9 Smart Home Gadgets That Will Actually Deliver Real Savings in 2026

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best money-saving smart-home upgrades control large loads—not cameras, speakers, or decorative connected accessories. For most U.S. homes in 2026, start with an ENERGY STAR smart thermostat, a heat-pump water heater when replacing electric resistance equipment, or a whole-home energy monitor that reveals where electricity is going. Smart EV charging, load management, leak protection, irrigation controls, smart plugs, and occupancy-based lighting can also pay off, but only when the home, utility rate, equipment, and configuration are a good match.

This ranking treats “savings” carefully: lower energy or water use, lower charging costs, or a meaningful reduction in avoidable damage. Manufacturer “up to” claims are not guarantees, and a device that merely shifts consumption to another time is not necessarily reducing total energy use.

Quick ranking: the smart-home upgrades worth considering

Gadget Primary benefit Evidence Best fit Main caveat
ENERGY STAR smart thermostat Reduces HVAC runtime Strong Homes with inefficient schedules or frequent vacancy Compatibility and occupant behavior matter
Heat-pump water heater Reduces electric water-heating energy Strong, modeled Replacing electric resistance equipment Installation and electrical requirements
Smart leak detector and shutoff Reduces water waste and damage risk Conditional Homes with significant leak exposure Primary value is avoided loss, not predictable bill savings
Whole-home energy monitor Finds large or abnormal loads Moderate Homeowners who will act on the data Does not save automatically
Energy-monitoring smart plugs Measures and controls plug loads Moderate Long-running electronics and equipment Savings are usually modest
Time-of-use-aware EV charger Moves charging to cheaper periods Conditional EV owners with time-varying rates Rate-plan and utility integration required
Smart load-management system Coordinates major electrical loads Conditional Homes adding EVs, heat pumps, or electric appliances High installation cost
Smart irrigation controller Reduces overwatering Conditional Water-intensive landscapes Depends on zone setup and local weather
Occupancy-based lighting controls Stops lights running in empty rooms Conditional Homes with lights frequently left on Weak payback if the home already uses LEDs well

ENERGY STAR’s Smart Home Energy Management System criteria are a useful reality check. They focus on connected thermostats, lighting, plug-load monitoring, occupancy, time-of-use scheduling, and demand response—not simply whether a product has an app or voice control.

How to judge whether a gadget will save money

Before buying, apply five tests:

  1. Load size: Does it control HVAC, water heating, EV charging, irrigation, or another substantial load?
  2. Evidence: Is the claim supported by field data, ENERGY STAR certification, or a transparent measurement method?
  3. Automation: Will the device keep working without daily reminders?
  4. Compatibility: Does it work with the home’s wiring, plumbing, HVAC system, vehicle, utility, and rate plan?
  5. Net cost: Do likely savings exceed hardware, installation, permits, subscriptions, maintenance, and financing costs?

Also distinguish energy reduction from load shifting. Scheduling an EV to charge overnight may lower the bill on a time-of-use plan without reducing the vehicle’s total kilowatt-hours. A leak shutoff may prevent a catastrophic loss without producing a predictable monthly saving.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Smart Thermostat, Save money and energy, Works with Alexa and Ring
  • An Alexa thermostat - Amazon Smart Thermostat is an easy way to switch from a traditional thermostats for homes and help reduce energy usage.
  • Create comfort zones throughout your home by connecting to select Alexa devices to automatically adjust heating and cooling based on temperature readings or presence detection.
  • Save money and energy - After purchase, Amazon will send you an email with details about home thermostat rebates that may be available from energy providers in your area.
  • Save energy - According to EPA estimates, ENERGY STAR certified thermostats save an average of $90 on yearly energy bills.
  • Programmable thermostat and automatic control - Create your own home, away and sleep schedules, or have Alexa automatically control the temperature with Alexa+ advanced features.

1. ENERGY STAR smart thermostat

A smart thermostat is the strongest first purchase for many homes because heating and cooling are often the largest controllable energy loads. It saves by reducing unnecessary HVAC runtime through schedules, occupancy detection, remote adjustments, and—in some systems—utility demand response.

ENERGY STAR estimates that certified smart thermostats save about 8% of heating and cooling bills, or approximately $50 per year on average. That is an independent benchmark, not a promise for every home. Results vary with climate, equipment, insulation, occupancy, and how often occupants override the schedule.

ENERGY STAR certification is more useful than a generic “up to” statement because it incorporates field-based savings evidence and independent certification. By contrast, Google says its fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat can save up to 31%, while ecobee advertises savings of up to 26% for its Smart Thermostat Premium. Those are manufacturer claims under stated conditions, not typical guaranteed household results.

