If your Samsung washer displays SUd, 5UD, Sd, 5d, SUdS, or 5Ud5, it has detected excessive suds. Give the washer time to let the foam dissipate; it may resume automatically. If bubbles remain, run an additional rinse using the controls for your model, then use the correct HE detergent and measure the amount according to the detergent label and washer manual. A Sud code by itself does not mean the washer needs service.
What a Samsung washer Sud code means
Samsung identifies SUd and related displays—including 5UD, Sd, 5d, SUdS, and 5Ud5—as excessive-suds codes. The washer may pause briefly while suds dissipate, then continue the cycle automatically. Samsung says the display may flash again at cycle end as a reminder. It does not, on its own, indicate that service is needed. Samsung US lists the code variants and their behavior.
This is different from a drainage error: Samsung lists 5C/5E and related codes separately as drain errors. If the washer is also failing to drain, follow the drainage checks below rather than treating that symptom as part of the Sud code.
How to clear the code and get the cycle moving
1. Let the washer clear the suds
When the code appears, allow the washer to pause and disperse the foam. Samsung describes the pause only as brief; it does not provide a universal wait time. The washer may resume by itself.

2. Run an extra rinse if bubbles remain
Samsung UK recommends adding a rinse cycle to remove remaining bubbles. The button sequence varies by model, so use the controls in your washer’s manual rather than relying on a universal reset combination. Samsung UK’s error-code guide includes this recommendation.
3. Correct the detergent before the next wash
Samsung identifies incorrect detergent or too much detergent as common causes. Use HE detergent and measure it accurately, following the detergent maker’s directions and the washer manual for the load. The right amount depends on the product and load; there is no single dose or number of pods that applies to every Samsung washer. Samsung Care’s US video on the Sud code recommends HE detergent and accurate measuring.

When to check the drain system
A Sud display points to excess suds, not a drain fault. If water remains in the washer or you also see a drain error, Samsung UK recommends checking the drain hose for kinks, freezing, or blockage. Hose-height requirements vary by product, so check the manual for your exact model.
For a front-loader, the debris filter may also need cleaning. Samsung UK recommends cleaning it 5 or 6 times a year. Put a towel or basket below the access point before opening it to catch water, and follow your model’s instructions for safe access.

When to contact Samsung support
If the foam is gone but the Sud code keeps appearing, or the washer has another persistent abnormal behavior, consult the exact model’s manual and Samsung support. Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance recommends requesting service when its check for remaining suds does not account for a continuing code. See Samsung US’s Sud-code troubleshooting guide.
Instructions and displayed code variants can differ by model and market. Samsung UK’s guidance was updated on 23 September 2026; its drain, filter, and rinse directions should be applied using the manual for your washer.
