A router directs data between your home network and other networks, including the internet. A wireless router also provides Wi-Fi, and an ISP gateway may combine router, Wi-Fi, and modem or access-device functions in one box. Before buying equipment, check what your existing box already does.
What does a router do?
A router forwards network traffic between separate networks, using destination information and route knowledge to decide where data should go. In a home, it connects the local networkโyour phones, computers, and other devicesโto an upstream internet connection and helps devices share that connection. Routers and switches have different roles: a router moves traffic between networks, while a switch connects devices within a network. A typical consumer โwireless routerโ combines routing with a wireless access point that lets Wi-Fi devices join the local network. It may also have Ethernet ports for wired connections. The label describes the functions in the product, not necessarily a single universal device design. Cisco explains the combined router and access-point role.
What is the difference between a modem and a router?
An ISP modem or other access device connects your home to the providerโs service. A router manages traffic among your local devices and between your local network and that upstream connection. The functions are distinct even when they are not in separate boxes.

An ISP gateway commonly combines access, routing, and Wi-Fi functions. As a result, a box supplied by your provider may already be doing the work people associate with a separate router. Check its model documentation or settings before buying another device. NETGEARโs router explanation describes the router, modem, and gateway distinction.
Do you need a separate router if your ISP gave you a gateway?
Not necessarily. If the gateway already provides the wired and Wi-Fi connections your household needs, an additional router may be unnecessary. A separate router is an option when you have a particular needโsuch as different equipment or a coverage arrangementโbut the right setup depends on the gateway, ISP service, and home layout. Avoid connecting a second router without checking how the gateway is configured; the equipment manuals and ISP instructions determine which arrangements are supported.

How to set up a separate router
For a common setup in which an ISP gateway remains connected to the provider, Ethernet links the gateway to the separate router. Port labels and setup steps vary by model, so use the router manual and ISP instructions rather than assuming a particular local configuration address.
- Confirm the ISP connection works. Check that the gateway or access device is online before adding the router.
- Connect the equipment. Run an Ethernet cable from a LAN or Ethernet port on the ISP gateway to the separate routerโs WAN or Internet port.
- Power on the devices. Follow the router manufacturerโs prescribed order for powering up the gateway and router.
- Configure the router. Use its app or web dashboard as directed in the manual. Set a Wi-Fi network name, a strong Wi-Fi password, and the strongest security mode supported by the router and your devices.
- Check the result. Connect a device over Wi-Fi and, if useful, Ethernet; confirm it can reach the internet. If setup fails, check the cable and port labels, confirm the gateway connection, and consult the router manual or ISP support.

How to secure your home router
- Keep software updated. Install router firmware or software updates using the manufacturerโs instructions.
- Use strong, separate passwords. Set a strong administrator password for router settings and a strong Wi-Fi password for network access; do not treat them as interchangeable.
- Choose WPA3 when supported. Use WPA3 if both the router and the devices joining the network support it. If they do not, choose the strongest security option they share. Microsoftโs wireless-network guidance recommends WPA3 when available.
- Review convenience features. Consider whether you need remote management, WPS, or UPnP, and disable features you do not use if the routerโs instructions allow it. Their convenience can create security risks in some circumstances. The FTCโs home Wi-Fi guidance covers updates and these settings.
For a formal consumer-router security reference, NIST published IR 8425A on September 10, 2024. It is a cybersecurity profile, not a substitute for the instructions and update support for a particular router.

A single routerโs Wi-Fi may not reach every part of a home reliably. Mesh systems use multiple transmitters operating on one network to extend coverage, making them one possible solution when the layout or distance creates weak spots. They are not automatically an upgrade for every home: first identify where coverage is insufficient and consider whether the existing routerโs placement can address it. Cisco describes mesh as an option in its router setup guide.
