Amazon’s Ring is entering the smoke-alarm market through a partnership with Kidde—not by manufacturing a Ring-branded detector. The new Kidde Smart Smoke and Smart Smoke + Carbon Monoxide alarms add Ring app notifications, low-battery alerts, Alexa compatibility and optional professional monitoring. They can operate without a Ring Alarm base station, but they do require Wi-Fi and the Ring app.
For homeowners replacing expired alarms, the main choice is between battery and hardwired models, smoke-only and smoke/CO versions, and free app alerts versus paid emergency-response monitoring.

What Amazon and Ring launched
Announced at CES in January 2025 and initially released in the U.S. in April 2025, the products are Kidde alarms with Ring technology built in. They are intended to provide the local protection of a conventional smoke alarm while adding remote notifications through Ring.
The lineup includes:
- Kidde Smart Smoke Alarm: detects smoke only.
- Kidde Smart Smoke + Carbon Monoxide Alarm: detects both smoke and carbon monoxide.
By August 2026, Ring’s listings also showed battery-powered and hardwired versions of both categories. The Ring integration does not change the basic life-safety role of the alarm: it still needs to be installed, tested and replaced according to Kidde’s instructions and applicable building and fire codes.

Ring Alarm is not required
The Ring-enabled Kidde alarms can connect directly to the Ring app. You do not need Ring Alarm, Ring Alarm Pro, a Ring base station or a separate Ring hub.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You do need a Ring account, the latest version of the Ring app and a suitable Wi-Fi connection. The battery model specifies 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi, so a location with weak coverage—or a network configured only for 5 GHz—may prevent reliable setup or remote alerts.

- Over 25% faster smoke detection (based on internal testing vs a leading competitor)
- Optional Ring subscription (sold separately) with 24/7 smoke monitoring for $5/month
- No Wiring Needed: Operates on 2-AA alkaline batteries (included) for simple use throughout your home
- Whole Home Smart Connectivity: Get mobile alerts for every Kidde alarm in your home through wire-free interconnectivity — when one alarm sounds, they all do. (Check the user guide for more information)
Ring’s setup process is:
- Open the Ring app.
- Tap Set Up a Device.
- Scan the QR code on the back of the Kidde alarm.
- Follow the instructions to connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Complete the alarm test and installation steps.
Ring’s setup guide does not replace the Kidde manual. Hardwired installation, alarm placement and interconnection must follow the product documentation. If existing wiring or connectors are uncertain, a qualified electrician should check the installation.
What works without a subscription?
Basic Ring app alerts do not require paid professional monitoring. Depending on the model, users can receive notifications for:
- Smoke detection
- Carbon monoxide detection
- Alarm events
- Low battery
Ring’s product information also states that eligible devices provide 24 hours of event history without a subscription, compared with 60 days when Smoke & CO Monitoring is active.
That does not mean Ring is monitoring the home for free. App notifications depend on the alarm, batteries or mains power, Wi-Fi, internet access, phone settings, Ring account status and cloud-service availability. The local alarm should remain the primary warning. A phone alert may be delayed or unavailable during a network or service outage.