Good candidates

  • Homes using a manual thermostat or poor schedules.
  • Households that are away during predictable parts of the day.
  • Homes where heating and cooling dominate annual energy bills.

Check before buying

  • Verify compatibility with 24-volt wiring, staging, zoning, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and heat pumps.
  • Heat-pump owners should confirm auxiliary-heat behavior. Aggressive setbacks can trigger expensive resistance heat.
  • Electric baseboard, millivolt, proprietary communicating, and unusual zoned systems may require a different control.
  • Check whether schedules remain active when Wi-Fi or the manufacturer’s cloud service is unavailable.

Current examples include the Google Nest Learning Thermostat, fourth generation, listed at $239.99 on August 18, 2026, and the ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium, listed by ecobee at $259.99 on that date. Prices change, so verify them before purchase.

Verdict: Usually the best low-disruption energy upgrade when the existing thermostat is poorly programmed. It is a weaker purchase for a home that already has an efficient, well-managed HVAC schedule.

2. ENERGY STAR heat-pump water heater

A heat-pump water heater has far greater savings potential than a typical connected accessory. It uses heat from surrounding air rather than relying primarily on electric resistance elements, and connected models can support energy reporting, time-of-use operation, demand response, leak detection, and automatic shutoff.

ENERGY STAR estimates annual savings of $270 for a two-person household, $410 for three people, and $550 for four people compared with a standard electric water heater. Its example assumes electricity at $0.146 per kWh, a 13-year life, and a $1,503 incremental cost. The same estimates show modeled payback periods of 5.5, 3.7, and 2.7 years respectively.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are modeled estimates, not a guarantee. Local electricity prices, hot-water demand, installation cost, climate, fuel prices, rebates, and the existing water heater can change the result substantially.

Best installation opportunity

The strongest case is replacing an aging electric resistance tank, especially when a failure or planned renovation already justifies installation work. DOE lists a potential federal rebate of up to $1,750 for an eligible ENERGY STAR electric heat-pump water heater, but eligibility, funding, income rules, location rules, and program implementation vary. Check the DOE home-upgrade incentive information and local utility before counting on a rebate.

Installation issues

  • Many models require a 208/240-volt circuit, sometimes a 30-amp circuit; the exact product manual and local code control.
  • The unit needs adequate air volume and clearance, condensate drainage, and a suitable location.
  • The compressor and fan can produce noticeable noise.
  • Exhaust air is cooler, which may matter in a small mechanical room.
  • Compare first-hour rating and recovery performance with the household’s peak demand.
  • Connected demand-response features work only when the utility or energy-management platform supports them.

ENERGY STAR notes that suitable connected water heaters may shift roughly 1 kW during a demand-response event by preheating water. That is a program-dependent capability, not an automatic saving for every installation.

Verdict: The highest-potential “smart gadget” on this list when replacing electric resistance water heating. It is not a universal upgrade for gas-water-heater owners or spaces that cannot support the electrical and ventilation requirements.

3. Smart leak detector with automatic shutoff

A smart leak system is primarily an insurance and damage-prevention device. It can also reduce water waste by detecting continuous flow, running toilets, burst pipes, or appliance leaks, but it should not be sold as a guaranteed monthly bill reducer.

There are three common configurations:

  • Whole-home systems: installed on the main line and capable of closing a motorized valve.
  • Point sensors: placed under sinks, near water heaters, behind washing machines, and near sump pumps.
  • Alert-only systems: send notifications but cannot shut off water automatically.

Prioritize automatic shutoff, battery backup, reliable behavior during internet outages, adjustable flow sensitivity, a manual override, and a clear recovery process if the valve closes incorrectly. Check subscription costs and whether an insurer offers a discount; neither should be assumed.

ENERGY STAR lists leak detection and automatic cold-water shutoff among useful connected water-heater features. The same logic applies to standalone systems, but the financial value is usually the loss avoided by one prevented leak—not a predictable annual water saving.

Verdict: A high-priority risk-reduction purchase for homes with aging plumbing, vacation periods, water heaters near finished space, or valuable contents. Renters may need permission for a main-line installation.

4. Whole-home energy monitor

An energy monitor does not save energy by itself. Its job is to reveal which loads deserve attention: HVAC cycling, electric resistance heat, water-heater runtime, EV charging, pool equipment, pumps, and abnormal consumption.

ENERGY STAR’s SHEMS criteria include home-energy monitors and plug-load monitoring. Circuit-level monitoring is generally more useful than a single whole-home number because it can identify the actual source of a high bill.

Use it as a diagnostic project

  1. Establish a baseline over a comparable billing period.
  2. Identify the largest circuits and unexpected overnight loads.
  3. Change one schedule, appliance, or control at a time.
  4. Compare weather, occupancy, and billing periods before declaring success.

