Samsung The Freestyle 2nd Gen review: two become one

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: Samsung’s The Freestyle 2nd Gen is a remarkably flexible 1080p portable projector, but its headline “two become one” feature is a specialist attraction rather than a reason for most people to buy two. One unit is easy to aim at a wall or ceiling and works well for dark-room streaming. Two units can create a much wider combined display, but the cost, alignment, compatibility limits and unchanged low brightness make a brighter single projector better value for most buyers.

Buy one if portability, automatic setup, Samsung’s Tizen interface and ceiling projection matter most. Buy two only for a carefully planned ultrawide installation and only at a substantial discount. At Samsung’s listed U.S. price of $799.99 when checked on August 18, 2026, this is difficult to recommend broadly; a reported $499.99 sale price makes the standalone projector more defensible. Samsung has also unveiled a newer Freestyle+ generation, so check its availability and pricing before committing to old stock.

Quick verdict

  • Best for: Dark bedrooms, flexible wall or ceiling projection, casual streaming and Samsung households.
  • Biggest weakness: 230 ANSI lumens, limited contrast and high gaming latency.
  • Buy one: Only when its compact tilting design and automatic setup are more important than image brightness.
  • Buy two: Only for the specific ultrawide use case, with compatible content and enough space for two carefully aligned projectors.
  • Recommended price: Much closer to the reported $499.99 sale price than the $799.99 U.S. list price.

The Freestyle 2nd Gen launched in 2023 and retains the original model’s small cylindrical body and rotating stand. The meaningful additions are Samsung Gaming Hub and a mode that lets two compatible projectors combine their images. The core picture hardware is still a 1920×1080 LED/DLP system rated at 230 ANSI lumens, so this is a convenience-first portable projector, not a bright home-cinema replacement.

Two become one: what the ultrawide feature really means

Samsung’s Smart Edge Blending is designed to connect two Freestyle projectors so they can present a larger combined image. Samsung documentation describes using two screens together in landscape or portrait orientation. Samsung Canada also says two 2nd Gen units can be connected and that a 1st Gen can be paired with a 2nd Gen for Smart Edge Blending. Mixed-generation compatibility should be checked against the documentation for the relevant regional model before purchase.

This is not the same as buying one native ultrawide projector. You need two projectors, two power supplies, two physical positions, a sufficiently wide wall or screen and compatible source content. Both units must remain stable: if one shifts, loses its connection or changes focus, the combined image can require adjustment again. The projectors are still separate devices even when their output is presented as one display.

Published coverage also reported that ultrawide video mirroring was limited to Samsung phones. That should not be expanded into a promise that every streaming app, HDMI source, console or phone can use the combined-screen mode. Confirm the exact source and mode compatibility before buying a second unit. Portrait orientation may be useful for a tall digital-signage-style image or demonstration, but it is less compelling for ordinary films and television.

There is another important limitation: two projectors enlarge the viewing area; they do not automatically turn two dim projectors into one bright projector. Each part of the combined image still comes from a 230-ANSI-lumen unit, and brightness per area remains a central constraint. Without an independent two-projector test, it would be wrong to promise a perfectly seamless blend or claim that the result looks identical to a single native display.

The cost of the party trick

At Samsung’s listed U.S. price, two units total $1,599.98 before tax and accessories. At the reported $499.99 sale price for each unit, the pair would total about $999.98 before accessories. Those are simple price calculations, not guaranteed current purchase costs, and Samsung’s U.S. page showed delivery and store pickup unavailable when checked on August 18, 2026.

Once you add two suitable power arrangements, any required cables, a screen or suitable wall and possibly external audio, the ultrawide setup becomes difficult to justify against one brighter projector, a large television or a serious home-theater projector. The two-unit feature is clever, but it should be treated as a niche installation option rather than the default reason to choose the Freestyle.

Picture quality: good convenience, modest performance

The Freestyle 2nd Gen uses a 1920×1080 LED/DLP optical system and supports HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. Its stated image range is approximately 30 to 100 inches. Those specifications sound flexible, but the 230-ANSI-lumen brightness is the practical story: the picture is best in a dark room and becomes increasingly weak as the image grows.

