Most robot-vacuum problems come from a blocked brush or wheel, dirty sensors or charging contacts, a misplaced dock, a network problem, or a software fault. Start with the exact error message and your model number, then work from cleaning and power checks toward Wi-Fi resets, factory resets, repair, or warranty support.
Safety first: stop the cleaning cycle before inspection, remove the robot from its dock, unplug the dock when checking its cable or contacts, and keep water away from electronics, sensors, filters that are not washable, and charging contacts. Do not open a swollen, hot, leaking, or damaged lithium battery.
Quick symptom-to-fix guide
| Symptom | First checks |
|---|---|
| Will not turn on | Power switch, battery level, dock power, charging contacts |
| Starts and stops | Error message, brush roll, wheels, dustbin, filter, overheating |
| Will not charge | Outlet, dock alignment, contacts, temperature, battery condition |
| Will not return to dock | Dock position, obstacles, reflective objects, navigation |
| Weak suction | Full bin, clogged filter, blocked inlet, tangled brush, power setting |
| Leaves dirt behind | Brush and filter condition, floor type, worn parts |
| Gets stuck | Cords, rug fringe, thresholds, furniture clearance, wet floors |
| Spins or travels oddly | Drive wheels, sensors, floor surface, map or starting position |
| Misses rooms | Map, closed doors, no-go zones, dock movement, localization |
| Will not connect | Wi-Fi password, compatible band, app permissions, pairing state |
| Mop does not work | Tank, pad, nozzle, pump, approved cleaning solution |
| Makes a loud noise | Foreign object, brush bearing, wheel, fan, pump, damaged housing |
Robovac features, button combinations, mop systems, sensors, and error codes vary by model. A number such as “Error 6” is not a universal diagnosis. Match the exact message to the manufacturer’s manual or support page.
The safest 10-minute troubleshooting sequence
- Record the exact error. Photograph the app message or note the voice prompt, light pattern, and when the fault occurs.
- Stop and power down. Remove the robot from the dock before handling its underside.
- Empty the bin and inspect the filter. Do not wash a filter unless the manual says it is washable.
- Clear brushes and wheels. Remove hair, string, paper, pet toys, and other obstructions from both brush ends and wheel axles.
- Clean sensors and contacts. Use a dry, soft cloth on sensors and charging contacts.
- Check the dock. Confirm power, stable placement, clear approach space, and correct alignment.
- Reboot the robot. A normal power cycle can clear a temporary freeze without deleting maps or schedules.
- Check the app and firmware. Look for maintenance alerts, pending updates, changed Wi-Fi details, or map warnings.
- Reset Wi-Fi only for a connectivity problem. Do not use a network reset to solve a brush, wheel, or suction fault.
- Factory-reset only as a last software step. Preserve maps, room names, schedules, and no-go zones first.
Menu names and button combinations vary by model and software version. A forced restart or pinhole reset is not necessarily a factory reset. For example, eufy distinguishes soft, Wi-Fi, and factory resets, and its X8 Pro guidance describes a forced recovery that does not itself delete the map or reset the network. See eufy’s reset guidance and X8 Pro support information.

Robot vacuum will not turn on
Common causes include a fully discharged battery, a powerless dock, poor contact with the dock, an off power switch, battery protection after long storage, or a failed battery, charger, charging circuit, or mainboard.
- Test the wall outlet with another device.
- Check the dock indicator, if your model has one.
- Reseat the robot carefully on the dock.
- Clean the robot’s and dock’s charging contacts with a dry cloth.
- Leave the robot docked for the period specified in its manual.
- Try a normal restart and a short supervised run.
Do not assume a new battery will solve the problem. A failed dock, adapter, or charging circuit can produce the same symptom. Stop using the robot if the battery is swollen, hot, leaking, cracked, or physically damaged, and contact the manufacturer.
Robot starts, then stops
Read the error before clearing it. A jammed main brush, blocked side brush, trapped wheel, full bin, clogged filter, dirty cliff sensor, incorrectly fitted mop component, low battery, overheating, or firmware fault can all stop a run.
- Remove the main brush and clear hair and string from the center, ends, and sockets.
- Spin each drive wheel and the front caster by hand. Remove debris from the axle area.
- Empty the dustbin and inspect the air inlet and filter.
- Wipe underside sensors with a dry cloth.
- Test the robot on a clear, dry, matte floor.
- Run a short, supervised cleaning cycle.
If it stops at exactly the same place, inspect that location for a threshold, rug edge, furniture clearance problem, slippery area, or object. Dreame documentation also identifies hard objects caught in the brush or dustbox and wet or slippery floors as possible causes of abnormal operation.

