Rammed Earth vs. Concrete: Cost, Strength, Insulation, and Maintenance

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither rammed earth nor concrete is the universal winner. Rammed earth is a high-mass wall that can provide excellent temperature buffering and a distinctive finish, while concrete masonry has more mature structural specifications, wider contractor availability, and highly predictable supply chains. The right choice depends on the complete wall assembly, local code, climate, soil, labor market, and engineering—not on the material name alone.

This comparison uses concrete masonry (concrete block and related assemblies) as the concrete reference. Poured reinforced concrete, insulated concrete forms, and insulated cavity walls have different thermal and structural behavior and must be assessed as separate assemblies.

What is being compared?

Rammed earth

Rammed-earth walls are built by placing moist soil in forms and compacting it in successive lifts. The finished wall is usually thick, heavy, and visually exposed. Its performance depends on the soil grading, moisture content during placement, compaction energy, stabiliser content, curing, reinforcement, wall geometry, weather protection, and workmanship. A wall that looks like rammed earth may therefore have very different structural and thermal properties from another wall using the same label.

Concrete masonry

Concrete masonry normally means factory-made concrete masonry units (CMUs) laid with mortar, often with grout and steel reinforcement in selected cores. The wall’s capacity is an assembly property: unit strength, mortar, grout, reinforcement, bond, workmanship, geometry, and connection details all matter. An uninsulated block wall, an insulated cavity wall, and an insulated concrete form wall should not be treated as interchangeable examples of “concrete.”

Why the assembly matters

A fair comparison prices and engineers the entire wall: foundations, reinforcement, openings, lintels, finishes, insulation, waterproofing, flashings, drainage, service penetrations, labor, inspections, and future repairs. Comparing the price of one rammed-earth wall to the block units alone, or comparing a bare block wall to an insulated rammed-earth design, can produce a misleading result.

Quick comparison

Decision factor Rammed earth Concrete masonry What changes the result
Installed cost Professional construction is described by YourHome as comparable to other good-quality masonry construction. Often benefits from established suppliers, standard details, and a larger labor pool. Imported or tested soil, cement stabilisation, reinforcement, complex formwork, insulation, waterproofing, local wages, and access.
Compression Highly variable; selected stabilised earthen systems in a 2025 meta-analysis reached up to 24 MPa. ASTM C90 units have a minimum compressive strength of 2,000 psi (13.8 MPa), according to the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association (2023). Those figures are not direct wall-to-wall comparisons. Mortar, grout, reinforcement, curing, geometry, and construction quality determine the specified wall capacity.
Thermal behavior High thermal mass can damp and delay daily temperature swings. Uninsulated block also has mass but can have limited insulation; insulated cavity and ICF assemblies perform differently. Climate, orientation, thickness, moisture, ventilation, shading, and whether insulation is inside or outside the mass.
Insulation compliance A typical 300 mm wall generally needs added insulation to meet Australian external-wall requirements. Uninsulated block may also need cavity or continuous insulation; ICF and insulated systems are separate designs. Use the R-value or U-value of the complete tested or engineered assembly, not mass alone.
Moisture risk Durable above grade when protected from driving rain and persistent moisture; detailing is critical. Long-lasting, but joints, cracks, efflorescence, drainage, and surface exposure still require management. Site drainage, capillary breaks, roof overhangs, flashings, coatings, and local rainfall or freeze-thaw exposure.
Workforce and supply Requires suitable soil, specialist formwork, compaction, and experienced crews. Uses widely available units, mortar, reinforcement, and conventional masonry trades in many regions. Local availability can reverse an apparent material advantage.

Is rammed earth cheaper than concrete?

There is no defensible universal installed price. YourHome, an Australian Government resource, says the cost of a professionally built rammed-earth building is comparable to other conventional, good-quality masonry construction. That statement is a useful starting point, not a quotation for a particular site.

Why a rammed-earth estimate can rise

  • Soil: On-site soil may not have the required grading or moisture characteristics. Importing suitable material, laboratory testing, screening, and stockpiling add cost.
  • Stabilisation: Cement or another stabiliser can improve strength and moisture resistance but adds material, mixing, and quality-control expense.
  • Reinforcement and engineering: Steel, bond beams, hold-downs, seismic detailing, and project-specific calculations are priced separately from the soil.
  • Formwork: Reusable straight forms are relatively efficient; curved walls, numerous corners, tight openings, and difficult access increase setup and labor time.
  • Thermal upgrades: Exterior insulation or an integrated insulated assembly may be necessary where a bare mass wall cannot meet code.
  • Water protection: Plinths, caps, flashings, breathable or compatible coatings, drainage, and periodic waterproofing add both initial and recurring cost.
  • Specialist labor: A crew that understands lift thickness, moisture conditioning, compaction, and curing may travel from another region.

