The best quiet under-cabinet range hood is usually not the one with the biggest CFM number on the box. For most American kitchens, the practical sweet spot is a ducted 30-inch or 36-inch hood in the 250 to 400 CFM range, with a low-speed sound rating around 1 to 3 sones, a clean duct path to the exterior, and enough capture area to cover the burners you actually use.
On our kitchen jobs, we treat the hood as both an appliance and a cabinet detail. A good hood has to fit the cabinet opening, clear the face frame, attach to solid backing, line up with the duct, avoid conflicts with under-cabinet lighting, and still be easy to clean after six months of real cooking. When any one of those pieces is missed, a supposedly quiet hood can become loud, weak, or annoying to live with.
This guide focuses on how to buy a quiet under-cabinet range hood that performs well after it is installed. Product lists change every year, but the job-site rules do not: size the hood correctly, keep ductwork smooth and short, verify sound ratings at usable speeds, and know when a 400-plus CFM hood creates makeup-air and permitting issues.
What Makes an Under-Cabinet Range Hood Quiet?
Range hood noise is usually listed in sones or decibels. Sones are more useful for homeowners because they describe perceived loudness. A hood around 1 sone is very quiet. Around 2 sones is still comfortable for normal conversation. Around 3 sones is noticeable but acceptable for many kitchens. Above that, the sound can start to feel intrusive, especially in an open floor plan.

For a quiet kitchen, look for HVI-certified sound data where available. HVI, the Home Ventilating Institute, maintains a certified product directory that helps compare airflow and sound claims on a more consistent basis. We prefer published sound ratings at normal operating speeds, not just marketing language like “ultra quiet” or “silent.” No range hood is silent once it is moving useful air through a duct.
The key is the noise level at the speed you will actually use. A hood might be quiet on low speed but loud on high. If low speed only moves 100 CFM and you regularly sear steaks or fry food, that low-speed rating does not tell you much. For everyday cooking, many homeowners are happiest with a hood that can run in the 150 to 300 CFM range without dominating the room.
Common noise sources we see in the field
The blower is only one part of the sound. We often find that the duct system is what turns a decent hood into a loud one. Common problems include undersized duct, crushed flex duct, too many elbows, a restrictive wall cap, a poor transition from rectangular to round duct, or a damper that rattles in the wind. A 400 CFM hood forced through a choked duct can sound worse than a lower-CFM hood installed correctly.
Cabinet fit also matters. If the hood is loosely mounted to a thin cabinet bottom, vibration can transfer into the cabinet box. We like to see solid fastening, proper shims where needed, and backing that can actually carry the weight of the unit. That is especially important for stainless hoods with heavier baffle filters.

Ducted vs Ductless: The Most Important Choice
If you have a reasonable path to the exterior, choose a ducted hood. A ducted range hood removes moisture, grease, odor, smoke, fine particles, heat, and gas-combustion byproducts from the house. That is the main reason to install a hood in the first place.
A ductless under-cabinet hood recirculates air through grease and charcoal filters. It can reduce some grease and odor, but it does not exhaust moisture, heat, fine particles, or combustion pollutants outdoors. Ductless is a compromise for apartments, condos, masonry walls, interior kitchens, or remodels where exterior venting is not feasible without major disruption.
From a construction standpoint, ducted hoods are more demanding upfront but better long term. They need rigid metal duct, a proper exterior termination, a damper, and a route that complies with the hood manufacturer’s instructions and local code. Ductless hoods are easier to install, but they require filter changes and do not solve indoor air quality the same way.
Can a range hood vent into the attic or soffit?
No. Kitchen exhaust should terminate outdoors, not into an attic, crawlspace, garage, soffit cavity, wall cavity, or ceiling space. Dumping warm, greasy, humid air into building cavities can create moisture problems, odors, and contaminated surfaces. On remodels, we verify the termination point before assuming an existing hood is actually vented correctly.

How Much CFM Do You Need?
CFM stands for cubic feet per minute. It measures airflow, but it does not measure capture quality. A large blower with a poor hood shape or bad ductwork may miss front-burner plume and make a lot of noise. A slightly larger hood with better capture, installed at the right height, can often run at a lower and quieter speed.
For many residential under-cabinet installations, 250 to 400 CFM is the practical range. It is enough for normal boiling, sauteing, light frying, and everyday family cooking when the hood is properly sized and ducted. A frequent high-heat cook, wok user, heavy fryer, or owner of a pro-style gas range may need more airflow and a larger capture area, but that decision should be made with the duct path and makeup-air requirements in view.

