34 Renter-Friendly Apartment Upgrades That Look Custom and Still Move Out Clean

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A rental can feel finished, personal, and well-built without becoming a fight over the security deposit. The trick is knowing the difference between decoration, alteration, and work that touches building systems. On our job sites, we think in terms of surfaces, structure, moisture, fire safety, and reversibility. That same thinking helps renters make smarter decorating choices.

The best apartment decorating ideas usually fall into one of three lanes: changes that leave no mark, changes that might leave minor repair work, and changes that need written landlord approval before you buy materials. Use this guide as a practical field list: what it costs in 2026, what can go wrong, and how to make the space feel like home without creating avoidable move-out damage.

Start With a Lease-Safe Decorating Plan

Before buying wallpaper, shelves, or a ceiling fan, read the alteration section of your lease. Written permission is the line between a harmless upgrade and a deposit dispute. Painting, drilling, swapping light fixtures, mounting heavy shelving, changing locks, replacing flooring, modifying plumbing, and any electrical work should be treated as approval-required unless your lease clearly says otherwise.

Create a simple move-out bin before you start. Put original cabinet knobs, switch plates, curtain hardware, fixture parts, screws, paint labels, spare peel-and-stick material, wall patch, touch-up tools, and dated before photos in one box. That box can save hours and hundreds of dollars later.

Command 15 & 10 lb Assorted Picture Hanging Strips, 28 Pairs (56 Strips)
  • VARIETY PACK OF PICTURE STRIPS: One package of the Command Picture Hanging Strips Variety Pack includes 12 Pairs of 10 lb and 16 Pairs of 15 lb White Command Picture Hanging Strips (56 Strips total).
  • WORKS ON A VARIETY OF SMOOTH SURFACES: Wall hanging strips work on a variety of smooth surfaces, including painted walls, finished wood, painted concrete cinder blocks, laminate and tiles so you can create a festive winter wonderland in your space
  • SURFACE PREP: Clean the desired surface with rubbing alcohol to remove grime and dust to allow the no damage wall hangers to bond to the surface; the indoor temperature must be between 50 degrees Fahrenheit and 105 degrees Fahrenheit
  • USAGE TIPS: Wait seven days after painting before using the Command Picture Hangers to allow paint to cure; do not hang over beds or on wallpaper
  • EASY CLEAN REMOVAL: Lightly hold the top of the removable adhesive strips and slowly pull straight down towards the floor to remove Christmas decorations and prevent damage of walls and surfaces

Also test adhesives. Peel-and-stick products are not automatically deposit-proof. Paint age, wall texture, humidity, primer quality, and sun exposure all affect removal. Test in a hidden spot for 48 to 72 hours, then remove slowly with low heat. If paint lifts during the test, do not install that product across a full wall.

Lease-risk label What it means Typical examples
No-permission-likely Usually freestanding, tension-mounted, or removable with no holes Rugs, lamps, slipcovers, plants, tension rods, removable window film
Ask-first May leave holes, adhesive residue, color changes, or altered hardware Paint, shelves, peel-and-stick backsplash, drilled curtain rods, cabinet pulls
Pro-only Touches electrical, plumbing, structure, tile, exterior walls, or life-safety systems Ceiling fans, hardwired lights, new outlets, tile backsplash, built-ins

Under $50 Apartment Decorating Ideas

1. Change the Bulbs Before You Change the Room

Cost: $10 to $40 per room. Risk: no-permission-likely.

Bad lighting makes even good furniture look temporary. Use warm white bulbs around 2700K to 3000K in living rooms and bedrooms, and slightly brighter 3000K to 3500K bulbs in kitchens and work areas. Match bulb color within the same room so the space feels intentional. Check the fixture label for maximum wattage and use LED bulbs to keep heat low.

2. Add a Table Lamp Where the Ceiling Light Fails

Cost: $25 to $50. Risk: no-permission-likely.

