Revit does not natively export a schedule as an .xlsx workbook. Its built-in command creates a CSV or other delimited text file, which Microsoft Excel can open or import. The result is a static snapshot of the selected schedule—not a live or bidirectional Revit-to-Excel link.
For a one-time report, the native workflow is usually sufficient: open the schedule, choose File → Export → Reports → Schedule, configure the output, and open the resulting file in Excel.

Before exporting
Prepare the schedule you actually want to share. Revit exports the schedule view and its configured fields rather than an unrestricted dump of every model parameter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open the required schedule in the Project Browser.
- Check its fields, filters, sorting, grouping, calculated values, formatting, and itemization settings.
- Decide whether the file is for data analysis or human-readable presentation.
- Confirm that you have permission to access and export the project data.
- Have Excel, or another spreadsheet application that supports delimited text files, available.
Autodesk’s guidance on schedule configuration is available in its Revit schedule documentation.

How to export a Revit schedule to Excel
-
Open the schedule. In the Project Browser, double-click the schedule view you want to export. The exported rows and columns will reflect that view’s settings.
-
Start the export. Select File → Export → Reports → Schedule. Autodesk identifies this command as
ID_FILE_EXPORT_SCHEDULEin its keyboard-shortcut documentation. -
Choose a folder and file name. Use a descriptive name such as:

-
Configure the headers. In the Export Schedule dialog, choose whether to export One row or Multiple rows, as formatted. One row exports only the bottom column-header row and is generally better for filtering and analysis. Multiple rows preserves multi-level or grouped headers for a presentation-oriented copy.
-
Choose group and spacing options. Enable or disable the export of group headers, footers, and blank lines. Keep them for a human-readable report containing subtotals and visual separators. Exclude them when the file will be filtered, processed, or imported into another system.
-
Set the delimiter and text qualifier. Revit provides options for a tab, space, comma, or semicolon delimiter, and for single quotes, double quotes, or no text qualifier.

Save the file. Revit writes delimited text. Depending on the Revit version and dialog behavior, the extension may be
.csvor another text-oriented extension. Check the actual extension rather than assuming the output is an Excel workbook.
Autodesk documents these export controls in its schedule export instructions. Revit 2026 also documents CSV schedule export in its What’s New documentation.
Recommended export settings
| Requirement | Recommended setting |
|---|---|
| Clean data analysis | One header row; exclude group headers, footers, and blank lines |
| Human-readable report | Multiple rows as formatted; include group headers and footers |
| Standard comma-separated workflow | Comma delimiter with double-quote text qualification |
| Regional Excel settings expecting semicolons | Semicolon delimiter with double-quote text qualification |
| Values containing commas | Comma delimiter with double-quote text qualification |
| Another software system | Use the delimiter and qualifier required by that system |
Comma is not universally correct: Excel’s default interpretation can depend on regional settings. If the target workbook is used by several offices or countries, confirm the expected delimiter before distributing the export.
How to open the export in Excel
Option 1: Open the file directly
For a straightforward schedule:
- Open Excel.
- Select File → Open.
- Choose the exported CSV or text file.
- Check that the columns are separated correctly.
- Save a working copy as
.xlsxif you need formulas, formatting, worksheets, or other workbook features.
Direct opening is quick, but Excel may automatically convert identifiers, dates, quantities, and other values.
Option 2: Import the file through Excel
Controlled import is safer when the schedule contains commas in descriptions, semicolons, quoted text, unit strings, non-ASCII characters, leading zeroes, dates, or long identifiers.
- Create a blank workbook.
- Choose Data → From Text/CSV.
- Select the Revit export.
- Choose the delimiter used in Revit.
- Preview the columns before loading.
- Set sensitive columns—such as room numbers, codes, and identifiers—to Text.
- Load the data and save the workbook as
.xlsx.
Importing is particularly important for values such as 00125, which Excel may otherwise turn into 125, or long identifiers that may be displayed in scientific notation.
What the exported file includes
The output can reflect the schedule’s configured content, including:

- Displayed calculated values
- Grouped headers and rows, when selected
- Group footers and totals, when selected
- Blank lines, when selected
- Formatted schedule values shown in the view
It is still a flat, file-based export. It does not preserve the full relationship structure of the Revit model, and spreadsheet formatting is not equivalent to a fully formatted Revit schedule.

All columns appear in one Excel column
Cause: Excel used a different delimiter from the one selected in Revit.
Fix: Re-import through Data → From Text/CSV, select the correct comma, semicolon, tab, or other delimiter, and check the preview before loading.
Commas split descriptions into separate columns
Cause: The description contains commas and the text qualifier was not honored.
Fix: Re-export with a comma delimiter and double-quote text qualification, then import the file while setting double quotes as the text qualifier. Do not manually split a damaged column.

Headers are duplicated or confusing
Cause: The schedule uses multiple or grouped header rows.
Fix: Use One row for an analysis copy, or use Multiple rows, as formatted when the visual hierarchy matters. Many teams create both versions.

Group totals or blank separators are missing
Cause: Group headers, footers, or blank lines were disabled in the export dialog.
Fix: Re-export with the required options enabled.
Room numbers become dates or leading zeroes disappear
Cause: Excel inferred a data type while opening the file.
Fix: Import rather than directly open the file, and set affected columns to Text.
Units or symbols look inconsistent
Cause: The schedule may contain display-formatted values rather than raw parameter values, or Excel may interpret symbols differently.
Fix: Check the field formatting in Revit and decide whether the spreadsheet is for reporting or data re-entry. Do not treat visually formatted output as a reliable bulk-edit source without a tested round-trip workflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does editing Excel update Revit?
No—not with the native export. Revit’s built-in command creates a one-time snapshot. Editing the CSV or the resulting workbook does not normally change the Revit model, and Excel formulas added after export do not become Revit parameters.

Choosing between native export, Dynamo, and an add-in
| Need | Best-fit approach | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One-time schedule report | Native CSV export | Simple but static |
| Clean spreadsheet analysis | Native export plus controlled Excel import | Requires delimiter and data-type checks |
| Many schedules or repeated exports | Add-in or custom automation | Requires setup, compatibility checks, or licensing |
| Bulk editing of Revit parameters | Bidirectional add-in or Dynamo | Requires safeguards and parameter mapping |
| Custom repeatable transformation | Dynamo | Graphs need maintenance and testing |
| Database-oriented exchange | Revit DB Link | More complex than a simple CSV |
| External tables placed on Revit sheets | A tool such as Ideate Sticky or CTC Schedule XL | Designed for external or formatted content rather than a basic model export |
Autodesk lists DB Link, Dynamo, and third-party add-ins as alternatives for more advanced Excel-to-Revit workflows.
Examples of tools for advanced workflows
Native export is normally the right choice for a single schedule. Consider specialist tools only when their particular capability justifies the added dependency.

Revit LT
Revit LT documentation describes the same delimited-text schedule export process, including controls for headers, group headers, footers, blank lines, delimiters, and text qualifiers. The Revit LT export documentation is the appropriate reference for that product edition.
Bottom line
Use File → Export → Reports → Schedule to create a CSV or delimited text export, then import it into Excel when data types or delimiters matter. Save it as .xlsx only after Excel has loaded the data correctly. The native method is reliable for static reports, but it is not a live link and does not write Excel edits back to Revit. Use Dynamo, DB Link, or a suitable add-in only when you need automation, batch processing, formatted workbook output, or controlled round-trip editing.
