RFK Jr. Calls Carbon Robotics’ Laser Weeder the “Light at the End of the Tunnel” in the Herbicide Fight

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has called Carbon Robotics’ LaserWeeder a potential alternative to chemical herbicides—but he also acknowledged that agriculture is “not there yet.” The machine is already a commercial product used by growers, yet its affordability, field performance and suitability for smaller farms remain unresolved.

What RFK Jr. said about laser weeding

Kennedy discussed Carbon Robotics’ LaserWeeder during a conversation with Theo Von on This Past Weekend. Carbon Robotics publicized the clip on February 12, 2026, and GeekWire reported on the comments on February 13.

Kennedy described the equipment as a tractor attachment that uses programmed lasers to identify and destroy weeds without spraying chemicals. He said that, if the technology could be made affordable—particularly for smaller farms—it might offer an answer to dependence on herbicides. He referred to it as “the light at the end of the tunnel,” while qualifying the praise by saying agriculture had not reached that endpoint.

That was an endorsement of a promising approach, not an announcement of a federal program, a ban on herbicides or a government finding that Carbon Robotics’ system can replace chemical weed control everywhere.

Why herbicide alternatives matter to Kennedy

The remarks fit Kennedy’s long-running focus on chemicals, food production and public-health concerns. His past legal work included representation connected with Monsanto and a 2018 jury award of $289 million in a Roundup-related cancer case. That figure should not be treated as the simple final outcome of the litigation: the award was later subject to legal proceedings and settlement developments.

Kennedy’s claims about glyphosate and health should remain attributed political and public-health positions. Glyphosate is one herbicide; it is not synonymous with every herbicide, pesticide regulation, occupational exposure pathway or environmental effect. Herbicide resistance and chemical-use concerns are also distinct from the question of whether a particular product is safe under a particular use pattern.

How Carbon Robotics’ LaserWeeder works

The LaserWeeder combines cameras, computer vision, artificial intelligence, robotics and laser energy in a field implement. In broad terms, the process is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Cameras scan plants in and around the crop row.
  2. Computer-vision software identifies likely crop plants and weeds.
  3. The system calculates each target’s position.
  4. A laser pulse is directed at the weed’s growing point or other plant tissue.
  5. The targeted weed is damaged or killed without mechanical cultivation of the treated row.

Carbon Robotics describes its current software platform as Carbon AI, powered by a “Large Plant Model.” The company says the model was trained using more than 150 million labeled plants, with data spanning 15 countries and more than 100 crops. Those figures are company-reported claims, not independent validation of accuracy, recall, crop-specific performance or financial return.

“Laser” does not mean the machine indiscriminately burns everything in its path. Its usefulness depends on detecting the right plant, identifying the weed early enough, maintaining an accurate aim and avoiding crop overlap. Nor does “no herbicide” mean no operating inputs. The equipment still requires energy, maintenance, transport, trained or supervised operators and suitable field conditions.

A commercial machine, not just a prototype

The LaserWeeder is a production agricultural machine. Carbon Robotics lists the LaserWeeder G2 as a principal product, and its chief executive, Paul Mikesell, pushed back on the idea that the technology was merely prospective. He said farmers in the United States and internationally were already using the machines.

Carbon Robotics currently says its systems are used by more than 200 growers in 15 countries and across more than 100 crops. Those deployment figures come from the company; commercial availability should not be confused with widespread adoption across all types of farms.

What is the LaserWeeder G2?

Carbon Robotics introduced the G2 product line in February 2025, describing it as faster, lighter and more modular than earlier LaserWeeder models. The company’s news archive records the product announcement and later developments, including the February 2, 2026 announcement of its Large Plant Model.

Current reviewed material does not provide a public purchase or lease price or a complete specification sheet. Buyers should obtain current figures directly from the company rather than relying on outdated descriptions or promotional videos. Important specifications include:

  • Implement width and configuration;
  • Laser count and power;
  • Real-world acres-per-hour throughput;
  • Tractor horsepower and compatibility;
  • Fuel or electrical requirements;
  • Maintenance intervals and service coverage; and
  • Financing, lease and software-support terms.

Where laser weeding can make economic sense

The strongest potential fit is often high-value specialty agriculture, where hand-weeding and crop damage are expensive. A laser system may also appeal to growers facing labor shortages, herbicide-resistant weeds, pressure to reduce chemical applications or the soil disturbance associated with repeated mechanical cultivation.

