The rule of three is a flexible way to make a planting read as a group: one plant can stand alone as a specimen, two can look like a pair, and three often establish a recognizable cluster. Use a loose triangle as a starting arrangement, then adjust for the bed, each plant’s mature size and the look you want. It is a design heuristic, not a rule that every plant must be planted in threes.
What the rule of three means
In garden design, the rule describes how plantings may read visually: a single plant can act as an individual focal point, two can suggest a pair, and three can establish a group. Klora summarizes this as: “A single plant tends to read as an object. Two plants can look like a pair. Three plants begin to form a group.” That is useful design guidance, not a measured or universal response.
The goal is to make a planting feel intentional. Three plants can provide a clear starting group; a larger planting may need five, seven or more plants to read as a broad drift or mass. The bed’s scale and the plants’ growth habits matter more than following a fixed count.
How to arrange three plants
Try a loose triangle
Place the plants in a staggered or loose triangular arrangement rather than a rigid straight row when you want a relaxed look. Offset one plant and adapt the spacing to the border’s shape. A straight line may make sense in a formal design, but it can look mechanical in a looser planting.

Choose plants that belong together visually
The plants do not have to be identical. A group can use the same plant three times, or combine varieties that share a visible feature such as color, foliage texture, height or growth habit. If mixing varieties, choose a unifying quality so the cluster reads as one composition rather than unrelated purchases.
Size the group for the plants and bed
Check each plant’s mature size before deciding how closely to space it. A grouping should suit the border and leave room for growth; plants that look well spaced at planting time may fill in over the seasons. University of Maine Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Jean L. Potuchek describes adapting as plants grew and site conditions changed, a reminder that garden layouts develop over time.

Repeat the pattern to create rhythm
In a larger bed, repeating a plant, group, color, form or texture can connect separate areas and help the garden read as a composition. Potuchek writes that she learned to group most plants in threes and repeat the grouping three times in a large flower bed. That is one approach, not a required formula: repeat what helps the design feel cohesive, and vary the number or spacing where the bed calls for it.
When to use a different number

These are options rather than prescriptions. Repeating every species exactly three times can become formulaic, and an odd number is not automatically better. Let the visual intent determine whether a specimen, pair, small group or mass fits best.

Apply the idea to containers and real growing conditions
The same grouping principle can work on a patio: arrange three or five containers at varied heights or stagger them instead of lining them up mechanically. Choose plants for compatible light and water needs, and make sure the containers and planting space suit their eventual growth. A pleasing arrangement will not compensate for mismatched growing requirements.
Before planting, consider how the site and plants will change through the seasons and over several years. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension account describes adjusting a garden as plants grew and conditions changed. Treat the arrangement as a starting plan that can be adapted as the garden develops.

What the rule can—and cannot—tell you
The rule of three is a practical design heuristic, not proof that three is scientifically optimal or that odd-numbered groups always look better. The University of Maine account is a Master Gardener Volunteer’s first-person experience, while Klora and Gardening Know How offer garden-design guidance rather than controlled measurements of aesthetic preference. Use the principle to create visual relationships, then make the final choice based on the bed, the plants and the effect you want.
