Verdict: Samsung’s HW-Q990F/ZA is a complete 11.1.4-channel Dolby Atmos system with a soundbar, wireless subwoofer and two rear speakers. Samsung lists it at $1,999.99, making a true 50%-off price approximately $999.99. However, retailer prices observed on August 16, 2026, ranged from $1,177 to $1,597.99, so the headline claim should not be treated as verified without checking the live listing and checkout total.
Check Samsung’s HW-Q990F/ZA listing and verify Best Buy’s current price, seller and package contents before buying.
Is the Samsung Q990F really 50% off?
Only if the same complete, new U.S. system is selling for about $999.99 against Samsung’s $1,999.99 listed price. That is the calculation to use—not a retailer’s potentially inflated “was” price, a coupon value, a trade-in credit or a membership-only offer.
| Observed price | Approximate reduction from Samsung’s $1,999.99 list price |
|---|---|
| $999.99 | 50% |
| $1,177 | 41.2% |
| $1,249.99 | 37.5% |
| $1,597.99 | 20.1% |
Tom’s Guide reported an Amazon price of $1,177 compared with a displayed $1,697 reference price. That is about 30.6% below that comparison price, not 50% below Samsung’s official list price. Best Buy pages have shown different prices depending on page state, including $1,249.99 and $1,597.99. These are useful price signals, not proof that a particular price remains available.

Make sure it is the right Samsung system
The U.S. model is HW-Q990F/ZA. The Q990F is Samsung’s 2025 flagship-style package, but it is no longer the newest generation: Best Buy lists the HW-Q990H/ZA as a 2026 successor.
Do not confuse the Q990F with the 2024 Q990D, the lower-channel Q930F, or an overseas model with a different suffix. Also check that the listing describes the complete system rather than the soundbar alone.

What comes in the box?
A complete Q990F package includes:
- The main soundbar.
- A wireless subwoofer.
- Two wireless rear speakers.
- Remote control and batteries.
- HDMI 2.1 cable.
- Wall-mount hardware and rubber feet, according to Best Buy’s package information.
The rear speakers and subwoofer are central to the Q990F’s value. Comparing its price with a soundbar-only product is misleading unless the cost of equivalent add-on speakers and a subwoofer is included.

In simple terms, 11.1.4 means 11 main and surround channels, one subwoofer channel and four height channels. The height effects come from upward-firing drivers that reflect sound from the ceiling; there are not four physical ceiling speakers.
Atmos performance therefore depends on the room. A reasonably reflective, flat ceiling and unobstructed upward-firing drivers can help. Vaulted ceilings, very high ceilings, heavy acoustic absorption or an unusually open layout may weaken the height effect.

- TRUE 11.1.4-CHANNEL HOME THEATER SYSTEM: A 23-speaker setup combines the HW-Q990F soundbar, a compact wireless subwoofer with dual 8-inch drivers and two wireless up-firing rear speakers. Front-, side- and up-firing channels create immersive sound around and above the seating area for movies, sports, music and games.
- WIRELESS DOLBY ATMOS AND DTS:X: Hear distinct movie, music and gaming effects move precisely around and above you. Wireless Dolby Atmos is available with compatible Samsung TVs over Wi-Fi, while HDMI eARC provides a high-quality wired audio connection for Samsung and other compatible TVs.
- Q-SYMPHONY AND ROOM-AWARE TUNING: With a compatible Samsung TV, Q-Symphony coordinates the TV speakers and soundbar to create a wider, more detailed soundstage. SpaceFit Sound Pro Plus analyzes the room and automatically adjusts clarity, surround balance and bass response.
- CLEAR DIALOGUE AND CONTROLLED BASS: Active Voice Amplifier Pro responds to room noise to make voices easier to understand, while Adaptive Sound optimizes audio for each scene. Dynamic Bass Control helps the dual 8-inch subwoofer deliver deep, accurate bass while reducing unwanted distortion and vibration.
- READY FOR 4K 120HZ GAMING: HDMI 2.1 and HDMI eARC support high-bandwidth audio and up to 4K at 120Hz passthrough with compatible TVs, consoles, source devices, cables and content. Game Mode Pro optimizes directional sound for greater gaming immersion. Compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cabling is required for 4K/120Hz sources.
Key features and connections
- Dolby Atmos: Supports immersive Atmos sound, including wireless Atmos in compatible Samsung setups.
- DTS:X and passthrough: The system supports DTS:X and modern home-theater passthrough formats.
- HDMI 2.1: Two HDMI 2.1 inputs support a 4K/120Hz path, which is relevant to current consoles and gaming PCs.
- eARC: The HDMI output connects to a compatible television’s eARC port.
- Other connections: Optical audio, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are supported, along with AirPlay 2.
- Samsung ecosystem: Q-Symphony can coordinate the soundbar with compatible Samsung televisions. It is not a universal TV feature.
- Room correction: SpaceFit Sound Pro helps tune the system to the room. Adaptive Sound and dialogue-enhancement options are also included.
Samsung notes that connected-device and content-service availability can vary by region and may change. Atmos also requires an Atmos-capable source, service, television and connection path; ordinary stereo or basic 5.1 content will not sound the same as a native Atmos soundtrack.
How good is the sound?
TechRadar’s independent review found strong immersive surround performance, convincing Atmos height effects, a broad soundstage and detailed presentation. The reviewer also highlighted Atmos music performance and a redesigned subwoofer that is more compact than the predecessor’s.

