For a healthy indoor rubber plant (Ficus elastica), give it bright, filtered or indirect light, let its potting mix become fairly dry before watering again, and make sure excess water can drain away. Adjust watering to the plant’s conditions and the season rather than following a fixed weekly schedule.

What is a rubber plant?

Ficus elastica, commonly called the rubber plant or rubber tree, is a broadleaf evergreen ornamental grown indoors for its thick, glossy leaves. Despite the name, it is not a source of the commercial natural rubber used in products. The University of Florida IFAS Extension describes it as a species commonly grown in containers (UF/IFAS: Ficus elastica: Rubber Tree).

How much light does a rubber plant need?

Start with a bright spot that receives filtered or indirect light. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends bright filtered or indirect light for indoor plants (RHS: Ficus elastica).

The plant can tolerate a range of conditions: UF/IFAS describes it growing in sun or partial shade, while North Carolina State Extension says it does best in partial shade or low light (UF/IFAS; North Carolina State Extension). That tolerance does not mean every dim indoor corner will support equally strong growth. Use a brighter location as your starting point, and avoid assuming a plant in low light will grow as well as one receiving brighter filtered light.

When and how should you water it?

Check the potting mix before watering. UF/IFAS advises letting container soil become fairly dry between waterings. In practice, wait until the mix has dried considerably rather than watering simply because a certain number of days has passed.

Season affects how much water the plant uses. The RHS recommends moderate watering during the growing season and sparing watering in winter (RHS: Ficus elastica). Check the mix each time, since conditions in the room and container affect how quickly it dries.

After watering, let excess drain away and empty any water collected in the saucer. Clemson Cooperative Extension specifically advises removing excess saucer water; standing water and overwatering can contribute to leaf loss (Clemson Cooperative Extension: Rubber Plant).

What potting mix and container should you use?

Choose a growing medium that drains well. UF/IFAS recommends well-drained soil, and the RHS recommends houseplant compost. These sources do not establish a particular ingredient recipe or pot-size formula, so focus on drainage rather than a prescribed mix.

Use a container that allows excess water to escape, and pair it with a saucer only if you can empty the saucer after watering. A pot with drainage holes supports this approach; the saucer should catch runoff, not hold the plant in standing water.

Where should you place it to avoid cold stress?

Keep the plant away from cold drafts and sudden temperature drops, both of which North Carolina State Extension identifies as potential causes of leaf loss. That source says the plant does best above 55°F; treat this as its guidance, not as a universal biological cutoff or a guarantee that every warmer location is suitable (North Carolina State Extension: Rubber Plant).

Why is your rubber plant losing leaves?

Leaf loss can have several causes. The sources identify overwatering, cold drafts, and temperature drops as possible contributors. Check whether the potting mix is staying wet, whether water is left in the saucer, and whether the plant is exposed to a chilly draft or abrupt temperature change.

These are possible causes, not a complete diagnosis for every yellowing or falling leaf. UF/IFAS reports that no pests or diseases are of major concern for the species, though scale insects may occasionally occur. Inspect leaves and stems if you notice signs of pests rather than treating every leaf change as an infestation (UF/IFAS: Ficus elastica: Rubber Tree).

How can you propagate a rubber plant?

UF/IFAS lists cuttings and layering as propagation options. Air layering is a form of layering in which roots are encouraged to form on a stem while it remains attached to the parent plant, as Iowa State University Extension and Outreach explains (Iowa State University Extension and Outreach: How can I propagate a rubber tree?). These are ways to multiply a plant; the cited guidance does not establish one method as faster or more reliable.

  • EXQUISITE LEAF COLORATION: The Ficus Elastica 'Tineke' is renowned for its beautiful, glossy leaves that display an eye-catching blend. This striking variegation adds a sophisticated and vibrant touch to any indoor plants environment, making it a standout in live house decor.
  • SEASONAL FERTILIZATION NEEDS: The Ficus Elastica 'Tineke' should be fertilized every 4 weeks during the growing season (summer). In the winter, reduce feeding to every 12 weeks as the plant's growth slows down. This helps to ensure the plant receives the necessary nutrients throughout the year.
  • VERSATILE INDOOR PLANTS: Its combination of striking foliage, manageable care requirements, and adaptability to indoor conditions make the Ficus Elastica 'Tineke' an excellent choice for enhancing indoor spaces. It adds a touch of natural beauty and elegance, as a home decor, office decor, and room decor.
  • TEMPERATURE PREFERENCES: This plant prefers indoor temperatures ranging from 65°F to 75°F, which aligns well with typical home conditions. It is sensitive to sudden temperature changes and drafts, so it’s best placed in a stable environment.
  • SOIL MIX: Use a well-draining potting mix that combines potting soil, peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark. This blend ensures that the plant’s roots receive adequate aeration and prevents waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.

How do rubber plant varieties differ?

Some rubber plant cultivars have distinctive leaf markings. UF/IFAS describes these examples:

  • ‘Doescheri’: yellow-variegated leaves.
  • ‘Decora’: broad reddish-green leaves with ivory-colored veins.
  • ‘Variegata’: light-green leaves with white or yellow margins.

Knowing a plant’s variety can help distinguish characteristic leaf coloring from a change that may call for closer inspection.
