Ryobi ONE+ orbital sander vs. random-orbit sanders: what’s the difference?

The Ryobi ONE+ tool most people call an “orbital sander” is actually a random-orbit sander. The RROS18/RROS18-0 moves its 125 mm pad in a 2.5 mm orbit while continuously changing the pad’s rotation, which makes repeated swirl marks less likely on broad surfaces. A conventional orbital, usually a sheet or palm sander, follows a fixed repeating path. It is often easier to control in corners and along narrow edges, but it can leave visible patterning if you linger or sand against the grain.

The short answer: they are different motions

“Orbital” is used loosely in retail listings, so the label alone is not enough to identify the tool. The defining question is whether the pad’s rotation is fixed or changes while it orbits.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Fixed-orbit (sheet or palm) sander: the rectangular or square pad repeats the same small orbit. It is predictable, compact and useful for edges, corners and detail work.
  • Random-orbit sander: a round pad both oscillates and rotates, with the rotation continually changing. The changing path distributes scratches and reduces the chance of a repeated swirl pattern.

That makes the Ryobi ONE+ random-orbit sander the more versatile choice for a broad tabletop, panel or painted surface. A fixed-orbit palm sander remains useful when the job is dominated by inside corners, narrow edges or very controlled detail.

How each sanding motion works

Fixed orbital action

A sheet sander’s pad moves in a regular orbit. Because the path repeats, abrasive scratches can line up into visible marks when the tool is held still, pressed too hard, or used with a coarse disc for too long. The square pad reaches closer to corners than a round pad, and its straight sides make it easier to work along an edge without rolling over it.

Fixed-orbit sanders commonly use quarter-, half- or full-sheet abrasives, depending on the model. The exact paper format, clamp system and hole pattern vary, so sheets are not automatically interchangeable between brands or models.

Random-orbit action

A random-orbit pad oscillates while its rotation continually changes. The RROS18 is specified with a 2.5 mm random-orbit sanding motion and a speed of up to 20,000 OPM (orbits per minute) on RYOBI’s current product information. The Australian listing identifies an 18V motor and a 125 mm disc.

The changing rotation does not make the tool scratch-free. A clogged or worn disc, excessive pressure, stopping on the work, or skipping grits can still leave defects. It makes the scratch pattern less repetitive, so the defects are usually less obvious after a proper progression of grits.

The figures above are manufacturer-published specifications, not a side-by-side laboratory test. The Canadian PCL406’s 10,000 OPM and 3/32-inch orbit should not be treated as a performance measurement for the RROS18. If a listing in your country uses a different model code, verify its pad diameter, speed and dust-port arrangement before buying accessories.

What difference will you notice on the job?

Decision factor Random-orbit sander, such as RROS18 Fixed-orbit sheet or palm sander
Finish and swirl risk Changing rotation disperses scratches and is suited to a swirl-free finish when used with suitable grits and light pressure. Repeating orbit can show a pattern if the operator dwells, presses hard or skips grits.
Stock removal Fast enough for light-to-medium paint removal and general woodworking; the round disc gives a broad working area. Good for controlled sanding but usually less efficient on a large flat surface.
Edges and corners Round pad cannot reach a square inside corner and can catch an exposed edge if tilted. Square or rectangular pad reaches corners and tracks a straight edge more easily.
Pad and abrasive shape Uses round 125 mm (5-inch) hook-and-loop discs on the RROS18 specification. Uses model-specific sheets or rectangular hook-and-loop abrasives.
Dust collection RROS18 information describes active extraction and a dust port; the PCL406 listing documents 1-1/4-inch and 1-7/8-inch hose ports. Collection depends on the particular sander, paper-hole pattern and dust port.
Vibration and handling The Canadian PCL406 listing claims 40% reduced vibration. That claim applies to that regional model, not automatically to every ONE+ sander. Handling varies by design; no comparable manufacturer figure is established here.
Battery and runtime Runs from a compatible ONE+ battery. Runtime changes with battery capacity, grit, pressure, material and extraction load; a universal runtime figure is not published for these listings. Corded models avoid battery changes; cordless models depend on their own battery system.
Abrasive availability 125 mm hook-and-loop discs are widely sold in common grits, but hole layout and backing quality still matter. Sheets are easy to cut or buy, although the correct clamp or hole pattern is model-dependent.