Many apartments rely on one overhead fixture. A lamp at sofa height or bedside height creates a second lighting layer and makes the room feel furnished instead of merely occupied. Keep cords along baseboards with removable cord clips. Do not run cords under rugs, through door openings, or anywhere they can overheat or get pinched.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Use Pillow Covers Instead of New Pillows

Cost: $15 to $40 for two to four covers. Risk: no-permission-likely.

Pillow covers are one of the cheapest ways to change a color scheme. Use 20-by-20-inch covers on existing 18-by-18-inch inserts for a fuller look. Choose washable cotton, linen blends, or performance fabric if the sofa gets daily use.

4. Put a Runner in the Kitchen

Cost: $25 to $50. Risk: no-permission-likely.

A 2-by-6-foot or 2-by-8-foot washable runner softens rental kitchens with vinyl or old tile floors. Use a thin non-slip rug pad that is safe for the flooring type. Avoid rubber backings on some vinyl floors because they can discolor the surface over time.

5. Dress Open Storage With Matching Bins

Cost: $20 to $50. Risk: no-permission-likely.

Open shelves look cleaner when small items disappear into matching bins. Measure shelf depth first. Common cube shelves are roughly 11 to 13 inches deep, while closet shelves may be 12 to 16 inches deep. Leave at least 1 inch of clearance so bins slide without scraping walls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Add Removable Window Film

Cost: $15 to $45 per window. Risk: no-permission-likely to ask-first depending on lease.

Static-cling privacy film is useful for street-facing windows and bathrooms. It adds privacy while preserving natural light. Do not cover bedroom egress windows in a way that prevents escape or makes the latch hard to find. Keep film clear of alarm sensors if your unit has them.

7. Swap Shower Curtain, Liner, and Hooks

Cost: $25 to $50. Risk: no-permission-likely.

A fabric shower curtain, mildew-resistant liner, and metal hooks can make an old bathroom feel cleaner immediately. Use a liner that hangs inside the tub and dries open after showers. Moisture is the enemy in rental bathrooms, so do not hide damaged grout, mold, or soft drywall behind decorative products.

8. Style a Drop Zone by the Door

Cost: $20 to $50. Risk: no-permission-likely.

A tray, small bench, shoe rack, and key bowl turn the entry into a working zone. In tight apartments, keep the walking path at least 30 inches wide where possible. Do not block the main exit door, electrical panel, thermostat, sprinkler head, or smoke alarm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Use Battery Puck Lights Inside Cabinets

Cost: $15 to $45. Risk: no-permission-likely.

Battery puck lights work well inside deep cabinets, bookcases, and closets. Use removable adhesive pads only after testing. In kitchens, keep lights away from steam and direct heat unless the product is rated for that location.

10. Frame Larger Art Instead of Many Tiny Pieces

Cost: $25 to $50 per frame for budget options. Risk: no-permission-likely to ask-first.

One 24-by-36-inch print often looks more finished than a scatter of small frames. Use removable picture strips within their weight rating, usually listed per pair or per set. For heavier frames, ask before using anchors. Never hang glass-framed art above a bed with undersized adhesive strips.

Rank #2
Command 15 lb Large Picture Hanging Strips 14 Pairs (28 Strips), Damage-Free Hanging Picture Hangers, No Tools Wall Hanger for Home Decor, White Adhesive
  • Strips
  • MAXIMUM FRAME SIZE 24 X 36 INCHES: One package includes 14 pairs (28 strips total) of the Command Large Picture Hanging Strips; four wall adhesive strip pairs hold 16 pounds; maximum frame of 24 x 36 inches
  • WORKS ON A VARIETY OF SMOOTH SURFACES: Wall hanging strips work on a variety of smooth surfaces, including painted walls, finished wood, painted concrete cinder blocks, laminate, glass, metal and tiles
  • SURFACE PREP: Clean the desired surface with rubbing alcohol to remove grime and dust to allow the no damage wall hangers to bond to the surface; the indoor temperature must be between 5 degrees Fahrenheit and 15 degrees Fahrenheit
  • USAGE TIPS: Wait seven days after painting before using the Command Picture Hangers to allow paint to cure; do not hang over beds or on wallpaper; do not use the wall hanging strips to hang valuable items

11. Add Plants Where They Can Actually Survive

Cost: $10 to $50. Risk: no-permission-likely.