TechRadar found the image noticeably dim at 100 inches even in a dark room, while RTINGS described the projector as dim with subpar contrast and gray-looking blacks in dark scenes. Colors and out-of-box accuracy are among its more appealing qualities, but black levels are not strong enough for a convincing high-end cinema experience. A night-time bedroom image at a moderate size is a much better target than a 100-inch picture in a living room with lights on.

HDR compatibility should also be read carefully. The projector can accept HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG signals, but accepting those formats does not guarantee high-impact HDR. Limited brightness and contrast restrict the visible difference between bright highlights and dark areas.

For a practical result, use the smallest image that suits the room, control ambient light and use a reasonably flat, neutral surface. A dedicated screen can help when the wall is textured or colored, but it cannot overcome the projector’s limited light output.

Setup and placement

The Freestyle’s strongest physical feature is its rotating, tilting stand. It can aim at a wall, screen, ceiling or another surface without requiring a conventional projector mount. Autofocus, auto-keystone and auto-leveling make casual setup unusually simple, and Samsung provides manual Scale & Move controls when automatic correction is not enough.

Ceiling projection is possible, but Samsung specifically warns that it may require Scale & Move adjustment. Digital keystone and scaling are convenient when the projector cannot sit square to the surface, but they can reduce the usable image area and affect geometry or perceived sharpness. The unit still benefits from a flat, stable surface and careful placement; automatic correction is not a substitute for physical alignment.

There is no optical zoom or lens shift. That means image size and position depend on where the projector sits. If you need a large picture in a precise location, measure the room and projection distance before buying rather than assuming the software can solve every placement problem.

Portability: small, but not automatically battery-powered

With its stand, the projector measures approximately 6.8 × 4 × 3.7 inches and weighs about 1.8 pounds. That makes it easy to move between rooms or take on a trip. It is compact, but the projector is designed primarily around external power rather than an integrated battery.

Samsung sells a separate battery base, and TechRadar reported around three hours of operation with that optional accessory. A suitable power bank may also be able to power the projector, but output requirements and compatibility should be verified before relying on one. Do not treat “portable” as meaning ready for cordless outdoor use.

Outdoor viewing still requires darkness, a suitable surface, stable placement, power and reliable Wi-Fi if you plan to stream through Tizen or use cloud gaming. In practice, the optional battery base and carrying accessories materially change both the price and the portability proposition.

Tizen streaming and smart features

Samsung’s Tizen smart-TV platform gives the Freestyle a more self-contained experience than a basic projector. Built-in streaming apps, SmartThings integration and AirPlay 2 casting are useful for households already using Samsung devices. RTINGS also reports Bixby and Amazon Alexa compatibility.

The projector uses Wi-Fi 5 rather than a newer Wi-Fi generation. App availability depends on country and can change over time, as can cloud-gaming catalogs. If a required app becomes unavailable or you simply prefer another interface, an external streaming stick is the practical workaround.

This ecosystem is a genuine advantage for Samsung households, but it is not a universal picture-quality advantage. Buyers who do not care about Tizen, SmartThings or Samsung-phone integration may get better value from a brighter projector with a different smart platform.

Gaming Hub is convenient, not competitive-gaming hardware

Gaming Hub brings cloud-based services such as Xbox and Nvidia GeForce Now to the projector, subject to country, account, subscription and network requirements. That makes casual gaming easier because a compatible service and controller may be enough to start playing without a console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

However, access to games is not the same as responsive gaming performance. The projector is limited to 1080p at 60Hz, and RTINGS found input lag high enough to make it unsuitable for serious or fast-paced gaming. Bluetooth controllers can add another possible source of latency. Turn-based games, party games and low-pressure casual play are a better match.

For a console, laptop or other HDMI source, the projector uses a micro-HDMI input. A suitable HDMI-to-micro-HDMI cable or adapter may need to be purchased separately; TechRadar reported that one is not included. HDMI ARC can send audio to compatible external equipment.

