Samsung Shows Off Its AI Home Vision in a New SmartThings Campaign

Samsung unveiled its “SmartThings Meets AI Home” campaign on September 2, 2025, presenting SmartThings as the connective layer for a more automated home. The campaign video shows compatible appliances and devices coordinating lighting, climate control, laundry, household chores and pet care.

It is important to read the announcement accurately: this is a marketing campaign and vision statement, not the launch of a single new SmartThings product or a universally autonomous AI system. The experience depends on compatible hardware, regional availability, a Samsung account, Wi-Fi and routines configured by the user.

What Samsung announced

Samsung introduced “SmartThings Meets AI Home” ahead of IFA 2025, which took place in Berlin from September 5–9. Samsung promoted the campaign through digital channels and outdoor displays, including New York’s Times Square and London’s Piccadilly Circus.

The central idea is that people should not have to operate every device separately. Instead, Samsung imagines a home in which SmartThings connects Samsung products, Galaxy devices and compatible third-party equipment, then coordinates actions around a household’s preferences and routines.

  • Matter + Zigbee Smart Home Hub: Supports the newest Matter standard plus Zigbee for lighting, sensors, plugs, switches, thermostats, and more - thousands of compatible devices. PLEASE NOTE: Z-Wave not supported
  • Easy Setup with Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Get started in minutes using Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection for apartments, houses, and expanding smart home systems - Z-Wave not supported
  • Automations That Work for You: Create custom routines for security, lighting, comfort, and energy savings. Many local automations continue working even if your internet goes offline
  • Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings

Samsung’s global announcement describes this as a personalized AI Home experience. However, “AI Home” is Samsung’s broad ecosystem concept—not a new appliance, operating system or universal smart-home standard.

What the campaign video shows

The campaign presents several everyday scenarios:

  • Climate and lighting: A SmartThings Routine adjusts air-conditioning temperature and lighting together.
  • Household chores: One tap in the SmartThings app triggers supported appliances to carry out coordinated tasks.
  • Bedtime automation: Curtains close and lights dim as part of a nighttime routine.
  • Laundry: Laundry begins automatically at night in the demonstrated setup.
  • Pet care: SmartThings Pet Care helps users monitor or care for pets while they are away or occupied.

These are scenarios shown or described in the campaign, not a promise that every SmartThings household receives the same capabilities immediately. Samsung’s regional announcement and footnotes make clear that device compatibility, configuration and location affect availability.

How SmartThings is meant to work

SmartThings acts as a control and coordination layer. A user can add supported devices, assign them to rooms, authorize integrations and create routines based on schedules, device status or other conditions. Samsung also says the platform can learn from preferences and usage patterns to make the experience more personal.

In practical terms, the setup may involve:

  1. Installing the SmartThings app on Android or iOS.
  2. Signing in with a Samsung account.
  3. Connecting compatible devices to Wi-Fi.
  4. Adding appliances and accessories to the correct rooms.
  5. Granting permissions and linking supported third-party services.
  6. Creating, testing and enabling routines.

That last step matters. The campaign’s routine examples do not establish that the system independently infers every desired behavior. Samsung’s cited requirements include user-created routine configuration. “Connected” therefore does not necessarily mean “fully autonomous.”

Is this generative AI?

Samsung markets the idea under its wider AI Home strategy, but the campaign description does not show that every behavior is driven by a conversational chatbot or generative AI model.

SmartThings Hub 3rd Generation [GP-U999SJVLGDA] Smart Home Automation Hub Home Monitoring Smart Devices - Alexa Google Home Compatible - Zigbee, Z-Wave, Cloud to Cloud Protocols – White
  • Monitor and control compatible devices in your home using a single smartphone app for your phone
  • Automate connected devices in your home and set them to turn on or off when doors are opened, people come and go, and much more
  • Works with a wide range of smartphone compatible products

The demonstrated functions are more accurately described as a combination of condition-based routines, device-to-device coordination, personalization, appliance sensing and remote monitoring. Calling the campaign proof of a generative-AI system running the entire home would go beyond the available evidence.

What is available—and what remains aspirational?

Campaign message What a consumer should understand
SmartThings coordinates the home Coordination requires compatible Samsung or third-party products and supported integrations.
Routines adjust devices automatically Users generally need to create and enable the routine, and its trigger must work correctly.
Pet Care monitors pets Samsung says availability varies by region and identifies support for the BESPOKE Jet Bot AI+ model in its footnote.
AI personalizes the experience Samsung describes learning from preferences and usage patterns; the campaign does not independently verify performance or savings.
Appliances work together Only supported actions and integrations are assured. An appliance appearing in the app may not support every automation.

The Pet Care limitation is significant

Pet Care is one of the campaign’s most appealing examples, but it should not be generalized to every Samsung robot vacuum. Samsung’s announcement says availability varies by region and limits the cited support to the BESPOKE Jet Bot AI+ model.

Buyers considering a robot vacuum or pet-monitoring feature should check the exact model number, country availability and supported SmartThings functions before purchasing. A product may support basic app control without supporting the particular Pet Care feature shown in the campaign.

