SmartThings now supports two-way Thread network unification: a compatible SmartThings Hub can join a Thread network managed by another ecosystem, or share SmartThings’ Thread credentials so a compatible third-party Border Router joins it. The result is one Thread mesh instead of isolated meshes. It does not, by itself, share Matter devices, rooms, scenes, or voice-assistant controls.
What Samsung changed
Samsung’s October 2, 2025 launch coverage described two-way Thread network unification for SmartThings. SmartThings adopted Thread 1.4 network-credential sharing so compatible Border Routers from different ecosystems can participate in the same Thread network. Samsung’s later announcements continue to describe Thread 1.4 as the basis for cross-brand unified networks.

Availability is not universal. Hub model, firmware, SmartThings app version, third-party implementation and market all matter. Samsung’s 2026 IKEA announcement, for example, says timing and availability can vary by market and that some functions may arrive later: Samsung’s IKEA announcement.

- Thread device: A low-power device that communicates over a Thread mesh.
- Thread Border Router: Hardware that connects the Thread mesh to the home IP network. Multiple Border Routers can extend routing and provide redundancy when they share the same Thread credentials.
- Matter controller: The platform component that manages Matter devices and automations.
- Matter commissioner: Usually the phone app that performs device commissioning during setup.
- Unified Thread network: A mesh whose compatible Border Routers use the same network credentials.
Thread is a networking transport, not a replacement for Matter. Matter devices can use Wi-Fi, Thread or Ethernet; Thread devices require a Thread-capable controller or Border Router. SmartThings explains this relationship in its Matter integration documentation.

- Automations That Work for You: Create custom routines for security, lighting, comfort, and energy savings. Many local automations continue working even if your internet goes offline
- Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings
What “two-way” means
| Direction | Use this when | SmartThings action |
|---|---|---|
| SmartThings joins another network | Another ecosystem already owns the household’s Thread network. | Join another network |
| Another Border Router joins SmartThings | SmartThings is the network whose credentials you want to share. | Share SmartThings network |
These are network-credential workflows, not ordinary Matter-device pairing. The receiving platform must support Thread 1.4 credential sharing, QR transfer or a one-time passcode (OTP), or an equivalent interoperability process.
Supported hubs and software requirements
The launch report identified the Aeotec Smart Home Hub and Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 as initial supported models, with additional hubs expected later. Treat that as launch-era support, not a complete current compatibility list. Samsung’s general Matter documentation also identifies the SmartThings 2018 Hub and Aeotec Smart Home Hub as Matter-capable controllers. The SmartThings 2015 Hub can handle Matter over Wi-Fi or LAN but requires a third-party Thread Border Router for Thread devices; that does not establish support for this unification feature.

- Monitor and control compatible devices in your home using a single smartphone app for your phone
- Automate connected devices in your home and set them to turn on or off when doors are opened, people come and go, and much more
- Works with a wide range of smartphone compatible products
The October 2025 report listed these launch-era versions:
| Component | Reported launch requirement | How to use the information now |
|---|---|---|
| Hub firmware | 0.58.x | Historical requirement from the October 2025 rollout; install the newest firmware offered for your hub. |
| Android SmartThings | 1.8.37.x | Historical launch version; update through the official app store rather than downgrading. |
| iOS SmartThings | 1.7.37.x | Historical launch version; use the current App Store release. |
Do not confuse those figures with SmartThings’ separate Matter-onboarding minimums (Android 1.7.91 or later, iOS 1.6.94 or later, and controller firmware 45.9 or later). Meeting a Matter onboarding minimum does not prove that Thread-network unification is enabled.

Other ecosystems also need compatible Thread 1.4 sharing support. Having a Thread Border Router, Matter branding or an Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home or IKEA integration alone is not enough. Samsung’s announcement says vendors may deliver compatibility on their own schedules. Samsung has documented Matter and Thread credential collaboration with Amazon, but that is not evidence that every Alexa device or account supports this specific two-way workflow.
Before you start
- Confirm that the SmartThings Hub is online and visible in the SmartThings app.
- Update the SmartThings app and hub firmware.
- Confirm the exact hub model and whether your market has received the feature.
- Verify that the other platform’s Border Router and app support Thread 1.4 credential sharing.
- Sign in to the relevant Samsung and third-party accounts.
- Keep the phone, hub and Border Router on the expected home network. SmartThings’ Matter guidance notes that the hub and third-party Border Router may need to share the same Wi-Fi/LAN for discovery and onboarding.
- Decide which network is being joined and which network is being shared.
Path A: have SmartThings join an existing Thread network
- Open SmartThings.
- Open the compatible hub’s Thread-management controls.
- Select Join another network.
- Choose the target Thread network.
- If SmartThings offers it, retrieve saved Thread credentials from the phone.
- Otherwise scan the QR code or enter the OTP generated by the other ecosystem.
- Wait while the hub joins the network.
- Check the hub and Border Router status in their respective apps and confirm that they identify the same unified Thread network.
Samsung may rename or relocate the Thread controls in later app releases, so the labels above reflect the launch workflow reported by Phandroid’s October 2, 2025 report, not a guarantee of identical screens on every model.

