Short answer: no—not every Roomba, and not in every category. The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is better than many older and midrange Roomba models as an all-in-one vacuum-and-mop system. Its strongest advantages are hot-water mop washing, warm-air drying, automatic detergent dispensing, LiDAR mapping, extending edge-cleaning hardware, and a highly automated dock.
But “Roomba” is a product family, not one machine. iRobot’s current U.S. range includes inexpensive vacuum-only robots, combination vacuum/mops, and premium Max and Plus models with LiDAR, AI obstacle avoidance, automatic emptying, and—on some models—automatic mop washing. The fair question is which exact Roomba you are considering.

| Best for | Not best for |
|---|---|
| Homes with mixed hard floors and carpet; pet owners; buyers who want automated mopping and dock maintenance; people who value LiDAR mapping and close edge cleaning. | Vacuum-only households, small homes without room for a large dock, privacy-sensitive buyers, and anyone expecting zero maintenance or perfect stain removal. |
The S8 MaxV Ultra is a compelling premium robot when it is available at a substantial discount and includes a clear warranty and return policy. A U.S. Roborock listing viewed in August 2026 showed $799.99 against a former $1,799.99 price, but also displayed out-of-stock/coming-soon language. Treat that as a dated price signal, not a guaranteed live offer. Check the current Roborock listing before buying.

My recommendation: choose the S8 MaxV Ultra if your priority is the most comprehensive vacuum-and-mop automation at the verified current price. Choose a specific current Roomba if its price, warranty, support, ecosystem, navigation system, or roller-mop design better matches your home.

What the S8 MaxV Ultra is
The S8 MaxV Ultra is a premium robot vacuum and mop sold with Roborock’s 8-in-1 RockDock Ultra. The robot combines a DuoRoller Riser dual main brush, advertised maximum suction of 10,000 Pa, VibraRise 3.0 sonic mopping, PreciSense LiDAR navigation, and camera- and structured-light-based obstacle recognition.
Its headline features include:
- DuoRoller Riser dual rubber main brush system.
- VibraRise 3.0 sonic mopping, which Roborock says vibrates at up to 4,000 times per minute.
- A mop that can lift by up to 20 mm when crossing carpet, according to Roborock.
- FlexiArm extending side-brush hardware and an Extra Edge Mopping System.
- Reactive AI 2.0 obstacle recognition using 3D structured light and an RGB camera.
- Intelligent Dirt Detection and DirTect adaptive cleaning features.
- Automatic dust emptying and onboard water refilling.
- Hot-water mop washing, warm-air mop drying, and automatic detergent dispensing.
- The built-in “Hello Rocky” voice assistant, video calling, pet snaps, and pet-search features.
These are not equally important. The dock, mop washing, drying, water refilling, mapping, brush design, and edge-cleaning hardware affect regular cleaning. Video calling and pet snaps are optional conveniences; they do not by themselves make floors cleaner. Roborock’s feature descriptions are available in its official S8 MaxV Ultra support guide.
Is its mopping better than a Roomba’s?
Against a vacuum-only Roomba, unquestionably—but that is not a meaningful apples-to-apples comparison. Against a current Roomba Combo, the answer depends on the model, floor type, cleaning solution, and condition of the mess.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The S8 MaxV Ultra uses a high-speed vibrating mop rather than simply dragging a damp cloth behind the robot. Its mop can lift when it detects carpet, and its extending edge mop is designed to reach closer to walls and corners. After cleaning, the dock washes the mop with heated water—Roborock specifies approximately 60°C/140°F in its comparison material—then dries it with warm air. The dock can also dispense detergent automatically. Roborock’s model comparison gives the regional qualification for these features.
That combination is valuable for routine hard-floor maintenance. The robot can vacuum, mop, return to the dock, wash the pad, refill itself, and continue without requiring you to handle a dirty mop after every run.
It does not guarantee superior stain removal. Dried food, grease, grout, textured tile, and heavily soiled areas may still need pretreatment or manual scrubbing. A robot mop is best viewed as a maintenance cleaner, not a replacement for occasional deep cleaning.
Current iRobot Combo machines use different approaches. Some premium Roomba models have AutoWash docks and newer mopping systems, including the PowerSpin Roller Mop on the Roomba Max 705 Combo. Therefore, compare the S8 MaxV Ultra with the exact Roomba model—not with the word “Roomba.” See iRobot’s current Combo lineup.
Vacuuming on hard floors, carpet, and around pets
The S8 MaxV Ultra is designed as a serious vacuum as well as a mop. Its dual-roller arrangement can help agitate carpet and collect larger debris, while its side brush and extending hardware are intended to improve wall and edge coverage.
Hard floors
On hard floors, the key questions are fine dust pickup, large debris handling, and whether the side brush scatters cereal, kibble, or litter. The advertised 10,000 Pa suction figure is a specification, not a standardized cleaning result. Suction numbers from different manufacturers should not be treated as a league table.

