Quartz countertops are easy to clean when you keep the routine simple. For daily care, wipe the surface with warm water, mild dish soap, and a microfiber cloth or soft sponge. Then wipe again with a clean damp cloth to remove soap residue, and dry the surface with a microfiber towel. That last dry step matters. On our job sites, most “cloudy quartz” complaints come from soap film, hard-water minerals, or wipe marks, not from a permanent stain.
Quartz is engineered stone made with natural quartz aggregate, pigments, and resin binders. It is nonporous, so it does not need sealing, polishing, or reconditioning the way many natural stones do. But nonporous does not mean damage-proof. Quartz is stain-resistant, not stain-proof. It is heat-resistant, not heat-proof. Harsh chemicals, abrasive pads, and hot appliances can damage the resin-rich surface layer or expose weak points near seams, sink rails, edges, and cooktop cutouts.
This guide gives you a practical contractor’s approach: what to use every day, what to avoid, how to handle stains and disinfecting, how matte and dark finishes behave, what repairs cost in 2026, and when a countertop issue should be handled by a professional.
The Best Daily Cleaning Routine for Quartz
The best daily cleaner for quartz countertops is not a specialty product. It is warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth. A pH-neutral quartz or stone cleaner can be useful if it dries residue-free, but strength is not the goal. The goal is to lift food soil, oils, fingerprints, and spills without leaving cleaner behind.

- Clear crumbs and grit with a dry microfiber cloth. Grit can scratch or haze the surface if you drag it under a sponge.
- Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water. You do not need a sink full of suds.
- Wipe with a soft sponge or microfiber cloth using light pressure.
- Rinse with a separate clean damp cloth. This removes soap film.
- Dry with a clean microfiber towel, especially around faucets, seams, and edges.
For a typical 25 to 35 square feet of kitchen countertop, this routine should take about 3 to 5 minutes. If you cook daily, wipe down the prep zones after dinner. If the counter sees raw meat, poultry, seafood, or eggs, clean first, then disinfect with a product allowed by your countertop manufacturer.

Basic quartz cleaning supplies are inexpensive. Microfiber cloths, a soft sponge, mild dish soap, a pH-neutral quartz cleaner, a plastic scraper, and a non-abrasive pad usually cost about $15 to $50 total depending on what you already own. A specialty quartz or stone cleaner commonly runs about $8 to $20 per bottle. We look for residue-free performance, not a harsher formula.
Quartz Is Not Quartzite, and That Changes the Cleaning Rules
Homeowners often use “quartz” and “quartzite” interchangeably, but they are different materials. Quartz countertops are engineered slabs. Quartzite is natural stone. Quartz is usually nonporous and does not need sealer. Quartzite often needs stone sealer and more natural-stone care.
If you recently bought a house and do not know which material you have, check the closing documents, builder selections, countertop invoice, or inside a sink cabinet for a fabricator sticker. If the surface was installed as Cambria, Caesarstone, Silestone, MSI, or another engineered product, it is quartz. If it was sold as natural stone, confirm before using any specialty cleaners.
This distinction matters because quartz has resin binders that can be damaged by high heat, strong solvents, oven cleaner, paint stripper, drain cleaner, and aggressive abrasives. Natural quartzite has different vulnerabilities, especially around sealing and acidic etching. Do not borrow a cleaner routine from one material and apply it to the other.
Safe, Unsafe, and Check-First Cleaners
The fastest way to avoid damage is to keep a saved or printed copy of your installed brand’s care sheet. Cambria, Caesarstone, Silestone, MSI, and private-label quartz do not all word their chemical guidance the same way. When a cleaner is not clearly approved, test a small, low-visibility area first, especially on matte, honed, concrete-look, or dark quartz.
| Cleaner or Tool | Use on Quartz? | Contractor Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Warm water and mild dish soap | Safe for daily use | Rinse and dry so soap film does not build up. |
| Microfiber cloth or soft sponge | Safe | Use separate cloths for washing, rinsing, and drying. |
| pH-neutral quartz or stone cleaner | Safe when brand-compatible | Good for residue-free cleaning; commonly $8-$20 per bottle. |
| Plastic scraper | Safe with care | Hold low to the surface and soften dried food first. |
| Gentle household degreaser | Check first | Some brands allow products such as Simple Green, 409, Fantastik, Mr. Clean, or dish detergent for grease. Test first on matte or dark finishes. |
| Rubbing alcohol or alcohol-water mix | Check first | Often used for disinfecting, but follow your countertop brand’s instructions and contact time. |
| Bleach or disinfecting wipes | Check first | Avoid blanket bleach use. Prolonged exposure can affect finish, color, or warranty coverage. |
| Vinegar | Usually avoid unless approved | Acidic cleaners can conflict with some brand guidance and may affect certain finishes over time. |
| Windex or glass cleaner | Check first | Can leave haze or interact with finish; not our first choice. |
| Magic Eraser-style pads | Use only if approved | Melamine is abrasive. Overuse can dull polished areas. |
| Steel wool, red or green scouring pads | Do not use | Can scratch, dull, or leave metal marks. |
| Oven cleaner, drain cleaner, paint stripper, strong solvents | Do not use | These can permanently damage the resin and surface finish. |
How to Remove Common Messes and Stains
With quartz, start with the least aggressive method and move up only if needed. A stain that looks serious at first is often residue sitting on top of the nonporous surface.
Dried food, syrup, and sticky spills
Soften the mess before scraping. Lay a warm, soapy cloth over the spot for 5 to 10 minutes. Then use a plastic scraper held nearly flat to the counter. Do not dig the corner into the surface. Wipe with mild soap and water, rinse clean, and dry.

