If raccoons are visiting your yard, start with the practical assumption: something on the property is paying them to come back. That reward may be trash, pet food, bird seed, fallen fruit, a fish pond, compost, grill grease, a loose crawl-space vent, or a dry void under a deck or shed. The fastest durable fix is to remove the attractants first, then block access to shelter with construction-grade materials.
On our job sites, we treat raccoon problems the same way we treat water intrusion or pest entry: find the source, close the path, and make the repair strong enough to survive weather, digging, and repeated testing. Repellents can buy a few nights. A properly secured trash area, protected crawl vent, capped chimney, and buried hardware-cloth apron can solve the problem for years.
Here is the short version: secure food and water tonight, inspect for denning spots tomorrow morning, avoid contact with raccoons or feces, do not seal an occupied space, and call a licensed wildlife professional if there may be babies, attic or chimney access, aggressive behavior, disease risk, or trapping. In 2026, simple raccoon removal often runs a few hundred dollars, while attic exclusion and cleanup can reach several thousand dollars.
Start With a Night Audit
Raccoons are mostly nocturnal, so the best inspection is after dusk or early in the morning. You are looking for the reason they are choosing your yard over the next one. Walk the property with a flashlight and check the areas that actually matter: garbage cans, compost, bird feeders, fruit trees, vegetable beds, grills, pet bowls, ponds, birdbaths, sheds, crawl-space vents, deck edges, fence lines, downspouts, roof edges, and low tree limbs.

Look for tipped cans, muddy paw prints, torn vent screens, disturbed mulch, rolled sod, loose lattice, droppings, greasy rub marks, and trails through soft planting beds. Raccoon tracks often show five long toes, almost like small handprints. If you see repeated disturbance in the same location, treat that spot as the priority instead of scattering deterrents across the whole yard.
A daytime raccoon does not automatically mean rabies. Mothers may forage during daylight when feeding young, especially in spring and early summer. Still, keep children and pets away, and do not try to corner, feed, or handle the animal. A raccoon that is staggering, unusually aggressive, unable to move normally, excessively drooling, or acting disoriented should be reported to local animal control or a licensed wildlife operator.
Remove the Food Before You Buy Deterrents
Most failed raccoon control starts with skipping this step. If the yard still has garbage, pet food, fallen fruit, spilled seed, or grease, repellents become a temporary inconvenience rather than a solution. Raccoons are strong, persistent, and good at testing weak lids, loose boards, and soft soil.
Trash and Recycling
Use locking trash cans or add a latch system that cannot be flipped open by a paw. Bungee cords are better than nothing, but a hinged locking lid or enclosed trash pad is more reliable. If the cans sit outside overnight, place them in a fenced trash enclosure with a self-closing gate, or store them in a garage only if the garage door seals tightly at the bottom.

If your municipality requires cans to stay accessible at the curb, move them out the morning of pickup instead of the night before whenever possible.
Pet Food, Bird Feeders, and Grills
Bring pet food inside before dusk. Clean bowls and the surrounding slab or deck boards. Bird feeders are a major attractant because spilled seed feeds rodents and raccoons. If raccoons are active, pull feeders for two weeks, clean the ground below them, and restart only with a catch tray and a location away from rooflines, fences, and deck rails.
Grills need the same attention. Burn off residue after cooking, scrape grease trays, and store drip pans where animals cannot reach them. A raccoon does not need a full meal to learn your patio is worth checking every night.
Fruit, Compost, and Water
Pick up fallen fruit daily during the season. Use a compost bin with a locking lid and avoid meat, dairy, and oily scraps. Fish ponds, birdbaths, and shallow water features can keep raccoons returning even after food is removed. If a pond is being raided, use a rigid cover at night or add a properly supported mesh barrier that does not create an entanglement hazard.
Confirm Whether You Have Visitors or a Den
There is a big difference between a raccoon crossing the yard and a raccoon living under the deck. Visitors are handled by attractant removal and yard hardening. Denning animals require more care because sealing the opening at the wrong time can trap adults or young inside.

Common den sites include deck voids, crawl spaces, sheds, chimneys, attics, roof returns, soffits, brush piles, and gaps below additions. Signs of a den include repeated entry at one opening, nesting material, flattened grass at the entry, strong odor, scratching or thumping at night, and adult raccoons carrying food to the same location. In spring baby season, listen for high-pitched chattering or crying from under a structure, inside a chimney, or above a ceiling.
If you are not sure whether the space is occupied, use a non-invasive test. Smooth a light layer of flour or fine sand near the opening and check for tracks the next morning. You can also loosely stuff the opening with newspaper and see whether it is pushed out overnight. Do not block the hole with lumber, foam, wire, or masonry until you are confident no animals are inside.
Use Temporary Humane Deterrents the Right Way
Lights, noise, strong smells, and motion sprinklers may help convince a raccoon that a den site is uncomfortable. They do not replace exclusion, and they usually fail when food is still available. Use them as a short-term pressure tool for a few nights while you remove attractants and prepare permanent repairs.