There are trade-offs. TechRadar found the finish and materials less premium-feeling than those of the Q990D, and “compact” does not mean tiny: the soundbar is approximately 48.5 by 2.8 by 5.4 inches, while the subwoofer is approximately 9.8 by 10.0 by 9.8 inches. The rear speakers also need power outlets despite connecting wirelessly to the system.

Setup and compatibility checklist
- Place the soundbar centrally beneath the TV, with its upward-firing drivers unobstructed.
- Connect the TV’s HDMI eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI eARC output.
- Place the rear speakers beside or behind the seating position, approximately at ear height where practical.
- Position the subwoofer where bass sounds balanced, while keeping its vents clear.
- Connect the soundbar, subwoofer and rear speakers to power and allow the wireless components to pair.
- Use Samsung’s current supported setup and audio-control workflow, then run SpaceFit Sound Pro calibration.
- Enable eARC and passthrough on the TV and source device where available.
- Turn on Dolby Atmos at the source and confirm that the soundbar or its app identifies an Atmos signal during playback.
Exact menu labels can vary with TV model, firmware and the current SmartThings version. If sources connect directly to the TV, eARC may be the simplest arrangement, but buyers should verify how their television handles Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS formats and gaming signals.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Gaming and TV considerations
The two HDMI 2.1 inputs and 4K/120Hz support make the Q990F relevant to modern gaming. Check how many HDMI 2.1 ports your TV has before connecting a soundbar, console and gaming PC. Depending on the television, routing sources through the TV and sending audio over eARC may preserve the most convenient setup, but passthrough behavior differs by model.
Q-Symphony is a specific advantage for owners of compatible Samsung TVs. It should not be a deciding factor for buyers with LG, Sony or other brands.

Is the Q990F worth buying in 2026?
The answer depends mainly on the price gap between this 2025 system and the newer Q990H:
- Around $1,000: A strong buy if the unit is new, complete and covered by a reputable U.S. warranty.
- $1,200 to $1,300: Still attractive for a complete flagship-style 11.1.4 package, but compare the Q990H and any remaining Q990D clearance stock.
- Around $1,600: Much harder to recommend unless the Q990H costs substantially more or the Q990F has a specific feature or availability advantage.
- Near $2,000: Poor value for a 2025 model; wait for a sale or consider the newer generation.
The Q990D may be worth investigating at reputable-retailer clearance prices, but confirm whether it is new, open-box or refurbished and determine how much warranty remains.
Alternatives to consider
Samsung HW-Q990H
The Q990H is Samsung’s 2026 successor and the natural choice for buyers who prioritize the current generation. It becomes less compelling when the Q990F is genuinely available near $1,000.
Samsung HW-Q990D
Clearance Q990D stock could offer similar flagship-style value for less. Availability and condition may be limited, so inspect the seller, return terms and warranty carefully.
Sonos Arc Ultra
The Sonos Arc Ultra suits buyers who prefer a soundbar-first multiroom ecosystem. Its subwoofer and rear speakers are additional purchases for a comparable full-surround setup, so it is not a like-for-like replacement for a complete Q990F package at $1,000.
JBL Bar 1300MK2
The JBL Bar 1300MK2 is another 11.1.4-channel Dolby Atmos/DTS:X system, with detachable surround speakers that may suit rooms where permanently placed rear speakers are inconvenient. It does not provide Samsung Q-Symphony integration.
