Construction began in early October 2026 on Route 11 south of Staunton, from Rolling Thunder Lane (Route 1049) through the Route 262 interchange to the city’s southern limits. Initially, drivers should expect weekday turn-lane closures at Orchard Hill Circle from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; VDOT says at least one lane in each direction will remain open.
Where Route 11 work is happening
The construction corridor runs from the intersection with Route 1049 (Rolling Thunder Lane), through the Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) interchange, to Staunton’s southern city limits at Greenville Avenue. VDOT describes the work as a Route 11 project in Augusta County. The project page also notes minor lane modifications between Rolling Thunder Lane and Frontier Drive.
What drivers should expect during construction
Initial weekday closures
During the initial construction period, VDOT expects turn-lane closures on Route 11 at Orchard Hill Circle from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Additional lane and shoulder closures may occur as work advances. At least one lane in each direction is expected to stay open at all times, so VDOT’s notice does not describe a full road closure. Work is weather permitting, and schedules may change.
Access for pedestrians and businesses
VDOT says pedestrian traffic on existing sidewalks and crossings will be maintained for accessibility during construction, and existing business entrances will remain open.

How Route 11 access will change
The existing center turn lane will be replaced by raised medians. Left turns will be permitted at designated median openings; drivers should not expect to turn left anywhere along the former continuous center-turn-lane section.
Most commercial driveways and side streets between Payne Lane and the northern intersection with Orchard Hill Circle will be restricted to right turns in and out. VDOT says limiting these access points is intended to reduce conflict points and crashes. That is the project’s stated rationale, not a reported or quantified crash-reduction result.

New pedestrian facilities and signal work
A sidewalk will be built on the east side of Route 11 from Frontier Drive to the existing sidewalk near the city limits at Greenville Avenue. The project also includes crosswalks, ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps and traffic-signal modifications.
Contract, schedule and project cost
VDOT says the construction contract was awarded in August 2026 to G. B. Foltz Contracting Inc. of Mount Jackson for $1,846,048. Construction began the following week, and completion is scheduled for spring 2027, subject to weather and schedule changes.

The $1,846,048 figure is the awarded construction contract, not the project’s broader cost estimate. VDOT’s project page lists a $3.7 million design-stage estimated total project cost, updated in August 2026, covering preliminary engineering, right-of-way and utility relocation, and construction.

VDOT reports an average of 12,127 vehicles per day on this Route 11 segment in 2022 and estimates 13,700 vehicles per day in the 2048 design year. Those figures provide traffic-planning context; they are not a forecast of daily construction-period traffic.

The work follows a Route 11 STARS study covering Rolling Thunder Lane to Commerce Avenue in Staunton, completed in 2018. Augusta County submitted recommendations for operational and safety improvements, which received funding in the 2020 SMART SCALE Round 4. VDOT describes the construction segment as part of that study.
