Samsung’s new SmartThings Smart Home Hub 2 is now listed in the US at $119.99. The important clarification is its identity: this is the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2, model GP-AEOHUBV4US, sold through Samsung and powered by the SmartThings platform—not a conventional Samsung-branded hardware successor.

It brings newer hardware, Matter and Thread support, Zigbee 3.0, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and a smaller design. But existing SmartThings owners should pay close attention to the reported lack of Z‑Wave support before replacing an older hub.

What launched?

The product listed by Samsung as the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 is the latest SmartThings-compatible hub for the US market. Samsung’s product listing identifies the product with SKU 207025, while launch coverage identifies the US model as GP-AEOHUBV4US.

Aeotec produces the hardware, while Samsung sells it within and supports it through the SmartThings ecosystem. That distinction matters for buyers expecting Samsung industrial design or a direct replacement for an older Samsung SmartThings Hub.

Samsung lists the hub at $119.99 and specifies a 900 MHz processor, 512 MB of memory, USB‑C power, and support for Matter, Thread, Zigbee 3.0, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth. Samsung’s official product page is the best source for the current specification and purchase status.

What is different from the previous hub?

Feature Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 What it means
Processor 900 MHz A newer platform intended to improve local processing, although no independent benchmark is supplied.
Memory 512 MB Launch coverage describes this as twice the memory of the previous model.
Size Reportedly about 50% smaller A more compact installation footprint; the size comparison comes from launch reporting rather than Samsung’s listed specifications.
Power 5V/2A through USB‑C A common, replaceable power connection, provided the required rating is used.
Protocols Matter, Thread, Zigbee 3.0, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth A stronger fit for newer smart-home devices, particularly Matter-over-Thread products.
Z‑Wave Not listed by Samsung; launch coverage reports it is unsupported The most significant limitation for established SmartThings homes.

Launch reports describe the processor as approximately 53% or 70% more powerful, depending on the source. Those figures conflict, and Samsung’s public product page confirms the 900 MHz processor and 512 MB of memory but does not substantiate either percentage. Treat the performance claims as attributed launch messaging, not independent test results. SamMobile’s launch coverage reports the faster processing, smaller body, and protocol changes.

Matter and Thread support explained

The Hub 2 serves two related but distinct roles:

  • Matter controller: It can commission and control compatible Matter devices through SmartThings.
  • Thread Border Router: It can connect Thread-based accessories to the relevant home network and SmartThings environment.

This means the hub can be a useful foundation for Matter-over-Thread lights, plugs, sensors, and other supported device types. Matter-over-Wi‑Fi products use the household Wi‑Fi network instead, while Zigbee devices continue to use the hub’s Zigbee radio.

Matter is not a guarantee that every compatible product will expose every feature in every ecosystem. A Matter light may provide on/off and brightness controls in SmartThings while keeping manufacturer-specific effects or advanced settings in its native app. Support also depends on the device type, firmware, commissioning process, and the current SmartThings implementation.

Some launch coverage says the hub can join an existing Thread network or help combine Thread networks. The precise setup workflow and supported scenarios may vary, so buyers should check current SmartThings documentation rather than assume that multiple Thread Border Routers will configure themselves automatically.

The Z‑Wave warning is more important than the CPU claim

If your home depends on Z‑Wave devices, do not treat the Hub 2 as a drop-in replacement until you have confirmed a migration plan.

Samsung’s listed protocols omit Z‑Wave, and launch reporting says the Hub 2 does not support it. That is a major change for owners of older SmartThings or Aeotec hubs with Z‑Wave locks, thermostats, switches, dimmers, sensors, or alarm devices. The exact compatibility of a particular US model should be confirmed with current Samsung or Aeotec documentation before purchase, but the omission alone warrants caution.

Before upgrading, make an inventory of:

  • Z‑Wave locks, thermostats, switches, dimmers, and sensors;
  • custom SmartThings Edge drivers;
  • security, leak, smoke, or heating automations that depend on those devices; and
  • any device that cannot easily be replaced with Matter or Zigbee hardware.

If essential equipment is Z‑Wave-based, keeping the existing compatible hub may be less disruptive than moving to the Hub 2. A separate controller can create a more complex arrangement and should not be assumed to provide a seamless SmartThings migration.