Carpets and pet hair
The dual rollers and carpet-focused cleaning modes make the S8 MaxV Ultra a strong candidate for homes with low-pile carpet and shedding pets. Independent testing is more useful here than the headline specification; RTINGS’ review identifies it as a high-end combination robot with dual rollers, LiDAR, camera recognition, extending cleaning hardware, and an automated dock.
Roborock advertises a 99.5% hair-pickup rate through its Carpet Boost+ system. That is a manufacturer internal-test claim, not a universal independently verified result. Real performance will vary with hair length, carpet pile, room layout, brush condition, and cleaning settings.

- Embedded hair on low-pile carpet.
- Large kibble and litter on hard floors.
- Long human hair wrapped around rollers and side brushes.
- High-pile, shag, and fringed rugs.
- Whether the mop lifts cleanly at rug edges.
- Whether the robot scatters debris with its side brush.
- Noise and battery endurance at maximum suction.
The robot is designed to recognize hazards such as pet waste, but no machine reliably identifies every accident. Remove fresh pet waste before running it; a failed detection can turn a localized problem into a dock, brush, and floor-cleaning problem.
Edges, corners, rugs, and furniture
The FlexiArm side brush and extending mop address a common robot-vacuum weakness: the strip of floor left beside walls and cabinets. They should improve reach, but “improved edge cleaning” is not the same as perfect corner cleaning. A round robot still cannot physically reach every tight 90-degree corner.
Carpet behavior deserves particular attention. Before purchase, consider thick rugs, dark carpets, fringe, delicate materials, and rug edges. Confirm whether your preferred settings make the robot avoid rugs, lift the mop high enough, or leave moisture behind. Mop lift performance varies with the rug and floor transition; the advertised 20 mm is a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee for every carpet.
LiDAR and cameras can improve navigation under furniture, but they do not make the robot shorter. Measure the S8 MaxV Ultra’s physical height against the clearance under sofas, beds, and cabinets. A robot that cannot fit underneath cannot clean there, regardless of its mapping system.

Obstacle avoidance: S8 MaxV Ultra versus Roomba
The S8 MaxV Ultra combines LiDAR mapping with 3D structured light and an RGB camera. Roborock promotes recognition of objects including shoes, pet waste, and floor mirrors. This combination can produce detailed maps and help the robot navigate around ordinary clutter.
However, newer Roombas are not defenseless competitors. The Roomba j7 advertises recognition of hazards including pet waste and cords, with the ability to send the owner an image of an encountered object. The Roomba Max 705 Vac combines PrecisionVision AI with ClearView Pro LiDAR. Those are meaningful current-generation alternatives, not merely older Roomba navigation systems. iRobot’s j7 page and the Max 705 Vac page describe their respective systems.
No obstacle-avoidance system is perfect with thin black cables, transparent objects, socks, small toys, dark objects, or clutter that changes between runs. Moving the dock or substantially rearranging furniture can also affect map reliability. Roborock’s support material warns against moving the dock during cleaning; place it on a level, stable floor and leave it there.

