Resonance is a 59 m² temporary pavilion by Aru Ma- Architects and the winning entry in Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2026’s “Budget Bougie” Installation Programme Competition. Built from familiar construction materials, its design uses a timber frame, ropes and a limestone-weighted central core to make restraint itself the source of spatial richness. The installation opened on 10 September 2026 in public space outside the Estonian Museum of Architecture in Tallinn’s Rotermann district.
What is Resonance?
Resonance was selected from over 100 submissions from more than 30 countries, according to the Tallinn Architecture Biennale’s 2026 competition announcement. The “Budget Bougie” brief asked how innovation can emerge under constraint, limited resources and unfavourable budgets—and whether resourcefulness can create a space that feels refined or generous without relying on expensive finishes or abundant materials.

How the structure turns simple materials into an architectural idea
The project description presents the pavilion as a timber enclosure held in conversation with a central core. Ropes connect the timber walls to the centre, where a gabion filled with stacked limestone provides weight and tensions the rope system. The architects describe this core as an obelisk-like “tuning peg,” making the structure part of the project’s resonance metaphor.

What visitors are meant to experience
The design invites visitors to enter, sit quietly and attend to shifting light, Baltic wind, sound and the presence of materials. “Resonance” describes this intended sensory experience and the architectural instrument suggested by the tensioned structure.

The competition placed the installation within TAB 2026’s “How Much?” framework, which examines constraint, resources, budgets and architectural value. Resonance’s response is not that material choices or budgets cease to matter, but that spatial character can also come from how ordinary components are assembled and experienced.
Location, opening and project credits
The temporary pavilion was installed in public space in front of the Estonian Museum of Architecture in the Rotermann district of Tallinn, Estonia. The official biennale programme announcement gives its opening date as 10 September 2026.

The official TAB competition page identifies Aru Ma- Architects founders Cheng Hao Chung and Zhang Jie, with team members Cui Jiakai and Matteo Minnicelli. The project page additionally credits Zhang Shixuan on the design team and identifies Cheng Hao Chung as lead architect. The cited project and competition pages do not publish a construction budget, detailed material quantities, measured acoustic results or project-specific environmental performance figures.
