Start with Device Health, not a factory reset. In the Ring app, check whether the Doorbell is offline, reconnect it to Wi-Fi, verify its battery or wired power, restart the router, and then check your phone’s permissions. Factory-reset the Doorbell only after those steps fail. “After an update” describes the timing, but it does not prove that a firmware update caused the fault: the change may have involved the Ring app, phone operating system, router, or even the product name displayed in the app.
First, identify what stopped working
The correct fix depends on the symptom. Before changing settings, press the physical Doorbell button and watch its LED, then check whether the problem affects one Doorbell or every Ring device in the home.

| What you see | Most likely area | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Ring app says Offline | Wi-Fi, power, or network authentication | Open Device Health and reconnect Wi-Fi |
| Live View fails, but motion alerts still arrive | Bandwidth, app permissions, or a cloud session | Check RSSI, restart the Doorbell, and test the app |
| Motion alerts stopped | Motion settings, connectivity, battery, or phone notifications | Check Device Health and notification settings |
| The local chime works, but the phone does not alert | Phone permissions, Focus/Do Not Disturb, or account access | Check Ring notifications and try another phone |
| No LED, button response, or other activity | Battery, transformer, breaker, or hardware | Check power before troubleshooting the app |
| The update appears stuck | Power or network interruption during installation | Keep power connected and avoid repeatedly interrupting it |
| The Doorbell’s name changed | Possible 2026 product-label change | Confirm the model rather than assuming it was replaced |
When a Ring device is offline, Ring says it cannot provide Live View, alerts, or event recording. The app may show an offline icon, Device Health details, or an error such as P1-65. Do not remove the Doorbell from your Ring account yet; account removal and a factory reset are not the same thing.

Is this really a Doorbell firmware problem?
| What changed? | Investigate first |
|---|---|
| The Ring app updated | App permissions, login state, cache/session, and phone compatibility |
| The Doorbell displayed a software update | Power stability, Wi-Fi, update completion, and reboot state |
| The router or ISP equipment updated | SSID/password, 2.4 GHz access, security mode, firewall, and mesh behavior |
| The phone operating system updated | Bluetooth, location, local-network, camera, and notification permissions |
| The product name changed | Possibly only a label change, not a device or firmware failure |
Ring has not established in the cited support material that a 2026 firmware update universally breaks Doorbells. Treat the timing as a clue, not a diagnosis.

There is also a separate source of confusion: Ring began changing selected product names in July and August 2026. For example, Battery Doorbell (2nd Gen) became Battery Doorbell 2K, while Wired Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen) became Wired Doorbell 4K Pro. Ring says those naming changes do not alter the hardware, firmware, features, subscription, or video history. See Ring’s product-name notice.
Quick fixes that do not erase your setup
1. Check Device Health
- Open the Ring app dashboard.
- Tap the ••• menu on the affected Doorbell tile.
- Tap Settings, then Device Health.
- Review network status, Wi-Fi name, RSSI or signal strength, battery status, and any error code.
- Under Network, select Reconnect or Change Network.
Use Reconnect when the existing network details are still valid. Use Change Network after changing the Wi-Fi name or password, replacing the router, moving to another network, or switching to a mesh, guest, or ISP-managed network. Menu labels can vary by app version, operating system, region, and Doorbell model. Ring’s offline-device guidance is the best current reference for the exact prompts.
2. Restart the modem and router
- Unplug the modem and Wi-Fi router.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Restore power.
- Wait until internet and Wi-Fi service return.
- Recheck Device Health and Live View.
If you have multiple independent routers, they may create competing DHCP networks or double-NAT problems. Remove the redundant router or ask the ISP/router manufacturer about bridge mode. Do not permanently weaken router security or disable its firewall as a first-line fix. If a router-vendor diagnostic requires a temporary security change, restore it afterward.

- Removable-battery model: remove the battery pack for about 10 seconds, then reinstall it.
- Internal-battery model: follow the procedure for that exact model; do not assume the removable-battery method applies.
- Plug-in model: unplug it for about 10 seconds, then reconnect it.
- Wired model: turn off power at the appropriate switch or circuit breaker, then restore it.
A battery Doorbell that will not turn on after draining should first be charged with a USB wall charger connected to an outlet for 30 minutes. More specialized recovery instructions differ by model and region, so consult the exact manual or Ring Support rather than applying a procedure intended for another Doorbell. Ring’s reboot guidance explains the device-type distinctions.

4. Reboot from the Ring app
If the Doorbell is still connected to Wi-Fi:
- Open the Ring app and tap ☰ Menu.
- Tap Devices and select the Doorbell.
- Open Device Health.
- Scroll to Reboot This Device.
- Confirm and wait several minutes.
Ring states that in-app reboot requires the device to be connected to Wi-Fi. If it is offline, use the physical power-cycle method instead.
Fix Wi-Fi and router compatibility
Ring requires an active internet connection for Doorbell and camera functions. Ring describes an RSSI of -80 or worse as very poor and likely to produce intermittent service or disconnections. It also publishes 2.5 Mbps as an example requirement for a 1536p stream. These are Ring’s guidance figures, not guaranteed thresholds for every model, feature, or home environment. Read the Wi-Fi recommendations for context.
- Stand near the router and reconnect the Doorbell.
- If your router permits it, test a dedicated 2.4 GHz SSID. Ring recommends trying 2.4 GHz for some connection problems; do not assume every model is incompatible with 5 GHz.
- Temporarily test with a phone hotspot. This is a diagnostic test, not necessarily a suitable permanent network.
- If the hotspot works but home Wi-Fi fails, investigate router security, DHCP, firewall rules, band steering, mesh roaming, or ISP equipment.
- If the Doorbell fails on both networks, suspect power, hardware, account, or a failed setup state.
2.4 GHz typically travels farther and penetrates walls better, although it can be more congested. A separate 2.4 GHz network is useful for diagnosis, but may not be necessary as a permanent configuration.