Grease around ranges and islands
Grease needs a cleaner that can cut oil without attacking the surface. Start with dish detergent and warm water. For stubborn grease, use a pH-neutral degreasing cleaner that your quartz brand allows. Spray lightly, let it work for the time listed on the label, wipe with a soft cloth, rinse thoroughly, and dry.
We do not recommend leaving degreaser sitting on quartz while you clean the rest of the kitchen. Contact time matters. More time is not automatically better.
Coffee, wine, turmeric, curry, and oil
Quartz resists stains, but pigments and oils can sit on the surface or settle into microscopic texture, especially on light, matte, or honed finishes. Wipe these spills as soon as you see them. For a fresh spill, use soap and warm water first. For a stubborn yellow or orange mark from turmeric or curry, use a brand-approved quartz cleaner and a non-abrasive pad with light pressure. Rinse and dry before deciding whether the stain remains.
Ink, cosmetics, and adhesive residue
Ink, makeup, construction adhesive, and tape residue are common after move-in or remodeling. Do not reach for paint thinner or acetone unless your specific brand allows it. Start with warm soapy water and a plastic scraper. If residue remains, check the care sheet for approved solvents or call the fabricator. Adhesive cleanup is one of those moments where a 10-minute phone call can prevent a permanent dull patch.

Hard-water marks are mineral deposits, not typical stains. Around faucets, soap dispensers, and undermount sink rails, dry the surface after use to prevent rings. If a limescale remover is needed, check your brand’s instructions first. Some manufacturers allow a specific limescale process; others are more restrictive. After any mineral treatment, rinse well and dry completely.
How to Disinfect Quartz Countertops Safely
Disinfecting is not the same as cleaning. Cleaning removes crumbs, grease, proteins, and visible soil. Disinfecting reduces germs on an already clean surface. If you spray disinfectant over chicken juice, oil, and bread crumbs, it will not perform the way the label says it should.