- Turn the robot off.
- Remove the main brush and brush cover.
- Cut and pull away hair, thread, and string carefully.
- Clean both brush ends and their sockets.
- Check that the brush rotates freely by hand.
- Inspect the side brush and its mounting screw.
- Reinstall every component correctly and test the robot.
If the error returns immediately, the brush does not rotate freely, or the motor makes grinding or clicking sounds, the motor, bearing, axle, or brush housing may be damaged. Do not lubricate the brush unless the manufacturer specifically recommends it; household oil can attract dust and damage some materials.
Robot will not charge
Check the dock outlet, adapter, alignment, charging contacts, approach path, floor level, and temperature. A rug edge, furniture, trapped caster, or dirty contact can prevent a proper connection. The contacts should be clean and spring-loaded; do not sand them or apply conductive liquid.
- Unplug the dock before inspecting its cable or contacts.
- Clean both sets of contacts with a dry cloth.
- Confirm the dock is on a stable, level surface.
- Clear objects from the approach route.
- Place the robot directly on the dock and confirm a charging indication.
- Reboot and try another charging cycle.
Temperature can matter. iRobot advises allowing a Roomba exposed to freezing conditions to return to room temperature before charging; persistent charging errors should be referred to iRobot’s charging-error guidance. Error numbers remain model-specific.

Robot cannot find the dock
Separate a navigation problem from a charging problem. The robot may reach the station but fail to make contact, or it may be unable to locate the station at all.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Return the dock to its mapped location if it was moved.
- Clear the route and the space around the station.
- Remove or relocate highly reflective objects near the dock where practical.
- Start the robot from the dock rather than carrying it to another room.
- Avoid manually moving the robot during a run.
- If the app reports lost position, follow the model’s localization or remapping procedure.
For example, eufy’s X10 Pro Omni guidance identifies reflective objects near the station and loss of position as possible causes. This is not a universal diagnosis for every brand.
Weak suction or dirt left behind
First distinguish a maintenance problem from a performance limit. A robot may work normally yet collect less debris on deep carpet, heavy pet hair, stairs, upholstery, corners, or large particles than a full-size vacuum.
- Empty and correctly seat the dustbin.
- Clean or replace the filter according to the manual.
- Clear the air inlet.
- Remove hair from the main brush and side brush.
- Check whether the suction setting is too low.
- Replace visibly worn or deformed brushes with model-compatible parts.
- Use higher suction only when the extra noise and shorter runtime are acceptable.
If the filter, brush, and inlet are clear but pickup remains poor, the fan, seal, bin, or cleaning head may be worn. Do not buy a new filter or brush until the part is actually implicated.
Robot gets stuck
Common traps include charging cables, curtain edges, rug fringe, chair legs, narrow gaps, thresholds, dark or reflective flooring, wet areas, and low furniture that catches a LiDAR turret.
Recommended Free Tools
- Remove loose cables and small objects.
- Secure rug fringe.
- Raise or block furniture with insufficient clearance.
- Keep wet floors out of the robot’s path.
- Use a physical barrier or no-go zone for persistent problem areas.
- Test whether a threshold is too high for the robot.
“Stuck” can mean physically trapped or unable to localize itself. Freeing a wheel will not repair a bad map, and remapping will not repair a seized wheel.
Robot spins or travels oddly
Inspect both drive wheels for hair and debris, then clean the underside sensors. Test the robot on a clear, dry, matte floor. Wet or slippery flooring, a trapped wheel, a lifted or manually moved robot, reflective surfaces, map corruption, and navigation-sensor faults can all produce strange movement.

