Depending on the model, sensors and SmartThings software can weigh a load, estimate soil and fabric characteristics, adjust parts of the wash, recommend or dispense detergent, track energy use and send notifications to your phone.
The original “I tried…” story was a Samsung-hosted preview at the company’s London headquarters in April 2024, not a long-term review of one precisely identified machine. Samsung’s UK range has since expanded across Series 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 models, with important differences between them. The practical question is therefore not whether “AI” is impressive, but whether automatic decisions and connected controls are worth paying for in your household.
What happened in the original hands-on test?
The source of the famous “laundry is now my favourite chore” headline was T3’s demonstration visit to Samsung’s London headquarters. The machines were part of a newly announced UK lineup and were available for preorder at the time. T3 described several colours and design variations, but did not identify one exact model number, capacity, energy label or complete specification sheet.
That matters because “Samsung’s AI washing machine” is not one product. Feature availability varies by series, model and region. The preview demonstrates Samsung’s direction and the advertised functions; it does not establish long-term reliability, independent cleaning performance, noise levels, running costs, app reliability or value for money. Read the original T3 preview.

Some of the original preview’s functions may also depend on final retail firmware and regional support. Treat the hands-on enthusiasm as a launch impression, not as proof that every current Samsung AI washer performs identically.
What does “AI” mean here?
In plain English, Samsung’s AI branding describes a combination of sensors, programmed wash logic and connected software. The machine can:
- Detect: weigh the load and collect information about soil or fabric characteristics, depending on the model.
- Estimate: decide how much water, detergent, rinsing or time may be appropriate.
- Adjust: alter selected wash settings such as temperature, bubble generation, rinse time and spin speed.
- Notify: tell you when a cycle has finished or provide status information through SmartThings.
- Recommend: suggest cycles or provide laundry information on premium models.
That is useful automation, but it is not human-like reasoning. It cannot reliably identify every stain, override garment-care instructions or compensate for an overloaded drum, unsuitable detergent or clothes that should have been separated.
AI Wash: less guesswork, not guaranteed better cleaning
Samsung says AI Wash uses four sensors to weigh the load and assess soil level, then adjusts water, detergent dispensing, rinse time and spin speed. Current product pages also describe sensing fabric characteristics and adjusting cycle time on some models. Samsung’s buying guide indicates that the AI Wash cycle is available only on selected models, including certain Series 6 and Series 8 machines, rather than across the entire AI-branded range.
The benefit is straightforward: you may not need to decide every setting manually. That is especially helpful for mixed everyday loads where the correct amount of detergent and water is difficult to judge.
However, automatic sensing has limits. Soil sensors will not treat oil, dried food, grass, blood or cosmetics as effectively as appropriate pretreatment. Mixed fabrics may still require different care, and overloading can harm cleaning and rinsing. AI Wash is best understood as a useful starting decision—not a guarantee that every garment will emerge spotless.
Samsung’s UK buying guide explains AI Wash and model availability.
AI ecobubble: cooler washing with a manufacturer claim attached
AI ecobubble mixes air, water and detergent to create bubbles. Samsung says the bubbles help detergent penetrate fabrics at cooler temperatures, and some models use fabric sensing to adjust bubble generation, temperature, time and spin speed.

One Series 5 product page claims up to 24% more soil removal in a specified cool-water test and up to 70% energy savings against a specified warm-water comparison. Those figures are Samsung’s claims for particular models, cycles, loads and test conditions. They are not universal results for every household or every wash.
Cooler washing can reduce electricity use because heating water is often a major part of a washing machine’s energy consumption. But actual results depend on the selected temperature, load, programme, detergent, wash frequency and whether the machine’s energy-saving mode is enabled.