Path B: let another Border Router join SmartThings
- Open SmartThings.
- Open the compatible hub’s Thread-management controls.
- Select Share SmartThings network.
- Start Thread 1.4 credential sharing.
- Display or copy the generated QR code or OTP.
- Open the third-party manufacturer’s app.
- Start that app’s Border Router network-sharing or Thread-network-join flow.
- Scan the QR code or enter the OTP.
- Wait for the Border Router to connect.
- Confirm that the unified network is active before commissioning or troubleshooting Thread devices.
What changes after setup—and what does not
What can improve
- Compatible Border Routers can contribute to one wider Thread mesh.
- Thread devices may gain additional routing options and better coverage.
- You can avoid maintaining separate Thread networks for different ecosystems.
- Multiple Border Routers can provide more resilience if one is temporarily unavailable.
What does not happen automatically
- Every Matter device does not automatically appear in SmartThings.
- A device does not become controllable by every voice assistant.
- Matter multi-admin commissioning is not eliminated.
- Non-Matter or non-Thread products do not gain those capabilities.
- A Wi-Fi-only SmartThings hub does not acquire a Thread radio.
After the networks are unified, Matter devices may still need to be commissioned into SmartThings or shared from their original platform using Matter multi-admin. SmartThings says a Matter device can be shared with third-party services, but the third-party app controls its own sharing process. Its documentation also warns that a device already shared with five services may require one service to be removed before another is added.

The Thread menu is missing
- Check whether the hub model was included in the rollout.
- Update SmartThings from the official app store and install all available hub firmware.
- Confirm that the hub is online and recognized as a Matter/Thread-capable controller.
- Restart the app and hub, then check again.
- Consider staged rollout and market availability; Samsung does not promise identical timing everywhere.
- If your model is listed as compatible but the option remains absent, contact SmartThings support.
The other network is not listed
- Make sure the other Border Router is online and its app is current.
- Put the other platform into its network-sharing mode before searching.
- Allow local-network access for the SmartThings and third-party apps.
- Check that the phone and hub are on the intended home network.
- Verify that the other platform exposes Thread credentials by QR code or OTP.
The QR code or OTP fails
- Generate a fresh credential-sharing code and complete the transfer before it expires.
- Enter the code exactly; do not add spaces or alter characters.
- Restart the receiving Border Router if valid credentials are rejected.
- Do not substitute a Matter device setup code. A Matter setup code commissions a device; a Thread-sharing code transfers network credentials.
Devices still do not appear in SmartThings
Unification only joins the network. Check Matter commissioning, multi-admin sharing, controller compatibility, supported device types, device firmware and power. SmartThings recommends checking controller status, signal quality and firmware, and removing and re-adding a Matter device when it remains unavailable: SmartThings Matter troubleshooting.
The unified setup becomes less reliable
A larger mesh can introduce more dependencies. A faulty Border Router, firmware problem or network reset on one platform may affect devices using the shared network. Record the original network arrangement and credentials before changing a stable installation; do not consolidate solely for a theoretical range gain.
Should you enable Thread unification?
It is a good fit when
- You already operate several Thread Border Routers from different ecosystems.
- Thread coverage is weak in part of the home.
- You use Matter devices across SmartThings and another platform.
- You want to reduce the number of independent Thread meshes.
Leave networks separate when
- The existing installation is stable and coverage is adequate.
- The other Border Router lacks credential-sharing support.
- You depend on a manufacturer-specific feature that could be disrupted.
- You have only one Border Router and no coverage problem.
- Simple troubleshooting matters more than consolidation.
- You cannot document or restore the current Thread credentials.
Alternatives
- Add a compatible Border Router without merging networks.
- Share individual devices through Matter multi-admin.
- Use one primary ecosystem and remove redundant controllers.
- Improve Border Router placement before changing credentials.
- Choose Matter-over-Wi-Fi devices when Thread support is uncertain.
- Use SmartThings Hub Groups to extend SmartThings’ own hub coverage, while recognizing that Hub Groups are not the same as cross-brand Thread 1.4 unification. Samsung describes Hub Groups at Samsung Newsroom.
Availability in context
The two-way feature was reported on October 2, 2025, with initial availability described for select hubs and launch-era software. By 2026, Samsung’s public statements show an ongoing Thread 1.4 strategy, but they do not provide one universal hub, firmware and country matrix. Check the current SmartThings app and hub update, your exact model, and the other vendor’s credential-sharing documentation before assuming the feature is available.
