This strip-based version finishes at approximately 18 × 12 inches: nine 2.5 × 14-inch strips are sewn directly through thin batting and backing, then the unit is trimmed and bound.
A quilt-as-you-go (QAYG) place mat is a small, practical way to learn the technique: you add and quilt each fabric strip directly through the batting and backing instead of making a complete quilt top and quilting it afterward. The strip-based version below finishes at approximately 18 × 12 inches and uses nine 2.5 × 14-inch fabric strips.

The finished place mat is suitable for a dining table or decorative use. It should not automatically be used as a trivet, hot pad, or heat-protection item. Ordinary quilt batting is appropriate for a normal place mat, but no ordinary QAYG place mat should be marketed or relied upon as heat-resistant unless its materials and construction have been specifically rated and tested for that purpose.
Materials
- Backing: one 18 × 21-inch fat quarter, according to the source pattern.
- Top: nine assorted 2.5 × 14-inch fabric strips.
- Binding: enough fabric for two 2.5 × 42-inch binding strips.
- Batting: one 14 × 20-inch piece of thin, low-loft quilt batting.
- Water-soluble fabric marker for the placement line.
- Optional quilt-basting spray to temporarily stabilize the backing and batting.
- Thread and a filled bobbin.
The quantities above belong to this specific 18 × 12-inch version. They should not be treated as universal measurements for every QAYG place mat pattern. If you change the finished size, adjust the backing and batting so they provide an adequate margin around the top.
Tools
- Sewing machine
- Iron and ironing surface
- Rotary cutter, quilting ruler, and self-healing cutting mat
- Fabric scissors
- Seam ripper
- Optional walking foot or even-feed foot
- Optional binding clips
A walking foot can help reduce puckers because it moves multiple fabric layers more evenly, but it is not mandatory. Confirm that any walking foot is compatible with your sewing-machine model. You can complete the project with a standard presser foot if that is what your machine supports; use an appropriate stitch length and handle the layered unit without stretching it.
How to make the quilt-as-you-go place mat
1. Cut and prepare the layers
Cut the backing to 14 × 20 inches and cut the thin batting to the same size. Place the backing wrong side up, then place the batting on top. Smooth the layers so they lie flat, with no folds or bubbles. If desired, apply a light amount of quilt-basting spray according to its label and allow it to stabilize the layers temporarily.
Cut nine top strips, each 2.5 × 14 inches. Press the strips before sewing if they have visible creases. Straight, consistent strip edges make the later trimming step easier.
2. Mark the first-strip placement line
On the layered backing and batting, mark a line 2.5 inches from one short edge. This line identifies the area in which the first strip will sit. Use a water-soluble fabric marker and make the mark lightly.

3. Position the first strip
Place the first 2.5 × 14-inch strip right side up between the short edge and the marked line. Align its long edges as accurately as possible. This strip becomes the starting point for the rest of the top.

4. Add the second strip
Place the second strip right side down on top of the first strip, matching the adjacent long edges. Stitch through the strip, batting, and backing along that shared edge. Use the seam allowance specified by the pattern or your chosen construction plan; the important point is to sew securely through all three layers without pulling them out of alignment.
Open the new strip so it lies right side up beside the first strip. Finger-press the seam, then press it with an iron if needed. At this stage, the seam has been pieced and quilted in one operation.
5. Continue adding strips
Repeat the same sequence with the remaining strips:
- Place the next strip right side down over the unsewn adjacent edge.
- Sew through the fabric, batting, and backing along that edge.
- Open the strip so it is right side up.
- Finger-press or press the new seam flat.
- Check that the strip remains straight before adding the next one.
Continue until all nine strips have been sewn. Press the entire unit flat when the strip arrangement is complete.

Each strip is both part of the pieced top and part of the quilting process. If a seam is not opened fully, a strip edge can become narrower than intended, creating gaps or uneven coverage. If the layers shift while sewing, the backing may wrinkle or the finished unit may no longer trim square.

Press without dragging the iron across the unit. Lifting and placing the iron helps avoid distorting the strips. If you see a fold or an incorrectly placed strip, unpick the seam with a seam ripper before continuing; correcting a small error is easier than trying to hide it during trimming.
6. Square and trim the quilted top
Once all nine strips are attached and the unit is pressed, center the strip arrangement and trim the top to an 18 × 12-inch rectangle. Use a quilting ruler and rotary cutter where possible. Measure from several points rather than assuming the outer edges are square.
Trimming is not merely cosmetic. A square top gives the binding a consistent edge to follow and helps the place mat lie more neatly. Take care not to cut away so much that the backing or batting no longer extends appropriately beneath the top.

Machine-baste around the outer edge of the trimmed unit. This stabilizes the layers before binding and helps keep the batting and backing from shifting.
Finish the edge with binding made from two 2.5 × 42-inch strips. Join and press the binding according to your preferred binding method, then sew it around the place mat and finish it on the reverse side. Binding clips can hold the folded binding in place while you sew, but pins or careful hand positioning can also work.
Because fabric, batting, thread, and binding methods vary, laundering results will vary too. Before washing, check the care instructions for every fabric and batting layer. If the project will be washed, test your intended method on a small sample or use the care guidance supplied with the batting and fabrics. Do not promise that a particular amount of shrinkage, puckering, or shape retention will occur.

Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Puckers behind the seams | The layers are feeding at different rates, or the backing was not smoothed. | Recheck the backing and batting before sewing. A compatible walking foot may help. Avoid pulling the unit through the machine. |
| Strips do not remain parallel | The strips were cut unevenly, the seam allowance changed, or the fabric shifted. | Align the long edges carefully, keep the seam allowance consistent, and press after every strip. |
| Backing or batting is too small after trimming | The starting layers did not provide enough allowance, or the top was trimmed too aggressively. | Stop before trimming and confirm the intended finished size. For a different-size adaptation, cut the starting layers larger than the top. |
| Edges are wavy | The quilted unit was stretched during sewing or pressing. | Let the unit relax flat, press by lifting the iron rather than pushing it, and trim only what is necessary to create a straight rectangle. |
| The machine struggles with the layers | Needle, thread, presser-foot pressure, or fabric thickness may not suit the machine. | Use a fresh appropriate needle, sew slowly, and consult the machine manual before changing presser-foot pressure or using a specialty foot. |
Ways to customize the pattern
The nine-strip arrangement is only the design used in this documented version. You can adapt the appearance by changing the strip colors, alternating light and dark fabrics, using coordinated scraps, or arranging strips in a planned gradient. You can also alter the number, width, or orientation of the strips, but those are adaptations—not measurements from the original pattern.
For a different finished size, first decide the desired top dimensions. Then plan enough fabric, batting, and backing to cover the top with a working margin. A separate published QAYG PDF describes a finished 13 × 18-inch place mat and specifically advises that the backing and batting extend beyond the top, illustrating why dimensions should be taken from the individual pattern rather than combined casually.
Place mat sizes vary. Approximately 12 × 18 inches and 14 × 20 inches are also commonly encountered dimensions, but table space, dinnerware, seam allowances, and the pattern’s trimming instructions should determine your final choice.
Choosing another quilt-as-you-go place mat pattern
If you want a different shape, size, or starting format, compare the construction method before buying. These options are not interchangeable:
- Free strip tutorial: The AllPeopleQuilt project uses nine strips sewn directly onto a prepared batting-and-backing sandwich and finishes at approximately 18 × 12 inches.
- GE Designs Friday Fiesta Place Mats Pattern 179: A paid QAYG pattern using charm squares, written for four 13 × 18-inch place mats.
- June Tailor Venice: Described by a sewing retailer as a QAYG pattern for six 17 × 14-inch place mats.
- Learning-focused books: GE Designs’ Learn to Quilt As You Go includes place mat projects along with explanations of layering, quilting, joining, and finishing. Jera Brandvig’s Quilt As-You-Go Made Modern presents a different, block-oriented approach in which fabric is pieced onto small batting blocks and the blocks are joined later.
Check the current dimensions, included instructions or materials, edition, delivery format, and licensing terms at the time of purchase. A paid pattern may be more useful than a free tutorial if you want several coordinated place mats, a tested cutting plan, or a method other than strip piecing.
Supply-shopping priorities
The pattern is the central purchase; tools and consumables are supporting items. If you already sew, you may have most of what is needed. A rotary cutter, self-healing mat, and quilting ruler make the repeated 2.5-inch cuts and final squaring more convenient, while scissors can substitute for some cutting steps. A water-soluble marker and optional basting spray address the specific preparation steps in this version. A walking foot is a useful upgrade only if it fits your machine and you want help managing the layered sandwich.

For the batting, choose thin or low-loft quilt batting suitable for a sewn place mat. Do not select material solely because it is described as heat resistant, and do not assume that a regular place mat becomes a safe trivet through extra layers.
QAYG versus conventional quilting
In conventional quilt construction, the maker generally pieces a complete top, prepares a three-layer quilt sandwich, quilts the whole piece, and then binds it. QAYG divides that work into smaller sections: the top fabric is added while it is already positioned over batting and backing, so the seams are quilted as the strips are joined.
That difference can make a small place mat a manageable introduction to quilting techniques such as accurate cutting, pressing, machine basting, layer control, trimming, and binding. It does not mean every QAYG pattern follows this exact order. Always follow the instructions for the particular pattern you are using.

What does quilt-as-you-go mean?
Quilt-as-you-go means adding and quilting sections at the same time. In this strip method, each fabric strip is sewn through the existing top, batting, and backing as it is added. Other QAYG patterns may use pre-quilted blocks, cover strips, or different joining techniques.
What size is a quilt-as-you-go place mat?
The documented strip version finishes at approximately 18 × 12 inches. Other patterns use different dimensions, including examples around 13 × 18 inches, 14 × 20 inches, and 17 × 14 inches, so check the specific pattern before cutting.
Do I need a walking foot for a QAYG place mat?
No. A walking foot can help feed fabric, batting, and backing more evenly and may reduce puckers, but it is not an absolute requirement. Confirm compatibility before buying one for your sewing machine.
Can I use a quilt-as-you-go place mat as a trivet?
Regular thin quilt batting is sufficient for an ordinary decorative or dining place mat. Do not assume that the finished item is safe as a trivet or hot pad unless the materials and construction have been specifically rated and tested for heat protection.
Can I change the strip layout or finished size?
Yes, but changing the number, width, or orientation of the strips is an adaptation. Recalculate the fabric, batting, and backing so the layers cover the intended top and follow the chosen pattern’s trimming and finishing instructions.
The Bottom Line
For a straightforward first QAYG project, use the documented 14 × 20-inch backing-and-batting sandwich, add nine 2.5 × 14-inch strips, press after every seam, trim to approximately 18 × 12 inches, machine-baste the edge, and bind it. Keep the finished place mat for table use—not untested hot-pad or trivet duty—and treat other QAYG patterns as separate methods with their own measurements.
