Resetting the Filter Warning on Your Samsung Refrigerator: A Comprehensive Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On most Samsung refrigerators, you can reset the filter warning by pressing and holding the model’s filter-reset control for about three seconds. The exact control varies: some models use Filter Reset, Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water; Family Hub models use a touchscreen menu; and some older refrigerators require a separate sequence.

Replace and correctly install the filter before resetting the timer. A reset only starts a new replacement countdown—it does not restore an old filter or repair a leak, poor water flow, or damaged filter housing.

Quick reset guide by Samsung refrigerator type

Refrigerator controls Reset method
Standard control panel Wake the display, then press and hold Filter Reset (3 sec). If that label is absent, check Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water.
Arrow-button model Open More Options, select Filter Reset, and follow the display prompts.
Family Hub Home screen → Apps → Fridge Manager → Fridge Settings → Water Filter → Reset → Proceed.
Older RF4289 or RSG309 Use the legacy touchscreen procedure described below.
Filterless RS70F, RS80F, or RS90F Do not buy a filter just to silence the warning. Check Samsung’s software-update and alarm-dismissal instructions for affected units.

These are model-family instructions, not universal button combinations. If your panel differs, use the refrigerator’s exact model number to find its manual through Samsung Support.

What the filter warning means

The red, orange, blinking, or “Replace Filter” message normally indicates that the refrigerator’s filter timer has reached its replacement interval. Samsung generally recommends replacing the filter every six months, although actual useful life can vary with water quality, household usage, and flow rate. The indicator is generally a timer rather than a test of the cartridge’s chemical contaminant load. See Samsung’s filter replacement and reset guidance.

Replace the cartridge sooner if water flow declines significantly, even when the warning has not appeared. Resetting the indicator without replacing an overdue filter can create a misleading new schedule.

Before resetting: install the correct filter

1. Identify the refrigerator

Find the full refrigerator model number on the appliance label, documentation, or support screen. Also note whether the refrigerator has a standard panel, arrow buttons, Family Hub, or an older RF4289 or RSG309 touchscreen.

Use Samsung’s model-based filter finder, or compare the part number printed on the existing cartridge. Common filter families listed in Samsung’s U.S. guide include HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1, but they are not interchangeable across every Samsung refrigerator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Shut off water and relieve pressure

  1. Turn off the refrigerator’s water supply.
  2. Dispense water until the flow stops.
  3. Remove the old cartridge.

Relieving pressure makes the filter easier to remove and reduces the chance of forcing the cartridge against the housing.

3. Install the replacement cartridge

For HAF-CIN and HAF-QIN, rotate the old filter counterclockwise to unlock it and pull it out. Remove the protective cap from the new cartridge, insert it, and turn it clockwise until locked. Align the lock symbol with the indicator line.

For HAFCU1, twist the old filter left to unlock it, remove it, insert the replacement, and twist it right to secure it. Align the notch with the arrow on the housing.

  • Note: This product is square, not round. Replacement for DA97-17376B (HAF-QIN), not compatible with DA29-00020B (HAF-CIN). The Waterspecialist refrigerator water filter features filtration performance is comparable to the original brand. It is also certified by authority NSF 42 and 372. Far different from generic brand, Waterspecialist only adopts superior coconut shell carbon block to improve taste and odor.
  • Great filtration: Waterspecialist refrigerator filters can reduce many harmful substances in water including heavy metals, mercury, chlorine, odor, THM, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), particles, copper, cadmium, chromium, and all other major impurities. This has been tested and proven by an independent third-party laboratory. While the impurities are reduced, every beneficial mineral in your water is kept, ensuring that your body functions properly.
  • Premium filter material: Waterspecialist selected BPA-free and food-grade filter housing that passed NSF 372 certification for lead-free filtration. We also adopt natural coconut shell carbon block that contains larger surface area and more micropores. Thus, the filter cartridge can efficiently reduce chlorine, bad taste and odor.
  • Perfect fit: Waterspecialist combines precision measurement technology to produce refrigerator filters with exquisite engineering designs, unlike inferior replacement filters that can cause water leakage issues. Also, Waterspecialist saves you time and hassle by offering tool-free refrigerator filter replacements.
  • Fresh-tasting water: The natural coconut shell carbon block absorbs more impurities. The Waterspecialist refrigerator filter provides you a unique filtration experience.

Do not force a cartridge that will not lock. Check the part number, alignment, protective cap, and housing for a broken piece of the previous filter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Restore water and flush the system

Turn the water supply back on and flush the new filter before relying on the dispenser. Flushing removes trapped air and loose carbon particles that can temporarily affect flow, taste, or odor.

Follow the quantity specified in your model manual. Samsung Canada’s instructions specify about seven minutes, or approximately 10–12 large glasses, while Samsung’s U.S. guidance for HAFCU1 refers to several gallons. Continue until the water runs clear and its taste is normal. If an unusual taste or odor remains, Samsung’s Canadian guidance suggests dispensing another 2–3 gallons.

