Redesigned Nest Learning Thermostat Is Matter Compatible—but Setup Still Requires Google Home

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—the redesigned model, officially called the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), is Matter-certified. That means compatible Matter-enabled platforms can generally control core functions such as temperature and thermostat mode. It does not mean that every Nest learning, scheduling, sensor, energy, or HVAC feature appears identically in Apple Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or another third-party app. Google Home is still required for installation and setup.

Which Nest thermostat supports Matter?

Google launched the redesigned thermostat on August 20, 2024, as the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen). Retail listings may shorten the name to “new Nest thermostat” or “Nest Learning Thermostat,” so check the generation before buying.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

It is different from both the older Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) and the separate, lower-priced Nest Thermostat. Matter support should not be assumed across the entire Nest range. Google’s current materials specifically identify the fourth-generation Learning Thermostat as Matter-certified.

Matter certification versus Google Home compatibility

These are related but different things:

  • Google Home compatibility means the thermostat works natively in Google’s smart-home ecosystem.
  • Matter is a cross-platform smart-home standard that allows compatible controllers and apps from other ecosystems to communicate with supported devices.
  • Setup remains Google-centric: Google says installation and setup require the Google Home app.

After setup, the thermostat can be controlled through Google Home and compatible Matter-enabled apps and voice assistants. However, a phone, speaker, display, or router is not automatically a Matter controller. The target ecosystem may require a compatible hub or home controller. Google explains the controller requirements in its Matter guidance.

What Matter lets you control

Google specifically describes Matter control for adjusting the thermostat’s temperature and changing its mode. In practice, a compatible platform may also let you:

  • View the current temperature.
  • Set a target temperature.
  • Change supported heating or cooling modes.
  • Use the thermostat in compatible routines or voice commands.

The exact controls depend on the platform’s Matter implementation and the features the thermostat exposes. Matter compatibility is not a promise that Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, and other platforms will offer identical menus or automations.

What Matter does not necessarily expose

The Nest Learning Thermostat’s distinctive intelligence may remain primarily tied to Google Home and Nest services. Do not assume that a third-party Matter app will reproduce:

  • Nest learning and automatic scheduling.
  • Google-specific energy features.
  • Farsight display behavior.
  • Google Home routines and presence experiences.
  • Complete Nest Temperature Sensor management.
  • Advanced HVAC configuration or every accessory control.

The practical distinction is simple: Matter provides cross-platform control of supported thermostat functions; it does not guarantee the full Google Nest experience outside Google Home.

What changed with the 2026 software update?

Google’s software history lists version 2.4, dated April 30, 2026, with new on-device setup screens, expanded HVAC support, advanced on-device settings, and Matter bridge support for thermostat sensors.

That sensor update expands what the thermostat can do with other Matter-enabled devices, but it should not be interpreted as proof that every third-party platform provides identical sensor configuration, room selection, scheduling, or comfort controls. Google also says updates can take several weeks to reach all Wi-Fi-connected thermostats. Check the current Nest thermostat software history if a newly purchased unit does not yet show the latest features.

Check HVAC compatibility before buying

Matter certification does not make a thermostat compatible with every heating and cooling system. Google says the fourth-generation model works with most 24-volt systems, including:

  • Gas, electric, and oil systems.
  • Forced-air systems.
  • Heat pumps.
  • Radiant systems.

The redesigned backplate also expands support for equipment such as ventilation systems, humidifiers, and dehumidifiers, subject to the system’s wiring and configuration. Google’s compatibility guidance refers to humidifier, dehumidifier, and ventilation equipment on AQ+ configurations.

Do not decide based only on the HVAC brand. System type, wiring, stages, and accessories matter more. Use Google’s compatibility checker before removing the existing thermostat.

Is a C wire required?

Not always, but “no C wire required” is too broad. Some installations need a C wire or the Nest Power Connector. Pay particular attention to:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Older or unusual systems.
  • Multi-stage equipment.
  • Heat pumps with auxiliary or emergency heat.
  • Humidifiers, dehumidifiers, or ventilation controls.
  • Installations where power-sharing causes unreliable operation.

The Google Home app provides a wiring guide during setup. If the wiring is unclear or the system has several accessories, professional installation is the safer choice.

How to set up Matter control

  1. Identify the model. Confirm that the device is the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen).
  2. Check the HVAC system. Compare the existing wiring and equipment with Google’s compatibility checker.
  3. Install it through Google Home. Google states that the app is required for installation and setup.
  4. Allow software updates. Keep the thermostat connected to Wi-Fi and allow time for current firmware to arrive.
  5. Open the target platform’s Matter-device setup flow. Adding the thermostat to Google Home does not necessarily add it automatically to every other ecosystem.
  6. Test basic functions first. Verify temperature changes and mode changes before testing routines, voice commands, sensors, or advanced HVAC functions.

If the thermostat does not appear in the other platform, confirm that it is online in Google Home, check that the target ecosystem has a Matter controller, update the controller and app, and verify the network requirements. Use Google Home as the fallback control path. Platform menus and commissioning steps can change, so follow the current instructions for the specific ecosystem.

Is the fourth-generation model worth buying?

It is a strong fit when you want Google’s learning-thermostat experience but also want the option of basic cross-platform Matter control. The package includes the thermostat, mounting hardware, a Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen), and Google says up to six additional sensors can be used per thermostat.

The U.S. Google Store listed it at $279.99 on August 16, 2026, with financing shown at $23.33 per month for 12 months. Prices, bundles, rebates, and availability can change by country and date, so treat that as a dated U.S. price observation rather than a universal current price.

  • The Nest Thermostat is designed to work without a C wire in most homes, but for some systems, including heating only, cooling only, zone controlled, and heat pump systems, you’ll need a C wire or other compatible power accessory
  • Nest Thermostat turns itself down when you leave, so you don’t waste energy heating or cooling an empty home. Lock feature: No
  • Programmable thermostat that lets you create an energy efficient schedule in the Google Home app on your Android or iPhone
  • Remote control lets family members change the thermostat temperature from anywhere on a phone, laptop, or tablet[1]

Upgrading from a third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat solely for Matter requires more careful consideration. The fourth-generation model adds the documented Matter certification and newer hardware, but the value depends on how important cross-platform control is to your household.

When ecobee may be a better choice

ecobee may suit households that prioritize Apple HomeKit, established integrations with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings, or room-sensor and comfort-balancing features. Its U.S. comparison page listed these prices:

Model U.S. price seen Notable positioning
Smart Thermostat Premium $259.99 Built-in Alexa, indoor air-quality monitoring, and included SmartSensor
Smart Thermostat Enhanced $199.99 Mid-range model with learning behavior and support for one HVAC accessory
Smart Thermostat Essential $139.99 Lower-cost option for connected control and scheduling

These prices come from ecobee’s U.S. page and are subject to change. The cited ecobee materials document ecosystem integrations, but they do not establish Matter certification for these models. Do not treat ecobee as a Matter-equivalent without checking certification for the exact model.

The Honeywell Home T9 is another ecosystem-compatible option, with official support listed for Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, SmartThings, and IFTTT. The cited manufacturer page does not establish Matter certification, so it is better viewed as a conventional integration alternative rather than a confirmed Matter substitute.