For a suspected den under a deck or shed, place a bright work light near the entry, point a radio toward the void, and leave the exit open. The goal is to encourage the animal to leave on its own. Give it at least one or two nights unless there is an immediate safety issue. If babies may be present, stop and call a professional. One-way doors can trap young inside if installed at the wrong time.
Avoid relying on mothballs, ammonia, predator urine, or homemade chemical mixtures as your main strategy. Some products can create odor problems, damage materials, or introduce safety issues around kids and pets. Any pesticide or repellent must be used exactly according to the label. Off-label use can be illegal and can create liability if pets, neighbors, or non-target wildlife are harmed.
Build the Barrier Like It Has to Survive Digging
Once the animals are out, the repair has to be stronger than the original weak point. Lightweight plastic lattice, thin trim, stapled screen, and expanding foam alone are not raccoon-proof. Raccoons can pull, pry, climb, and dig. If they previously lived in a void, they may test the repair repeatedly.
Decks and Sheds
For decks and sheds, use galvanized welded wire or hardware cloth, commonly 16-gauge to 19-gauge, with openings no larger than 1/2 inch for general exclusion work. Fasten it to solid framing, not just thin skirt boards. Use exterior screws with washers, fender washers, or battens so the mesh cannot be peeled away.
The best detail is an L-shaped apron. Run the vertical mesh from the underside of the structure down to grade, then bend it outward along the ground 12 to 24 inches. Bury the apron 2 to 6 inches below soil or cover it with stone, pavers, or compacted backfill. The outward apron stops digging because the animal hits wire as it tries to excavate at the edge.
If the deck skirt is visible from the yard, install the hardware cloth as the structural barrier and then place finished trim or lattice over it for appearance. The decorative layer should not be the only defense.

Crawl Spaces, Vents, and Foundation Gaps
Replace torn crawl-space screens with metal vent covers or framed hardware cloth. Check that the surrounding wood is sound. A new screen fastened to rotten trim will fail quickly. For masonry gaps, use appropriate patching mortar, metal mesh, or a manufactured vent well cover. Do not block required ventilation unless you are also changing the crawl-space design to a code-compliant sealed or conditioned system.
Roofs, Chimneys, and Trees
Trim branches back from the roofline, typically 6 to 10 feet where practical, especially near dormers, gutters, and low-slope roof sections. Install chimney caps and animal-resistant vent guards where raccoons could enter. Torn soffit panels, loose fascia, and damaged roof vents should be repaired promptly because a yard nuisance can become an attic job once the animal finds a warm, dry opening.

Handle Raccoon Droppings Like a Health Hazard
Raccoons can carry rabies and raccoon roundworm. The roundworm risk is the reason feces cleanup should not be treated like ordinary yard debris. Raccoon latrines are often found on flat elevated surfaces, decks, wood piles, roofs, fence lines, sandboxes, or near tree bases. Eggs can be hardy, and dry sweeping, vacuuming, hosing, or pressure washing can spread contamination.
Keep children and pets away from suspected latrines. Wear disposable gloves, rubber boots, eye protection, and an N95 or better respirator if cleanup is appropriate for a homeowner. Lightly mist the area to reduce dust, remove feces with disposable tools or heavy plastic bags, and dispose of waste according to local guidance. Wash clothing separately and clean tools carefully afterward.
Porous materials are the hard part. Soil, mulch, insulation, unfinished wood, and sandboxes may require removal or professional remediation. A contaminated attic with damaged insulation is not a simple cleaning project. The job may involve feces removal, insulation removal, disinfection, deodorizing, air sealing, and new insulation. That is where costs climb quickly.
What Raccoon Removal Costs in 2026
Costs vary because “raccoon removal” can mean anything from one animal in a yard trap to a mother and kits in an attic with torn vents, contaminated insulation, and multiple follow-up visits. For budgeting, separate the job into inspection, removal, exclusion repair, and cleanup.

|---|---|---|
| Inspection or service call | $80 to $150 for raccoon inspection; broader wildlife inspections often $100 to $300 | Travel, attic or roof access, diagnosis, written scope |
| Simple yard removal | About $200 to $450 for many straightforward jobs | One animal, easy access, limited follow-up |
| Standard trapping and removal | Roughly $350 to $600 | Trap setup, monitoring visits, number of animals, local rules |
| Baby or nest hand removal | About $200 to $500 as an add-on; some manual nest removal runs $300 to $750 | Season, access, reunification or legal handling requirements |
| Entry-point repair and exclusion | Commonly $400 to $1,500+, with broader exclusion sometimes $750 to $2,000+ | Roof vents, soffits, chimney caps, crawl vents, deck skirting, ladder or lift work |
| Post-removal cleanup | Often $250 to $500 for limited cleaning; feces/decontamination may run $500 to $1,500+ | Amount of feces, PPE, insulation, ductwork, odor, disposal |
| Attic raccoon removal and remediation | Often $1,000 to $3,500 when trapping, sealing, and disinfection are included | Multiple visits, babies, insulation damage, roof repairs, contamination |
The national average for a simple raccoon removal job is often around $250 to $400, but that number can be misleading if the animal has entered the structure. A torn roof vent plus feces in insulation is a different project than a raccoon tipping over trash cans. Emergency calls, weekend service, steep roofs, lift access, multiple animals, and state-specific relocation rules can all raise the price.
Before hiring, ask what is included. A good scope should identify inspection fees, trap checks, number of animals covered, baby removal, exclusion repairs, cleanup or disinfection, warranty terms, and whether the company follows your state’s nuisance wildlife rules. Document damage with photos before work starts, especially torn vents, soffits, feces, insulation, ductwork, roof damage, and disturbed trash areas.
When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
DIY is reasonable when raccoons are only visiting the yard, there is no direct contact, no aggressive behavior, no attic or chimney entry, no suspected babies, and no major feces contamination. In that situation, focus on removing food, securing trash, cleaning spilled seed, protecting gardens, trimming access routes, and installing barriers after you confirm no animals are inside.