Which type suits your project?

Choose random orbit for broad, visible surfaces

For a tabletop, door, cabinet side, benchtop, floor-board repair or a large painted panel, the round random-orbit pad is generally the safer all-purpose option. It removes material while leaving a less repetitive scratch pattern, so the surface can be taken through a normal grit sequence before staining or painting.

Keep the sander moving in overlapping passes. Do not use the edge of the pad as a cutting tool, and do not stop the pad on the work while it is spinning. Those habits create more risk than the name printed on the tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose fixed orbit for corners and narrow edges

A palm or sheet sander is easier to place into an inside corner and along a narrow stile. Its straight pad edge gives visual control when you must stop exactly at a boundary. It is also useful for detail parts where a five-inch round pad would bridge the work or strike adjacent surfaces.

Use both when the work contains both conditions

On a cabinet, for example, a random-orbit tool can level the doors and side panels, while a sheet sander or hand sanding block handles inside corners and thin edge profiles. Changing tools for the geometry is often faster than forcing one pad shape to do every task.

How to use the RYOBI 18V ONE+ random orbit sander

  1. Confirm the model. Read the tool label and local manual. Confirm whether it takes a 125 mm disc, which dust port is fitted and which battery is approved for your regional version.
  2. Prepare the surface. Remove nails, staples, loose paint and hardware. Vacuum or wipe away grit that could be dragged under the disc.
  3. Install a charged battery. Use a battery in good condition and make sure it locks fully. Keep a second battery available for a large surface because published runtime depends on conditions and is not a fixed number.
  4. Select the starting grit. Use only enough coarseness to remove the defect. A very coarse disc cuts faster but leaves deeper scratches that require more subsequent sanding.
  5. Fit the disc. Press a compatible 125 mm hook-and-loop disc evenly onto the pad, aligning its holes with the pad holes where applicable. A wrinkled or off-centre disc can vibrate, tear or sand unevenly.
  6. Connect extraction. Attach a suitable shop-vac hose or dust bag. On the PCL406, the documented hose ports are 1-1/4-inch and 1-7/8-inch; use an adapter only after checking the actual fit. The RROS18 listings identify a dust port but do not establish a universal hose diameter.
  7. Test on scrap. Run the chosen grit on an offcut of the same material. Check removal rate, scratch visibility and whether the finish or paint reacts badly.
  8. Start on the work. Place the pad flat before starting, then switch on. Let the abrasive do the cutting; extra downward force slows the pad and can increase marks.
  9. Make overlapping passes. Move steadily with the grain when preparing wood for finish. Overlap each pass by roughly half the pad width and keep the tool moving at edges.
  10. Progress through grits. Vacuum between stages and change to the next finer disc only after the previous scratch pattern or coating defect is removed. The RROS18 Australian listing shows 80-, 120- and 240-grit sheets as supplied; additional compatible grits may be needed for a particular finish.
  11. Inspect under the intended lighting. Raking light reveals cross-scratches, swirl marks and low spots that ordinary overhead light can hide. Correct defects before applying stain, paint or clear finish.
  12. Clean the tool. Remove the battery before changing discs or clearing dust. Brush dust from the pad and vents, empty the extractor and store discs flat.

Abrasives: size, attachment and grit

The RROS18 specification uses a 125 mm hook-and-loop pad. Buy 125 mm hook-and-loop sanding discs that match the pad diameter and, when extraction is used, the hole layout. A disc with the right diameter but the wrong hole pattern may collect poorly; one that overhangs the pad can catch an edge.

The listed supplied set of 80, 120 and 240 grit covers a practical progression from faster removal to finish preparation. Grit numbering is not a substitute for inspection: paint thickness, wood species, old finish and the desired coating determine where to begin and when to stop. Replace a disc when its abrasive is glazed, clogged or no longer cuts; pressing harder on a worn disc usually increases heat and marking rather than restoring performance.