What the $5 monitoring plan adds
Ring lists Smoke & CO Pro Monitoring at $5 per month or $50 per year. A Ring Protect subscription is not required to purchase the service for an eligible device. Ring also says that Smoke & CO Monitoring is included with its Ring AI Pro and Virtual Security Guard subscriptions, according to current product information.
Ring describes different response procedures for the two hazards:
- Smoke: trained agents contact designated emergency contacts to confirm the event and request fire-department dispatch when appropriate.
- Carbon monoxide: Ring says the monitoring center requests fire response immediately and then contacts emergency contacts.
The monitoring service is stated to be available in all 50 U.S. states, excluding territories, for eligible residential locations. It is not available for business or commercially zoned addresses. Local permits, false-alarm requirements and dispatch fees may apply. Ring also does not own the monitoring center. Read the monitoring guidance before subscribing.
Battery or hardwired: which should you choose?
Battery models
The battery alarms use two replaceable AA batteries. They are generally the simpler option where no alarm wiring exists, making them suitable for many renovations, additions and battery-powered replacements.
Rank #4
- Real-Time Ring App Notifications: Home or away, get smoke or low battery warnings (no subscription required)
- Over 25% faster smoke detection (based on internal testing vs a leading competitor)
- Optional Ring subscription (sold separately) with 24/7 smoke monitoring for $5/month
- Whole Home Smart Connectivity: Get mobile alerts for every hardwired alarm in your home by adding just one Kidde smart detector; check the user guide for more information
- Reduced Nuisance Alarms: Enhanced sensing technology reduces false alarms often caused by cooking when compared to prior Kidde generations of smoke alarms
The battery smoke model lists a photoelectric smoke sensor, an 85-dB alarm measured at 10 feet and a 10-year limited manufacturer warranty excluding batteries. Battery operation still requires regular testing and prompt battery replacement when the alarm or app reports a low-battery condition.
Hardwired models
Choose a wired model when the home already has compatible hardwired alarm connections and you want to retain mains power with battery backup. Do not assume that a quick connector makes every installation interchangeable. Wiring, connector type, alarm generation and interconnect requirements must match.
Replacing one device in an interconnected system without checking the other alarms can leave the installation partially incompatible. If the wiring is unfamiliar or the existing alarms are interconnected, have the model and circuit checked before installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSmoke-only versus smoke and CO
A smoke-only alarm cannot detect carbon monoxide. The combination model adds an electrochemical CO sensor, making it the more appropriate choice where CO protection is required or desired—particularly in homes with fuel-burning appliances, an attached garage or other potential CO sources.
Best Value
- Instant notifications — Get alerts when your existing smoke or CO alarms go off whether you’re at home, or away.
- Mounts in minutes near existing alarms, no tools or wiring. Place within 6 inches of existing smoke or CO alarms.
- Add 24/7 Pro Monitoring with a compatible Ring subscription — Emergency response for break-ins, fires, and more, with no multi-year contracts.
- No base station required — connects over Amazon Sidewalk for simple, flexible coverage throughout your home and beyond (Amazon Sidewalk required for use; coverage may vary).
- This device does not detect fire, smoke or carbon monoxide. For best performance, use with detectors that are 10 years old or less and comply with all applicable standards.
Placement guidance cited by Ring includes at least one smoke alarm on every level, including basements; inside every bedroom; and outside each sleeping area. Kidde recommends CO alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas, with additional placement for broader bedroom coverage. Local requirements may be stricter, so local code and the manufacturer’s instructions take priority.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can existing Kidde alarms join the system?
Sometimes. Ring says an eligible Ring-enabled Kidde alarm can provide mobile alerts for other compatible Kidde alarms in the home. Depending on the model, interconnection may be wireless or hardwired.
Compatibility is not universal. The exact Kidde model, generation, wiring and interconnection method matter. An arbitrary older smoke detector—or a non-Kidde alarm—should not be assumed to work. Check the model number against the Kidde user guide and product documentation before mixing devices.
Also distinguish between:
- Ring-enabled Kidde alarm: the detector itself connects to Ring.
- Compatible existing Kidde alarm: may interconnect with the new alarm under specified conditions.
- Unverified old or non-Kidde alarm: should not be treated as compatible.
How it differs from the Ring Smoke & CO Listener
The Ring Smoke & CO Listener is an alternative for people who want to keep an existing compatible alarm. It listens for the sound or signal of that alarm and requires a Ring Alarm base station for this configuration.
The distinction is important: the Listener is not a smoke detector. It reports that an existing alarm has sounded. The Kidde Smart product replaces the alarm itself and can operate without Ring Alarm.
- Choose Kidde Smart + Ring when replacing an expired alarm or when you want a standalone Wi-Fi alarm.
- Consider the Listener when you already own Ring Alarm and preserving compatible alarm hardware matters.
Important limitations for homeowners and contractors
- Wi-Fi dependency: a changed router password, weak 2.4-GHz signal, band-steering issue or internet outage can interrupt remote notifications.
- Cloud dependency: app alerts and event history depend on Ring services, the app and account access.
- Local alarms still matter: never treat an app alert or professional monitoring as a replacement for audible alarms correctly placed throughout the home.
- Hardwired work can be hazardous: shut off power as appropriate and use a qualified installer when wiring compatibility or electrical safety is unclear.
- Commercial exclusion: the professional monitoring service is not available for commercially zoned properties.
- False alarms: local authorities may impose permit requirements, penalties or dispatch fees.
- Performance claims: Kidde promotes smoke detection more than 25% faster and up to three times more precise. Those are manufacturer claims based on internal testing, including comparisons involving smoldering wood fires and earlier competitor products—not independent laboratory benchmarks.
Who should buy one?
The Ring-enabled Kidde alarms make the most sense when you are already replacing alarms and want remote notifications without purchasing a complete Ring Alarm system. The battery version is the practical choice where no compatible wiring exists; the hardwired version is better when replacing a matching hardwired installation. Choose the smoke/CO model when carbon monoxide protection is needed.
They are less compelling as a reason to replace functioning, code-compliant alarms solely for app integration. Buyers who prefer a fully local system may also favor conventional interconnected alarms, which do not depend on Wi-Fi, an internet connection or a cloud account for their primary warning.