Exact reset instructions

Standard control panels

  1. Wake the display if it is dark.
  2. Look for Filter Reset (3 sec).
  3. If it is not labeled separately, check whether Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water provides the reset function.
  4. Press and hold the relevant control for approximately three seconds.
  5. Release it when the light turns off, changes back to its normal color, or the filter status returns to normal.

Some models require two buttons to be pressed simultaneously. The model-specific manual takes priority over this general procedure.

Family Hub refrigerators

On Family Hub models, use:

Home screen → Apps → Fridge Manager → Fridge Settings → Water Filter → Reset → Proceed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This resets the warning and starts the new filter timer. Family Hub may display a Buy Filter option, but verify compatibility by model number before ordering.

Models with arrow buttons

Wake the display, use the arrow keys to open More Options, and select Filter Reset. The exact labels can vary by model and software version, so do not treat this path as universal.

Older RF4289 and RSG309 refrigerators

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Water Filter.
  3. Tap Next three times until page 4/4 appears.
  4. Touch and hold Reset the water filter until the status changes.
  5. When Filter Replaced appears and disappears, tap Save.

This procedure applies specifically to the named older models.

How to confirm the reset worked

Depending on the refrigerator, confirmation may be any of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The red or orange warning light turns off or returns to its normal state.
  • The filter icon stops blinking.
  • The display no longer says “Replace Filter.”
  • Family Hub shows the new filter status.
  • The dispenser operates normally after flushing.

Samsung refrigerators do not all use the same colors, wording, or confirmation screen.

When the warning will not reset

Symptom Likely cause What to try
Light remains on Wrong control, unawakened display, touchscreen model, or two-button sequence Confirm the model number, check for Filter Reset (3 sec), and use the manual’s exact sequence.
Filter will not lock Pressure, wrong cartridge, misalignment, protective cap, or damaged housing Shut off water, relieve pressure, verify the cartridge, and inspect the housing. Never force it.
Water flow is slow Air, clogged filter, closed valve, kinked line, or incomplete installation Confirm the filter is locked, open the supply valve fully, remove kinks, and flush the system.
Water tastes like carbon Insufficient flushing or air in the line Dispense additional water, following the model’s instructions.
Water leaks around the filter Loose installation, damaged seal, incompatible cartridge, or housing damage Stop dispensing, shut off the water, inspect and reinstall the cartridge, and seek service if leaking continues.
Warning appears without a filter Filterless model or documented software issue Verify the refrigerator’s design before buying a cartridge and check Samsung’s filterless-model guidance.

HAF-CU1 locking-design issue

Samsung documents a HAF-CU1 housing issue involving older two-rib and newer three-rib locking designs. Samsung says the newer design can still fit older refrigerator models but may require fully opening the locking mechanism.

Samsung’s suggested workaround is to temporarily reinstall the old filter, press it into the housing, turn it left as far as possible to fully open the lock, remove it, and then install the new filter. If the replacement still will not lock, stop and contact service rather than forcing the housing. See Samsung’s filter-fit troubleshooting guide.

Filterless refrigerators showing a warning

Some refrigerators are designed to operate without a water filter. Do not purchase a cartridge merely to clear an alert on a filterless model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung’s UK notice identifies a software-related filter alert affecting certain RS70F, RS80F, and RS90F refrigerators manufactured before July 2025 in some markets. For affected units, Samsung recommends connecting the refrigerator to SmartThings and updating its software, followed by the documented control-panel method for dismissing the alarm. Market, model, and software applicability must be verified on Samsung’s filterless-model support page.

When not to reset the warning

  • The cartridge is still installed and overdue.
  • You have not confirmed that the replacement fits the refrigerator.
  • There is an active leak.
  • The filter housing appears cracked or damaged.
  • The message is an error code rather than a filter reminder.
  • The refrigerator has a separate cooling, dispenser, or inlet-valve problem.

Do not unplug the refrigerator as a substitute for a filter reset. A power reset is different from resetting the filter timer, and Samsung generally does not recommend a general power reset except in specific troubleshooting, moving, or cleaning situations. See Samsung’s power-reset guidance.

Choosing a replacement filter

Start with the model number, not the shape of the cartridge or the warning light. Samsung’s official pages list HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 products, but the correct choice depends on the refrigerator. Samsung also warns that third-party filters may cause leaks, damage, or fit problems; that is the manufacturer’s position, so verify any alternative carefully.

Samsung states that its filters meet NSF/ANSI 42, 53, and 401. Those standards do not mean every filter removes every contaminant equally in every installation. Consult the specific cartridge documentation for its stated claims.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For model verification, use Samsung’s filter finder or the appropriate regional Samsung catalog. Official product pages include HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1. Availability and prices change, so confirm current details before ordering.

When to contact Samsung service

Arrange service if the filter housing is cracked, a filter fragment is stuck, the cartridge continues to leak after correct installation, the dispenser remains faulty, or Samsung’s fit workaround does not solve the problem. Use Samsung Support with the full model number and, if possible, photos of the cartridge and housing.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