Hire a licensed wildlife removal company when trapping is needed, when an animal is in a chimney or attic, when young may be present, when the raccoon appears sick or aggressive, when there is a latrine in a sensitive area, or when repairs involve rooflines, soffits, vents, insulation, or crawl spaces. You should also hire out work that requires ladders beyond your comfort level or creates fall risk.
Legal rules matter. Relocation laws vary widely by state. Some states prohibit relocating raccoons off-site. Others allow it only with landowner permission, notice requirements, distance limits, or a nuisance wildlife control license. Do not assume you can trap a raccoon in your yard and release it at a park or rural road. That may be illegal, may spread disease, and may simply move the problem to another property.
Poison is not a responsible raccoon-control method. EPA pesticide rules require label-compliant use, and rodenticides can harm pets, non-target wildlife, and neighbors. Poisoned animals may also die inside walls, crawl spaces, or landscaping, creating odor and cleanup problems.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Permits, Property Lines, and Exterior Work
Most small exclusion repairs do not require a building permit, but exterior projects can cross into permit territory depending on your city or county. Fence height, new trash enclosures, deck modifications, electrical deterrents, structural framing changes, and work near property lines may be regulated. Local rules vary, so check before adding a tall enclosure, rebuilding deck skirting as part of a larger deck repair, or running power for lights or motion devices.
As a practical rule, replacing a torn vent cover or adding hardware cloth to an existing shed skirt is usually maintenance. Building a new fence, changing deck structure, adding a roofed enclosure, or altering electrical systems is more likely to need review. If you are in an HOA, check design rules before installing visible mesh, exterior storage enclosures, or fence changes.

We see a lot of quick barriers that trap mulch and water against wood. Keep soil and mulch below siding and framing, maintain clearance at posts and rim boards, and avoid creating a wet pocket under a deck. A raccoon repair should not become a rot problem two seasons later.
A Practical 7-Day Raccoon Plan
Day 1: secure trash, remove pet food, pull bird feeders, clean grill grease, pick up fallen fruit, and restrict access to compost. Keep pets inside at night.
Day 2: inspect for tracks, droppings, deck gaps, shed openings, crawl vents, roof access, and water sources. Photograph damage and mark suspected entry points.
Day 3: test suspected den openings with loose newspaper or a track patch. Do not seal anything yet. If you hear young or see repeated entry, call a wildlife professional.

The best way to get rid of raccoons in your yard is to make the yard stop functioning like a feeding station or den site. Remove food and water, confirm whether there is an occupied space, use temporary deterrents only as support, and then install real physical exclusion. For decks and sheds, that usually means metal mesh with a buried outward apron. For houses, it means repaired vents, soffits, chimneys, crawl spaces, and roof edges.
If the situation involves babies, trapping, disease concerns, attic access, chimney access, or feces cleanup, bring in a licensed wildlife professional. The cost is usually justified when the alternative is trapping illegally, sealing animals inside, spreading contamination, or leaving the construction defect open for the next raccoon.
Frequently Asked Questions
What attracts raccoons to my yard?
The most common attractants are unsecured garbage, pet food, bird seed, fallen fruit, compost, grills, fish ponds, birdbaths, vegetable gardens, open sheds, crawl spaces, decks, chimneys, roof vents, and brush or wood piles.
How much does raccoon removal cost in 2026?
Simple raccoon removal often costs about $200 to $450. Standard trapping may run $350 to $600. Attic removal with sealing and disinfection can cost $1,000 to $3,500 depending on access, babies, contamination, and repairs.

Can I trap and relocate a raccoon myself?
Do not trap and relocate a raccoon without checking state and local rules first. Relocation laws vary widely, and some states prohibit off-site relocation or require a licensed nuisance wildlife operator.
What smell keeps raccoons away?
Smells such as ammonia, predator urine, and other repellents may create temporary pressure, but they usually fail if food, water, or shelter remains. Physical exclusion and attractant removal are more reliable.
Is a raccoon in my yard during the day dangerous?
Daytime activity does not automatically mean rabies because mothers may forage during daylight when raising young. Keep distance, keep pets and children away, and call animal control if the raccoon appears sick, aggressive, disoriented, or unable to move normally.
How do I keep raccoons from living under my deck or shed?
After confirming no animals or babies are inside, install galvanized hardware cloth fastened to solid framing with an outward buried apron extending 12 to 24 inches. Decorative lattice alone is usually too weak.