Camera privacy
The RGB camera enables some obstacle-recognition, video-call, and pet-viewing features. That may be useful, but it is also a legitimate privacy consideration. Buyers who do not want a camera-equipped robot should compare the exact sensor hardware of the alternative model and verify the current app controls for disabling remote-viewing features. Do not assume that every camera feature is active by default—or that every privacy question is answered by turning off video calling.
What the RockDock Ultra automates
The dock is the main reason to buy this model over a basic robot. It can empty the dustbin, refill the robot’s water supply, wash the mop with heated water, dry the mop with warm air, dispense detergent, and clean the dock’s washing area. That significantly reduces daily handling.
“Self-cleaning” does not mean maintenance-free. The owner still needs to:
- Fill the clean-water tank.
- Empty the dirty-water tank.
- Replace the dust bag.
- Replenish detergent.
- Clean filters, sensors, brushes, wheels, and contacts.
- Remove hair and debris from the robot and dock.
- Inspect the dock tray and washing area for buildup.
- Investigate clogs, leaks, dirty contacts, odor, and drying failures.
A large dock also creates practical installation requirements. You need a level floor, a nearby outlet, sufficient clearance, and easy access to the tanks and dust bag. Do not hide it where filling and emptying containers becomes an unpleasant chore. Regional versions may differ, particularly where plumbing or water-drainage kits are involved.
Connectivity and setup limitations
The U.S. product listing states that the S8 MaxV Ultra supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, rather than 5 GHz. Verify the precise regional model and current manual before purchase. Routers that combine both bands under one network name can sometimes complicate setup; a temporary 2.4 GHz network or separate band name may be necessary.
Keep the dock in its chosen position during mapping and cleaning. If furniture moves, maps may need adjustment. Dirty sensors can cause navigation errors, while poorly seated water tanks or blocked drainage paths can produce dock warnings, leaks, or incomplete mop washing.
Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra versus current Roomba models
Prices below are volatile snapshots seen on official U.S. pages on August 16–18, 2026. Recheck the live price, stock, warranty, and return terms before buying.
| Buyer need | Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra | Specific Roomba direction |
|---|---|---|
| Vacuum-only cleaning | Overqualified and expensive if mopping is irrelevant. | Roomba Max 715 Vac was listed around $699.99; Max 705 Vac or a lower-cost model may be more sensible. |
| Automated vacuum and mopping | Hot-water mop washing, warm-air drying, auto detergent, water refilling, and dust emptying. | Compare with Roomba Max 705/707 and Plus 405/505 Combo models with AutoWash features. |
| Pet waste and cord avoidance | LiDAR plus camera and structured-light recognition. | Roomba j7 and Max 705 also advertise AI obstacle avoidance; neither system is infallible. |
| Carpet and pet hair | Dual rollers and strong high-end test credentials; manufacturer claims need qualification. | Check the exact Roomba’s brush design and independent carpet results. |
| Lowest price | Usually excessive for a budget buyer. | Roomba 105 Vac plus AutoEmpty was seen around $279.99; 105 Combo around $299.99; 205 DustCompactor Combo around $469.99. |
| Premium hands-off cleaning | One of its clearest strengths, provided the dock fits and is maintained. | Premium Roomba Combo models also offer automated washing docks. |
| Privacy | Camera-enabled features may be a drawback. | Check the exact sensor and camera hardware of the selected Roomba. |
| Ecosystem and support | Roborock app, accessories, and support network. | Existing iRobot owners may prefer iRobot OS, established accessories, warranty, or service. |
iRobot’s U.S. catalog listed models from roughly $200 to $1,400, including the Roomba Max 705 Combo, Plus 505 Combo, and Combo 10 Max. Those products are not interchangeable: a $300 vacuum or basic combo cannot be judged against the S8 MaxV Ultra’s dock and mopping system simply because both carry the Roomba name. Consult the iRobot product catalog and Roomba lineup for the exact configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should buy the S8 MaxV Ultra?
- You have substantial hard flooring and want scheduled vacuuming and mopping.
- Hot-water mop washing and heated drying matter more than having the smallest dock.
- You want automatic detergent dispensing and water refilling.
- Edge cleaning, LiDAR mapping, and mixed-floor routines are important.
- You have pets and value strong carpet-maintenance potential.
- You accept a large dock, consumables, tank handling, and camera-enabled hardware.
- The verified price is meaningfully below the former $1,799.99 list price and the seller provides a clear warranty and return policy.
Who should choose a Roomba instead?
- You only need vacuuming. A current vacuum-only Roomba may cost less and involve fewer water-related maintenance tasks.
- You already use iRobot products and prefer its app, ecosystem, support, or accessories.
- A current Roomba Combo’s roller-mop approach better suits your floors and cleaning habits.
- The chosen Roomba is substantially cheaper or more readily available with better local warranty service.
- You prefer a newer current-generation product rather than an older flagship sold at a high price.
- You want to avoid camera-enabled features after checking the exact hardware configuration.
Neither product is a good fit if you expect zero maintenance, have a home covered in loose cords and toys, rely on very thick or fringed rugs, cannot accommodate a large dock, or need medical-grade sanitation and complete removal of embedded stains.

Is it worth buying in 2026?
The price changes the answer. At or near $800, a new, warrantied S8 MaxV Ultra can be an attractive premium vacuum-and-mop purchase because it delivers unusually comprehensive dock automation. Near its former $1,799.99 list price, the value case is much harder: newer robots may offer improvements in obstacle avoidance, anti-tangle design, dock serviceability, software, or overall value.
If the official page says out of stock or coming soon, do not treat the discount as a guaranteed buying opportunity. Check authorized retailers, confirm the exact regional model, and verify warranty coverage, return deadlines, consumable availability, and whether the product is new rather than refurbished.
Alternatives worth considering
For vacuum-only cleaning
Compare the S8 MaxV Ultra with the Roomba Max 715 Vac or Max 705 Vac if mopping is unnecessary. The Max 705 Vac advertises dual rubber brushes, AutoEmpty, PrecisionVision AI, and ClearView Pro LiDAR. You may get a more sensible purchase by skipping the water system entirely.
For an iRobot vacuum/mop
Look at the Roomba Plus 405/505 Combo or Max 705/707 Combo, depending on availability and price. They are the relevant iRobot alternatives for buyers who want a current AutoWash-style ecosystem rather than a basic Roomba with a separate damp pad.

A less expensive Roborock Qrevo model may provide much of the appeal of an automated vacuum-and-mop dock for less money, though the exact brush, navigation, mopping, edge-cleaning, and obstacle-avoidance hardware must be checked model by model.
For maximum control
A conventional cordless vacuum paired with a manual mop remains the better choice for buyers who dislike app dependence, want to inspect every surface, or need precise treatment of stains and delicate flooring.
Final verdict
The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is better than many Roombas in the areas that matter most to premium vacuum-and-mop buyers: dock automation, mop washing and drying, detergent handling, LiDAR mapping, edge reach, and mixed-floor convenience. It is not better than every current Roomba in every way. A Roomba Max or Plus model may be cheaper, newer, better supported for your location, or preferable if you want iRobot’s ecosystem or a particular mopping design.
Buy the S8 MaxV Ultra when the verified price is strong, the dock fits your home, you accept camera and maintenance trade-offs, and you genuinely want its advanced mopping system. Otherwise, compare it with one named Roomba model—or skip both and buy the simpler cleaner that matches your floors.