Plants soften hard apartment finishes, but water damage is real. Use saucers, cork mats, or waterproof trays under every pot. Keep planters off wood windowsills if condensation collects there. For low light, choose pothos, snake plant, ZZ plant, or a convincing artificial plant rather than fighting the room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

$50 to $250 Apartment Decorating Ideas

12. Upgrade the Main Area Rug

Cost: $80 to $250 for many 5-by-7 or 8-by-10 options. Risk: no-permission-likely.

An area rug is usually the biggest reversible visual change in a rental. In a living room, a 5-by-7 rug often looks too small unless the apartment is compact. An 8-by-10 rug usually lets the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug, which makes the furniture layout feel planned. Use a rug pad to reduce movement and protect flooring.

13. Use Tension-Rod Curtains

Cost: $35 to $150 per window with ready-made panels. Risk: no-permission-likely.

Tension rods are the lower-risk alternative to drilled curtain rods. Basic ready-made curtains commonly run about $25 to $100 per window, depending on fabric and length. Hang panels high inside the opening when possible, and choose 84-inch, 96-inch, or 108-inch lengths based on ceiling height. If the rod needs drilling, the project moves into ask-first territory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

14. Install Plug-In Sconces

Cost: $50 to $200 per fixture. Risk: ask-first if screwed to wall.

Plug-in sconces bring the look of built-in lighting without wiring. They work well beside beds, over reading chairs, and near desks. Mount only into studs or proper anchors, and ask permission first if your lease restricts wall holes. Cord covers can be painted only if paint is allowed.

15. Try a Removable Wallpaper Accent Wall

Cost: $100 to $400 or more for many accent walls. Risk: ask-first.

Removable wallpaper can be excellent on smooth, clean, fully cured paint. It is less reliable on textured walls, damp walls, fresh paint, or chalky older paint. Budget wallpaper may be under $2 per square foot, while premium removable rolls can push a single wall into the $100 to $400 range after pattern waste. Order 10% to 15% extra for matching and repairs.

16. Add Peel-and-Stick Backsplash Carefully

Cost: $4 to $30 per square foot for many peel-and-stick materials. Risk: ask-first.

A backsplash can visually rescue a dated rental kitchen, but adhesive near heat, steam, and grease is risky. Use only products rated for kitchens, keep required clearance from ranges, and do not install over loose paint, mold, damaged drywall, or failing grout. Permanent tile is a different category: professional backsplash installation commonly runs $15 to $40 per square foot, while tile installation estimates can reach about $28.31 to $49.78 per square foot. For renters, permanent tile needs written approval.

17. Swap Cabinet Hardware and Keep Every Original Screw

Cost: $30 to $150 for many kitchens. Risk: ask-first.

Cabinet pulls are a high-impact change if you use the existing holes. Measure center-to-center spacing, commonly 3 inches, 3-3/4 inches, 5 inches, or 128 millimeters. Do not drill new holes without permission. Bag each original pull with its screws and label the room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

18. Use a Freestanding Bookcase as an Architectural Element

Cost: $80 to $250. Risk: no-permission-likely, ask-first if anchored.

A tall bookcase gives a plain wall depth and storage. The safety issue is tip-over risk. Tall furniture, dressers, bookcases, and TVs should be anchored where allowed, especially in homes with children. Because anchoring penetrates the wall, ask first and use the correct fastener for drywall, plaster, masonry, or studs.

Rank #3
Command 15 lb Large Picture Hanging Strips 28 Pairs (56 Strips), Damage-Free Hanging Picture Hangers, No Tools Wall Hanger for Home Decor, White Adhesive
  • MAXIMUM FRAME SIZE 24 X 36 INCHES: One package includes 28 pairs (56 strips total) of the Command Large Picture Hanging Strips; four wall adhesive strip pairs hold 16 pounds; maximum frame of 24 x 36 inches

19. Add a Folding Screen or Open Room Divider

Cost: $70 to $220. Risk: no-permission-likely.