- Check both drive wheels independently.
- Clean cliff and navigation sensors.
- Reboot the robot.
- Start a short run from the dock.
- Update firmware if an official update is available and power is stable.
- Remap only after preserving settings and ruling out hardware problems.
Dark, glossy, or mirrored surfaces can confuse some cliff or navigation systems, but this is sensor- and model-dependent. Test on a light, matte surface before concluding that the robot is defective.
Bad maps, missed rooms, and skipped areas
Possible causes include closed doors during mapping, a moved dock, changed furniture, no-go zones, low battery, an unsaved map, loss of position, or an obstructed navigation sensor.
- Keep the dock in its final location.
- Open intended doors during the first mapping run.
- Remove temporary clutter.
- Start mapping from the dock.
- Do not carry the robot during the run.
- Wait for the app to confirm that the map is saved.
- Check room labels and no-go zones before deleting anything.
Many models allow map deletion or remapping from the app without a full factory reset. Multiple-floor behavior differs significantly by model, so use the exact model’s map feature rather than assuming every robot supports multiple saved maps.
Wi-Fi, app, and offline problems
A robot that is offline may still clean normally. Test a physical button: if the robot responds and cleans, the core hardware may be fine; if it is also unresponsive, investigate power, charging, or hardware first.
Check these items
- The robot is powered and docked.
- The correct app is installed and updated.
- The app has required Bluetooth, local-network, location, or nearby-device permissions.
- The Wi-Fi password is correct.
- The router is within range.
- The network band is compatible with the model.
- The phone remains on the intended home network during setup.
- A VPN, guest-network isolation, or enterprise security setting is not blocking pairing.
Many models use 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi during setup, but this is not universal. Router band steering, model requirements, region, phone, and app version all matter. ECOVACS’s U.S. network guidance, for example, covers 2.4-GHz compatibility, same-network setup, mobile-data considerations, and temporarily connecting to an ECOVACS_xxxx network.
Recovery order
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Reboot the robot and router.
- Confirm the network name and password.
- Reset the robot’s Wi-Fi connection.
- Pair it again using the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Factory-reset only if the manufacturer recommends it.
If only scheduled cleaning fails, check schedules, time zone, do-not-disturb settings, map selection, and whether the robot was left off the dock.
Mop and water problems
Check that the tank is installed correctly, the pad is fitted and recognized, the nozzle is not blocked, and the selected mode supports mopping. Use only liquids approved for that model. Some manufacturers allow a branded solution; others prohibit additives entirely.

Do not add vinegar, detergent, essential oils, disinfectant, or household floor cleaner unless the manual explicitly approves it. eufy warns that an unapproved cleaning solution can damage the pump; see its X10 Pro Omni guidance.
For streaks or puddles, check the water setting, saturated pad, tank seal, dock wash tray, and repeated passes over one area. Stop using the mop function if water reaches electronics, the tank leaks while stationary, the dock overflows, the pump runs continuously, or there is a burning smell.
Loud noise, burning smell, or unusual heat
Possible sources include a brush obstruction, damaged wheel, fan, suction motor, pump, or foreign object in the air path. A burning smell, smoke, swelling, sparking, or extreme heat is an immediate stop-use condition—not a clean-and-retry problem.
Unplug the dock, move the robot away from combustible materials if it is safe to do so, and contact the manufacturer. Do not open the battery, charger, laser module, pump, or mainboard as a DIY repair.
How to use error codes correctly
Always match an error to the brand, model, region, and current software. iRobot has dedicated support for Charging Errors 6 and 7 across Roomba and Braava models, while eufy publishes model-specific voice-alert tables. Use the official support page rather than a universal code list:
- iRobot charging support
- Roborock model-specific support
- ECOVACS network errors
- eufy troubleshooting
- Dreame troubleshooting documentation
- Shark manuals and troubleshooting
When to repair, claim warranty, or replace the robot
Owner maintenance is reasonable when
- The alert concerns a brush, wheel, bin, filter, sensor, or contact.
- There is no visible damage.
- The part is designed to be user-replaceable.
- The robot works normally after cleaning.
Contact support when
- The same error returns after the documented fix.
- The robot cannot charge after dock and contact checks.
- A motor, sensor, pump, battery, or mainboard appears faulty.
- The robot is under warranty.
- The issue began after a firmware update.
- Water or impact damage occurred.
- The robot repeatedly loses maps or localization.
Use the exact model selector and support process. Roborock’s U.S. support portal provides model-specific assistance and contact options; iRobot and eufy also provide official support portals.
Replace a part when
Choose a compatible official or reputable part when the manual identifies it as a consumable or the component is visibly worn, warped, cracked, or broken. A battery may be appropriate for very short runtimes only after the dock, contacts, and charging circuit have been checked. A new brush will not fix a failed brush motor, and a new battery will not fix a defective dock.

Replacement becomes more sensible when repair costs approach a suitable replacement, several major components have failed, official parts are unavailable, the app or cloud service no longer supports the model, or safety-critical damage is present. There is no universal percentage rule: age, warranty, local labor, part availability, and the robot’s value all matter.