One of the biggest mistakes is buying the highest-CFM hood first and asking how to install it later. In many jurisdictions, hoods over 400 CFM trigger makeup-air requirements. Under the 2024 International Residential Code, domestic cooking exhaust equipment over 400 CFM requires makeup air at a rate approximately equal to the exhaust rate, with controls that operate automatically with the exhaust system. Local amendments vary, but the 400 CFM threshold is real enough that we discuss it before ordering the appliance.
Why 400 CFM matters
A 600 CFM hood can depressurize a tight house if makeup air is not planned. That can interfere with atmospherically vented combustion appliances and can pull outside air through random leaks. A proper makeup-air system may include a duct, motorized damper, controls, HVAC coordination, and in some climates tempered air. That can add substantial cost and complexity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThis does not mean high-CFM hoods are bad. It means they belong in a planned mechanical design. For many cabinet-mounted residential hoods, staying at or below 400 CFM is the cleanest path when the cooking style allows it.
Size, Cabinet Fit, and Mounting Height
The most common under-cabinet hood widths are 30 inches and 36 inches. A 30-inch range usually gets a 30-inch hood when the cabinets are already built tight around the appliance. If you are designing new cabinets or modifying uppers, a hood that is wider than the cooktop can improve capture, especially in an open kitchen or for high-output burners.
Depth matters too. Many under-cabinet hoods are about 19 to 22 inches deep. Shallow hoods can struggle with front-burner capture because the rising plume starts in front of the intake. When practical, cook on rear burners for smoky or greasy work. That simple habit improves capture because fumes rise closer to the hood.
Mounting height should follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Many under-cabinet hoods land roughly 24 to 30 inches above an electric cooktop and roughly 27 to 36 inches above a gas cooking surface, but the actual range depends on the hood and appliance. Mounting too high reduces capture. Mounting too low can create heat clearance problems and make the cooking area uncomfortable.
Cabinet details to check before ordering
Before we order a hood, we measure the cabinet width, inside depth, face-frame projection, bottom panel thickness, side clearances, backsplash height, outlet location, and duct alignment. We also check whether the cabinet bottom needs a cutout for top venting or whether the hood will vent straight back through the wall.
On cabinet-woodwork projects, the hood should be coordinated with the cabinet shop early. Plan for fastener backing, trim returns, side panels, crown molding, under-cabinet light placement, and filter removal clearance. A hood that technically fits can still be miserable if the filters hit the face frame or the controls are tucked behind a trim lip.
Comparison Table: Quiet Under-Cabinet Hood Types
| Type | Typical Appliance Cost | Best Use | Noise Expectation | Watchouts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic ductless under-cabinet hood | $80-$200 | Apartments, condos, light cooking, no exterior duct option | Can be modest on low speed, often limited airflow | Does not exhaust moisture, heat, fine particles, or gas pollutants outdoors; charcoal filters are recurring consumables |
| Entry ducted or convertible hood, 200-350 CFM | $150-$350 | Simple replacement, modest cooking, existing duct | Acceptable if duct is short and properly sized | May use lighter mesh filters and smaller blowers; compare actual sone data |
| Quiet branded 300-500 CFM hood | $250-$700 | Most family kitchens, open kitchens with normal cooking | Often the best value when low-speed ratings are under 2 sones | Confirm duct size and makeup-air implications near or above 400 CFM |
| Premium stainless, baffle-filter, high-CFM, or inclined hood | $700-$1,500+ | Heavy cooking, larger ranges, design-forward kitchens | Can be quiet at lower speeds if ducted correctly | Heavier, may need stronger cabinet support, larger duct, and makeup-air planning |
Do not read this table as a ranking by price alone. We have installed modestly priced hoods that worked well because the duct was straight and short, and expensive hoods that disappointed because the installation forced the blower through a restrictive route.
2026 Cost to Install an Under-Cabinet Range Hood
In 2026, a basic vent hood installation commonly lands around $564 to $1,030 nationally based on published cost data. Under-cabinet installation often falls around $700 to $1,000 when the job is straightforward. That usually means the cabinet is ready, the electrical connection is available, and the existing duct is usable.