Solar households should confirm that the monitor distinguishes grid import, grid export, and solar production. Panel installation may require an electrician. Also check whether data remains available locally if the cloud service stops.

The main failure mode is the dashboard effect: the owner enjoys charts but never changes equipment or behavior.

Verdict: Buy one when the bill is mysterious or the home has several large electric loads and the owner is prepared to act on the data.

5. Energy-monitoring smart plugs and power strips

Smart plugs are inexpensive tools for measuring and switching smaller loads. They can help with entertainment centers, office equipment, aquarium equipment, pumps, chargers, and other devices that run longer than necessary.

The calculation is simple: watts ÷ 1,000 × hours used × electricity rate. For example, a 20-watt device left on continuously uses about 175 kWh per year. At $0.20 per kWh, that is about $35 annually before considering the plug’s own consumption and purchase cost. A 2-watt standby load is only about $3.50 per year at the same rate.

That is why measurement matters. A plug is worthwhile when it controls a meaningful, safe, long-running load—not merely because the product has an energy graph.

Safety limits

Do not use an ordinary smart plug for space heaters, dryers, ovens, large compressors, or other high-current loads unless the device is specifically rated for the appliance and its startup current. Do not interrupt power to refrigerators, freezers, medical equipment, networking hardware, or anything that must remain continuously operational.

ENERGY STAR’s connected-system criteria set a 1-watt maximum standby-power limit for the plug-load monitoring/control component in a certified package. This reinforces an important point: the control itself should not consume a substantial share of the energy it is meant to save.

Verdict: A low-cost measurement and automation tool, but rarely a major bill-cutting upgrade without a measured target load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Time-of-use-aware EV charger

A connected EV charger can lower charging costs by scheduling charging during cheaper periods, responding to utility events, or coordinating charging with solar production. The Wi-Fi connection itself saves nothing; the rate plan and charging behavior create the opportunity.

ENERGY STAR identifies EV chargers as suitable components of connected energy-management systems that coordinate time-of-use pricing and demand response.

Compare these features

  • J1772 or NACS compatibility.
  • Level 2 output and circuit requirements.
  • Hardwired versus plug-in installation.
  • Vehicle-side versus charger-side scheduling.
  • Utility integration and managed-charging enrollment.
  • Solar-surplus charging.
  • Load sharing with a heat pump, water heater, or electric range.
  • Subscription requirements and outdoor rating.

Before buying, check the utility’s residential rate schedule, the requirements for any managed-charging program, and whether the vehicle, charger, and utility platform interoperate. A bill credit, rebate, and one-time payment are different incentives.

For a simple estimate, multiply annual charging kWh by the difference between the peak and off-peak rates. Then subtract any charger, installation, subscription, and program costs. If the home has a flat electricity rate and no solar or demand-response benefit, a smart charger may provide convenience without meaningful bill savings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: Strong for EV owners with time-of-use pricing, solar, or utility incentives; unnecessary as a savings purchase for many flat-rate customers.

7. Smart electrical load-management system

Load-management equipment coordinates major electric loads rather than making any one appliance more efficient. Examples include EV load controllers, smart electrical panels, energy-management systems, and platforms that coordinate solar, batteries, water heaters, heat pumps, and appliances.

It may delay EV charging while a heat pump or range is operating, keep total demand below a service limit, or respond to utility events. Its biggest financial benefit may be avoiding an electrical-service or panel upgrade, not reducing total kilowatt-hours.

ENERGY STAR’s SHEMS framework includes occupancy automation, time-of-use control, plug-load management, connected water heaters, demand response, reporting, and consumer override controls. Certification describes capabilities and reporting; it does not guarantee a fixed dollar saving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should consider it

  • Homes adding an EV, heat pump, electric water heater, induction range, or battery.
  • Properties with limited electrical-service capacity.
  • Owners with solar, time-of-use rates, or demand-response programs.

Professional installation is essential. A smart panel cannot compensate for inadequate wiring, incorrect breakers, code violations, or poor equipment sizing. Verify what happens during an internet outage and whether manual controls remain available. ENERGY STAR’s framework emphasizes consumer override options for demand-response behavior.

Verdict: A system-level investment for electrically intensive homes—not a casual gadget for a small home with few major loads.

8. Smart irrigation controller

Weather- or soil-aware irrigation controllers can reduce overwatering by using rainfall, local weather, soil moisture, evapotranspiration, and seasonal adjustments. The main saving is water; electricity savings from reduced pumping and lower sewer charges may be secondary.

