Ring’s AI Unusual Event Alert Flags Activity That Differs From Your Normal Routine

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ring’s new Unusual Event Alert is not a crime detector. Announced on January 6, 2026, the beta feature learns recent activity patterns for an individual camera and flags motion events that appear unusual for that location. It can reduce repetitive notifications, but it may delay alerts, misinterpret changing routines, and cannot determine whether someone is dangerous or committing a crime.

The feature requires Ring’s Video Descriptions and a compatible paid subscription. Availability also depends on the device, language, region, and account.

What Ring’s AI upgrade actually does

Ring calls the feature Unusual Event Alert. Rather than looking for a fixed list of crimes or “suspicious” behaviors, it compares a new motion event with what that camera has recently seen.

For example, an animal appearing in a yard where animals are rarely seen could be marked unusual. A recurring delivery at the same time each day may eventually be treated as normal. The label means unusual relative to the camera’s recent activity—not dangerous, illegal, or malicious.

How the features fit together

These related tools do different jobs:

Feature Purpose
Video Descriptions Generates an AI-written description of activity in a motion event and in Event History.
Unusual Event Alert Compares a new event with recent patterns for that camera and flags deviations.
Single Event Alert Groups similar motion events into one notification to reduce repetition.
Active Warnings Can issue spoken, context-aware warnings to detected visitors. This is separate from Unusual Event Alert.
Video Search Helps search recorded footage using supported descriptions or criteria.

The basic flow is:

Motion event → Video Description → comparison with recent activity → normal events may be grouped or filtered; unusual events may receive an alert.

Ring says Unusual Event Alert can take time to learn what is normal. During that learning period, normal notifications continue. Once active, an unusual event may receive a special tag in Event History, where you can inspect the timeline and underlying video.

It does not recognize criminals or predict crime

Ring’s public documentation does not establish that Unusual Event Alert can identify a burglar, determine intent, recognize a weapon, or predict a crime. It identifies pattern deviation.

  • Powerful protection for any property* — 1080p HD security camera for your home or business with motion-activated LED floodlights, 105dB security siren.
  • Real-time alerts* — Get motion-activated notification when anyone steps in view of your camera.
  • Customizable Motion Zones* — Fine-tune which areas you want to focus on in the Ring app.
  • Light up large outdoor areas* — 2000 lumen motion-activated floodlights give unwanted visitors nowhere to hide.
  • Sound the siren with a tap* — Activate the 85dB siren from the Ring app to send unwanted visitors running.
  • A harmless change—a visiting pet, new neighbor, holiday decoration, or altered delivery schedule—may look unusual.
  • A dangerous event may look normal if it resembles activity the camera has seen before.
  • No unusual-event alert does not prove that nothing dangerous happened. It may mean the event was not detected, processed, or considered sufficiently different from the baseline.
  • AI-generated descriptions can be incomplete or wrong. Treat them as summaries, not eyewitness testimony.

Ring does not publish an accuracy rate for this feature in the cited support material. Review the video yourself before acting on an alert.

How to turn Unusual Event Alert on

  1. Open the Ring app and go to the main dashboard.
  2. Tap the menu icon, ☰.
  3. Select Pro Features. Some accounts may still show AI Features while the app redesign rolls out.
  4. Read and accept the feature terms if prompted.
  5. Turn on Video Descriptions first.
  6. Enable Unusual Event Alert.
  7. Open Manage Devices if you want to enable it only for selected cameras or doorbells.

After activation, Ring may show that the camera is learning. Notifications can continue normally during this period. Ring also warns that checking for similar events may introduce a brief notification delay.

How to disable it

Use Ring app → Menu → Pro Features → Unusual Event Alert, then switch it off. You can also use Manage Devices to disable it for individual cameras.

