A router connects your home or small-office devices to a local network and, through your modem or internet gateway, to the internet. Before buying one, check whether your internet provider’s equipment already includes a router. To choose or secure the right setup, match it to your service, home layout, devices, and update support—not just a headline speed.
What a router does—and whether you need a separate one
A wireless router makes an internet connection available to devices over Wi-Fi and usually provides wired network connections as well. The modem or optical network terminal (ONT) connects to the provider’s network; a router directs traffic between that connection and devices in your home or office. Many providers supply a gateway that combines modem and router functions, so another router may be unnecessary or require a specific configuration.
Check your provider’s equipment and service requirements before purchasing. Confirm whether the supplied device is a modem, router, or combined gateway, and whether the provider permits or supports adding your own router. Consumer Reports’ Choosing a WiFi Router explains the basic role of wireless routers and the existence of combined modem-router equipment.
How to secure your home Wi-Fi network
Start with the router’s settings and keep its software maintained. The Federal Trade Commission’s How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network recommends using WPA3 Personal when the router and connected devices support it; WPA2 Personal is an option when needed. The FTC says, “WPA3 is the newer — and best — encryption available, but both will work to scramble your information.”

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Set distinct, unique credentials. Change the router’s default administrative username and password, and set a separate, strong password for the Wi-Fi network. The administrator credentials control settings; the Wi-Fi password lets devices join the network.
- Choose an available secure mode. Use WPA3 Personal if compatible. If older devices require it, WPA2 Personal may be necessary. Check the router’s manual for the exact setting name and avoid leaving the network open.
- Keep router software current. Install firmware updates according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If the equipment came from your internet provider, ask whether the provider manages updates and how they are delivered.
- Review convenience features. Consider disabling remote management, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) if you do not need them. Their availability and effects differ by model, so consult its documentation before changing settings.
NIST’s IR 8425A, Recommended Cybersecurity Requirements for Consumer-Grade Router Products, published September 10, 2024, describes cybersecurity outcomes and requirements for consumer-grade router products. It is a security-requirements reference, not a consumer model ranking.
For small-office network administrators
For organizations managing network infrastructure, consumer setup advice is not a substitute for an administrative security plan. CISA and partner agencies’ Enhanced Visibility and Hardening Guidance for Communications Infrastructure, published December 4, 2024, recommends limiting internet exposure of management interfaces, changing default passwords, tracking network configurations and firmware, verifying software images where possible, disabling unnecessary services, and monitoring device activity. The guidance states: “Hardening device and network architecture is a defense-in-depth strategy.”

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
How to choose a router for your service, layout, and devices
Compare routers against the conditions they will actually serve. A newer Wi-Fi generation or larger theoretical speed number does not by itself establish that a router will improve coverage or performance in a particular building.
- Confirm the internet-service and wired-port fit. Check compatibility with your provider’s modem, ONT, or gateway arrangement. Match the router’s WAN and LAN port speeds to your subscribed service and wired devices; a port can become a bottleneck if it is slower than the connection you intend to use.
- Match the design to the building. A standalone router may suit a compact layout, while a mesh system is one option to consider when coverage across rooms or floors is the problem. Whether mesh is necessary depends on the building and placement; product certification alone cannot predict coverage in your space.
- Check the devices you already own. Compare Wi-Fi generations and bands against the capabilities of your phones, computers, televisions, and other clients. A router feature benefits a device only when that device supports it.
- Check security and update support. Look for WPA3 capability if your devices can use it, WPA2 Personal support if older clients need it, and a clear firmware-update process. Do not assume that an app or advertised feature means security updates will continue indefinitely; check the manufacturer or provider for the exact model’s current support status.
- Separate certification from performance evidence. Certification can confirm tested interoperability features, but it is not a measurement of real-world speed, range, latency, or behavior under congestion. Seek independent measurements for those questions rather than relying on a certification record or theoretical maximum.
What Wi-Fi certification can—and cannot—tell you
Wi-Fi Alliance certificates provide a concrete way to check listed capabilities. For example, the TP-Link Deco BE85 certificate identifies a BE22000 whole-home mesh Wi-Fi 7 system and records certification on December 26, 2023. It lists 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz capabilities; Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7; WPA2-Personal; WPA3-Personal; and Protected Management Frames. The certificate says it lists features that completed Wi-Fi Alliance interoperability testing.

There is no single replacement interval established here. Consider replacement when the device no longer meets a practical need: for example, it lacks a feature required by your service or devices, cannot provide the coverage your layout needs, or no longer receives the updates needed to maintain security. First check whether the issue can be resolved by repositioning the router, updating its firmware, or adjusting its configuration. For an ISP-supplied gateway, ask the provider about replacement and update support before buying separate equipment.