Room dividers help studio apartments create a sleeping zone, office corner, or dressing area. Keep them stable and out of exit paths. Do not block HVAC returns, windows needed for emergency escape, sprinkler heads, or smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

20. Replace a Basic Mirror With a Leaning Mirror

Cost: $80 to $250. Risk: ask-first if secured to wall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A large mirror reflects light and makes a small apartment feel larger. A 24-by-65-inch leaning mirror works in many bedrooms and entries. Secure it if there is any chance it can tip. Adhesive pads are not enough for heavy mirrors; use proper anti-tip hardware with landlord approval.

21. Use Slipcovers to Reset Old Furniture

Cost: $60 to $200. Risk: no-permission-likely.

If the apartment is furnished or your sofa has seen better years, a fitted slipcover is cheaper than replacement. Measure sofa width, cushion style, and arm shape before ordering. Washable fabric matters more than a perfect catalog photo.

22. Add Acoustic Panels Disguised as Art

Cost: $80 to $250. Risk: ask-first if mounted.

Hard floors, bare walls, and concrete ceilings make rentals noisy. Fabric-wrapped acoustic panels or felt wall panels can reduce echo in a work-from-home setup. Use freestanding panels where possible. Adhesive felt tiles can damage paint, so test before committing to a full wall.

23. Build a Better Bed Wall

Cost: $75 to $250. Risk: no-permission-likely to ask-first.

A headboard, two lamps, matching nightstands, and layered bedding make a bedroom feel complete. If you cannot attach a headboard to the wall, use a bed-frame-mounted or freestanding headboard. Keep at least 24 inches of walking clearance on the main side of the bed when the room allows it.

24. Use Closed Storage in Small Apartments

Cost: $60 to $250. Risk: no-permission-likely.

Closed storage calms a small room faster than more open shelving. Look for cabinets on slim legs, storage benches, lidded baskets, and nesting tables. Furniture that exposes more floor area usually makes the room feel larger than blocky pieces sitting flat on the floor.

$250+ Apartment Decorating Ideas

25. Paint a Room Only With Written Permission

Cost: $100 to $400 for common DIY supplies; about $200 to $2,000 per room professionally, with many professional paint jobs priced around $2 to $6 per square foot. Risk: ask-first.

Paint can transform a rental, but it is one of the easiest ways to lose deposit money. Get written approval for the color, sheen, areas included, and whether you must restore the original color at move-out. Keep the paint label and take photos after completion. Dark colors, high ceilings, trim work, patching, primer, and multiple coats raise cost fast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

26. Hire Out Curtain Rod Installation for Heavy Drapes

Cost: simple handyman installs may run about $65 to $150 per window before premium rods or custom drapery; broader installed rod estimates start around $164 to $420 per rod. Risk: ask-first.

Drilled curtain rods look cleaner than tension rods and allow heavier fabrics, but they leave holes. For wide windows, use a center support bracket. For drywall, anchors must match the load. For plaster, masonry, or metal studs, the fastener choice changes. Ask before drilling into exterior walls, concrete, tile, or anything that may be part of a fire-rated assembly.

27. Install Custom Window Treatments

Cost: about $50 to $600 per window nationally for many curtain projects including curtain cost, hardware, and installation; custom work can run higher. Risk: ask-first.

Custom shades or drapery can make an apartment look finished, especially in units with odd window sizes. The downside is portability. Inside-mount shades cut for one window may not fit your next home. For renters, spend more on fabric panels you can take with you and less on custom hardware unless you plan to stay several years.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

28. Add a Modular Closet System

Cost: $250 to $900+ depending on size and material. Risk: ask-first if wall-mounted.