- AI LAUNDRY HUB: AI Laundry Hub is a full-size laundry center with a front load washer and front load dryer in one space-saving unit. Control both the washer and dryer from the Easy Reach Control Panel in the middle of the unit.
- LARGE CAPACITY: 4.6 Cu. Ft. washer and 7.6 Cu. Ft. dryer allows more items in one load, with a large capacity washer and dryer means fewer loads and less time in the laundry room.
- AI SMART DIAL: Samsung’s AI Smart Dial simplifies your control panel, learns and recommends your favorite cycles,³ and allows you to customize a cycle list to your preferences.
- STEAM WASH: The power of steam gently removes stains without time-consuming pretreatments. Steam is released from the drum so every item in the load is thoroughly saturated, ensuring a deep clean.
- WiFi CONNECTED WITH SMARTTHINGS: The SmartThings App sends you end of cycle notifications and lets you remotely start, stop, or delay your Bespoke washer from your phone.
AI Energy Mode: potentially useful, but “up to 70%” needs context
SmartThings AI Energy Mode can monitor consumption, estimate electricity costs and modify supported cycles. Samsung’s cited example compares 0.539 kWh without AI Energy Mode with 0.145 kWh with it on a particular model and test setup—roughly a 70% reduction for that example.
That is not the same as a guaranteed 70% reduction in your annual electricity bill. The saving depends on:
- how many loads you wash;
- the cycle and temperature you normally select;
- load size and water temperature;
- your electricity tariff;
- whether the mode is supported for that cycle; and
- whether you consistently enable it.
Samsung states that AI Energy Mode requires compatible hardware, Wi-Fi and a Samsung account. On some models it applies when the selected temperature is between 20°C and 40°C. It may also lengthen parts of a cycle or reduce the temperature to save electricity. That trade-off is sensible for users who value lower consumption, but frustrating if speed is the priority.
A network outage should not turn the appliance into a useless object: it should still operate as a conventional washer, although remote controls, monitoring and notifications may be unavailable.
Samsung’s AI Energy Saving information provides the company’s current explanation of the feature.

Selected Samsung models advertise a 39-minute Super Speed wash. Samsung attributes the shorter programme to technologies including dynamic drum movement, bubble washing, shortened rinsing and faster spinning.
“39 minutes” is a cycle claim, not a promise that every load will finish in 39 minutes. Final duration can vary with the load, water supply, temperature, selected options, imbalance correction and the machine’s capacity limits. A large, heavily soiled or high-temperature load may take much longer.
Also remember that the appliance only addresses the washing stage. Loading, unloading, drying and folding remain. A faster wash is convenient, but it is not the same as eliminating laundry work.
Samsung’s Series 7 page describes the 39-minute Super Speed feature.
Bubble Shot and automatic detergent features
The original demonstration included Bubble Shot Technology, which is intended to use a concentrated detergent solution to save water and time.
Current models may also provide automatic detergent adjustment. On one Series 6 page, Samsung says a machine can analyse the previous 10 cycles and claim detergent savings of up to 15% compared with a regular Samsung auto-dispenser setting using a recommended amount.

- High efficiency 5.2 cu ft top load washer delivers powerful cleaning performance while using less water and energy for everyday laundry needs
- Large capacity 7.4 cu ft electric dryer easily handles bulky items like comforters towels and large family loads
- Smart washer functionality allows remote monitoring cycle control and alerts through compatible mobile devices
- Multiple wash cycles and temperature options provide flexible care for delicates heavy fabrics and everyday clothing
- Sensor dry technology automatically adjusts drying time to help prevent overdrying and reduce energy usage
That does not mean the machine recognises every detergent brand or perfectly measures every formulation. Results depend on the model, tank setup, detergent concentration and the user’s configuration. Automatic dosing is most useful for people who regularly over-pour detergent or dislike measuring it; it is less valuable if you prefer complete manual control.
Check the Series 6 detergent-adjustment description.
Detergent Scan and Care Label Scan
The original preview said Samsung demonstrated:
- Detergent Scan, intended to analyse detergent usage; and
- Care Label Scan, intended to analyse garment-care information and customise cycles.
These features need more caution than the better-documented wash and energy functions. The preview did not establish which packaging or garments are supported, how accurate scanning is, how the setup works, what data is processed, or whether the functions were available in final retail software.
If either feature is important to you, confirm it on the exact regional product page and in the current SmartThings documentation before buying. Do not assume that a feature shown at a launch demonstration exists on every current model.
Less Microfiber Cycle
Samsung’s Less Microfiber Cycle adjusts motor revolutions and washing intensity to reduce microfiber released into drain water. A current Series 5 page claims a reduction of up to 54% under Samsung’s test conditions.
This is not the same as removing all microfibers. Results depend on textile type, cycle, detergent, load and test method. It also addresses shedding during washing—not microfiber released during clothing manufacture, everyday wear or disposal.

