A dull chain will often produce fine sawdust, cut crookedly, bounce or chatter, fail to pull itself into the wood, or generate smoke. Secure the saw, identify the correct file size and angle, sharpen every cutter consistently, then check the depth gauges before cutting again.
How to tell when a chainsaw chain is dull
Stop cutting and inspect the chain when its behavior changes. STIHL identifies these warning signs:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The chain no longer pulls itself into the wood.
- It produces fine sawdust instead of larger chips.
- The saw cuts crookedly or is difficult to position.
- The chain chatters or bounces.
- The cut produces smoke despite appropriate lubrication and tension.
These symptoms can also result from damage, incorrect tension or another saw fault. If sharpening does not restore normal cutting, stop using the chain and have it assessed.

Match the chain, not just the saw
File size and filing angle depend on the chain. Read the chain packaging, markings and saw manual, then confirm the chain’s pitch, the required round-file diameter and the manufacturer’s sharpening instructions. Do not assume that one file or one angle fits every chain.

Look for useful guidance
A suitable guide helps hold the file at the intended height and angle while you work. For field use, also check whether the tool includes depth-gauge support, since those gauges need attention after the cutters are sharpened.
Understand what the tool can and cannot do
The STIHL 2-in-1 Filing Guide, also called EasyFile in STIHL materials, is an example of this format. STIHL describes it as a hand tool with two round files, one flat file, a file holder and built-in guidance for sharpening cutters and working on depth gauges. Because it is manual, it does not require electricity or a battery. Verify the exact guide and file size for your chain before purchase; the title’s “Amazon find” does not identify a confirmed listing or model.

How to sharpen a chainsaw chain with a guided hand file
1. Make the saw safe and stable
- Switch off the saw and allow it to cool.
- Put on suitable gloves and eye protection.
- Set the chain snugly against the bar rail and secure the bar so it cannot move. Do not clamp the chain itself.
Stable positioning prevents the bar from shifting while you maintain pressure and alignment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Establish a reference cutter
Find the most worn cutter and mark it. Use that cutter as your reference so every other tooth is filed to a consistent length. Before making the first stroke, confirm the chain type, filing angle and round-file diameter from the chain maker’s documentation.

3. File in the indicated direction
- Fit the correct guide and file for the chain.
- Place the guide level and follow its indicated stroke direction.
- File forward through the cutter, then lift the guide before returning it to the starting position.
- Use the same motion and pressure on every cutter.
STIHL’s filing guidance says, “Three strokes per cutting tooth should be sufficient. Severely worn teeth could require additional strokes.” That is a manufacturer instruction for ordinary sharpening, not a guaranteed time or performance result. A badly worn tooth may need more strokes, but remove only enough material to restore a consistent cutting edge.
4. Keep both sides consistent
Sharpen all cutters in one direction, then reposition yourself or the saw and sharpen the cutters facing the opposite direction. Compare the finished teeth frequently. Unequal cutter lengths can make the saw pull to one side or cut crookedly.

5. Check the depth gauges
Each depth gauge controls how deeply its cutter enters the wood. After sharpening, use the chain maker’s specified gauge and a flat file to adjust them. Filing a depth gauge too low can increase kickback risk, so do not lower them aggressively or substitute a generic setting for the specified one. Husqvarna says normal depth-gauge filing is often needed about every third or fifth cutter filing; treat that as Husqvarna guidance rather than a universal interval.
6. Inspect before returning to work
Replace the chain if it is damaged, has reached its service or wear marking, or cannot be restored with correct filing. STIHL advises replacing a chain at its wear marking. If the chain still cuts poorly after careful sharpening and correct tension, consult the chain maker or a qualified service professional.

How often should you sharpen?
Sharpening frequency depends on use and contamination rather than a fixed calendar. Touch up the chain when the warning signs appear, after striking soil or another abrasive object, or when the cutters visibly lose their working edge. Regular light filing removes less material than waiting until the cutters are severely worn. Always inspect for damage before filing.
Portable guided file versus other sharpening approaches
| Consideration | Portable guided hand file | Powered sharpener |
|---|---|---|
| Power requirement | Manual; no power source | Requires the equipment’s specified power source |
| Portability | Suited to field touch-ups and storage in a saw kit | Generally better suited to a stable bench setup |
| Angle control | Depends on the built-in or fitted guide and consistent technique | Depends on the machine’s settings and setup |
| Depth-gauge work | May be integrated, as on STIHL’s 2-in-1 guide, or require a separate gauge and flat file | Requires the appropriate wheel, setting or separate hand tool |
Oregon’s support material covers both hand filing and electric sharpening, but the available manufacturer guidance does not establish that an electric sharpener is faster, more accurate or more portable than a guided hand file. Choose based on where you sharpen, how often you work away from a bench and whether the tool supports your chain’s specifications.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes and fixes
- Using the wrong file diameter: Recheck the chain identification and maker’s chart before filing.
- Changing the angle between cutters: Keep the guide level and use its directional markings on every forward stroke.
- Filing backward: Lift the guide on the return instead of dragging the file through the cutter.
- Ignoring depth gauges: Inspect them after cutter sharpening and use the specified gauge and flat file.
- Clamping the chain: Secure the bar without pinching the chain itself.
- Continuing with a worn or damaged chain: Replace it at the maker’s wear limit or seek qualified service.