Dust extraction and cleanup

Sanding dust is both a visibility problem and a respiratory hazard. Connect extraction whenever the port and hose fit securely, and keep the extractor filter clear enough to maintain airflow. The Canadian PCL406 documentation specifically lists 1-1/4-inch and 1-7/8-inch hose ports. Other regional ONE+ models may use different geometry, so measure or check the manual before ordering a sander dust-extraction hose or adapter.

Extraction does not eliminate airborne dust. Wear eye protection and a properly selected respirator for the material and coating being removed, and ventilate the area. Never assume that a dust bag captures hazardous paint, lead or treated-wood particles safely; follow the coating and local disposal requirements.

Battery, vibration and ergonomics

The RROS18 is an 18V cordless tool in the ONE+ system, and the Australian listing gives a 1.18 kg tool weight. That weight is the bare tool figure in that listing; adding the battery changes balance and total weight. Keep the battery-supported end level rather than levering the pad into the surface.

The PCL406 Canadian listing claims 40% reduced vibration, but that percentage belongs to that model and its stated comparison. It is not evidence that every RROS18 or every battery combination produces the same result. No independent noise measurement or comparative laboratory test establishes a universal advantage for one model.

For long sessions, alternate hands when safe, keep wrists straight and let the tool slide rather than gripping it tightly. Excessive pressure defeats the random-orbit action and quickly fatigues the operator.

Common problems and fixes

Swirl marks appear after sanding

  • Use a fresh disc and the next finer grit to remove the previous pattern.
  • Reduce downward pressure and keep the pad flat.
  • Start and stop with the tool on the surface, and keep it moving.
  • Check that the disc is centred and that dust is not clogging the abrasive.

The tool removes material too slowly

  • Confirm that the disc is not glazed or loaded with paint.
  • Use an appropriate coarser grit rather than forcing the tool.
  • Check battery charge and extraction airflow.
  • Test whether the coating requires a scraper or chemical removal before sanding.

The finish is uneven near an edge

  • Do not tilt the round pad; its edge can cut a narrow groove.
  • Back away from the edge and finish the last strip by hand or with a fixed-orbit sheet sander.
  • Support thin work so vibration does not let the pad tip.

Dust escapes around the hose

  • Verify the port size for the exact regional model.
  • Use a properly sized adapter rather than forcing a loose hose over the port.
  • Inspect the hose, extractor seal and filter for leaks or blockage.

Buying checklist

When selecting the RYOBI 18V ONE+ random orbit sander, check these points before ordering:

  • The model code printed on the tool or listing, especially if you are comparing RROS18/RROS18-0 with the Canadian PCL406.
  • Pad diameter and attachment: the RROS18 information identifies a 125 mm hook-and-loop system.
  • Published speed and orbit specification for your region, not a figure copied from another market.
  • Dust-port shape and whether your extractor hose needs an adapter.
  • Battery compatibility and the number of charged batteries needed for the surface area.
  • Availability of replacement discs in the grits you use, including the correct hole pattern.
  • Whether the job includes corners that justify keeping a sheet sander or sanding block available.

Safety essentials

  • Wear eye protection, hearing protection and respiratory protection suited to the dust and coating.
  • Disconnect the battery before changing discs, clearing a jam or servicing the pad.
  • Secure the workpiece so the sander cannot pull it across the bench.
  • Keep the cord of a shop vacuum, loose clothing and hair away from the moving pad.
  • Do not sand coatings that may contain lead or other hazardous materials without following the applicable containment and disposal rules.
  • Allow the tool and battery to cool if they become unusually hot; investigate a blocked pad, overloaded disc or restricted extractor before continuing.

Bottom line for the choice

For most broad wood and paint-preparation work, choose the Ryobi ONE+ random-orbit design because its changing pad rotation offers a useful balance of removal speed and finish quality. Choose a fixed-orbit palm or sheet sander when corner access, straight-edge control or small detail matters more than covering area quickly. The correct answer is therefore task-dependent, and the model-specific specifications matter more than the word “orbital” on the box.
