Ring Home vs. Away Modes: What’s the Difference and How to Enable Them

Ring Home and Away are both armed modes, but Alarm sensors and cameras behave differently. Learn what each mode does and how to configure it.

Home and Away are both armed Ring modes, but they do different jobs. For Ring Alarm, Home Mode typically protects exterior doors and windows while allowing people to move indoors; Away Mode typically arms interior and exterior sensors when nobody should be inside. Ring cameras and doorbells are different: Home and Away do not have fixed universal behavior. You choose whether each device records, permits Live View, uses Motion Warning, or activates Smart Responses in each mode.

Home Mode is also not the same thing as a paid “Ring Home” subscription. “Ring Home” appears in older or transitional plan names, while current U.S. materials use Ring Protect plan names. The mode is a security setting; the plan is a subscription.

Home vs. Away at a glance

Function Home Mode Away Mode
Ring Alarm status Armed Armed
Typical alarm coverage Perimeter sensors, such as doors and windows Interior and exterior contact and motion sensors
Indoor movement Usually permitted without triggering the alarm Usually monitored and capable of triggering the alarm
Exterior cameras Often left recording Usually recording
Indoor cameras Often disabled or limited for privacy Often enabled
Doorbell Can remain active Usually active
Quick Exit Available in Home Mode Not available
Open Door Arming Not the designated mode Available in Away Mode
Exact behavior Depends on each device’s settings, location, subscription, and current state

These are typical configurations, not immutable presets. Ring lets you customize individual sensors, cameras, doorbells, locks, delays, and responses.

What Ring Home Mode does

Ring Alarm

Home Mode is intended for periods when people are inside the property. It normally arms selected perimeter sensors—especially exterior doors and windows—while leaving interior motion sensors unmonitored so occupants can walk around without setting off the alarm.

#1 Best Overall
Orbitell 1080p Wireless Wi-Fi Video Doorbell Camera with Two Way Audio, Night Vision, Cloud Storage, Smart AI Motion Detection, Support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only
  • AI-Powered Smart Detection: Advanced AI technology accurately identifies people while filtering out vehicles and animals, so you only get the alerts that matter most
  • Secure Cloud Storage: Protect your recordings with AES-128 encrypted cloud storage
  • Pre-Capture Recording: Cloud subscribers benefit from pre-capture functionality, ensuring the camera starts recording right at the moment motion begins - never miss a thing
  • Reliable 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Connection: Optimized for 2.4GHz networks to deliver stable, uninterrupted performance. (Not compatible with 5GHz Wi-Fi.)
  • Exceptional Night Vision: Equipped with four powerful infrared LEDs and an advanced image sensor, providing sharp, detailed footage even in total darkness

The exact result depends on each sensor’s mode settings. You can leave an interior motion sensor active in Home Mode if you want that room protected, or turn its Home Mode monitoring off if people need to move through the room.

Home Mode can also use:

  • Entry and exit delays.
  • Sensor chirps.
  • Quick Exit, which provides a short period to leave and return without disarming the system. Ring identifies Quick Exit as a Home Mode feature.

Home Mode is therefore not “almost disarmed.” The Alarm remains armed for whichever sensors you selected.

Ring cameras and doorbells

For cameras and doorbells, Home Mode is a collection of actions that you configure per device. A privacy-conscious setup might continue recording an exterior camera and the doorbell while stopping recording on indoor cameras.

Depending on the product, you may be able to control:

  • Recording.
  • Motion Warning.
  • Live View.
  • Doorbell Smart Responses.

Home Mode does not automatically switch every camera off, and it does not guarantee that every camera remains active. Check each device’s Mode Settings rather than relying on the mode name.

What Ring Away Mode does

Ring Alarm

Away Mode is intended for when everyone has left and nobody should be moving inside. Ring typically arms all appropriate contact and motion sensors, including interior motion sensors. Movement detected indoors can therefore trigger the alarm.

An open or faulted door, window, or motion sensor may prevent Away Mode from arming normally. The app may offer to bypass the affected sensor. Bypassing allows the system to arm, but that sensor will not provide the same protection while bypassed. Do not treat bypassing as a harmless way to ignore a recurring fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Away Mode supports configurable entry and exit delays. Ring also identifies Open Door Arming as an Away Mode feature. Because an open-door arming option can reduce the certainty that the property was secured, check the premises rather than assuming the mode confirms every opening is protected.

Ring cameras and doorbells

Many households configure Away Mode to record indoor and outdoor cameras, keep the doorbell recording, enable Motion Warning where appropriate, and leave Live View available. Those actions are optional and device-specific.

