Residential wind turbines are not silent, and they do not universally outperform solar panels. Small wind can be a practical option where measured winds are strong, a tower can be safely sited, and local rules allow it. For many homes, rooftop solar is easier to assess and install; a site-specific comparison of annual energy, full project cost, and permitting is what determines the better fit.
Are residential wind turbines really silent?
No. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says that most modern residential small-to-medium turbines meeting certification requirements produce sound only slightly above ambient wind noise—less than 6 decibels above it in typical conditions. That is not a guarantee of silence: perceived sound depends on distance, background noise, atmospheric conditions, and topography. See DOE’s sound guidance.
DOE’s Small Wind Guidebook gives approximately 55 dB at 50 feet as an illustrative level for a typical 2-kW turbine. It is an example, not a rating that applies to every turbine or installation. Ask an installer for the specific model’s certified acoustic information and how the proposed setback and site affect sound at nearby homes.
Can you put a wind turbine on your roof?
It is usually a poor trade-off. A roof-mounted turbine can transmit vibration into the building, while turbulent airflow around a roof can reduce energy production and shorten turbine life. DOE also warns that vibration mitigation and lower output can make rooftop systems less cost-effective than tower-mounted turbines. Its small distributed wind FAQ explains these drawbacks.

A tower gives a turbine access to less obstructed wind, but it needs adequate space, suitable foundations and setbacks, and approval under local rules. A roof turbine should not be treated as an equivalent, compact substitute for a properly sited tower system.
How much wind does a property need?
For U.S. screening purposes, DOE describes at least one acre and an average annual wind speed of 4.0 m/s (9 mph) for typical stand-alone conditions, or 4.5 m/s (10 mph) for typical grid-connected conditions. These are general screening conditions, not universal thresholds, legal requirements, or a substitute for measuring the wind at the proposed turbine location and hub height.

Wind speed alone does not predict household output. DOE’s Small Wind Guidebook says annual energy estimates depend on the turbine’s power curve, wind distribution at the site, tower height, and micro-siting. Because wind power rises sharply with speed—the relationship includes wind speed cubed—small differences in the resource can have a large effect on production.
Wind turbine or solar panels for a house?
Compare what each system can produce at your property, rather than comparing a turbine’s nameplate rating with a panel system’s advertised capacity. Solar PV can suit a wider range of rooftop locations in NREL’s modeled U.S. residential baseline, while small wind depends heavily on a strong, usable wind resource and space for a tower. That does not establish a universal household winner.

Use the same comparison period and include the complete installed project cost for each option: equipment, labor, permits, electrical components, interconnection, maintenance, and any incentives. Account for storage or backup needs if the system must serve loads when its resource is unavailable.
What do published cost figures tell you?
The available figures are not directly comparable, because they describe different metrics, years, and scopes. DOE reports NLR’s modeled 2022 levelized cost of energy estimates for small distributed wind as $235/MWh for residential projects and $163/MWh for commercial projects. NREL’s 2024 Annual Technology Baseline reports a 2023 residential PV benchmark system price of $2.68/WDC. The wind values are energy costs; the PV value is a system-price benchmark, not an energy cost or a current quote. Neither set of figures establishes the cost of a particular home installation.

DOE’s Small Wind Guidebook also reports a historical capacity-weighted average of $5,120/kW for small-wind projects installed in 2021. That figure was based on 16 projects in three U.S. states with 396 kW of combined rated capacity, so it is a limited historical sample rather than a current installed-price estimate.

- Check the site before choosing equipment. Assess the wind resource at the intended hub height, usable space for a tower, nearby obstructions, and local zoning and setback rules.
- Request a project-specific energy estimate. Ask for the turbine’s certified power curve and expected annual kWh using the wind distribution, proposed tower height, and micro-siting at your property.
- Compare complete installed proposals. Include the turbine or panels, tower or mounting, electrical components, permits, interconnection, maintenance, and any applicable incentives. Avoid deciding on nameplate capacity alone.
- Match production to how the home uses power. Review household consumption and determine whether grid connection, batteries, backup generation, or a hybrid design is needed for the loads you want to serve.
- Verify who will install and service it. Check certification, warranty terms, maintenance requirements, and the installer’s ability to support the system locally.
What the global renewable-energy trend does—and does not—show
Solar is adding capacity faster worldwide, but that market trend does not settle a homeowner’s choice. The International Energy Agency estimated that global renewable capacity additions were around 700 GW in 2024; solar PV made up more than three-quarters and wind 17%. The agency’s Global Energy Review 2025 reports those estimated figures, which may be revised.

The IEA also reported that global solar PV and wind capacity more than doubled between 2018 and 2023, while their share of electricity generation almost doubled. Those are system-wide trends, not evidence that either technology will produce more or cost less at a specific house. Local resource, siting, project scope, and rules remain decisive.
Could a home use both wind and solar?
Yes, where both resources and the project economics support it. DOE describes wind combined with PV and storage as an option for residential microgrids. A hybrid can draw on different generation profiles, but it still needs a site assessment, compatible equipment, and a plan for storage or grid backup. The IEA notes that integrating solar and wind more broadly also requires flexibility, grid improvements, storage, and demand response; that system-level point does not guarantee a hybrid will pay off at an individual home.