Why concrete masonry can appear cheaper

Concrete masonry commonly has established distributors, standard unit sizes, familiar estimating systems, and code tables that reduce uncertainty. Those advantages are not automatic: a block wall requiring grout, dense reinforcement, special lintels, scaffolding, insulation, render, and waterproofing can cost more than a straightforward rammed-earth wall on a suitable site.

What published studies can and cannot tell you

A 2024 life-cycle study from Iran assessed 22 wall systems, including rammed earth and concrete masonry. Its findings are context-specific: local energy prices, transport distances, labor, materials, climate, and construction practice mean the results should not be converted into a universal bid or payback period.

A 2025 rural-China case study reported preliminary embodied carbon of 241 kg CO2e/m² for modern rammed earth and 417 kg CO2e/m² for brick-concrete. Those are Chalmers/IOP case-study results, not universal cost or carbon benchmarks. They describe the studied projects and boundaries rather than every rammed-earth or concrete wall.

A practical budgeting method

  1. Define the performance target. Record required fire rating, structural loads, thermal code values, acoustic goals, finish, and expected service life.
  2. Test the proposed soil. Confirm whether local material is usable and identify the cost of processing, importing, or disposing of unsuitable soil.
  3. Price complete assemblies. Ask each bidder to include foundations, reinforcement, openings, insulation, coatings, flashings, drainage, services, equipment, testing, and cleanup.
  4. Separate one-time and recurring costs. Include inspections, resealing or waterproofing, crack repairs, repointing, cleaning, and likely access equipment.
  5. Obtain an engineered comparison. Have the same loads, openings, thermal target, finish standard, and site conditions applied to both wall options before choosing on price.

Is rammed earth stronger than concrete?

Rammed earth can be load-bearing and very strong in compression, but its strength is not a single material constant. Soil grading, moisture, compaction, stabiliser, curing, reinforcement, wall slenderness, openings, and workmanship can move the result substantially.

“Rammed earth is very strong in compression and can be used for multistorey loadbearing construction.” — YourHome, Australian Government guidance

Rammed-earth strength evidence

A 2025 review in Buildings reported selected stabilised earthen systems reaching up to 24 MPa compressive strength. “Up to” describes the highest results among selected systems; it is not a guaranteed design value for an unstabilised wall or a particular soil. New Zealand guidance likewise stresses that consistent workmanship is critical to rammed-earth strength. A project needs representative testing, a documented mix and moisture process, controlled lift thickness, compaction records, and an engineer’s design values.

Concrete masonry strength evidence

The Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association reported in 2023 that ASTM C90 units have a minimum compressive strength of 2,000 psi (13.8 MPa). That is a unit requirement, not automatically the compressive capacity of a completed wall. Mortar, grout, reinforcement, unit configuration, prisms or other required tests, construction tolerances, and load paths determine the wall’s specified strength.

Compression is only one structural question

Buildings also need resistance to wind, earthquakes, impact, out-of-plane bending, foundation movement, fire, and connections between walls, floors, roofs, and openings. Rammed earth may require reinforced bond beams, vertical reinforcement, buttresses, or other engineered details. Concrete masonry may require fully or partially grouted cores, reinforced cells, bond beams, lintels, and movement joints. A higher laboratory compressive number does not by itself make one wall safer for a particular building.

Does rammed earth insulate better?

Thermal mass and insulation are different properties. Thermal mass stores heat and slows temperature change. Insulation resists heat flow and is described by an R-value or U-value. A thick earthen wall can moderate indoor swings while still allowing more steady heat flow than an insulated wall.

What a 2026 field study found

A 2026 two-climate field study compared identical 300 mm rammed-earth and hollow-concrete-block walls in six combinations of site and orientation. Rammed earth damped daily temperature swings more than the hollow block in every tested combination. At the Riyadh site, the mean inner-face temperature amplitude was 7.0 °C for rammed earth, compared with an outdoor amplitude of 12.5 °C; the thermal time lag was 3.2 hours for rammed earth and 1.3 hours for concrete block.