Sound and connectivity

The integrated 5W speaker is one of the Freestyle’s pleasant surprises. Samsung presents it as 360-degree audio, and the small enclosure can sound spacious enough for casual viewing. It does not produce the bass, volume or scale of a soundbar or dedicated speaker, particularly in a larger room.

Bluetooth output and HDMI ARC provide options for external audio. The projector also includes micro-HDMI, while USB-C is used for power rather than presented as a general USB media or data port. That distinction matters if you want to play files directly from a USB device or connect equipment through USB-C.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a permanent home-cinema setup, budget for external audio. For a bedroom, travel room or occasional ceiling movie, the built-in speaker may be sufficient.

Accessories and ownership cost

The headline unit price is only part of the practical cost. Depending on how you use it, you may need:

  • Samsung’s optional battery base.
  • A carrying case.
  • A socket adapter or mounting accessory.
  • A micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable or adapter.
  • A Bluetooth speaker or soundbar.
  • A proper projection screen if the wall is unsuitable.
  • A second projector for Smart Edge Blending.

That accessory list makes the Freestyle most attractive when you already have a suitable dark room, wall, power source and audio arrangement. It is less attractive when you need to build a complete portable or ultrawide system from scratch.

Samsung Freestyle 2nd Gen compared with alternatives

Model Advantage over Samsung Disadvantage or compromise
XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro Brighter and includes USB data connectivity, according to RTINGS’ comparison. Different smart platform and less accurate out of the box.
XGIMI MoGo 2 Potentially cheaper and compact, with a cleaner Android TV experience. Does not offer a brightness advantage over the Samsung.
XGIMI Elfin Better picture quality and a sharper, cleaner dark-room image for similar money. Less distinctive portable form factor and placement flexibility.
LG CineBeam Q Better brightness, contrast and color for a more serious home-cinema image. Less extreme placement flexibility than the Freestyle.
Anker Nebula Capsule 3 Laser Integrated battery and USB-C data support make it more self-contained. Different software and ecosystem, with similar overall picture-quality limits according to RTINGS.

The right alternative depends on what you are trying to solve. Choose the MoGo 3 Pro when brightness and USB data matter more than Samsung’s interface. Choose the Elfin or LG CineBeam Q when picture quality matters more than ceiling projection. Choose the Nebula Capsule 3 Laser when an integrated battery is central to the use case.

Price, availability and the newer Freestyle+

Samsung’s U.S. product page listed the Freestyle 2nd Gen at $799.99 when checked on August 18, 2026, but reported no delivery or store pickup. A March 2026 deal report recorded a temporary Best Buy price of $499.99. These dated prices show why the buying recommendation must be price-sensitive, especially for a product whose second-generation hardware is not a major brightness or resolution upgrade.

Samsung unveiled a newer Freestyle+ or 3rd Gen projector at CES 2026. The cited coverage expected retail availability later in 2026 but did not establish a confirmed current launch, price or stock position. Do not assume the newer model is available everywhere, but do check its current status before paying full price for the 2nd Gen.

Who should buy it?

Buy one if you want a compact projector that can point at unusual surfaces, you mainly watch in darkness, you value Tizen and Samsung casting, and you can find it at a substantial discount. Its automatic setup and built-in speaker make it especially convenient for bedrooms and occasional use.

Buy two only if the ultrawide display is the actual project, not merely an attractive specification. Confirm the source compatibility, plan stable placement for both units, allow for the extra power and accessories, and accept that two projectors do not solve the brightness problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid it if you need daylight visibility, deep blacks, a 100-inch cinema image, serious competitive gaming, built-in battery power, USB media playback or abundant physical inputs. A brighter alternative or television will generally be easier to live with.

First-generation owners have no compelling general upgrade reason. The second generation retains the same broad physical design, 1080p resolution and core image limitations. Upgrade mainly if you specifically want Gaming Hub or the two-projector feature.

Potential buyers deciding whether to wait should check Freestyle+ availability and pricing first. If the 2nd Gen is near list price, the newer generation or a brighter competing model deserves priority. If it reaches a steep discount and your use is a dark-room, flexible single-projector setup, it can still make sense.