Fix Ring app and phone problems
- Install the current Ring app and phone operating-system updates.
- Enable Ring notifications.
- Check Focus, Do Not Disturb, and battery-saving restrictions.
- Enable Bluetooth during setup or reconnection.
- Allow location access if the app requests it.
- On iPhone, allow local-network access where applicable.
- Allow camera access for QR-code scanning.
- Temporarily disable a VPN during Wi-Fi setup.
- Confirm that you are signed into the correct Ring account and location.
Ring identifies location permissions, Bluetooth, and router configuration as possible setup blockers in its setup troubleshooting guidance. VPN interference is useful as a diagnostic possibility, but disabling a VPN is not a universal Ring requirement.
Try another phone or tablet if available. If the Doorbell works there, focus on the original phone’s permissions, VPN, operating system, or app installation. If both devices fail, investigate the Doorbell, network, account, or Ring service instead. Reinstalling the app should not be the first response to a power or Wi-Fi failure.
What to do when an update appears stuck
If the app shows that an update is actively progressing, keep the Doorbell powered and avoid repeatedly unplugging it or pressing buttons. An interruption can create a more complicated recovery state. If the screen is genuinely frozen, use the official model-specific recovery route rather than repeatedly interrupting power.
A factory reset normally restores the device to a setup state; it should not be described as a firmware rollback. There is no basis here for promising that you can return to an earlier firmware version.

Factory reset: use it only after the safe checks
Use a reset only after checking power, restarting the network, reconnecting Wi-Fi, verifying phone permissions, and testing another network where practical. Ring’s general guidance is:
- Locate the setup button for the exact model.
- Hold it for 20 seconds.
- Release it and wait for the Doorbell to restart.
- Set it up again in the Ring app if prompted.
Button locations vary. Internal-battery Doorbells generally place the button on the back; removable-battery models place it under the faceplate on the front; wired models place it under the faceplate on the right side. Confirm the exact location in Ring’s factory-reset instructions.
A reset can require physical access, Wi-Fi credentials, and complete setup again. Do not remove the Doorbell from your Ring account before trying less-destructive steps. Resetting and removing a device from the account are not interchangeable actions.
If the Doorbell is still dead
Escalate to Ring Support when the Doorbell remains unresponsive after a full charge or correct power cycle, will not connect to either home Wi-Fi or a diagnostic hotspot, cannot be found by multiple current phones, displays an account or ownership problem, or shows an LED pattern associated with hardware or update failure.

Wired models need separate power diagnosis. A tripped breaker, loose connection, unstable wiring, or an incorrect or insufficient transformer can make a Doorbell appear to have failed after an update. Do not remove a battery from a hardwired model unless that specific model includes one and its instructions say to do so.
Before contacting Ring, record:
- Exact Doorbell model and displayed product name
- LED pattern and physical-button response
- Battery percentage or wired-power symptoms
- Device Health status, RSSI, and error code
- Time the failure began
- Ring app version and phone operating system
- Router model and any recent network change
- Whether another phone, Wi-Fi network, or hotspot works
Use Ring’s Help and Support hub for current product, app, Wi-Fi, subscription, and contact options.
When an accessory or replacement makes sense
| Possible purchase | Reasonable only when | Not a solution for |
|---|---|---|
| Ring Chime Pro | Device Health indicates weak coverage near the Doorbell | A dead device, account issue, charging failure, or hardware fault |
| eero mesh Wi-Fi | The home has broader coverage problems, not just one failed Doorbell | A single Doorbell with healthy Wi-Fi elsewhere |
| Ring Protect | You want cloud recordings, event history, or plan-dependent features | Offline status, failed Live View, power, or setup problems |
| Model-specific replacement battery | The exact model will not hold charge after proper charging | A confirmed Wi-Fi or app failure |
| Replacement Doorbell | Support, warranty, power, reset, and alternate-network checks have failed | A verified router-coverage problem or multi-device outage |
Ring’s general FAQ says real-time video and answering doorbell notifications are available without a subscription, while recording and storage depend on plan and account conditions. A subscription is therefore not a repair for connectivity.
Quick Recap
Fast decision tree
- No LED or response? Check battery, charger, breaker, or transformer, then power-cycle.
- Offline in the app? Open Device Health and use Reconnect or Change Network.
- Only Live View fails? Check RSSI, bandwidth, app permissions, and reboot the Doorbell.
- Only phone alerts fail? Check Ring notifications, Focus/Do Not Disturb, account access, and another phone.
- Home Wi-Fi fails but hotspot works? Investigate router bands, security, DHCP, mesh behavior, and firewall settings.
- Every network and phone fails? Charge or power-cycle, then contact Ring before replacing the unit.
- All Ring devices fail together? Treat it as a router, ISP, app, account, or Ring-service issue rather than immediately blaming one Doorbell.
- Nothing else works? Use the model-specific reset and complete setup again.
