then 300,000. Those figures concern NEOM as a whole, not a newly revised resident target for The Line. The same report said about $3 billion in further development spending was planned for OXAGON; that is not a disclosed revised budget for The Line. Semafor’s report.
Why a major redesign would matter to construction
A change to a development of this scale can affect its sequence, scope, and funding. But the public information cited here does not specify which construction packages, infrastructure works, or design components will change. It would therefore be premature to infer particular site activity or engineering decisions from the reported tower redesign alone.

The dated project history offers context, not proof of current progress: in November 2024, the Saudi Press Agency said NEOM had appointed planning, design, and engineering partners for Phase One and was focused then on initial infrastructure and enabling works. - A specific funding allocation for The Line, rather than spending figures attached to other NEOM projects.
- A clearly identified, Line-specific population target that replaces the original ambition.
Saudi Finance Minister Mohammed al-Jadaan, quoted by Semafor in the context of project reprioritization, said: “If we announce something and we need to adjust it, accelerate it and make it a priority more than others, or defer or cancel it, we will without blinking.” That statement describes flexibility in prioritizing projects; it does not itself confirm cancellation of The Line.