Current UK examples: the model number matters
As of 2026, Samsung’s UK AI-labelled range spans multiple series. The following examples show why it is unsafe to discuss “the Samsung AI washer” as a single appliance.
| Example | Capacity | What the page highlights | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| WW80FG5L32AEEU, Series 5 | 8kg | AI Energy Mode, AI ecobubble, 39-minute Super Speed, Less Microfiber Cycle and Bubble Soak | Buyers wanting core smart and energy features at a lower tier |
| WW90DG6U85LBU1, Series 6 | 9kg | AI Wash, AI Energy Mode, SmartThings, automatic detergent-adjustment claims and Super Speed | Buyers specifically seeking sensor-led wash adjustment |
| WW90DB7U94GBU1, Series 7 | 9kg | Higher claimed efficiency above Class A, AI Wash, AI Energy Mode, SmartThings and Super Speed | Buyers willing to pay for higher specification |
| WW90DB8U95GHU1, Series 8 | 9kg | Higher claimed efficiency, AI Wash, AI Energy Mode, SmartThings and AI ecobubble | Energy-conscious buyers who will use the connected features |
| WF90F09C4SU1, Series 9 Bespoke AI | 9kg | AI Home touchscreen, AI Wash, SmartThings, cycle suggestions and laundry reports | Premium Samsung ecosystem users who want a large display |
These are UK examples, not a universal catalogue. Capacities, names, energy labels, warranty terms, software and availability can differ outside the UK, particularly in the US. Confirm the exact model and live retailer availability before purchase. The cited pages advertise different levels of efficiency above the minimum Class A threshold; one model’s rating must not be applied to the whole series.

Busy families
A larger drum, automatic adjustments and end-of-cycle notifications can reduce daily friction. The benefit is convenience rather than guaranteed superior cleaning.
SmartThings households
If you already use Samsung’s connected ecosystem, app monitoring and alerts are easier to justify. You still need compatible hardware, Wi-Fi and a Samsung account.

Energy-conscious users
AI Energy Mode is most relevant if you wash frequently, use supported 20–40°C cycles and are prepared to trade some speed for lower consumption. Compare your actual tariff and washing habits rather than relying on the maximum advertised percentage.
Small households
An 8kg or 9kg machine may be more capacity than necessary. A smaller, simpler model could cost less and avoid running partially filled loads, depending on your routine.
Technophobes
Be cautious. The washer can still wash clothes without being a smart-home project, but setup, accounts, updates and app features add complexity you may not value.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuyers seeking the cheapest reliable washer
A conventional non-connected washer may be the better choice. You may give up notifications and automatic optimisation, but you also avoid paying for features you will not use.
Questions to ask before buying
- What is the exact model number and capacity?
- Does that specific model include AI Wash, or only AI Energy Mode and AI ecobubble?
- Is automatic detergent dosing included, and what detergent concentration does it support?
- Does the 39-minute cycle apply to the load size and settings you expect to use?
- Which cycles support AI Energy Mode?
- Do you need Wi-Fi, a Samsung account or SmartThings for the feature you want?
- What are the current warranty terms, exclusions and regional conditions?
- Is the premium price justified if you will mostly use standard programmes?
Verdict
Samsung’s AI features can make laundry easier by removing small decisions: how much detergent to use, how much water may be needed, whether a cycle has finished and which supported energy-saving settings are available. That can be a meaningful improvement for busy households and SmartThings users.
But the original preview does not prove that every Samsung AI washer is dramatically faster, cheaper, quieter or better at cleaning than a conventional machine. The strongest claims—up to 70% energy savings, 39-minute washing, higher soil removal, detergent reductions and lower microfiber release—must remain tied to Samsung’s specified model and test conditions.
Buy one for automation and connected convenience, not because the word “AI” guarantees perfect laundry. Before paying a premium, compare the exact model’s capacity, cycles, dosing system, app requirements, energy label, warranty and real-world price with a simpler washer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Was the original article a review of one Samsung washing machine?
No. It was a Samsung-hosted demonstration of a UK AI ecobubble lineup in April 2024, and it did not identify one precise model number. It should be treated as a launch preview rather than a long-term review.
Does every Samsung AI washer have AI Wash?
No. AI Wash is restricted to selected models and series. Check the exact UK model page before buying; AI Energy Mode, AI ecobubble and SmartThings do not automatically mean AI Wash is included.
Can a Samsung AI washer really save 70% energy?
Samsung cites up to 70% savings in a specific comparison of 0.539 kWh without AI Energy Mode versus 0.145 kWh with it. Your result depends on the cycle, temperature, load, tariff and usage frequency.
Will every load take 39 minutes?
No. The 39-minute Super Speed claim applies to selected models and conditions. Load size, temperature, options, water supply and imbalance correction can change the final duration.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Samsung’s AI washers are sensor-led, connected appliances that can reduce laundry guesswork. They are most compelling when you value automatic dosing, cycle adjustment, notifications and energy monitoring. If you want the lowest price, simplest controls or proven long-term reliability, compare a conventional washer and verify the exact model’s features before paying extra.
