Choose based on the task and your cookware: the FDA Food Code advises nonscoring or nonscratching utensils with cookware coated in perfluorocarbon resin, so metal may not suit those pans. “Non-toxic” is a useful reader-facing shorthand, not a certification that any material is categorically risk-free.
Why some people are replacing black plastic utensils
Studies have found brominated flame retardants in some tested plastic utensils, and one study observed transfer of these compounds to hot cooking oil in simulated experiments. That is a reason to check what you use, but it does not establish that every black plastic utensil is contaminated or that a particular utensil has harmed its user.
What the utensil studies found
A 2018 study examined 96 plastic kitchen utensils purchased in the UK. Bromine was detected in 31 of 69 utensils purchased before 2011 and 3 of 27 purchased after 2011. In simulated cooking experiments on selected utensils, the researchers reported an average 20% transfer of brominated flame retardants to hot cooking oil. The transfer result applies to those selected test items and experimental conditions, not to typical use of every utensil. Turner et al., 2018
What the U.S. product screening found
A 2024 study screened 203 black plastic household products sold in the United States, including kitchenware and food-contact items. Twenty products had bromine above 50 parts per million. The study abstract also reports a median estimated BDE-209 intake of 34,700 nanograms per day from contaminated kitchen utensils. That is the study’s exposure estimate, not a measurement of an individual reader’s dose or a settled assessment of personal risk. Liu et al., 2024

Which utensils make practical replacements?
Poison Control suggests wood or metal cooking utensils as alternatives to black plastic. Neither option is best for every task or every pan; cookware compatibility and the specific product’s material and care instructions matter. Poison Control’s guidance

How to choose for your cookware
- Identify the pan’s surface. Check the cookware maker’s instructions to see whether the pan has a coating and which utensils it allows.
- For perfluorocarbon-resin-coated cookware, choose a nonscoring utensil. The FDA Food Code 2026 specifies nonscoring or nonscratching utensils for multiuse kitchenware with this coating. A metal tool may therefore be unsuitable. FDA Food Code 2026
- Match the utensil to the task. Select wood or metal according to what you are cooking and the utensil’s intended use.
- Read the item’s own material and care instructions. Do not infer construction or care needs from a utensil’s color or broad category.
What “food-contact safe” and “non-toxic” do—and do not—mean
The FDA evaluates food-contact materials for their intended conditions of use, including migration to food and toxicological safety. Authorization is specific to an intended use; it is not a blanket endorsement of every similar-looking item or uses outside those conditions. FDA food-contact substances overview

FDA consumer guidance says: “Current scientific evidence does not demonstrate that levels of microplastics or nanoplastics detected in foods pose a risk to human health.” That statement concerns microplastics and nanoplastics detected in food. On the evidence available here, no utensil material should be described as categorically “non-toxic” or chemical-free. The practical choice is to use an alternative suited to the cooking task, follow cookware guidance, and verify the particular item’s material and care information.