Is local processing actually faster?

Samsung and launch coverage position the Hub 2 as a faster, more local-first platform. The intended benefit is that local connections and automations can be handled by the hub before cloud processing is involved. In principle, that can reduce delays and allow some automations to continue during an internet interruption.

However, a faster processor does not guarantee that every SmartThings routine will execute faster. Delay may instead come from Wi‑Fi quality, Thread or Zigbee mesh performance, device firmware, cloud services, voice assistants, or the automation itself. No independent measured latency comparison was identified in the supplied evidence, so the 53% and 70% claims should not be presented as tested real-world improvements.

“Local processing” also does not mean that all SmartThings functions work without the internet. Remote access, some integrations, voice-control services, cloud-connected devices, and certain routines may still depend on an online connection.

Features beyond connectivity

Launch coverage also describes energy monitoring and optimization tools, presence-based climate control, and automations involving air quality, leaks, and smoke. These features may be useful in a larger home automation installation, but their practical behavior depends on the connected sensors, appliances, device integrations, and current SmartThings software.

The platform remains actively updated. SmartThings release notes list Hub 2 support and Matter-related improvements, including Matter 1.5 device-type support in 2026 firmware. Firmware version 0.61.6 was listed for a June 2026 rollout to supported hubs, including the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2. SmartThings community release notes also include user reports of some Zigbee devices going offline after updates. Those reports are anecdotal, not proof of a general defect, but they reinforce the value of documenting a system before changing firmware or hardware.

Record the hub firmware, SmartThings app version, accessory firmware, Edge driver version, and connection type—Matter-over-Wi‑Fi, Matter-over-Thread, Zigbee, or cloud-connected—before troubleshooting or migrating devices. Capture logs before deleting devices or performing a factory reset.

Who should buy the Hub 2?

New SmartThings buyers

The Hub 2 is the most logical current starting point for someone committed to SmartThings and building around Matter, Thread, or Zigbee. It provides newer hardware and Thread Border Router functionality without requiring an older hub.

Existing Matter or Zigbee users

An upgrade may make sense if you need Thread support, want a smaller hub, or are building a larger installation around newer Matter accessories. It is less compelling if the existing hub is stable and none of those capabilities are needed.

Existing Z‑Wave users

Upgrade cautiously. The reported loss of direct Z‑Wave support can outweigh the advantages of more memory, a newer processor, and Matter/Thread capability. Replacing a working Z‑Wave installation may cost more and create more configuration work than the $119.99 hub price suggests.

Platform-neutral buyers

The Hub 2 is not the best fit for someone seeking one controller across SmartThings, Apple Home, Google Home, Home Assistant, and advanced local automation. It is primarily a SmartThings ecosystem product.

Price and US availability

Samsung lists the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 at $119.99. As of August 18, 2026, the product page still showed that list price, but delivery and in-store pickup were displayed as unavailable when crawled. Samsung offers pages also showed a $99 promotional price, described as $20 off; promotion timing, eligibility, and live stock should be checked at checkout.

For the latest status, use Samsung’s product listing rather than relying on a launch article that may not reflect current inventory.

Alternatives by household need

  • Older Aeotec Smart Home Hub: More relevant when Z‑Wave compatibility is essential. Check the exact model and current support before buying used or replacing hardware. Aeotec
  • Hubitat Elevation: A more enthusiast-oriented option with strong local-automation control, but generally more technical to configure. Hubitat
  • Home Assistant Green: A highly customizable, local-control-focused platform with a steeper learning curve than SmartThings. Home Assistant Green
  • Homey Pro: A broader multi-brand and multi-protocol platform for buyers willing to pay for a more platform-neutral approach. Homey Pro

Bottom line for SmartThings owners

The Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 is a meaningful new SmartThings option, especially for new installations using Matter, Thread, and Zigbee. Its 900 MHz processor, 512 MB of memory, compact design, and Thread Border Router role address real limitations of older hardware.

But the deciding question is not whether the CPU is 53% or 70% faster. It is whether your home needs Matter and Thread and whether you can live without direct Z‑Wave support. New SmartThings buyers should consider the Hub 2 first; stable Z‑Wave-heavy households should generally keep their current compatible hub until a verified migration path is available.