Use this sequence after raw meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, or high-touch use:
- Remove loose debris with a paper towel or cloth.
- Wash with warm water and mild dish soap.
- Rinse with a clean damp cloth.
- Apply a quartz-compatible disinfectant.
- Leave it wet for the label’s required contact time, often several minutes depending on the product.
- Rinse if the label or countertop brand requires it, then dry.
Some quartz products are certified under NSF/ANSI 51 for food-contact surfaces, but that does not make the countertop self-sanitizing. Use cutting boards for raw meat and produce. Cutting directly on quartz can dull knives and may leave marks, especially in resin-rich areas or textured finishes.
Why Quartz Looks Cloudy, Streaky, or Dirty After Cleaning
When quartz looks cloudy after cleaning, the cause is usually residue. The most common sources are too much dish soap, a cleaner that does not fully evaporate, hard water, dirty cloths, or wiping without drying. Dark quartz and matte quartz show these problems faster than polished white quartz.
Fix for cloudy film
Wash the area with warm water and a small amount of mild soap. Then rinse two times with clean damp microfiber cloths. Dry immediately with a fresh microfiber towel. If the haze disappears while wet and returns when dry, you may be dealing with mineral residue or cleaner film. If the haze never changes, it may be dulling from abrasion or chemical exposure.
Fix for black matte fingerprints
Matte black and charcoal quartz often shows fingerprints, palm oils, wipe direction, and water minerals. Scrubbing harder usually makes it worse. Clean lightly, rinse thoroughly, and dry in straight overlapping passes. On our punch lists, we also check under-cabinet lighting because harsh light can exaggerate wipe marks on dark counters.
Fix for metal marks
Metal marks from pans, cans, or tools may sit on top of the surface. Do not use steel wool. Try mild soap first, then a brand-approved quartz cleaner and a non-abrasive pad. If the mark remains, ask the fabricator before escalating to abrasive methods.

Heat Protection: The Cleaning Issue That Becomes a Repair Bill
Many quartz problems start with heat, not cleaning. Quartz can tolerate normal kitchen use, but the resin binders can discolor, scorch, or crack under concentrated heat. A hot pan from a 400-degree oven should not go directly on quartz. Neither should heat-generating countertop appliances.

Good cleaning habits are inexpensive. Repairs are not. A $12 bottle of cleaner and a $10 pack of microfiber towels are minor compared with repairing a chip, crack, burn mark, or chemically dulled area.
| Item or Repair | Typical 2026 US Cost | What Affects the Price |
|---|---|---|
| Basic cleaning supplies | $15-$50 total | Cloths, soft sponge, mild soap, pH-neutral cleaner, plastic scraper, non-abrasive pad |
| Specialty quartz cleaner | $8-$20 per bottle | Brand, residue-free performance, local availability |
| DIY chip repair kit | $15-$60 | Color match, gloss match, chip size, homeowner skill |
| Professional chip repair | About $150-$500 per chip | Color, edge profile, polish level, access, minimum service charge |
| Professional crack repair | About $300-$1,200 | Crack length, location near seam or sink, slab movement, reinforcement needed |
| Quartz repair by area | About $5-$15 per sq. ft. | Damage type, finish, service minimums, regional labor |
| New quartz installed | About $50-$200 per sq. ft. | Brand, slab grade, thickness, edge, cutouts, seams, removal, labor |
| Quartz countertop replacement project | Commonly $1,500-$8,000; many projects around $4,500 | Kitchen size, old top removal, plumbing/electrical reconnection, backsplash, access |
DIY chip kits can help with tiny chips in low-visibility areas, but polished quartz is hard to match. Color, pattern, transparency, and sheen all matter. A poor repair may remain visible and can make a later professional repair harder. If the chip is on a front edge, at a sink rail, or near a cooktop cutout, we recommend getting a fabricator’s opinion.
When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
Most quartz cleaning is a homeowner task. You do not need a contractor to clean soap film, grease, fingerprints, or fresh food spills. You do need judgment when the issue may involve damage rather than dirt.
DIY is reasonable when
- The surface has normal food residue, fingerprints, grease, or soap film.
- The stain changes or improves after mild cleaning.
- The issue is hard-water spotting around a faucet and your care sheet allows the cleaner you plan to use.
- The chip is tiny, away from an edge, and you accept that a DIY repair may be visible.
- You are only changing cleaning products, cloths, or daily habits.
Call a pro when
- A crack runs from a sink, seam, cooktop cutout, or inside corner.
- A hot pan or appliance left a burn, scorch, yellow mark, or dull ring.
- The surface has a dull patch that does not change after rinsing and drying.
- A front edge chip is large enough to catch a cloth or fingernail.
- The slab moves, flexes, or sounds hollow near the damaged area.
- You suspect the cabinets are not level or the countertop is unsupported.
Countertop cracks are sometimes symptoms, not isolated defects. We look for cabinet movement, missing support at overhangs, tight appliance openings, sink weight, seam placement, and thermal stress. Fixing only the visible crack without addressing the cause can lead to a repeat failure.
Replacement, Plumbing, and Electrical Notes Homeowners Miss
Cleaning does not trigger permits. Repairing a small chip usually does not either. But countertop replacement can involve plumbing, electrical, and code issues, especially in kitchens with islands, cooktops, disposals, dishwashers, or pop-up receptacles.
If a countertop replacement requires disconnecting and reconnecting a sink, faucet, garbage disposal, cooktop, or dishwasher air gap, plan for a plumber or qualified installer. If the island layout changes, outlets move, or receptacles are added, an electrician may be needed. Kitchen island electrical rules have changed in recent code cycles, and local jurisdictions do not all adopt the same edition on the same schedule. Before moving an island outlet, deleting one, or adding a waterfall panel that affects receptacle access, check with the local building department or licensed electrician.