The appliance itself may cost as little as $80 to $200 for a basic ductless model, $150 to $350 for an entry ducted or convertible hood, $250 to $700 for a quieter branded 300 to 500 CFM hood, and $700 to $1,500 or more for premium stainless, high-CFM, baffle-filter, inclined, or smart-control models.
The largest cost swing is ductwork. Reusing an existing correct-size wall duct keeps labor controlled. Adding a new exterior wall penetration, roof cap, attic route, soffit route, cabinet cutout, electrical change, drywall repair, or masonry penetration can move the total into the $1,200 to $2,500-plus range. Complex duct additions are often estimated at $100 to $400 or more per linear foot depending on access, finish repair, roof work, and local labor rates.
| Project Scope | Typical 2026 Cost Range | Typical Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Replace existing under-cabinet hood, same size, same duct | $300-$900 plus appliance | 2-4 hours |
| Install ducted hood with minor cabinet cutting | $700-$1,500 plus appliance | Half day to 1 day |
| Add new wall or roof vent route | $1,200-$2,500+ total project range | 1-2 days plus finish repair |
| High-CFM hood with makeup-air coordination | $2,000-$5,000+ depending on HVAC work | Several days across trades |
Operating cost is usually minor compared with installation. Maintenance matters more. Mesh filters should be washed regularly. Baffle filters are durable and often dishwasher-friendly. Charcoal filters on ductless hoods need replacement every few months in busy kitchens, sometimes sooner with frequent frying.
Ductwork Rules That Keep a Quiet Hood Quiet
A range hood can only be as quiet as the air path allows. We prefer rigid galvanized steel, stainless steel, or copper duct. Common residential sizes include 6-inch round duct and 3-1/4 by 10-inch rectangular duct, but the manufacturer’s instructions control. If the hood calls for 6-inch round, reducing it to a smaller duct to fit an old wall cavity is asking for noise and poor performance.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchShort, smooth, and direct is the rule. Every elbow, transition, long horizontal run, crushed section, and restrictive cap adds static pressure. Static pressure makes the blower work harder, raises noise, and reduces real airflow at the cooktop. A hood advertised at 400 CFM in a lab may move much less through a bad duct route.
Avoid flexible dryer duct, plastic duct, and improvised transitions. Use sealed metal joints, a proper backdraft damper, and an exterior cap designed for kitchen exhaust. If routing through an exterior wall is possible, it is often quieter and simpler than going up through an attic and roof. Roof penetrations can work well, but they need careful flashing and weatherproofing.
Filters, Lighting, Controls, and Daily Use
Filters are not just a cleaning detail. A clogged filter restricts airflow and increases noise. Aluminum mesh filters are common on budget and midrange hoods. They work for lighter cooking but need frequent washing. Stainless baffle filters are common on higher-performance hoods. They are sturdier, easier to handle when greasy, and better suited to heavier cooking.
Lighting should be bright enough to make the cooktop useful without becoming glare. LED lighting is now common, but the quality varies. We look for replaceable bulbs or serviceable LED modules when possible, because a failed proprietary light board can make a simple appliance annoying to maintain.
Controls should be easy to reach and clean. Mechanical rocker switches are simple and reliable. Touch controls look cleaner but can be fussy with wet or greasy fingers. Remote controls and app features are not worth much if the basic fan speed and light controls are awkward.
For quieter use, start the hood before heat and smoke build. Use rear burners when practical for high-smoke cooking. Leave the hood running for 5 to 15 minutes after cooking to clear residual moisture and pollutants. These habits let the hood work at lower speeds instead of needing a noisy boost after the kitchen is already smoky.