What you need: subscription, device, and location limits

Ring says Video Descriptions, Single Event Alert, and Unusual Event Alert require a compatible Ring subscription. Ring’s U.S. plans page listed the following prices on August 18, 2026:

Plan Listed price General scope
Ring Protect Solo $4.99/month or $49.99/year One doorbell or camera
Ring Protect Multi $9.99/month or $99.99/year Multiple devices at one location
Ring Protect Pro $19.99/month or $199.99/year Broader intelligent features and professional monitoring
Virtual Security Guard $99/month Live video monitoring and real-time deterrence

Plan names and feature matrices changed during 2026. Check the current Ring plan comparison before subscribing. Do not assume that every paid plan includes every AI feature on every device.

Ring’s support documentation also identifies important restrictions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The mobile device’s primary language must be English for the documented availability.
  • The features are not available for Ring devices in Illinois because of state legislation.
  • They are not compatible with Ring Edge, Ring Alarm, Ring Alarm Pro non-motion footage, or Ring Car Cam.
  • Additional device and event limitations may apply.

If the option is missing, update the Ring app, check both Pro Features and AI Features, verify the subscription, confirm the camera is eligible, check language and regional availability, and make sure Video Descriptions is enabled for that device. If it still does not appear, contact Ring support rather than replacing a working doorbell.

Why the feature may get things wrong

A pattern-learning system works best when a camera watches a stable environment. Results may be less predictable when:

  • The camera has little historical activity from which to form a baseline.
  • You move into a new home, change schedules, add pets, or begin remodeling.
  • Seasonal leaves, snow, lighting, decorations, wildlife, or construction change the scene.
  • The doorbell faces a busy sidewalk, shared driveway, or public street.
  • Rain, glare, insects, poor lighting, motion blur, or a narrow camera view obscure context.

These are practical limitations of anomaly detection, not a published Ring accuracy test. Ring specifically warns that beta results may vary, that event volume and device limitations can affect the feature, and that alerts may be briefly delayed.

That delay matters. Unusual Event Alert is a notification-prioritization tool, not a substitute for a monitored alarm, smoke detector, emergency service, or direct observation.

Privacy questions to consider

Ring describes Video Descriptions as using a vision-language model and real-time guardrails. The available documentation does not fully explain the complete processing path, retention period, model-provider arrangements, or whether every stage occurs locally on the doorbell or in the cloud.

One point Ring does document is that a Video Description is shared along with the video when a user shares an event. Before enabling the feature, consider:

  • What video or metadata is processed?
  • How long are generated descriptions retained?
  • Does enabling the feature change existing privacy or encryption settings?
  • How does it interact with end-to-end encryption?
  • Can it be disabled for individual cameras?
  • What happens when household members share access?

Do not treat the AI label as proof that a human reviewed the footage. The cited Ring material does not establish that every description is reviewed by people.

Should you enable it?

Enable it if… Leave it off if…
You receive many repetitive motion alerts. You need the fastest possible notification for every event.
Your camera watches a relatively stable private area. Your camera faces a busy sidewalk, street, or shared driveway.
You already have an eligible subscription. You do not want an additional subscription or cloud-based AI processing.
You will review the video instead of trusting the label. You expect a reliable burglar, weapon, or threat detector.

The central trade-off is fewer notifications versus completeness and immediacy. Filtering can make important events easier to notice, but it can also delay an alert, overreact to a harmless change, or fail to highlight a familiar-looking harmful event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do you need a new Ring doorbell?

Probably not solely for this feature. Unusual Event Alert is primarily subscription- and software-dependent. First check whether your existing camera appears under Pro Features → Manage Devices and whether your plan includes the required intelligent features.

Consider new hardware only if your current model is unsupported, cannot produce the required motion footage, or no longer meets your coverage needs. A camera pointed at a stable private entrance is a better candidate than one aimed at constantly changing public activity.

The bottom line

Ring’s Unusual Event Alert can be useful for reducing notification fatigue and highlighting activity that differs from a camera’s recent routine. But it is a beta anomaly alert, not a suspicious-person detector or crime-prediction system. Enable it only if you accept possible delays, occasional false classifications, AI-generated descriptions, and the requirement for a compatible Ring plan. Always review the underlying footage before treating an alert as evidence of danger.