Away Mode does not itself force all cameras to record or all notifications to appear. Recording and notification behavior can be affected by separate Motion Detection, Motion Alerts, and subscription settings. After changing a mode, test both whether an event is recorded and whether a notification arrives.

Home, Away, and Disarmed are three different states

Disarmed Mode is not the same as Home Mode. Disarmed normally stops Ring Alarm intrusion sensors from being armed. Home Mode leaves selected sensors armed, usually to protect the perimeter while people are home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For cameras and doorbells, Disarmed Mode can be configured separately for recording, Live View, Motion Warning, and Smart Responses. Disarmed does not necessarily mean that every Ring device is powered off. Ring says connected Fire and CO sensors remain monitored while online, and a Glass Break Sensor may also remain monitored in Disarmed Mode under specified conditions. See Ring’s current Device Modes documentation for product-specific exceptions.

Home Mode is not the same as “Ring Home”

Search results and older Ring help pages can make these terms confusing:

  • Home Mode: an armed Ring security mode for when occupants are home.
  • Away Mode: an armed Ring security mode for when occupants leave.
  • Ring Home: a subscription-plan name used in older or transitional Ring documentation.

As of August 18, 2026, Ring’s U.S. plan page lists Ring Protect Solo, Multi, and Pro among its current plans. Ring’s 2026 transition information says older Ring Home plans were renamed or migrated into newer Ring Protect plans. If your account uses an older label, check Account > Billing History and the current Ring plans page rather than assuming that an old article describes your account.

Ring currently associates Device Modes and certain digital arming and disarming functions with compatible subscriptions. Professional Monitoring is a separate service and eligibility question; it should not automatically be treated as a requirement for every Home or Away configuration.

  3. Tap Devices.
  4. Select the camera or doorbell.
  5. Tap Device Settings.
  6. Tap Mode Settings.

How to configure cameras and doorbells for each mode

  1. Open the Ring app and tap ☰ > Devices.
  2. Select the camera, doorbell, or supported Intercom device.
  3. Tap Device Settings > Mode Settings.
  4. Select Disarmed, Home, or Away.
  5. Choose the available actions for that device.
  6. Tap Save.

Available controls vary by product and model. Common choices include recording, Motion Warning, Live View, and doorbell Smart Responses.

A practical privacy-first configuration

Use this as a starting point, then adjust it to your property:

Home Mode

  • Exterior cameras: recording on.
  • Interior cameras: recording off if occupants want indoor privacy.
  • Doorbell: recording on.
  • Doorbell Live View: on if required.
  • Ring Alarm: exterior doors and windows monitored.
  • Interior motion sensors: off unless intentional indoor protection is needed.

Away Mode

  • Exterior and interior cameras: recording on where appropriate.
  • Doorbell: recording on.
  • Motion Warnings: enabled only where useful and permitted.
  • Ring Alarm: appropriate contact and motion sensors monitored.
  • Entry and exit delays: long enough for the normal route through the property.

Disarmed Mode

  • Interior cameras: off if privacy is the priority.
  • Exterior recording: optional.
  • Doorbell: typically still recording.
  • Intrusion sensors: not armed.
  • Fire and CO monitoring: remember that safety-related exceptions may remain active.

How to configure Ring Alarm sensors by mode

Ring’s current sensor configuration path is:

  1. Set the Alarm to Disarmed.
  2. Open the Ring app.
  3. Tap the Alarm tile under Devices.
  4. Tap Connected Devices.
  5. Select the sensor.
  6. Tap Mode Settings.
  7. Select the mode you want to customize.
  8. Choose whether the sensor is monitored.
  9. Configure available chirp, entry-delay, or exit-delay settings.
  10. Tap Save.

Ring’s documented delay choices are 0, 30, 45, 60, 120, or 180 seconds. Chirps can be configured in all three modes. Quick Exit is a 30-second Home Mode feature, while Open Door Arming is associated with Away Mode. Smart locks can also be configured for lock or unlock actions in Disarmed, Home, and Away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a typical home, perimeter contact sensors are monitored in Home Mode, while interior motion sensors are generally monitored only in Away Mode. If a sensor protects a workshop, detached structure, basement, or other area that nobody should enter while Away, include it in the Away configuration and test it.

How to switch Ring modes

From the Ring app

  1. Open the Ring app dashboard.
  2. Confirm that the correct Ring Location is selected.
  3. Find the Modes control in the dashboard utility bar.
  4. Select Disarmed, Home, or Away.