For budgeting, old countertop removal, sink and cooktop cutouts, seam count, backsplash height, cabinet leveling, plumber and electrician reconnection, stairs, access, and rush scheduling can all move the final number. Installed quartz commonly falls around $50 to $200 per square foot, with many midrange projects landing around $60 to $150 per square foot. Full professional quartz installation often runs $1,500 to $8,000, with many homeowners around $4,500 depending on kitchen size and selections.
A Practical Quartz Care Plan That Works
If you want quartz to stay good-looking for years, keep the system simple and repeatable. Store a small cleaning kit under the sink: microfiber cloths, mild dish soap, a soft sponge, a pH-neutral quartz cleaner, a plastic scraper, and the manufacturer’s care sheet. Label one cloth for drying if that helps your household stick to the routine.
Wipe spills promptly, especially coffee, wine, turmeric, curry, cooking oil, ink, cosmetics, and acidic foods. Use cutting boards. Use trivets with airflow under hot pans and countertop appliances. Clean before disinfecting. Rinse away cleaner residue. Dry the surface instead of letting hard water evaporate on it.
That is the real secret with quartz: do less, but do it correctly. Most damage we see comes from overreaction. A homeowner sees haze and reaches for a stronger chemical. They see a sticky spot and grab an abrasive pad. They trust “heat-resistant” and set an air fryer on the slab every morning. Quartz is forgiving, but it still rewards boring, careful maintenance.

What is the best daily cleaner for quartz countertops?
Warm water, mild dish soap, and a microfiber cloth are the best daily choice. Wipe, rinse with a clean damp cloth, and dry with microfiber to prevent streaks, soap film, and water spots.
Can you use bleach, vinegar, Windex, Clorox wipes, or rubbing alcohol on quartz?
Check your specific quartz brand’s care sheet first. Some disinfecting or alcohol methods may be allowed, but blanket bleach use, vinegar, glass cleaner, and harsh chemicals can cause haze, finish damage, or warranty issues.
Do quartz countertops need to be sealed?
No. Engineered quartz is nonporous and does not need sealing, polishing, or reconditioning. Quartzite is different and often does need sealer, so confirm which material you have.
Why does my quartz look cloudy after cleaning?
Cloudiness is usually soap film, cleaner residue, hard-water minerals, or dirty cloths. Clean with mild soap, rinse twice with clean damp microfiber, and dry immediately. If the haze does not change, it may be surface damage.
Can I put hot pans or an air fryer directly on quartz?
No. Quartz is heat-resistant, not heat-proof. Use trivets or hot pads under hot pans, air fryers, slow cookers, electric skillets, toaster ovens, and other heat-generating appliances.
When should I call a professional for quartz damage?
Call a pro for cracks, burns, dull spots that do not rinse away, large edge chips, damage near seams or sink cutouts, or any area where the slab moves or sounds unsupported.
