You can reduce dust mites and the allergens they leave behind, but you cannot eliminate them from a lived-in home. Start with mattress and pillow encasements, weekly bedding care, and measuring bedroom humidity; then reduce dust-collecting surfaces and clean in ways that limit airborne dust.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Mayo Clinic support these practical steps. They reduce exposure, but should not be presented as a cure for allergies or asthma. If symptoms are persistent or severe, discuss diagnosis and treatment with a health professional.
13 practical ways to reduce dust mites
1. Encase the mattress
Use a fully enclosed, allergen-proof cover designed for dust-mite control. Keep it zipped and follow its care instructions. An encasement is a barrier, not a way to remove allergens already on bedding.
2. Encase pillows and, if practical, the box spring
Use allergen-proof covers on pillows as well as the mattress. A box-spring cover can also help limit access to that reservoir. Wash the pillowcases and other bedding on top of the covers regularly.

3. Wash sheets and washable bedding weekly
Wash sheets, pillowcases, and other washable bedding every week. Check care labels and dry items completely. Mayo Clinic recommends hot water at 130°F (54.4°C) when the fabric allows; that temperature kills dust mites.
4. Choose a washing method the fabric can tolerate
Do not use high temperatures on textiles that cannot safely withstand them. EPA asthma guidance describes cooler-water washing with detergent and bleach as an alternative that can reduce live mites and allergens, but use bleach only when the care label and household circumstances make it safe.
5. Dry bedding fully
Make sure washed bedding is completely dry before putting it back on the bed or storing it. Mayo Clinic says items that cannot be hot-washed may be treated in a dryer above 130°F for at least 15 minutes, if the material permits.

6. Keep soft toys washable and clean them regularly
Choose washable toys where practical, follow their care labels, and dry them fully after cleaning. Keep stuffed toys off the bed when that is practical, especially in a bedroom where someone has dust-mite allergy.
7. Measure humidity before buying equipment
Use a hygrometer to check relative humidity in the bedroom rather than relying on how the air feels. Humidity can vary between rooms, so measure the places where people sleep and where dampness is a concern.
8. Aim for a practical humidity range
EPA guidance gives a general target of 30–50% relative humidity; its asthma guidance says at or below 60%, ideally 30–50%. Mayo Clinic advises keeping humidity below 50% for dust-mite control. Aim for 30–50% where feasible, and treat persistent dampness as a problem to investigate rather than relying on cleaning alone.

- WATERPROOF: Soft, quiet top fabric is backed by a waterproof layer, protecting your mattress from unexpected spills and stains.
- SIDEWALL CONSTRUCTION: fits twin and full mattresses up to 12 inches and queen and king mattresses up to 15 inches
- EASY CARE INSTRUCTIONS: machine wash hot with nonchlorine bleach when needed. Tumble dry on lowest setting separately to avoid protector damage. Dryer temps vary by brand, use the lowest setting and remove when dry. Do not iron.
- LIFETIME WARRANTY: For peace of mind that you’ve made the clean, healthy choice for you and your family!
9. Remove moisture at its source
A dehumidifier or air conditioning may help when measurements show persistently high humidity. Neither should substitute for addressing leaks or other moisture sources. Check for plumbing leaks, water entry, or other dampness, and seek qualified help when the cause is not clear or the problem persists.
10. Vent moisture-producing rooms outdoors
Use bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans that vent outdoors to remove moisture. If a fan is ineffective or its duct does not terminate outdoors, have the ventilation issue assessed and corrected appropriately.
11. Reduce bedroom carpet and hard-to-clean furnishings where practical
Carpets and upholstered furnishings can collect dust and allergens. If changes are feasible, consider easier-to-clean flooring and fewer dust-collecting items in the bedroom. This is an exposure-reduction step, not a guarantee that mites or allergens will be eliminated.

- Zippered mattress cover stretches to fit any King (78” x 80”) standard mattress depth from 12" to 18"
- 100% Waterproof barrier on all six sides of mattress - Lab-tested
- Extra-soft polyester knit fabric is cool and comfortable - breathable waterproof membrane won't trap heat
- Can help improve sleep by reducing common substances that can reach the sleeper and disrupt respiratory function
- Machine washable - Tumble dry low - 5-Year Limited Manufacturer’s Warranty
12. Choose washable rugs and curtains
Where you want soft furnishings, prefer rugs and curtains that can be washed and dried according to their care instructions. This makes routine cleaning more manageable than relying on textiles that are difficult to clean.
13. Damp-dust and vacuum with care
Use a damp cloth on hard surfaces to collect dust rather than simply moving it around. A HEPA-filtered vacuum may reduce dust escaping from the vacuum, but vacuuming does not remove most mites or allergens. Dust can become airborne during cleaning, so allergic household members should stay out of the area while someone else cleans.
Compare practical options
| Choice | When it can help | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Washable bedding | Weekly cleaning removes allergen from sheets and other washable layers. | Follow fabric care directions; dry items fully. |
| Mattress and pillow encasements | Provide a barrier around items that cannot be washed weekly. | They do not clean bedding placed on top or eliminate mites from the home. |
| Hot wash versus cooler wash | Water at 130°F (54.4°C) kills mites when the fabric allows. | For textiles that cannot tolerate hot water, EPA asthma guidance describes a detergent-and-bleach alternative where safe. |
| Measure humidity before using equipment | A hygrometer helps establish whether humidity is persistently high. | Readings can vary by room; one measurement may not reflect the whole home. |
| Dehumidification or air conditioning versus moisture repair | Equipment may help manage high humidity. | It does not replace fixing leaks or other moisture sources. |
| Carpet and upholstery versus easier-to-clean surfaces | Reducing dust-collecting furnishings can make routine cleaning easier. | Changing surfaces reduces reservoirs; it does not eliminate allergens. |
A simple order of work
- Encasing the mattress and pillows, then wash bedding weekly and dry it fully.
- Measure bedroom humidity and aim for 30–50% where feasible.
- Address persistent moisture and make sure bathroom and kitchen exhaust vents outdoors.
- Reduce hard-to-clean bedroom furnishings where practical, and choose washable textiles.
- Damp-dust and vacuum carefully, keeping allergic household members away during cleaning.

What is the best way to wash bedding for dust mites?
Wash bedding weekly. Mayo Clinic says water at 130°F (54.4°C) kills mites, if the fabric allows; dry bedding completely and follow its care instructions.
What humidity should I aim for?
A practical target is 30–50% relative humidity where feasible. EPA gives that general range and says its asthma guidance recommends at or below 60%, ideally 30–50%; Mayo Clinic advises below 50% for dust-mite control.
Does vacuuming remove dust mites?
Vacuuming can help with surface dust, and a HEPA-filtered vacuum may reduce dust escaping from the vacuum. It does not remove most mites or allergens, and cleaning can stir dust into the air. Have someone else vacuum and keep allergic household members out during cleaning.
Can freezing nonwashable items help?
Mayo Clinic says freezing nonwashable items for 24 hours can kill mites, but does not remove allergen residue. Clean or wash the item afterward when its material permits.
Should I buy a dehumidifier?
First measure relative humidity with a hygrometer. A dehumidifier may help if humidity stays high, but it is not a substitute for finding and fixing leaks or other moisture sources.