Look for rain and freeze skipping, separate schedules for lawn, planting beds, trees, and drip zones, flow monitoring, broken-line detection, and compatibility with the existing valve voltage and zone count. Confirm that the controller works under local watering restrictions and does not require a subscription for essential operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Site preparation matters more than the app. Broken sprinkler heads, badly arranged zones, excessive pressure, and poor soil will undermine any “smart” schedule. A controller replacing a fixed schedule in a hot, dry climate may prevent substantial waste; one installed on a carefully managed landscape may save very little.

Calculate the opportunity using measured gallons saved multiplied by local water and sewer rates. Do not use a universal savings percentage without knowing the climate, baseline schedule, landscape, and measurement method.

Verdict: A sensible water-saving upgrade for irrigation-heavy properties, especially where watering is still controlled by a fixed seasonal timer.

9. Occupancy-based smart lighting and switching

Smart lighting has two separate benefits. Replacing incandescent or halogen lamps with LEDs can reduce lighting energy. Occupancy or vacancy controls can stop lights from running in empty rooms. If the home already uses LEDs and occupants switch them off reliably, expensive smart bulbs may have a long or nonexistent payback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Occupancy sensors are most useful in garages, closets, bathrooms, utility rooms, and other spaces where lights are often forgotten. Vacancy switches require a person to turn the light on but switch it off automatically, reducing false activation. Smart switches are usually more practical than individual smart bulbs when one control operates several fixtures.

Check dimmer compatibility, neutral-wire requirements, sensor behavior around pets or stationary occupants, and local operation during an internet outage. ENERGY STAR includes connected lighting in its SHEMS minimum package, but that does not mean every connected bulb produces meaningful savings.

Verdict: Choose occupancy controls for known waste points. Do not buy premium color-changing bulbs expecting a large utility reduction.

Which gadget should you buy first?

  • HVAC is your largest controllable load: Start with an ENERGY STAR smart thermostat, after checking system compatibility.
  • You are replacing an electric resistance water heater: Compare an ENERGY STAR heat-pump water heater, installation costs, and available incentives.
  • You cannot explain the bill: Install a whole-home or circuit-level energy monitor before buying multiple controls.
  • You have an EV and time-of-use pricing: Use managed charging and confirm utility participation requirements.
  • You are worried about water damage: Choose a leak detector with automatic shutoff if plumbing installation is permitted.
  • You are adding several large electric loads: Get an electrician’s load calculation and consider load management.
  • Your landscape is overwatered: Repair irrigation hardware first, then consider a weather- or soil-aware controller.
  • Electronics stay on continuously: Measure them with appropriately rated smart plugs.
  • Lights are routinely left on: Install occupancy or vacancy switches in the problem rooms.

Rebates, installation, and total cost

Never treat a national incentive as automatically available. Before purchasing, check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Your ZIP code and utility territory.
  2. Whether the model is ENERGY STAR certified or otherwise eligible.
  3. Income, location, or equipment requirements.
  4. Whether installation must be performed by a participating contractor.
  5. Whether funding is still available on the purchase date.
  6. Whether federal, state, utility, and manufacturer incentives can be combined.
  7. Whether the benefit is a tax credit, point-of-sale rebate, bill credit, or one-time payment.

The DOE home-upgrade page explains that amounts and eligibility depend on the specific program and upgrade. Include permits, electrical work, plumbing, sensors, subscriptions, replacement parts, and maintenance in the payback calculation.

Use qualified professionals for 240-volt appliances, EV chargers, main-panel equipment, HVAC wiring, whole-home water valves, heat-pump water heaters, and irrigation pumps or valves. A connected product does not make unsafe installation acceptable.

Failure modes that can erase the savings

  • Rebound: A thermostat may encourage more aggressive comfort settings; an irrigation controller may water too often; convenient EV charging may increase charging frequency.
  • Wrong baseline: A smart thermostat adds little if the old thermostat already used an effective schedule.
  • Load shifting mistaken for efficiency: Cheaper nighttime charging changes cost, not necessarily total energy use.
  • Cloud dependence: Confirm that schedules, safety functions, and manual controls continue during Wi-Fi or account outages.
  • Privacy exposure: Review data retention, utility permissions, two-factor authentication, firmware support, and whether an abandoned cloud service would disable essential functions.
  • Bad compatibility: Incorrect HVAC staging, water-heater sizing, smart-plug ratings, or irrigation zone mapping can create waste or equipment problems.

How to measure whether the purchase worked

  1. Review the previous 12 months of energy and water bills.
  2. Identify the largest controllable load rather than the most interesting gadget.
  3. Record the baseline equipment, schedule, rates, and weather conditions.
  4. Confirm compatibility and incentives before ordering.
  5. Configure conservative schedules with safe manual overrides.
  6. Compare at least one comparable billing period after installation, adjusting for weather and occupancy.
  7. Keep the device only if measured savings, avoided risk, or avoided upgrade cost justify the total ownership cost.
