If your Samsung washer shows a key or lock symbol, first check whether it is the Child Lock icon or the door-lock indicator. A smiley-face or baby lock usually means Child Lock is enabled; a plain key or padlock means the door is locked. To turn off Child Lock, use the button pair or on-screen menu marked for your model. A door-lock symbol may remain until the cycle or a safety condition ends, so do not force the door.
What does the key symbol mean?
Samsung washer icons vary by model. Samsung UK distinguishes the smiley Child Lock icon from a plain key or padlock that indicates the door is locked. Check the symbol and the panel labels before choosing what to do.
- Smiley-face or baby lock: Child Lock is on. It disables most control-panel buttons.
- Plain key or padlock: The door is locked. A running cycle or another safety condition may be keeping it shut.

How to turn off Child Lock
The controls differ by model and region. Use the Child Lock marking on the washer or check the user manual for your model number; do not assume one button combination works on every Samsung washer.

Traditional button panels
- Look for a Child Lock label or lock symbol printed between or beside two buttons.
- Press and hold the indicated pair together for the duration specified for your model.
- Check whether the Child Lock icon turns off. If it does not, consult the model’s manual rather than trying unrelated button combinations.
Samsung UK gives examples for some non-navigation models: hold Spin and Temperature, Rinse and Temperature, or + and -; some models require pressing Start/Pause afterward. The page specifies a three-second hold for several combinations, but these are model-specific examples, not a universal sequence. See Samsung UK’s Child Lock instructions.
Navigation-dial controls
For some navigation models, Samsung UK’s example is to close the washer door, open Additional Functions, select Child Lock, then choose Off. The labels and steps can vary, so verify them in the washer’s manual.

Bespoke controls
Samsung Canada describes this path for Bespoke models: open Options, select Child Lock, then choose Off. This guidance is for the applicable Canadian models; do not treat it as a guaranteed menu path for other regions or washer layouts. See Samsung Canada’s Bespoke Child Lock instructions.
Temporary-off behavior
Some models offer a temporary Child Lock setting. Samsung US says to use the designated button pair once until the icon flashes, then hold it again until the icon turns off. On some models, Child Lock can turn back on after a temporary interval. The buttons and timing depend on the model; check Samsung US’s Child Lock guidance.

If the plain door-lock symbol stays on
Turning off Child Lock does not necessarily unlock the door. Samsung notes that a front-load washer may keep the door locked if the load or cycle has not finished. Wait for the washer to complete the cycle and release the lock. Do not pull or force the door while the indicator is on.
If the door remains locked after the cycle has ended and the washer has had time to release it, or the key indicator persists, contact Samsung Support for model-specific troubleshooting. Samsung Gulf’s key-sign guidance also advises seeking support when safe troubleshooting does not resolve the issue.
Find the right instructions for your washer
If the panel markings are unclear, locate the model number and use it to find the matching manual or Samsung support page. Instructions can differ by model and country, including the button combination, menu labels, and whether Child Lock can be temporarily disabled.
