Q8 Max and Q8 Max+: the difference that matters
The Q8 Max and Q8 Max+ use the same basic robot platform. The โPlusโ designation adds the RockDock Plus self-emptying dock; it does not add powered mopping, mop washing or mop drying.

There is an official capacity discrepancy: Roborockโs technical sheet lists a 470 ml robot dustbin, while the U.S. sales page advertises a 770 ml large dustbin. Check the exact regional edition rather than treating either figure as universal (technical specification sheet; U.S. listing).
Setup, size and connectivity
The 96.5 mm robot height is important under beds, sofas and cabinets; measure the lowest obstruction. Roborock lists up to 2 cm of threshold climbing, but sharp lips, slippery surfaces and approach angles can defeat a nominally compliant threshold.

Vacuuming performance
Hard floors
The DuoRollerโs two rubber rollers and advertised 5,500 Pa maximum suction make the Q8 Max a capable everyday cleaner for tile, vinyl, sealed wood and other approved hard surfaces. Modern Castle measured 98.2% debris removal by weight across its test surfaces, but that is one laboratory method, not a guarantee for every floor plan or debris mix (Modern Castle testing).
Carpet
It handles routine surface debris on low- and medium-pile carpet, especially with carpet boost enabled, but it is not automatically a deep-carpet specialist. Results depend on pile height, debris, number of passes, firmware and cleaning mode. Vacuum Wars found the S8+ stronger overall for carpet performance and obstacle avoidance in its comparison (Vacuum Wars comparison).

Pet hair, long hair and edges
The dual rollers are a useful choice for shedding pets and reduce tangling compared with simpler brush designs. โReduced tanglingโ is not maintenance-free: inspect roller ends, wheels, side brush and the suction inlet regularly, particularly with long human hair.
Mopping: maintenance, not floor washing
The Q8 Max can vacuum and damp-wipe simultaneously. Its removable cloth mount has adjustable water flowโRoborock advertises 30 levelsโbut the pad is passive and non-vibrating. It does not scrub with powered agitation, lift automatically over carpet, or wash and dry itself.
What it does well
- Fine dust film on tile, vinyl, sealed hardwood and laminate approved for damp cleaning.
- Light footprints and routine kitchen or entryway maintenance.
- Convenient vacuum-and-wipe runs when you are prepared to wash the cloth afterward.
What it cannot replace
- Manual removal of dried food, grease, sticky residue or dried mud.
- Powered spinning or vibrating mop systems.
- A dock that cleans and dries the mop.
Wash and dry the cloth after each mopping session. A dirty pad can spread grime and leave streaks. Never wet-clean flooring that its manufacturer says must remain dry.

Carpets and rugs
There is no automatic mop lift. Create no-mop zones, use room-specific routines, or remove the mop mount for vacuum-only runs. Do not assume the robot will identify every rug correctly.

Navigation and obstacle avoidance
PreciSense LiDAR produces systematic maps, room divisions and predictable routes. Reactive Tech obstacle avoidance is a meaningful improvement over random-navigation budget robots, and the app supports no-go zones, no-mop zones, room and zone cleaning, schedules and multi-floor maps (Roborock product specifications).
Obstacle avoidance is not object-proofing. Thin cables, shoelaces, ribbons, socks, small toys and very low objects can still tangle or trap the robot. A quick floor pickup remains the safest routine; user reports document cable and small-object limitations (user reports).

The Roborock app
After the first mapping run, you can label or split rooms, clean selected rooms or drawn zones, set schedules, define no-go and no-mop areas, and adjust suction and water flow by room or routine. Voice-assistant support and multi-floor maps add convenience. Labels and menu paths can change with app version and region, so verify the current interface during setup rather than relying on a fixed menu name.
Maintenance and ownership
After every mopping run
- Remove, rinse and dry the mop cloth.
- Inspect the water tank and do not leave a wet cloth attached for extended storage.
Regularly
- Empty the standard Q8 Max dustbin and clean its filter.
- Remove hair from both main rollers, their end caps, the side brush and wheels.
- Wipe cliff sensors, front sensors and charging contacts.
- Keep the dock on a hard, level surface with a clear approach.
Q8 Max+ specific work
The Plus dock reduces dustbin trips. Replace its disposable bag when full, but continue washing the mop cloth and maintaining the robot; self-emptying does not make the system hands-off (user manual).

- Good candidates: tile, vinyl, sealed hardwood, damp-rated laminate, and low- or medium-pile carpet for vacuuming.
- Use caution: unsealed wood, water-sensitive laminate, thick or shag rugs, loose mats and dark surfaces that may affect sensors.
- Thresholds: the 2 cm specification is a guideline, not a guarantee for every transition.

Which model should you buy?
Buy the Q8 Max when
- Vacuuming matters more than mopping.
- You want LiDAR mapping, room control and DuoRoller pickup.
- You have mostly hard floors, some low- or medium-pile carpet and a reasonably tidy floor.
- You are comfortable emptying the bin and washing the mop.
- The sale price is materially below newer self-emptying or mop-lifting robots.
Choose the Q8 Max+ when
- You have pets or a larger home and dislike frequent bin emptying.
- The Plus premium is modest.
- You want the same vacuum and navigation platform with a 2.5 L dock bag.
Do not buy the Q8 Max+ specifically for better mopping: its dock does not wash or dry the passive pad.
Spend more or choose another model when
- You need automatic mop lifting over rugs, mop washing and drying, or powered scrubbing; a newer Qrevo-class model is the more appropriate category.
- Deep carpet cleaning and stronger obstacle avoidance outweigh price; the S8+ is the stronger comparison choice in Vacuum Warsโ testing.
- You want a vacuum-first bargain and do not need the Q8 Maxโs obstacle avoidance or mop; Q5 Pro+/Q5 Max+ models may offer better value where currently available.
- Your home is routinely covered with cables, clothing, toys or pet messes.
- Your router cannot provide 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