The experiment used open, unconditioned test cells. It demonstrates temperature damping and delay under those conditions, but it does not directly prove a particular reduction in air-conditioning energy or utility bills. Occupancy, windows, ventilation, shading, equipment, thermostat settings, humidity, and insulation would change a building’s result.

Code insulation is a separate check

YourHome states that a typical 300 mm rammed-earth wall generally will not meet Australian external-wall insulation requirements without an additional insulation layer. Placing insulation on the exterior keeps the earthen thermal mass inside the insulated envelope, allowing the wall to buffer indoor temperature while the insulation limits ongoing heat flow.

Uninsulated concrete block can also have limited insulation. An insulated cavity wall or insulated concrete form can perform very differently from bare block, so the comparison must use the proposed assembly’s tested or calculated R-value/U-value. Do not substitute a thermal-mass claim for a compliance calculation.

Design choices that affect comfort

  • Climate: Daily temperature swings, night-time cooling, humidity, and heating versus cooling loads determine whether mass helps.
  • Orientation and shading: Solar exposure and external shading can dominate wall behavior.
  • Insulation location: Exterior insulation preserves interior mass; interior insulation reduces the mass’s contact with indoor conditions.
  • Moisture: Wet materials and rain exposure can alter thermal performance and durability.
  • Openings and services: Windows, doors, ducts, and penetrations create thermal paths that a wall-only comparison misses.

Durability, moisture, and maintenance

Rammed-earth moisture strategy

Rammed earth is durable when it is kept above grade and protected from driving rain and persistent moisture. The design should provide a raised, robust base; a cap or coping that sheds water; roof overhangs where appropriate; correctly detailed flashings; positive site drainage; and finishes compatible with the wall’s moisture behavior. Below-grade use, splash zones, leaking services, and poor drainage create a fundamentally different risk profile.

YourHome describes periodic external waterproofing as part of maintenance for many rammed-earth applications. The frequency depends on exposure, coating system, workmanship, and local weather; it is not a universal interval. Cracks, erosion, staining, damp patches, and failed sealants should be investigated before recoating so that water is not trapped or the symptom merely covered.

Concrete masonry maintenance

Concrete masonry is long-lasting, but it is not maintenance-free. Owners should inspect for cracking, displaced or deteriorated mortar joints, water entry, efflorescence, damaged coatings, and corrosion-related distress where reinforcement is exposed to moisture. Cleaning methods must suit the unit and finish; aggressive pressure washing or incompatible chemicals can damage the surface. Repointing, crack repair, drainage correction, and replacement of failed flashings are preferable to cosmetic patching alone.

Maintenance planning by interval

When Rammed earth checks Concrete masonry checks
After severe weather Look for erosion, impact, wetting at the base, damaged caps, failed flashings, and new cracks. Look for cracking, displaced units, open joints, staining, blocked drainage, and damaged coping or flashings.
Routine inspection Check splash zones, sealants, coatings, roof drainage, and vegetation or soil buildup against the wall. Check mortar joints, efflorescence, sealants, joints, coatings, and signs of water entering cavities or cores.
When defects appear Identify the water source and structural cause before waterproofing or patching. Determine whether movement, corrosion, drainage, or joint failure caused the crack or dampness.
Planned renewal Budget for compatible external waterproofing or finish renewal where exposure requires it. Budget for cleaning, repointing, sealant replacement, coating renewal, and localized unit repair.

Moisture control is a general building requirement, not an earthen-wall preference. UK government research notes that regulations require protection from harmful moisture effects. The same principle applies to both materials: keep bulk water out, provide drainage, and make inspection possible.

Embodied carbon and environmental trade-offs

Rammed earth can reduce processed material and transport impacts when suitable soil is available on or near the site, but stabiliser, imported soil, testing, formwork, reinforcement, insulation, coatings, and transport can change the balance. Concrete masonry carries impacts from cement and manufacturing but benefits from standardized production and established logistics. End-of-life assumptions, service life, maintenance, and the insulation required to meet operational targets also matter.

The rural-China figures cited earlier—241 kg CO2e/m² for modern rammed earth and 417 kg CO2e/m² for brick-concrete in a 2025 Chalmers/IOP case study—should be used as project evidence, not as a universal ranking. Ask for the system boundary, wall thickness, reinforcement, transport distance, stabiliser content, insulation, finish, and maintenance assumptions before comparing environmental declarations.