Carbon Robotics claims reductions of up to 80% in costs, yield increases of 5% to 50%, a one-to-three-year payback and a machine life of seven to ten years. These are company-reported figures. They are not guarantees, and their value depends on crop, acreage, labor rates, weed pressure, utilization, financing, machine performance and local operating conditions.

Can it replace herbicides?

The careful answer is: sometimes, partially and conditionally—not universally.

Laser weeding may reduce or eliminate herbicide applications in suitable fields. It may reduce hand labor, avoid soil disturbance in the treated row and provide another tool against herbicide-resistant weeds. It could also be useful within organic or lower-chemical production systems, subject to the applicable certification and operating rules.

But herbicides can cover large areas quickly and may remain cheaper for some crops and farm sizes. Laser machines have substantial capital costs and require compatible tractors, transport, maintenance and operating expertise. Crop spacing and weed geometry are critical: clearly visible weeds in widely spaced rows may be easier to target than weeds beneath a dense or overlapping canopy.

A farm may still need crop rotation, cover crops, cultivation, hand labor, scouting, spot treatments or conventional herbicides. A more accurate description is “reduced herbicide use in a particular operation or field,” not “chemical-free farming.” A farm using laser weed control may continue to use fertilizers, fungicides, insecticides or other inputs.

The unresolved question: affordability for smaller farms

Kennedy’s affordability caveat is central. A commercial machine can be real and useful without being economical for every farm.

A prospective buyer should calculate current spending on hand-weeding labor, herbicides, adjuvants, application, mechanical cultivation, compliance and crop losses. The comparison should then include the machine’s purchase or lease cost, financing, annual utilization, maintenance, service, operator time, transport, downtime and residual value.

For smaller farms, ownership may not be the only route. Leasing, custom operators, cooperatives and shared-equipment arrangements could spread the capital cost across more acres. Whether those models work depends on seasonal timing, travel distance, scheduling and the availability of local service.

Performance questions buyers should ask

A demonstration on the farm’s own crop, weed species and soil conditions is more informative than a generic promotional video. Buyers should request:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Crop-specific accuracy and weed-species data;
  • False-positive rates, including crop-damage rates;
  • False-negative rates and expected follow-up treatments;
  • Throughput under realistic field conditions;
  • Performance in dust, glare, shadows, rain, residue and uneven terrain;
  • Calibration requirements for new crops and fields;
  • Operator, remote-supervision and training requirements;
  • Warranty, parts and service-response commitments;
  • Data ownership, connectivity and software-update requirements; and
  • References from growers with comparable acreage and crops.

Important limits and safety considerations

False positives can damage valuable crop plants. False negatives allow weeds to survive, mature and produce seed, potentially requiring another pass or a backup treatment. Higher operating speeds may also reduce the time available to detect and target individual weeds, so a published speed or capacity figure is not necessarily the same as seasonal field throughput.

Industrial lasers require controlled operating procedures, safety systems, shielding where applicable and trained personnel. The fact that the beam is aimed at weeds does not, by itself, establish that the technology is risk-free.

The environmental comparison also requires more than counting avoided herbicide applications. Energy or fuel use, manufacturing, batteries or component replacement, transport, maintenance and additional tractor passes all belong in a full assessment.

Laser weeding versus other approaches

Approach Potential strength Important trade-off
Herbicides Scalable, familiar and often fast Resistance, application requirements and chemical-use concerns
Mechanical cultivation Widely available and understandable technology Can disturb soil, damage crops and miss weeds close to plants
Hand weeding Highly precise and flexible Labor-intensive and vulnerable to labor shortages
Camera-guided mechanical weeders Can target weeds with blades or hoes rather than lasers Still depends on crop geometry and avoiding crop damage
Cultural controls Can reduce weed pressure over the whole rotation Requires broader planning and usually does not act alone
Integrated weed management Combines methods to manage cost and resistance More complex than choosing one replacement technology

The bottom line

RFK Jr. was right to identify laser weeding as a potentially important direction, but his “light at the end of the tunnel” phrase describes a possibility rather than a completed transition. Carbon Robotics’ LaserWeeder is already commercially deployed, so the key issue is no longer whether the machine exists. It is whether the system can deliver reliable, affordable weed control across enough crops, acres and farm sizes to replace—or more realistically reduce—the role of herbicides in particular production systems.