For Ring Alarm, current instructions also show Home or Away at the top of the main dashboard. App-based mode changes do not require the Alarm Keypad PIN according to Ring’s current arming instructions, but permissions and subscription eligibility still apply.

From a Ring Alarm Keypad

  1. Enter the Keypad code.
  2. Press Home or Away.

The keypad is useful when app access is unavailable or when household members prefer physical controls.

With a mode schedule

Ring Alarm can automatically change to Home, Away, or Disarmed at scheduled times:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Tap the Alarm tile under Devices.
  3. Open the Alarm device’s Settings.
  4. Tap Mode Schedules.
  5. Tap Add Schedule.
  6. Enter a name.
  7. Select the mode and time.
  8. Select the applicable days.
  9. Tap Save Schedule.

According to Ring’s instructions, only the account owner can create or delete schedules. A scheduled arming action automatically bypasses faulted sensors, so inspect the system afterward rather than assuming the schedule armed every device. Conflicting schedules produce an error, and schedules can be disabled with the toggle in the upper-right corner.

For shared users

A shared user may be able to view a camera without being allowed to change the location’s security mode. The account owner can review camera-mode access under Menu > Settings > Modes > Shared User Access. Permission to view a device is not automatically permission to arm or disarm the whole system.

If Modes are missing

Work through this checklist:

  • Update the Ring app.
  • Confirm that the device is online.
  • Confirm that the correct Ring Location is selected.
  • Check whether the account has a compatible Ring subscription.
  • Confirm that you are the account owner or have the required permissions.
  • For a camera or doorbell, open Device Settings > Mode Settings and check whether Modes must be enabled.
  • If you are a shared user, ask the owner to review Settings > Modes > Shared User Access.

Accounts with multiple properties can accidentally change the wrong location. Ring’s location controls are separate, so verify the location shown at the top of the app before switching modes.

If Away Mode will not arm

Common causes include:

  • An open door or window.
  • A faulted contact or motion sensor.
  • An Alarm or Base Station that is offline.
  • Insufficient account permissions.
  • A conflicting mode schedule.
  • A sensor that must be bypassed before arming.

Read the app’s fault message and inspect the affected device. If you bypass a sensor, understand that it will not provide the intended protection while bypassed. Fixing the sensor is preferable to repeatedly bypassing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Home Mode triggers an alarm when someone moves inside

This usually means an interior motion sensor is still monitored in Home Mode, or the sensor’s mode assignment differs from your expectation.

  1. Disarm the system safely.
  2. Open the affected sensor’s Mode Settings.
  3. Select Home.
  4. Turn monitoring off if indoor movement should be permitted.
  5. Leave it enabled if you intentionally want that interior area protected.
  6. Save the change and test it.

If an indoor camera still records in Home Mode

Home Mode does not automatically disable indoor cameras. Check the camera’s individual settings:

  1. Verify the active Ring Location.
  2. Open Device Settings > Mode Settings.
  3. Select Home.
  4. Review Recording, Motion Warning, and Live View separately.
  5. Save and perform a controlled test.

Also remember that Motion Detection, Motion Alerts, recording, and Live View are related but distinct controls. A mode may change one without changing every alert setting. Test both the recorded event and the notification; do not assume one proves the other.

How to test your Home and Away setup

Do the first test while everyone is present and able to disarm the system:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Set the system to Home.
  2. Open and close a protected exterior door.
  3. Walk past an interior motion sensor to confirm whether it is intentionally active or inactive.
  4. Trigger an exterior camera’s motion zone with controlled movement.
  5. Press the doorbell and verify its recording and response settings.
  6. Check both recorded events and notifications.
  7. Set Away only after confirming that nobody remains inside.
  8. Repeat the relevant exterior and interior tests, then disarm the system.

Do not test by creating a real alarm emergency or by bypassing a sensor without understanding the coverage you are losing.

Which mode should you use?

  • People are home and moving around: Use Home Mode, with perimeter contacts monitored and interior motion sensors configured according to your needs.
  • Everyone has left: Use Away Mode after checking that doors and windows are closed and that no one, pet, worker, or contractor remains inside.
  • Sleeping: Home Mode is often the better starting point, but configure bedroom routes, interior sensors, and entry delays for the actual household.
  • Maintenance or privacy-sensitive work: Use Disarmed or a carefully configured Home setup, remembering that safety sensors may remain monitored.
  • Camera-only installation: Configure each camera and doorbell independently; do not assume Alarm behavior applies.

For current device-specific behavior, see Ring’s Device Modes guide, Alarm arming instructions, and Ring app documentation.