Best Quiet Hood Buying Criteria
Start with the duct path. If there is no practical exterior route, shop ductless or convertible models with realistic expectations. If there is a duct route, verify the size, length, number of elbows, termination point, and whether it matches the hood’s requirements.
Next, confirm cabinet dimensions. Measure the actual opening, not just the range width. Check the underside of the cabinet, side panels, face frame, and any decorative trim. A 30-inch hood does not always slide into a nominal 30-inch cabinet space once finish details are in place.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Then choose CFM. For normal cooking, 250 to 400 CFM is often the practical residential range. Heavy cooking, large gas ranges, and open kitchens may justify more, but anything over 400 CFM should trigger a makeup-air conversation before purchase.
After that, compare sound ratings. Look for HVI-certified data where available. Prioritize low sones at the speeds you will actually use. A good target is under 2 sones for normal cooking speeds and around 3 sones or less at the code-relevant 100 CFM level where local energy codes apply.
Finally, check service details: washable filters, accessible fasteners, reliable lighting, simple controls, and a finish that matches the kitchen. Stainless steel is common, but white, black, and custom cabinet-integrated options can be the better visual choice depending on the room.
When to DIY vs When to Hire a Pro
A capable homeowner can often replace a same-size under-cabinet hood when the existing electrical connection and duct are already correct. The work typically involves turning off power, removing the old hood, confirming the damper and duct alignment, lifting the new hood into place, fastening it securely, connecting wiring in the junction box, and testing fan speeds and lights. For a straightforward replacement, plan on 2 to 4 hours with a helper.
Hire a pro when the project involves new ductwork, a roof or masonry penetration, electrical changes, cabinet modification, gas appliance clearance concerns, or a hood over 400 CFM. Also hire help if the existing hood vents into an attic, soffit, or wall cavity. Correcting that is building work, not just appliance work.
For cabinet-heavy kitchens, the best result usually comes from coordinating the carpenter, electrician, and HVAC or ventilation installer before the hood arrives. On our jobs, we want the hood model selected early enough that the cabinet bottom cutout, duct chase, blocking, outlet location, and trim details are already solved before finish day.
Safety, Permits, and Code Notes
Code requirements vary by city and state, but several principles are consistent. Kitchen exhaust should discharge outdoors through an approved duct and termination. Ducts should be metal and installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Electrical work must be done safely, with power disconnected during installation and junction boxes accessible as required.
The 400 CFM makeup-air threshold is the big one for homeowners to understand. If the selected hood exceeds 400 CFM, many jurisdictions require makeup air that operates automatically with the exhaust system. That is not just a paperwork issue. In a tight home, high exhaust rates can depressurize the building and affect combustion appliances, fireplaces, and indoor comfort.

Permits are commonly needed when adding electrical circuits, cutting a new exterior penetration, modifying duct systems, or adding makeup air. A simple like-for-like replacement may not require a permit in some areas, but local rules control. Before we cut a roof, wall, or cabinet package, we verify the hood specifications and the local inspection expectations.
Our Practical Recommendation
For most homeowners asking for the best quiet under-cabinet range hood, our recommendation is simple: choose a ducted 250 to 400 CFM model, sized to the cooktop and cabinet opening, with published low-sone ratings at normal speeds, washable filters, LED lighting, and a duct outlet that matches a short rigid-metal route to the exterior.
If the kitchen is open to the living area, do not chase silence at the expense of capture. A slightly larger, better-ducted hood running on a lower speed is often quieter than a small hood screaming on boost. If the cooking style is heavy, spend money first on capture area and duct quality, then on premium controls or styling.
If exterior venting is impossible, a ductless under-cabinet hood is still better than no hood for grease and some odors, but it should be described honestly. It is filtration, not true exhaust ventilation. Use it, maintain the filters, and open windows or use other ventilation when cooking produces smoke, moisture, or combustion pollutants.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good sone rating for a quiet under-cabinet range hood?
For normal cooking, look for roughly 1 to 3 sones at the speeds you will actually use. Under 2 sones is a strong quiet target. Always compare certified sound data where available, not just marketing claims.
Is 400 CFM enough for an under-cabinet range hood?
For many residential kitchens, yes. A properly sized and ducted 250 to 400 CFM hood is usually enough for everyday cooking. Heavy frying, wok cooking, open kitchens, and pro-style gas ranges may need more capture area and airflow.
Do I need makeup air for a 600 CFM range hood?
In many jurisdictions, yes. The 2024 IRC uses 400 CFM as the threshold where domestic kitchen exhaust needs makeup air. Local rules vary, but a 600 CFM hood should be reviewed before purchase.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is a ductless under-cabinet range hood worth it?
It can be worth it when exterior venting is not feasible, but it is a compromise. Ductless hoods filter grease and some odors but do not exhaust moisture, heat, fine particles, or gas-combustion pollutants outdoors.
How much does it cost to install an under-cabinet range hood in 2026?
A straightforward under-cabinet hood installation often runs about $700 to $1,000, with basic national vent hood installation data around $564 to $1,030. New ductwork, roof or wall penetrations, cabinet modification, and makeup air can push the project to $1,200 to $2,500 or more.
Why is my new quiet range hood still loud after installation?
The usual causes are restrictive ductwork, undersized duct, too many elbows, a bad transition, a restrictive exterior cap, loose mounting, or dirty filters. The hood may be quiet in a lab but loud in the house if the air path is poor.