How this fits Samsung’s IFA 2025 strategy

The SmartThings campaign formed part of a larger Samsung push at IFA 2025. Samsung separately presented its “AI Home: Future Living, Now” vision and showcased connected products including Bespoke AI appliances, displays and Galaxy-related ecosystem products.

The dates should not be collapsed into one announcement. “SmartThings Meets AI Home” was unveiled on September 2, while Samsung’s broader IFA AI Home vision announcement followed on September 4. The campaign supplied the consumer-facing story; the wider IFA program placed that story alongside Samsung’s product ecosystem.

Samsung’s ecosystem in context

Samsung’s SmartThings overview reported more than 285 million users worldwide and support for 196 compatible products from 48 partner companies in the material cited. Those figures are dated ecosystem claims and can change as products, partnerships and regions change.

The platform’s appeal is strongest for households already using Samsung appliances, Galaxy devices or SmartThings-compatible accessories. Samsung’s Bespoke appliance range illustrates the broader strategy: appliances such as washers, dryers, refrigerators and other products are marketed as connected parts of an ecosystem rather than isolated machines.

Practical limitations to consider

Compatibility

Do not assume that a SmartThings logo guarantees every feature. Check the exact model, market and supported actions. Some third-party integrations may expose basic control while omitting features available in the manufacturer’s own app.

Reliability

Routines can depend on the home network, cloud services, account authentication, device firmware and correct trigger settings. A disconnected router or appliance can prevent an automation from running.

Privacy

A connected home may involve data about appliance use, household activity, presence, rooms and—where relevant—pets. Before enabling features, review the required permissions, Samsung’s terms and the privacy policies of connected third-party services. The campaign announcement does not establish a universal data-retention policy for every feature.

Aqara Smart Hub M100 for Home Automation, Matter Controller, Wi-Fi
  • Multi-Protocol Smart Hub with Matter Bridge – The M100 is a versatile smart hub compatible with Thread devices and Aqara Zigbee (** Not third-party Zigbee devices), supporting up to 20 Aqara Zigbee devices and 20 Thread devices. As a Matter Bridge, it connects Aqara Zigbee products to other smart home ecosystems, compatible with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Home Assistant, etc. Note: Use a 5V⎓0.5A power adapter (not included) and keep the product continuously powered during use.
  • Advanced Matter Bridging for Seamless Smart Home Integration – The M100 enables Aqara’s unique features, such as facial recognition and complex automation, to work across Home Assistant and other Matter ecosystems. Expand your smart home with Aqara or third-party Matter devices (requires a Matter-enabled hub). • Local Automation for Reliable Performance – Supports local execution of automations for Zigbee and Matter devices, ensuring smooth operation even without Wi-Fi or cloud access. Enjoy millisecond-level response times for a more stable and reliable smart home experience. (Some automation, such as cloud push notification, will still require the cloud connection to be executed.)
  • Flexible Power & Small Size – Features a universal USB-A port for power and data, allowing connection to power banks, wall outlets, PCs, or routers for a simple and quick setup. The Hub M100's shaft can be adjusted within a 210-degree range, making its placement extremely flexible.
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6 for Faster & Security—This product supports a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6 wireless network connection, which enables more efficient connections with advanced WPA3 security. Wi-Fi 6 ensures smoother performance even in high-traffic environments, allowing multiple devices to connect without compromising speed or reliability. Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M100 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.

Safety

Automation is not a substitute for supervision. Use particular caution with ovens, heating equipment, locks, laundry appliances and pet monitoring. A routine may fail, a sensor may misread conditions, and a monitoring feature cannot guarantee that a person, appliance or pet is safe.

Cost

There is no universal “AI Home” package price established by the campaign. Creating the experience may require multiple appliances, sensors, hubs or compatible accessories, plus installation. Replacing a functioning appliance solely for app automation may not be worthwhile, particularly for renters or budget-conscious households.

A simple buying checklist

Before buying into Samsung’s AI Home vision, verify:

  • The exact model number and SmartThings functions available in your country.
  • Whether the device supports control, monitoring or the specific routine you want.
  • Whether a hub, sensor, subscription or separate third-party account is required.
  • That your phone meets the relevant app requirements. Samsung’s cited Pet Care footnote specifies Android 8 or later and iOS 13 or later.
  • How the routine behaves if Wi-Fi, power or cloud access is unavailable.
  • Installation, warranty, return and replacement costs.
  • Whether buying several compatible devices offers enough benefit over keeping existing appliances.

Readers comparing ecosystems can also examine Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and the cross-platform Matter standard. The relevant comparison is not which platform is universally best, but which one supports the household’s devices, preferred controls, privacy expectations and willingness to depend on cloud accounts.

What the campaign means for consumers

Samsung is positioning SmartThings as the orchestration layer for an AI-assisted home: a system that can connect appliances and services, reduce repetitive controls and make routines feel more natural.

The concept is credible as an ecosystem direction, but the polished campaign video compresses a substantial amount of setup into a seamless story. The real experience depends on compatible products, regional support, account permissions, network reliability and routines that have been configured and tested by the user.

For that reason, “SmartThings Meets AI Home” should be understood as a vision and advertising initiative surrounding existing and previously announced SmartThings capabilities—not as a new standalone product launch or proof that Samsung appliances will autonomously run an entire home.