Rank #4
Command Small (5 lb) Picture Hanging Strips, 18 Pairs (36 Strips)
  • MAXIMUM FRAME SIZE 8 X 10 INCHES: One package includes 18 pairs (36 strips total) of the Command Small Picture Hanging Strips; four wall adhesive strip pairs hold 4 pounds; maximum frame of 8 x 10 inches
  • USAGE TIPS: Wait seven days after painting before using the Command Picture Hangers to allow paint to cure; do not hang over beds or on wallpaper; do not use the wall hanging strips to hang valuable items
  • EASY CLEAN REMOVAL: Lightly hold the top of the removable adhesive strips and slowly pull straight down towards the floor to remove and prevent damage of walls and surfaces

A closet system can change daily life more than a decorative accent. Freestanding garment racks and drawer towers are the lowest-risk option. Wall-mounted rails, cleats, and shelves need approval because they add holes and carry load. Keep shelf spans reasonable; many budget shelves sag when loaded with books, tools, or stacked denim.

29. Upgrade With Peel-and-Stick Flooring Only in the Right Place

Cost: about $1 to $5 per square foot for many budget DIY vinyl tiles, with premium products higher. Risk: ask-first.

Peel-and-stick flooring can work in a closet, entry, or low-moisture nook. It is riskier in bathrooms, laundry areas, and kitchens unless the product is rated for moisture and the lease allows it. Do not trap moisture over damaged flooring. Do not cover loose tiles, soft subfloor, or active leaks. Removal can leave adhesive residue, so get approval in writing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

30. Use Freestanding Kitchen Storage Instead of New Cabinets

Cost: $250 to $800. Risk: no-permission-likely, ask-first if anchored.

A pantry cabinet, baker’s rack, or rolling island adds function without touching the apartment’s cabinets. Keep rolling islands from blocking appliance doors or the kitchen work triangle. If the piece is tall or top-heavy, anchoring is safer, but wall penetration should be approved.

31. Swap a Light Fixture the Right Way

Cost: often $150 to $500+ depending on fixture and labor. Risk: pro-only.

A hardwired fixture swap is not a cosmetic-only project. It involves electrical connections, box support, grounding, and sometimes ceiling patching. Renters should get landlord approval and use a licensed electrician where required. Save the original fixture, canopy, screws, wire nuts, and mounting bracket for move-out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

32. Install a Ceiling Fan Only When the Box Is Rated for It

Cost: roughly $250 to $700 typical total for many ceiling fan installations including fan, wiring, labor, and reinforcement; new wiring can push costs much higher. Risk: pro-only.

A ceiling fan cannot be hung from a standard light box unless that box is fan-rated. The fan creates movement and load that a basic fixture box may not handle. This is written-approval work and usually electrician work. In some buildings, management will require their own contractor.

33. Commission Built-In-Looking Freestanding Pieces

Cost: $500 to $2,500+ depending on size and finish. Risk: no-permission-likely to ask-first.

If you want a custom look without permanent carpentry, use freestanding wardrobes, media units, or modular shelves trimmed visually with baskets and panels rather than attached to the building. True built-ins, scribed trim, floor fastening, and wall fastening need approval. Freestanding pieces are easier to move, sell, or reuse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

34. Refresh the Balcony or Patio Without Violating Rules

Cost: $100 to $700. Risk: no-permission-likely to ask-first.

Outdoor rugs, folding furniture, planters, and battery lanterns can make a balcony usable. Check rules on grills, rail planters, wind screens, string lights, and water drainage. Do not attach anything to railings that can fall. Avoid candles near curtains, cushions, dry plants, or other combustible decor.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

DIY is a good fit for freestanding decor, textiles, lamps, furniture layout, small storage improvements, removable window film, tension rods, and basic hardware swaps using existing holes. These projects usually need basic tools, one afternoon, and careful measuring.

Ask before you DIY anything that drills into walls, changes color, uses strong adhesive, or changes a fixture. That includes shelves, curtain rods, wallpaper, backsplash panels, peel-and-stick flooring, cabinet hardware that needs new holes, and any heavy wall-mounted item.

A rental is not the place to guess about wiring, load paths, water sealing, or code clearances.