Buildability and design risk

Soil and quality control

Rammed-earth construction needs a repeatable material recipe and process. The team must control moisture, lift thickness, compaction, form alignment, curing, corners, joints, and interfaces with openings. A visually attractive wall can still have weak or poorly bonded zones if the process is inconsistent.

Forms, openings, and sequencing

Every doorway, window, niche, service chase, and change in wall direction affects formwork and compaction access. Coordinate electrical, plumbing, ventilation, and attachment points before placing earth. Late cutting or chasing can compromise the wall and create difficult repairs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Concrete masonry coordination

Concrete masonry also needs planning for bond patterns, control or movement joints, reinforcement, grout lifts, lintels, flashing, and service penetrations. Its advantage is that standard details and familiar trades are available in more locations, but poor jointing or ungrouted reinforcement cells can still undermine the design.

Code and approvals

Ask the building authority and engineer which standards, testing, fire provisions, seismic rules, moisture details, and inspection stages apply. A material may be physically capable of carrying a load yet difficult to approve without a recognized calculation method, test report, or qualified designer. Confirm the approval path before committing to a floor plan or finish that depends on a nonstandard detail.

Which wall needs less maintenance?

Neither material can be declared maintenance-free. Rammed earth usually demands especially disciplined moisture detailing and may need periodic external waterproofing or compatible finish renewal. Concrete masonry usually has a more familiar inspection and repair routine, but mortar joints, cracks, efflorescence, coatings, and drainage still require attention.

The lower-maintenance choice is the wall that is correctly detailed for its exposure, built by a competent crew, and accessible for inspection. A badly protected rammed-earth wall can deteriorate quickly; a poorly drained or cracked concrete-masonry wall can also develop persistent moisture and structural problems.

How to choose for a real project

Rammed earth is a strong candidate when:

  • Suitable local soil is available or can be imported at a reasonable cost.
  • An experienced rammed-earth contractor and engineer are available for the region.
  • The design values thermal mass, exposed texture, and a thick-wall aesthetic.
  • The project can accommodate exterior or integrated insulation where code requires it.
  • The site and detailing can keep the wall above grade and protected from persistent wetting.
  • The owner accepts specialized formwork, testing, and a maintenance plan for finishes and waterproofing.

Concrete masonry or an insulated concrete assembly is usually preferable when:

  • A mature, familiar code pathway and broad contractor supply are priorities.
  • Structural loads, lateral demands, or construction schedules require highly predictable standardized details.
  • Insulation, cavities, fire ratings, or service coordination are easier to achieve with a conventional assembly.
  • Local rammed-earth soil testing, labor, or engineering would add substantial uncertainty.
  • The project team wants readily available replacement units, mortar, grout, and repair trades.

A fair preconstruction comparison checklist

  1. Describe the same building. Use identical plans, openings, floor and roof loads, fire requirements, acoustic targets, finishes, and service routes.
  2. Set the climate assumptions. Record design temperatures, rainfall, humidity, solar exposure, wind-driven rain, freeze-thaw risk, and orientation.
  3. Define the thermal target. Compare whole-wall R-value or U-value separately from thermal lag and mass. State where insulation sits.
  4. Confirm structural criteria. Include gravity, wind, seismic, impact, out-of-plane, connection, foundation, and opening requirements.
  5. Test and document materials. For rammed earth, establish soil, moisture, stabiliser, compaction, curing, and representative strength data. For concrete masonry, specify unit, mortar, grout, reinforcement, and required assembly tests.
  6. Obtain complete bids. Require line items for testing, engineering, equipment, formwork, reinforcement, insulation, flashings, waterproofing, finishes, waste, and access.
  7. Model ownership. Include inspection, cleaning, coating or waterproofing renewal, repointing, crack repair, and likely access costs over the intended service life.
  8. Verify approvals and warranties. Confirm the authority’s acceptance, inspection schedule, responsible engineer, installer qualifications, and limitations of any product or coating warranty.
  9. Choose on risk-adjusted value. Select the assembly that meets code and performance goals with a realistic local labor, maintenance, and moisture-control plan—not the one with the lowest unqualified material price.

Bottom line

Rammed earth offers substantial thermal mass, a distinctive finish, and potentially lower embodied impacts in the right setting, but it needs suitable soil, specialist workmanship, added insulation in many code contexts, and careful moisture protection. Concrete masonry offers a mature structural and supply-chain ecosystem, yet an uninsulated block wall is not automatically thermally efficient and still needs inspection and repair. Have a local engineer price and detail both complete assemblies before treating cost, strength, insulation, or maintenance as decisive.