Safety and Code Notes Renters Should Not Skip

Decor should never block required exits, bedroom egress windows, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, sprinkler heads, HVAC returns, electrical panels, or outlets. Keep furniture clear of windows that may be needed for emergency escape. Do not place tall storage where it narrows the only path to the door.

Anchor tall furniture where allowed. Dressers, bookcases, wardrobes, and TVs can tip, and inexpensive anchor kits provide real safety value. Because they usually require screws into the wall or furniture, get permission and use the correct fasteners.

Be careful with candles and string lights. Keep flame away from curtains, paper decor, bedding, faux greenery, and dried arrangements. Use battery candles where possible. For plug-in lighting, do not overload power strips or hide cords under rugs.

Moisture deserves special attention in kitchens and bathrooms. Do not cover mold, cracked grout, swollen trim, soft drywall, or active leaks with decorative products. Report the condition first. Covering damage can make the problem worse and may shift blame toward the tenant.

A Simple Landlord Permission Script

Use a short, specific request. Property managers are more likely to approve work when they can see the exact scope, materials, and restoration plan.

Subject: Request to make reversible apartment upgrade

Hello, I would like written permission to complete the following update in Unit [number]: [paint one bedroom / install two curtain rods / replace cabinet pulls using existing holes / mount two shelves]. I will use [specific product, color, fastener, or contractor], avoid plumbing/electrical/fire-safety systems, keep all original parts, and restore the area at move-out if required. Please confirm whether this is approved and whether you have any product, color, contractor, or restoration requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move-Out Checklist for Renter-Friendly Decorating

Take dated photos before and after every project. Keep original parts. Save receipts and product labels. For adhesive products, keep one spare panel or roll section for patching. For paint, keep the color name, brand, sheen, and formula. For shelves and rods, keep anchors, screws, brackets, and installation photos so removal and patching are straightforward.

When removing adhesive, work slowly. Warm a small section with low heat, pull at a low angle, and stop if paint begins to lift. Patch nail holes cleanly and sand only the patched area. If your lease requires professional repainting or specific paint, follow that language rather than guessing.

Final Builder’s Take

The most successful rental decorating projects look intentional but remain reversible. Start with lighting, rugs, curtains, storage, art, mirrors, and textiles. Move carefully into adhesive products, paint, drilled hardware, and wall-mounted pieces only after testing materials and getting approval. Anything involving wiring, fans, plumbing, tile, structure, or life-safety systems belongs in the pro-only category.

A good rental upgrade should pass three tests: it improves daily use, it respects the building, and it can be undone without drama. If an idea fails one of those tests, revise the plan before spending the money.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the safest way to decorate a rental apartment?

Start with reversible items: rugs, curtains on tension rods, lamps, slipcovers, freestanding storage, plants, mirrors, and art hung within adhesive weight limits. Avoid drilling, painting, hardwired fixtures, and strong adhesives unless you have written permission.

Can renters use peel-and-stick wallpaper?

Often, but it is not risk-free. Test it in a hidden area for 48 to 72 hours, confirm the wall paint is clean and fully cured, and remove slowly with low heat. Textured, damp, or poorly painted walls are poor candidates.

How much does it cost to paint an apartment room in 2026?

DIY supplies commonly run about $100 to $400 for a small room. Professional interior painting often costs about $200 to $2,000 per room, with many pros pricing around $2 to $6 per square foot depending on prep, trim, ceiling height, paint grade, and local labor.

Do I need landlord approval to hang shelves?

Yes, treat shelves as approval-required. They usually need screws, anchors, or studs, and poor fastening can damage drywall or create a safety risk. Heavy shelves should be installed with the correct fastener for the wall type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are plug-in sconces renter-friendly?

They are much lower-risk than hardwired sconces because they do not require electrical work. If they screw into the wall, ask permission first and use proper anchors or studs. Keep cords visible and protected rather than running them under rugs or through walls.

What rental decorating upgrades are worth spending more on?

Spend more on items you can take with you: quality rugs, lamps, curtains, freestanding storage, modular closet pieces, and durable furniture. Be cautious about custom shades, permanent tile, paint, or flooring because they may not transfer to your next home.
